AB  - This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of adsorption and photocatalysis techniques at removing the herbicide clomazone (CLO) and the antidepressant known as amitriptyline (AMI) from water. This study employed kinetic models to analyze the removal processes and assess the potential toxicity of the treated water. The structure and morphology of the prepared multi-walled carbon nanotubes were characterized as adsorbents by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared techniques, and Raman spectroscopy. The adsorption kinetics of CLO and AMI were studied on the pristine and functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes. Kinetic studies were performed by modeling the obtained experimental data using three kinetic models: pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and Elovich kinetic models. On the other hand, the efficiency of CLO and AMI photodegradation was examined as a function of the type of irradiation (UV and simulated solar irradiation) and type of TiO2 photocatalyst (Aeroxide and Kronos). Under the experimental conditions employed, the reaction followed pseudo-first-order kinetics. Additionally, in order to assess the toxicity of water containing CLO, AMI, and their intermediates, toxicity assessments were conducted using human fetal lung fibroblast cells. The results obtained indicate the effectiveness of both methods and provide valuable insights into their removal mechanisms, contributing to the advancement of sustainable water treatment strategies.

AB  - The purpose of this systematic overview is to establish the impact of inhalation and topical application of Rosa damascena essential oil in aromatherapy practice. A bibliometric analysis using the different scientific databases was conducted to examine scientific documents related to “rose aromatherapy” and “Rosa damascena aromatherapy”. Microsoft Excel and VOSviewer software were used to extract and visualize information. Founded on a review of 93 papers, the scent of rose essential oil has applications in aromatherapy for reducing anxiety, alleviating pain, improving sleep quality, as well as alleviating physiological symptoms during menopause and PMS. It aids in mitigating stress and reducing stress and reducing depression and fatigue, for relaxation and improving cognitive function, among other benefits. Ultimately, rose essential oil is safe and suitable for self-administration via inhalation or topical application, either alone or with other essential oils.

AB  - An active packaging based on the composite film was developed by incorporation of oregano oil as an antimicrobial agent into a cellulose acetate/polycaprolactone diol blend (CA/PCL-diol). A novel plasticizer based on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) glycolysis product (bis(hydroxyethyl terephthalate)) and tartaric acid was synthesized and its influence on the structural, surface, mechanical, barrier, and thermal properties were investigated. The obtained results have shown that plasticizer also has a compatibilizing effect, improving the miscibility of polymers in a blend. A sample with the optimal amount of plasticizer (30 wt%), as well as the best mechanical and barrier properties, was used for the preparation of series with different amounts of oregano oil (3, 6, and 9 wt%). The synthesized azo dye—5-(4-bromo-phenyl azo)-3-amido-6-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pyridone, soluble in acetone, as well as a blend and plasticizer, has been shown as an adequate one for this composition, due to its ability to achieve a good pigmentation in a low amount (0.3 wt% per polymer blend weight), to absorb UV light, and decrease the aging of the material. Contemporary lifestyle has imposed a need for ready-to-eat (RTE) meals which saves consumers time. RTE food packaging should meet certain requirements such as the ability to prolong shelf-life and preserve the freshness of the food product, and at the same time to make a minimal amount of waste after usage, considering the fact that it is mostly single-use plastic food packaging. Optimal mechanical properties, biodegradability, and additional functions make these films suitable for the packaging of ready-to-eat (RTE) food such as fresh salad.

AB  - Structure of epitaxial LaMnO3 thin films grown on different single crystal substrates by unconventional polymer assisted deposition (PAD) method was investigated. Epitaxial films were prepared from lanthanum manganite water based solutions deposited by spin coating on single crystal MgO (001), SrTiO3 (001) and SrTiO3 (110) substrates, and the influence of substrate type on the film structure was analysed. Better uniformity of the epitaxial LaMnO3 films on SrTiO3 substrates was obtained, but a non-stoichiometric La1-xMnO3 phase was formed after the heat treatment at 750 °C. In addition, the prepared thin films were multiple annealed at different temperatures up to 900 °C, in order to investigate importance of post-annealing treatment. Epitaxial nature of the prepared films was preserved after annealing at up to 900 °C and the structure rearrangement through formation of cell closer to bulk stochiometric LaMnO3 phase was observed.

