AB - Eu3+ doped Zirconia coatings were synthesized by the electrochemical plasma electrolytic oxidation method in only 8 min from the pure zirconium substrate. The phase constitution from pure monoclinic to pure tetragonal and exactly in between was achieved by using different concentrations of Na3PO4 and NaAlO2 electrolytes. The complex emission spectra composed of Eu2+, Eu3+, and ZrO2 defect emission greatly depend on the excitation wavelength and phase constitution. Eu3+ photoluminescence properties depend on the phase, which is reflected by the different Stark splitting and different intensities of transitions. Thus, both phase and photoluminescent properties of ZrO2 coatings are fine-tuneable. Judd-Ofelt analysis was performed from the emission and excitation spectra, showing that all 3 intensity parameters depend linearly on the phase constitution, being largest in the pure monoclinic phase. The mixed phase has Judd-Ofelt parameters between those in pure phases. Eu3+ has 2.45 times more preference to get incorporated into the tetragonal than in the monoclinic phase in the mixed phase samples. The general equation for Judd-Ofelt parameters in a compound with mixed constituents and probability of incorporation is introduced, allowing also for a prediction of the spectrum shape based on the Judd-Ofelt parameters of pure-phase compounds. Python software code for estimating the percent of incorporation by multiple linear regression model is also provided.

AB - Gold nanoparticles were functionalized by amino acid tryptophan and vitamin riboflavin - a resonance energy transfer (RET) pair of biomolecules. The presence of the gold nanoparticles resulted in 65% increase in RET efficiency. Because of enhanced RET efficiency, the photobleaching dynamics of the fluorescent molecules at the surface of the nanoparticles is different from that of molecules in solution. The observed effect was used for detection of the functionalized nanoparticles within biological material rich with autofluorescent species. Synchrotron radiation deep-ultraviolet fluorescence microscopy is used to study the photobleaching dynamics of the fluorescence centers within human hepatocellular carcinoma Huh7.5.1 cells incubated with the nanoparticles. The fluorescent centers were classified according to their photobleaching dynamics, which enabled the discrimination of the cell areas where the accumulation of the nanoparticles takes place, even though the particles were smaller than the spatial resolution of the images.

AB - Barium titanate (BT) perovskite particles were surface modified by means of mechanical treatment and used as inorganic component in polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) based composites. The changes in electrical properties of the composite films with increasing in filler content were followed by dielectric spectroscopy, breakdown strength and D-E measurements. A comparison of the properties of the composites prepared with untreated and mechanically activated particles revealed that there is a significant difference in their performances at low filler concentrations (<20 wt%). Introduction of the surface modified ceramic particles into PVDF matrix led to an increase of the dielectric constant without affecting significantly the electrical breakdown strength. In contrast, when as received BT particles were used a filler, both dielectric constants and breakdown strengths of the composite films were lower than the corresponding values observed for the pure PVDF. At higher concentrations, however, the influence of pre-treatment of the filler on the effective electrical properties becomes less significant. The obtained results were discussed in terms of the pronounced crystallization of polar β and γ crystal phases of PVDF in the presence of surface modified BT fillers, which is confirmed by Raman spectroscopy.

AB - To investigate the influence of spinel structure and sintering temperature on the functional properties of BaTiO3/NixZn1−xFe2O4 (x = 0, 0.5, 1), NiFe2O4, ZnFe2O4, and Ni0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 were in situ prepared by thermal decomposition onto BaTiO3 surface from acetylacetonate precursors. As-prepared powders were additionally sintered at 1150 °C and 1300 °C. X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) were used for the detailed examination of phase composition and morphology. The magnetic, dielectric, and ferroelectric properties were investigated. The optimal phase composition in the BaTiO3/NiFe2O4 composite, sintered at 1150 °C, resulted in a wide frequency range stability. Additionally, particular phase composition indicates favorable properties such as low conductivity and ideal-like hysteresis loop behavior. The favorable properties of BaTiO3/NiFe2O4 make this particular composite an ideal material choice for further studies on applications of multi-ferroic devices.

