Meta-signature guided investigation of miRNA candidates as potential biomarkers of oral cancer

AB  - Objectives This study aimed to experimentally validate dysregulated expression of miRNA candidates selected through updated meta-analysis of most commonly deregulated miRNAs in oral cancer and to explore their diagnostic and prognostic potential. Materials and methods Five miRNAs (miR-31-3p, miR-135b-5p, miR-18a-5p, miR-30a-5p and miR-139-5p) from updated meta-signature were selected for validation by qRT-PCR method in 35 oral cancer clinical specimens and adjacent non-cancerous tissue. Results Updated meta-analysis has identified 13 most commonly deregulated miRNAs in oral cancer. Seven miRNAs were consistently up-regulated (miR-21-5p, miR-31-3p, miR-135b-5p, miR-31-5p, miR-424-5p, miR-18a-5p and miR-21-3p), while five were down-regulated (miR-139-5p, miR-30a-3p, miR-375-3p, miR-376c-3p and miR-30a-5p). Increased expression of miR-31-3p and miR-135b-5p, and decreased expression of miR-139-5p and miR-30a-5p were confirmed in oral cancer compared to adjacent non-cancerous tissue. A three miRNAs combination (miR-31-3p, miR-139-5p and miR-30a-5p) gave the most promising diagnostic potential for discriminating oral cancer from non-cancerous tissue (AUC: 0.780 [95% CI: 0.673–0.886], p < 0.0005, sensitivity 94.3%, specificity 51.4%). High expression of miR-135b-5p, miR-18a-5p and miR-30a-5p was associated with poor survival (p = 0.003, p = 0.048, p = 0.016 respectively). Conclusion miR-31-3p, miR-139-5p and miR-30a-5p panel was confirmed as a potential diagnostic biomarker when distinguishing oral cancer from non-cancerous tissue. miR-135b-5p, miR-18a-5p and miR-30a-5p might serve as potential biomarkers of poor survival of oral cancer patients.

AB  - Objective Cholesteatoma is a challenging chronic pathology of the middle ear for which pharmacologic therapies have not been developed yet. Cholesteatoma occurrence depends on the interplay between genetic and environmental factors while master regulators orchestrating disease progression are still unknown. Therefore, in this review, we will discuss the diagnostic and therapeutic potential of non-coding RNAs (ncRNA) as a new class of regulatory molecules. Methods We have comprehensively reviewed all articles investigating ncRNAs, specifically micro RNAs (miRNAs) and long ncRNAs (lncRNA/circRNA) in cholesteatoma tissue. Results Candidate miRNA approaches indicated that miR-21 and let-7a are the major miRNAs involved in cholesteatoma growth, migration, proliferation, bone destruction, and apoptosis. Regulatory potential for the same biological processes was also observed for miR-203a. The NF-kB/miR-802/PTEN regulatory network was in relation to observed miR-21 activity in cholesteatoma as well. High throughput approaches revealed additional ncRNAs implicated in cholesteatoma pathology. Competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) analysis highlighted lncRNA/circRNA that could be “endogenous sponge” for miR-21 and let-7a based on the hypothesis that RNA transcripts can communicate with and regulate each other by using shared miRNA response elements. Conclusion In this review, we summarize the discoveries and role of ncRNA in major pathways in cholesteatoma and highlight the potential of miRNA-based therapeutics in the treatment of cholesteatoma. Level of Evidence: NA.

AB  - Diatomite (diatomaceous earth) and clay minerals deposits from the mining basin Kolubara, Serbia, are natural materials with high economic potential in many fields. As received and treated materials, diatomite and clay were characterized using X-ray diffraction, mercury intrusion porosimetry, particle size distribution, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Activity concentrations for natural radionuclides 40K, 226Ra and 232Th and anthropogenic radionuclide 137Cs in diatomite and clay were determined by gamma spectrometry with HPGe detector. For diatomite and clay, the mean activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K were found to be 9, 26 and 173 Bq kg-1 and 19, 26 and 470 Bq kg-1, respectively. In the present study was to show that these materials are environmentally safe for further use in many fields.

AB  - Redirecting waste biomass back into the economy can reduce their burden on the environment. The use of waste biomass for the production of fuels, value-added materials or natural fillers has significant economic and environmental benefits. Physico-chemical characterization of waste biomass (plum pomace and fig pomace) was done by proximate, elemental, biochemical analysis, FTIR and SEM analysis. The calorific value of both biomasses can be compared with the calorific value of lignite, which rises their potential use as a solid biofuel. The combustion behavior of biomass was investigated by thermal analysis techniques. Based on thermal degradation experiments performed at four heating rates a kinetic analysis of the biomass decomposition process was accomplished. The kinetic study was done using Kissinger method, Ozawa method, Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) method, Starink method, and Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS) method. The value of activation energy obtained by different kinetic methods was ∼210 kJ/mol for plum pomace and ∼162 kJ/mol for fig pomace. Estimated activation energy values were used to calculate thermodynamic parameters. In addition to the fact that the obtained results can serve as a useful reference for the design of pyrolysis reactors, this research has ecological significance because it solves the problem of solid waste disposal.