AB  - In this work bilayer structures, composed of ferromagnetic manganite and ferroelectric titanate layers, were obtained by solution deposition technique. The first step in preparation of the bilayer thin films was deposition of manganite (LaMnO3 or La0.7Sr0.3MnO3) layer by water-based polymer assisted deposition (PAD). Polycrystalline structures were obtained when manganite films were deposited by spin coating on commercial Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si type substrate, whereas epitaxial films were grown on a single crystal SrTiO3 with (001) orientation substrate. The second ferroelectric titanate (BaTiO3 or Ba0.7Sr0.3TiO3) layer was deposited by spin coating using sol-gel method. AB  - In this study, levan from Bacillus licheniformis NS032 was modified in an aqueous medium by octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA), and the properties of the obtained derivatives were studied. The maximum efficiency in the synthesis reaction was achieved at 40 °C and a polysaccharide slurry concentration of 30 %. Increasing the reagent concentration (2–10 %) led to an increase in the degree of substitution (0.016–0.048). Structures of derivatives were confirmed by FTIR and NMR. Scanning electronic microscopy, thermogravimetry, and dynamic light scattering analyses showed that the derivatives with degrees of substitution of 0.025 and 0.036 retained levan's porous structure and thermostability and showed better colloidal stability than the native polysaccharide. The intrinsic viscosity of derivatives increased upon modification, while the surface tension of the 1 % solution was lowered to 61 mN/m. Oil-in-water emulsions prepared with sunflower oil (10 % and 20 %) by mechanical homogenization and 2 and 10 % derivatives in the continuous phase showed mean oil droplet sizes of 106–195 μm, while the distribution curves exhibited bimodal character. The studied derivatives have a good capacity to stabilize emulsions, as they have a creaming index ranging from 73 % to 94 %. The OSA-modified levans could have potential applications in new formulations of emulsion-based systems.

AB  - For the last several decades, energy harvesters based on piezoelectricity from mechanical vibration have emerged as very promising devices that are being explored extensively for their functionality in energy technologies. In this paper, a series of flexible lead-free BaZr0.2Ti0.8O3 (BZT)/PVDF and lead-based PbZr0.52Ti0.48O3 (PZT)/PVDF piezocomposites with variable filler content up to 50 vol% were prepared by a hot pressing method. The structure and morphology of the BZT and PZT powders, as well as the distribution of the piezo-active filler in the obtained flexible films were characterized by XRD and SEM analysis. In addition, the remnant polarization (Pr) and leakage current were also investigated to evaluate the breakdown strength in both types of flexible films. The calculations of storage energies and output voltage obtained for the investigated materials revealed an increasing trend with an increasing amount of BZT and PZT active phases. The maximum storage energy of 0.42 J/cm3 (and energy efficiency of 40.7 %) was obtained for the PZT–PVDF (40–60) films, while the maximum output voltage of about 10 V (~10 µA) was obtained for the PZT–PVDF (50–50) flexible film. In addition, a comparison between the properties of the lead-based and lead-free flexible films, as well as the potential use of these films as energy storage and energy harvesting systems were analyzed.

A Novel Hybrid Approach for Modeling and Optimisation of Phosphoric Acid Production through the Integration of AspenTech, SciLab Unit Operation, Artificial Neural Networks and Genetic Algorithm

AB  - The purpose of the study was to identify and predict the optimized parameters for phosphoric acid production. This involved modeling the crystal reactor, UCEGO filter (as a detailed model of the filter is not available in Aspen Plus or other simulation software), and acid separator using Sci-Lab to develop Cape-Open models. The simulation was conducted using Aspen Plus and involved analyzing 10 different phosphates with varying qualities and fractions of P2O5 and other minerals. After a successful simulation, a sensitivity analysis was conducted by varying parameters such as capacity, filter speed, vacuum, particle size, water temperature for washing the filtration cake, flow of recycled acid and strong acid from the separator below the filter, flow of slurry to reactor 1, temperature in reactors, and flow of H2SO4, resulting in nearly one million combinations. To create an algorithm for predicting process parameters and the maximal extent of recovering H3PO4 from slurry, ANN models were developed with a determination coefficient of 99%. Multi-objective optimization was then performed using a genetic algorithm to find the most suitable parameters that would lead to a higher reaction degree (96–97%) and quantity of separated H3PO4 and lower losses of gypsum. The results indicated that it is possible to predict the influence of process parameters on the quality of produced acid and minimize losses during production. The developed model was confirmed to be viable when compared to results found in the literature.