AB - The combination of an intense absorption of visible light and p-type semiconducting nature makes spinel cobalt oxide (Co3O4) a very attractive material for various optoelectronic applications. However, the traditional methods for its synthesis have been either time- and energy-consuming or relying on toxic chemicals. To solve this issue, a simple, facile, and eco-friendly method of synthesis was successfully developed to obtain spinel Co3O4 nanoparticles. The novel method for obtaining pure and monophasic Co3O4 reported here is based on the thermal decomposition of hexaaquacobalt(II) D-camphor10-sulfonate at 900 °C. This fast solid-state synthesis route overcomes the disadvantages of many combustion methods, most critically by avoiding the use of toxic organic solvents. The synthesized material was subjected to a detailed characterization to assess its potential for use as a nanocatalyst. The band gap measurements indicated the presence of two band gaps, one at 2.10 eV and another at 1.22 eV, confirming the purity and semiconducting properties of the sample. The electrochemical studies demonstrated a significant enhancement in the electron transfer kinetics with the addition of the synthesized Co3O4 to the carbon-paste electrode, leading to an enhanced electrocatalytic performance. These prominent functional properties, suitable for a wide range of technological applications, pave way for the implementation of the reported method for the synthesis of Co3O4 on a larger industrial scale. © 2023 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

AB - To investigate the effect of synthesis procedure and sintering temperature on the functional properties of perovskite/spinel ceramics, BaTiO3/CoFe2O4 composites were prepared by thermal decomposition, coprecipitation, and microemulsion method, and sintered at 1150°C and 1300°C. The phase composition and morphology of as-prepared powders as well as sintered ceramics were thoroughly examined by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The dielectric and ferroelectric measurements were performed in detail. Generally, the samples sintered at 1300°C had better performances than those sintered at 1150°C. The composite synthesized by thermal decomposition and sintered at 1300 °C stands out among other prepared BaTiO3/CoFe2O4 ceramics, owing to high stability in the wide frequency range and low leakage currents. The obtained results indicate that such composite might be successfully applied as a functional multiferroic.

abstract = "To investigate the effect of synthesis procedure and sintering temperature on the functional properties of perovskite/spinel ceramics, BaTiO3/CoFe2O4 composites were prepared by thermal decomposition, coprecipitation, and microemulsion method, and sintered at 1150°C and 1300°C. The obtained results indicate that such composite might be successfully applied as a functional multiferroic., (EDS). AB - In the search for environmentally friendly materials with a wide range of properties, polymer composites have emerged as a promising alternative due to their multifunctional properties. This study focuses on the synthesis of composite materials consisting of four components: bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) modified with magnetic Fe3O4 , and a mixture of BaTiO3 (BT) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The BT powder was mechanically activated prior to mixing with PVDF. The influence of BT mechanical activation and BNC with magnetic particles on the PVDF matrix was investigated. The obtained composite films’ structural characteristics, morphology, and dielectric properties are presented. This research provides insights into the relationship between mechanical activation of the filler and structural and dielectric properties in the PVDF/BT/BNC/Fe3O4 system, creating the way for the development of materials with a wide range of diverse properties that support the concept of green technologies.

AB - Catalytic materials are the greatest challenge for the commercial application of water electrolysis (WEs) and fuel cells (FCs) as clean energy technologies. There is a need to find an alternative to expensive and unavailable platinum group metal (PGM) catalysts. This study aimed to reduce the cost of PGM materials by replacing Ru with RuO2 and lowering the amount of RuO2 by adding abundant and multifunctional ZnO. A ZnO@RuO2 composite in a 10:1 molar ratio was synthesized by microwave processing of a precipitate as a green, low-cost, and fast method, and then annealed at 300°C and 600°C to improve the catalytic properties. The physicochemical properties of the ZnO@RuO2 composites were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Raman and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The electrochemical activity of the samples was investigated by linear sweep voltammetry in acidic and alkaline electrolytes. We observed good bifunctional catalytic activity of the ZnO@RuO2 composites toward HER and OER in both electrolytes. The improved bifunctional catalytic activity of the ZnO@RuO2 composite by annealing was discussed and attributed to the reduced number of bulk oxygen vacancies and the increased number of established heterojunctions.

AB - Luminescence thermometry uses temperature-dependent emission of light for remote sensing. Dy3+ is established as a perspective ion for high-temperature probes, but given that there is an infinite number of potential hosts it is impossible to find conventionally the one with the best performance. Judd-Ofelt thermometric model can predict sensitivities but it was not yet experimentally validated on Dy3+ ion. Pure phase CaYAlO4:Dy3+ powder was synthesized via the modified Pechini method. Photoluminescence spectra were taken from 300 to 600 K. Luminescence intensity ratio was estimated using 4 I15/2 and 4 F9/2 levels. Experimentally obtained thermometric parameters and sensitivities showed an excellent matching with those obtained from the Judd-Ofelt, indicating the potential application of the Judd-Ofelt model for fast assessment of Dy3+-doped luminescent sensor thermometric perspective. The maximum absolute and relative sensitivities are ~0.001 K− 1 at 600 K and ~1.4% K− 1 at 300 K, respectively. The optimum temperature range for the CaYAlO4:Dy3+ probe is from 370 to 616 K.