AB  - The need for stable, chemical resistant and conductive materials is on the rise in recent times. Graphene shows promising electrical conductivity and chemical stability, but the production of a continual, conductive layer is limited and expensive. Silver nanowires (AgNWs) are both conducive and economically viable, but they are sensitive to water and oxygen. In this study, graphene oxide (GO) and AgNWs were synthesized and combined in different mass ratios (3:1, 2.5:1.5, and 1:1) to obtain chemically stable composites with improved electrical properties. Composites were reduced using ascorbic acid. With the increase of AgNWs to GO mass ratio, the surface of the free-standing composite film improved: the root mean square roughness was lowered from 376 nm for GO to 168 nm for the composite with the mass ratio of GO:AgNWs 1:1, while the sheet resistance was lowered from 146 × 106 Ω/□ to 4 Ω/□. For the first time, the effects of gamma irradiation on the structure of the composites were studied. Doses of 15, 25, and 35 kGy were applied.

AB  - Newly designed mesoporous brushite-metakaolin-based geopolymer materials were examined with an idea for using this material as a potential adsorbent for Pb(II) removal from aqueous solutions. As a starting component for geopolymer synthesis, a natural raw kaolinite clay with theaddition of 2 wt.%, 4 wt.%, 6 wt.%, 8 wt.%, and 10 wt.% of pure brushite was used. Phase, structural,morphological, and adsorption properties of newly synthesized mesoporous brushite-metakaolin geopolymer materials were examined in detail by the means of XRPD, FTIR, SEM-EDS, BET/BJH, and ICP-OES methods. The ICP-OES results showed that the synthesized material samples with 2 wt.%, 4 wt.%, and 6 wt.% of brushite possess significant adsorption properties and the mechanisms of the adsorption process can be attributed to chemisorption. The most notable result is that brushite-metakaolin-geopolymer with 2 wt.% of brushite have the best efficiency removal, more than 85% of Pb(II).

Addition of larger amount of zircon (20 wt.%) hinders the progress of geopolymerization reaction and consequently decreases compressive strength.

AB  - The endangered loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) are a relatively abundant sea turtle species in Madeiran waters, where they encounter various environmental stressors: from natural to anthropogenic. The physiological stress response is increased corticosterone (CS) level in the blood, achieving 2 ng/mL. Although there are various analytical methods for determining the CS concentration in turtle blood, most of them require tedious procedures for the preparation. In this work, we have tested the possibility of using matrix-assisted laser desorption and ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI TOF MS) for fast screening and detection of CS in blood from a turtle captured at the coast of Madeira Island. MALDI does not require sample derivatization and is suitable for low sample volume. The linearity, precision, and limit of detection and quantification with three organic MALDI matrices were investigated in this study. The signal-to-noise ratio of the CS-derived signal was used as a parameter for quantification. Isotopically labelled corticosterone was added as a correction factor at fixed concentration to achieve better linearity and precision. Our results demonstrate that this method has the potential for quantification of CS in turtle blood. However, the lowest concentration of CS extracted from plasma that was still detectable by MALDI TOF MS was about 0.04 mg/mL, which is about ten times higher than the expected CS concentration in blood.

AB  - In the last decade, targeting membrane lipids in cancer cells has been a promising approach that deserves attention in the field of anticancer drug development. To get a comprehensive understanding of the effect of the drug [Ru(η5-Cp)(PPh3)2CN] (RuCN) on cell lipidic components, we combine complementary analytical approaches, matrix-assisted laser desorption and ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI TOF MS) and synchrotron radiation-based Fourier transform infrared (SR-FTIR) spectroscopy. Techniques are used for screening the effect of potential metallodrug, RuCN, without and with drug carriers (carbon dots (CDs) and nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs)) on the lipids of the human ovarian cancer cell line A2780. MALDI TOF MS results revealed that the lysis of ovarian cancer membrane lipids is promoted by RuCN and not by drug carriers (CDs and N-CDs). Furthermore, SR-FTIR results strongly suggested that the phospholipids of cancer cells undergo oxidative stress after the treatment with RuCN that was accompanied by the disordering of the fatty acid chains. On the other hand, using (N-)CDs as RuCN nanocarriers prevented the oxidative stress caused by RuCN but did not prevent the disordering of the fatty acid chain packing. Finally, we demonstrated that RuCN and RuCN/(N-)CDs alter the hydration of the membrane surface in the membrane–water interface region.