AB  - Road traffic accidents are a significant public health issue, accounting for almost 1.3 million deaths worldwide annually, with millions more experiencing non-fatal injuries. A variety of subjective and objective factors contribute to the occurrence of traffic accidents, making it difficult to predict and prevent them on new road sections. Artificial neural networks (ANN) have demonstrated their effectiveness in predicting traffic accidents using limited data sets. This study presents two ANN models to predict traffic accidents on common roads in the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Srpska (Bosnia and Herzegovina) using objective factors that can be easily determined, such as road length, terrain type, road width, average daily traffic volume, and speed limit. The models predict the number of traffic accidents, as well as the severity of their consequences, including fatalities, injuries and property damage. The developed optimal neural network models showed good generalization capabilities for the collected data foresee, and could be used to accurately predict the observed outputs, based on the input parameters. The highest values of r2 for developed models ANN1 and ANN2 were 0.986, 0.988, and 0.977, and 0.990, 0.969, and 0.990, accordingly, for training, testing and validation cycles. Identifying the most influential factors can assist in improving road safety and reducing the number of accidents. Overall, this research highlights the potential of ANN in predicting traffic accidents and supporting decision-making in transportation planning.

The influence of building material structure on radon emanation

AB  - In this work, the radon emanation coefficients for selected building materials that are most often used in Serbia for covering floor surfaces (concrete, concrete screed, granite, glazed ceramic tiles, marble, roofing tile, and terrazzo tile) were determined, and the influence of the material structure on their values. The concentration of 226Ra activity in the samples was determined using the gamma spectrometry method. Radon emanation was measured with the RAD7 device. The porosity of the samples was tested using mercury intrusion porosimetry and water absorption methods, and the structural analysis was performed using x-ray diffraction analysis and x-ray fluorescence analysis. The measured values of 226Ra activity concentrations were in the range (4.93–298) Bq kg−1, and the estimated values of the radon emanation coefficients were in the range (0.55–6.05) %. The obtained results indicate that the chemical and mineralogical composition, method of production, and the 226Ra activity concentration have an influence on the emanation of radon from the material. No significant correlation was found between the radon emanation coefficient and the open porosity of the material, most likely due to the inhomogeneous presence of pores of different dimensions in the materials. It was established that the total value of the emanation coefficient depends on the emanation coefficient for pores ⩽100 μm in size.

AB  - In this work, the radon emanation coefficients for selected building materials that are most often used in Serbia for covering floor surfaces (concrete, concrete screed, granite, glazed ceramic tiles, marble, roofing tile, and terrazzo tile) were determined, and the influence of the material structure on their values. The concentration of 226Ra activity in the samples was determined using the gamma spectrometry method. Radon emanation was measured with the RAD7 device. The porosity of the samples was tested using mercury intrusion porosimetry and water absorption methods, and the structural analysis was performed using x-ray diffraction analysis and x-ray fluorescence analysis. The measured values of 226Ra activity concentrations were in the range (4.93–298) Bq kg−1, and the estimated values of the radon emanation coefficients were in the range (0.55–6.05) %. The obtained results indicate that the chemical and mineralogical composition, method of production, and the 226Ra activity concentration have an influence on the emanation of radon from the material. No significant correlation was found between the radon emanation coefficient and the open porosity of the material, most likely due to the inhomogeneous presence of pores of different dimensions in the materials. It was established that the total value of the emanation coefficient depends on the emanation coefficient for pores ⩽100 μm in size.

AB  - Unlike other studies that only determined the chemical composition of essential oils depending on their geographic origin, this research investigated the effect of weather conditions (temperature, precipitation, and insolation) on the chemical composition of Nepeta nuda L. essential oil. The collection of wild-growing N. nuda was carried out during three successive years, 2019, 2020, and 2021 at Rtanj Mountain (Serbia) on the same date (July 7th). Essential oil extraction from the plant was performed by hydro-distillation. After gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric analysis, a total of 102 volatile compounds were separated from N. nuda, during the observed period, 28 were unidentified, compromising between 5.0% and 8.7%, depending on the year. A multiple linear regression model was created, and statistical analyses were performed to provide knowledge about the prediction, feature profile, and the similarity in contents of active compounds of the N. nuda essential oil. The influence of temperature on the accumulation of the most abundant component, 1,8-cineole, was positive, while the impact of precipitation and insolation was negative. According to the cluster tree, there are four chemotypes of N. nuda essential oil: with nepetalactone, 1,8-cineole, mixed (nepetalactone+1,8-cineole+germacrene D), and nonspecific chemotypes. Bearing in mind that the biological activity of a raw material depends on the chemotype and environmental factors, this is a topic that deserves a more detailed approach. The N. nuda and its essential oil are promising materials with high biological potential, and these deserve further detailed investigation.