AB - The industrial applications of luminescent coatings for temperature sensing and high-security QR codes have multiple inherent problems in their application (speed, cost, industrial feasibility) or properties (poor adhesion, chemical, thermal stability, or thermal contact). Luminescent coatings created by the electrochemical Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) process have superior properties and can be grown directly within minutes, but are limited to the number of possible luminescent dopants. Having the unlimited possibility for doping on the PEO coatings would provide for superior coatings in all industrially appealing features. Herein, it is shown that adding any luminescent powder results in its partial dissociation and incorporation of its constituents, while it also gets incorporated as a whole. In this manner, alumina coatings are grown with various combinations and concentrations of divalent samarium and europium, and yttrium oxide with trivalent europium ions. These polycrystalline coatings whose microhardness is next to that of the diamond produce intense luminescence in the blue and red regions. Al2O3:Eu2+/Sm2+/3+ + Y2O3:Eu3+ coatings show an excellent temperature sensing performance from the cryogenic up to the high temperatures. Ultimately, the proof-of-concept of the luminescent QR code by the electrochemical process is realized creating a highly secure code with unprecedented environmental stability. © 2023 Wiley-VCH GmbH.

AB - Zeolite ZSM-5 and zeolite β were modified by aqueous ion exchange with cerium and then calcined (cal) to obtain Ce-ZSM-5, Ce-ZSM-5 cal, Ce-β, and Ce-β cal electrocatalysts. X-ray powder diffraction analysis, Fourier Ttransform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method revealed changes in the structure and porosity of zeolites upon calcination. Voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were used for testing four zeolites for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in alkaline media. OER starts the earliest at Ce-β cal with onset overpotential 50, 70, and 110 mV lower than Ce-ZSM-5 cal, Ce-ZSM-5, and Ce-β. Ce-β cal further showed the lowest OER Tafel slope (114 mV dec− 1 ). Consequently, the highest OER current density was recorded in the case of Ce-β cal, followed by Ce-β, Ce-ZSM-5 cal, and Ce-ZSM-5. Regarding ORR, Ce-ZSM-5 cal showed the lowest Tafel slope (70 mV dec− 1 ) with the highest current densities that remained constant during the chronoamperometry test with a negligible decrease of 4%. It could be concluded that calcined forms exhibit better performance for OER and OER than their parent, non-calcined forms due to more active sites available for OER/ORR and decreased charge-transfer resistance.

Regarding ORR, Ce-ZSM-5 cal showed the lowest Tafel slope (70 mV dec− 1 ) with the highest current densities that remained constant during the chronoamperometry test with a negligible decrease of 4%. It could be concluded that calcined forms exhibit better performance for OER and OER than their parent, non-calcined forms due to more active sites available for OER/ORR and decreased charge-transfer resistance.",

AB - Epoxy-rich carbon-based composites are well recognized materials in industries owing to their good mechanical properties and thermal stability. Here, dielectric properties of composites based on bisphenol-A-epoxy resin loaded with 5, 6, 10, and 15 wt% of graphite flakes (GF) have been studied. The frequency and temperature dependence of the dielectric permittivity, dielectric loss, and ac conductivity have been examined in temperature (−103 to 97°C) and frequency (20 Hz–200 kHz) range. Influence of the filler surface chemistry have been studied for composites loaded with 5 wt% GF obtained: (i) under wet milling, without or with adding Triton-100x as a surfactant, or (ii) under dry milling in the presence of KOH. The composite made of epoxy loaded with 5 wt% exfoliated expanded graphite flakes (EEG), was also prepared. The surface treatment with KOH notably increased dielectric constant of the composite, keeping low dielectric loss, while treatment with Triton-100x significantly increased tanδ. The composite loaded with exfoliated expanded graphite shows higher ac conductivity than those obtained with flaky graphite, GF. Possibility to change dielectric properties of the composites without changing the loading content can be used as an approach in tailoring one with desired dielectric properties.

AB - This study demonstrated that Ta2O5 coatings formed by plasma electrolytic oxidation of tantalum substrate in an alkaline electrolyte containing Ho2O3 nanoparticles have the potential to be used as a host for Ho3+ ions. Down-conversion photoluminescence (PL) intensity of Ta2O5:Ho3+ is strongly dependent on the concentration of Ho3+ incorporated into Ta2O5 coatings, which depends on the duration of the PEO process and the concentration of Ho2O3 nanoparticles in the electrolyte. In the PL emission spectra, dominant green PL emission bands of Ho3+ centered at around 544 nm are assigned to 5S2,5F4 → 5I8 transitions. Also observed are red and near-infrared emission bands centered at around 658 nm and 758 nm, corresponding to the 5F5 → 5I8 and 5S2,5F4 → 5I7 transitions of Ho3+, respectively. The PL excitation spectra of Ho3+ doped Ta2O5 coatings show a broad band from 250 to 325 nm caused by electron transfer between completely filled 2p orbitals of O2− ions and 4f orbitals of Ho3+ ions and a series of sharp peaks between 325 and 500 nm attributed to direct excitation of Ho3+ ions from the 5I8 ground state to higher levels of the 4f-manifold. Ta2O5:Ho3+ coatings do not exhibit detectable up-conversion PL under 980 nm excitation, but Ta2O5:Ho3+/Yb3+ coatings formed in an alkaline electrolyte containing both Ho2O3 and Yb2O3 nanoparticles do. Also discernible are three groups of up-conversion PL emission bands linked to the 4f–4f transition of Ho3+ ions. With increasing Yb3+ ion concentration in coatings, there is a progressive increase in the PL intensity of all up-conversion emission bands, indicating an efficient energy transfer from excited Yb3+ ions to Ho3+ ions. The potential mechanisms for up-conversion that could result in the population of different excited levels are discussed.

AB - Orthorhombic Ta2O5:Er3+ coatings were obtained by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) of tantalum in an alkaline electrolyte with the addition of Er2O3 particles in various concentrations. Down-conversion photoluminescence (PL) emission spectra is featured by sharp bands attributed to 4f–4f transitions of Er3+. The most intense green PL emission band centered at 544 nm is attributed to the 4S3/2 → 4I15/2 emission of Er3+. Population paths of the Er3+ down-conversion PL happen under resonant excitation conditions of the Er3+ from ground state 4I15/2 to higher levels, and via a broad violet charge transfer excitation band. Both excitation energy and Er content have an impact on the PL emission response in Ta2O5:Er3+ coatings. The 4I15/2 → 4G11/2 transition is the dominant excitation pathway for the PL emission of Er3+. Up-conversion PL spectra created after 980 nm irradiation of Ta2O5:Er3+ coatings have characteristic 4f–4f transitions of Er3+. The intensity of the green 4S3/2 → 4I15/2 is much higher compared to the red 4F9/2 → 4I15/2 emission of Er3+. Co-doping Ta2O5:Er3+ coatings with sensitizer Yb3+ ions increased the up-conversion emission PL intensity of Er3+ thanks to the efficient energy transfer from Yb3+ to Er3+. The red up-conversion PL intensity of 4F9/2 → 4I15/2 transition increases more rapidly with respect to green emission 4S3/2 → 4I15/2. A phonon-assisted energy back transfer process from Er3+ ions (4S3/2 → 4I13/2) to the neighboring Yb3+ ions (2F7/2 → 2F5/2) leads to enhanced red emission 4F9/2 → 4I15 and decreased green emission 4S3/2 → 4I15/2. © 2023, The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society.

AB - The dielectric properties of nanocomposites based on isotactic polypropylene (iPP) and atactic polystyrene (aPS) obtained by novel, simple, and environmentally friendly treatment technique have been analyzed in this study. The best treatment conditions to obtain nanocomposites with embedded core-shell particles with enhanced dielectric properties were considered. Treatment of polymer matrices in water solution iron(II)-chloride had the most pronounced precipitation effect, that was directly related to the appearance of higher transition metal concentrations in the iPP and aPS matrices, in comparison to treatments in the other two transition metal salts, MnCl2 and NiCl2. Relative dielectric constant and loss tangent have been studied in the frequency range from 20 Hz to 9 MHz. Embedded core-shell nanoparticles (from 15 to 150 nm in diameter) in a very small amount (1.72E-8 mol/cm3 to 1.17E-5 mol/cm3) resulted in significant improvement (2.5% up to 9.1%) and stabilization of relative dielectric constant value toward higher frequencies and also lowering loss tangent in compare to starting polymer matrices. These properties indicate that materials obtained with the presented treatment technique can be applied as microelectronic packing and with further development of the method in order to obtain a higher concentration of metal ions as energy storage devices.