Weather Conditions Influence on Lavandin Essential Oil and Hydrolate Quality

AB  - Lavandula sp. essential oil and hydrolate are commercially valuable in various industry branches with the potential for wide-ranging applications. This study aimed to evaluate the quality of these products obtained from L. x intermedia cv. ‘Budrovka’ for the first time cultivated on Fruška Gora Mt. (Serbia) during three successive seasons (2019, 2020, and 2021). Essential oil extraction was obtained by steam distillation, and the composition and influence of weather conditions were also assessed, using flowering tops. The obtained essential oils and hydrolates were analysed by gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector (GC-FID) and gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A linear regression model was developed to predict L. x intermedia cv. ‘Budrovka’ essential oil volatile compound content and hydrolate composition during three years, according to temperature and precipitation data, and the appropriate regression coefficients were calculated, while the correlation analysis was employed to analyse the correlations in hydrolate and essential oil compounds. To completely describe the structure of the research data that would present a better insight into the similarities and differences among the diverse L. x intermedia cv. ‘Budrovka’ samples, the PCA was used. The most dominant in L. intermedia cv. ‘Budrovka’ essential oil and hydrolate were oxygenated monoterpenes: linalool, 1,8-cineole, borneol, linalyl acetate, and terpinene-4-ol. It is established that the temperature was positively correlated with all essential oil and hydrolate compounds. The precipitations were positively correlated with the main compounds (linalool, 1,8-cineole, and borneol), while the other compounds’ content negatively correlated to precipitation. The results indicated that Fruška Gora Mt. has suitable agro-ecological requirements for cultivating Lavandula sp. and providing satisfactory essential oil and hydrolate.

AB  - Garden angelica (Angelica archangelica L.), native to the northern temperate region, is widespread in Europe and Asia. Since the middle ages, it has been used for healing and as a vegetable in traditional dishes. In the modern era, it has been proven that A. archangelica has a complex chemical composition. The main derivatives that contribute to the plant’s biological activities are essential oil and coumarins. In this review, the focus is on the cross-analysis of the taxonomy of A. archangelica, and its distribution in different regions, with the presentation of the richness of its biochemical composition, which overall contributes to the widespread use of the roots of this plant in folk medicine. It belongs to the plants that were introduced to the wider area of Central, Eastern, and Southern Europe; as a medicinal plant, it represents a significant part of the medical flora of many areas. Cluster analysis of pooled data indicates a clear differentiation of chemotypes.

The majority of the divergence in yield and essential oil content is associated with environmental aspects, including weather conditions, soil variety and cultivation techniques. Therefore, aniseed production was examined in this study. The categorical input variables for artificial neural network modelling were growing year (two successive growing years), growing locality (three different locations in Vojvodina Province, Serbia) and fertilization type (six different treatments). The output variables were morphological and quality parameters, with agricultural importance such as plant height, umbel diameter, number of umbels, number of seeds per umbel, 1000-seed weight, seed yield per plant, plant weight, harvest index, yield per ha, essential oil (EO) yield, germination energy, total germination, EO content, as well as the share of EOs compounds, including limonene, cis-dihydro carvone, methyl chavicol, carvone, cis-anethole, trans-anethole, β-elemene, α-himachalene, trans-β-farnesene, γ-himachalene, trans-muurola-4(14),5-diene, α-zingiberene, β-himachalene, β-bisabolene, trans-pseudoisoeugenyl 2-methylbutyrate and epoxy-pseudoisoeugenyl 2-methylbutyrate. The ANN model predicted agricultural parameters accurately, showing r2 values between 0.555 and 0.918, while r2 values for the forecasting of essential oil content were between 0.379 and 0.908. According to global sensitivity analysis, the fertilization type was a more influential variable to agricultural parameters, while the location site was more influential to essential oils content.

Seasonal Variations in Essential Oil Composition of Immortelle Cultivated in Serbia

AB  - Our previous research has proven that the immortelle (Helichrysum italicum) essential oil (EO) grown in Serbia possesses respectable biological potential and desirable composition of volatile compounds with the potential for a wide range of applications in the food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical industries. Within this study, the impact of seasonal variations (temperature, precipitation, and insolation) during three successive years (2017, 2018, and 2019), on the volatile profile of γ-curcumene + ar-curcumene immortelle chemotype was determined. Steam distillation was utilized to extract EO from the plant material, followed by chromatographic mass spectrometric analysis revealing 50 volatile compounds. A multiple linear regression model was developed, and principal component analyses were conducted to deliver detailed information regarding the prediction, component profile, and parallel contents of active compounds of the immortelle EO. Under Serbian agro-ecological conditions, with appropriate harvest method, immortelle can achieve two harvests per year: the first in July, and the second in August. The γ-curcumene + ar-curcumene chemotype usually occurs as the dominant chemotype in the region of the ex-Yugoslavia countries. This chemotype probably developed as an adaptation to climatic conditions, and spring and summer precipitation positively influenced curcumene accumulation in plants. Such a phenomenon was especially noticeable in the first harvest.