AB - Nickel ferrite nanoparticles were synthesized via thermal decomposition of β-diketonato complexes of nickel(II) and iron(III). The mechano-chemical activation of the complex precursors was used to ensure the increase in the reaction activity and consequently reduce thermal decomposition temperature. The prepared sample was thoroughly characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, FT-IR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with electron dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). X-ray powder diffraction and FT-IR confirmed the spinel phase of the investigated powder. SEM and TEM revealed the ultrafine nature of nanosized polygonal particles, with a pronounced agglomeration effect. The capacity for electrocatalytic applications was examined using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Electrocatalytic measurements pointed out that the addition of 5% of nickel ferrite as a modifier to carbon paste electrode caused a current increase and a decrease of the EIS semicircle. Further increase in the amount of the modifier decreased heterogeneity of the electrode surface and served as excellent sensor for the detection of gallic acid in the concentration range from 1 to 10 µM with the detection limit of 0.27 µM. This unambiguously indicated the significant improvement in electrode transfer rate and better characteristics of the diffusion layer. © 2022, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

AB - Surface modification of magnetic nanoparticles with poly-L-lysine, proline, and tryptophan was used to design potential theranostic agents for the application in cancer diagnosis and radionuclide-hyperthermia therapy. Characterization of bare and functionalized magnetic nanoparticles was performed in detail. The transparency of the examined magnetic nanoparticles was measured in the non-alternating magnetic field for a complete and better understanding of hyperthermia. For the first time amino acid-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles were labeled with theranostic radionuclides 131I and 177Lu. The specific absorption rate (SAR) procured for poly-L-lysine functionalized magnetic nanoparticles (SAR values of 99.7 W/g at H0 = 15.9 kA/m and resonant frequency of 252 kHz) demonstrated their possible application in magnetic hyperthermia. Poly-L-lysine functionalized magnetic nanoparticles labeled with 177Lu showed the highest radiochemical purity (>99.00 %) and in vitro stability in saline and serum (>98.00 % up to 96 h). The in vivo analysis performed after their intravenous administration in healthy Wistar rats presented good in vivo stability for several days. Encouraging results as well as magnetic and radiochemical properties of 177Lu–PLL-MNPs (80 °C) justify their further testing toward the potential use as theranostic agents for diagnostic and combined radionuclide-hyperthermia therapeutic applications.

AB - This study investigates the beryllium-7, lead-210 and caesium-137 activity concentrations in aerosol filter samples collected monthly along the 45°N zonal belt over 1991–2019. Sampling was performed in three locations, one in Serbia and two in Slovenia, and the Slovenian data records are published here for the first time. The activity concentrations were determined by standard gamma spectrometry. The obtained results are in general agreement with the literature data for Europe. The data sets at different sites display similarities in measurement ranges, overall means and seasonal cycles. Still, statistical tests show significant differences among the radionuclides’ concentrations across the locations. To investigate underlying processes that affect radioactivity in the surface air in this region, multivariate statistical concepts are applied to the radionuclides’ concentrations and local meteorological parameters. Discriminant analysis shows that all three sites are well separated from each other. Principal component analysis gives common pattern of interconnection between the observables: temperature has a stronger influence on the behaviour of beryllium-7 and lead-210 than that of caesium-137, but a negative correlation of the radionuclides’ concentrations with precipitation seems the strongest for caesium-137. Principal component analysis also shows local differences in the degree of relationship between the meteorological parameters and activity concentrations of the investigated radionuclides. This is an important finding for future atmospheric transport studies.

AB - Coordination effects have been considered through the most common interactions in the crystal structures of fluoro compounds (C-H/F and F/F interactions). The supramolecular profile of these effects is based on quantum-chemical calculations for the assessment of the interaction strength and electrostatic potential maps, which provide a qualitative insight into the examined effect. Coordination of aliphatic fluorides leads to an increase of the negative potential of the F atoms, and, hence, an increase in the hydrogen-bonding acceptor ability (strengthening of C-H/F interactions) and a weakening of the F/F interactions, due to an increase in repulsive interactions between the F atoms. There is no significant change in the potential of the F atoms due to coordination of C6-aromatic fluorides, as in the case of aliphatic ones. This results in slight changes in the strengths of the C-H/F and F/F interactions (coupled with parallel interaction at large offsets, PILO), in a noticeable enhancement of stacking interactions, as well as in a significant enhancement of interactions involving the π-system (F/πand C-H/πinteractions). It has also been shown that a decrease in the charge of the metal ions leads to a decrease in the negative potential of the F atom and also that the nature of the metal ion has a significant influence on the value of the potential of the F atoms.