AB  - We study how the nonlinear propagation dynamics of bulk states may be used to distinguish topological phases of slowly driven Floquet lattices. First, we show how instabilities of nonlinear Bloch waves may be used to populate Floquet bands and measure their Chern number via the emergence of nontrivial polarization textures in a similar manner to static (undriven) lattices. Second, we show how the nonlinear dynamics of nonstationary superposition states may be used to identify dynamical symmetry inversion points in the intracycle dynamics, thereby allowing anomalous Floquet phases to be distinguished from the trivial phase. The approaches may be readily implemented using light propagation in nonlinear waveguide arrays.

AB  - Background This study aimed to investigate the effects of lithium treatment on gene expression and activity of the prefrontal antioxidant enzymes: copper, zinc superoxide dismutase (SOD1), manganes superoxide dismutase (SOD2), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in animals exposed to chronic restraint stress (CRS). Methods The investigated parameters were quantified using real-time RT-PCR, Western blot analyses, and assays of enzyme activities. Results We found that lithium treatment decreased gene expression of SOD2, as well as the activities of SOD1 and SOD2 in chronically stressed rats to the levels found in unstressed animals. However, lithium treatment in animals exposed to CRS increased prefrontal GPx activity to the levels found in unstressed animals. Conclusions These findings confirm that treatment with lithium induced the modulation of prefrontal antioxidant status in chronically stressed rats. Our results may be very important in biomedical research for understanding the role of lithium in maintaining the stability of prefrontal antioxidant defense system in neuropsychiatric disorders caused by chronic stress.

abstract = "Background This study aimed to investigate the effects of lithium treatment on gene expression and activity of the prefrontal antioxidant enzymes: copper, zinc superoxide dismutase (SOD1), manganes superoxide dismutase (SOD2), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in animals exposed to chronic restraint stress (CRS). Methods The investigated parameters were quantified using real-time RT-PCR, Western blot analyses, and assays of enzyme activities. Results We found that lithium treatment decreased gene expression of SOD2, as well as the activities of SOD1 and SOD2 in chronically stressed rats to the levels found in unstressed animals. However, lithium treatment in animals exposed to CRS increased prefrontal GPx activity to the levels found in unstressed animals. Conclusions These findings confirm that treatment with lithium induced the modulation of prefrontal antioxidant status in chronically stressed rats. Our results may be very important in biomedical research for understanding the role of lithium in maintaining the stability of prefrontal antioxidant defense system in neuropsychiatric disorders caused by chronic stress.",

AB  - Development of cost-effective, bi-functional carbon electrocatalysts via direct carbonization of ionic liquids (bis(cholinium) tetrachlorocobaltate(II) ([Ch]2[CoCl4]) and bis(1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium) tetrachlorocobaltate(II) ([Bmim]2[CoCl4])) is reported herein for the first time. Carbon electrocatalysts, dual-doped with cobalt and nitrogen, were tested for oxygen reduction (ORR) and oxygen evolution (OER) reactions. Both materials show high bi-functional catalytic activity and excellent stability due to synergistic effects arising from the presence of nitrogen and cobalt. Electrocatalyst prepared by carbonization of [Ch]2[CoCl4] show exceptional activity and selectivity toward ORR. Conversely, electrocatalyst prepared from [Bmim]2[CoCl4] showed a slightly better OER performance indicating that different catalytic sites are responsible for O2 reduction and H2O oxidation. Parent CoO particles with graphitic nitrogen boost activity for ORR, while elemental Co supported by nitrogen atoms is responsible for OER activity. Finally, energy consumption during electrolytic oxygen production was calculated revealing energy saving when using two materials as anode electrocatalysts.

AB  - Spider silk-maghemite (SS-γ-Fe2O3) composite was obtained by simple and fast co-precipitation method at room temperature. The fibers were coated with maghemite nanoparticles with the average size of 25 nm. According to DTA, maghemite NPs contributed the thermal stability of the composite. Magnetic properties of as obtained composite were estimated. At room temperature, the system was is in a superparamagnetic state, while at temperature of 5 K the magnetic moments were blocked. This composite is seen as a novel hybrid material with superparamagnetic properties for possible applications in bioseparation, biosensors, magnetographic printing, magnetic screens, and magnetic filters as well as sensing/actuating components of MEMS.

AB  - Understanding nucleate pool boiling heat transfer and, in particular the accurate prediction of conditions that can lead to critical heat flux, is of the utmost importance in many industries. Due to the safety issues related to the nuclear power plants, and for the efficient operation of many heat transfer units including fossil fuel boilers, fusion reactors, electronic chips, etc., it is important to understand this kind of heat transfer. In this paper, a comprehensive review of analytical and numerical work on nucleate pool boiling heat transfer is presented. In order to understand this phenomenon, existing studies on boiling heat transfer coefficient and boiling heat flux are also discussed, as well as characteristics of boiling phenomena such as bubble departure diameter, bubble departure frequency, active nucleation site density, bubble waiting and growth period and their impact on pool boiling heat transfer.

AB  - Carbonaceous solid-phase extraction (SPE) sorbent, efficient in isolation and enrichment of multiclass pesticides and pharmaceuticals from water, was synthesized starting from cheap waste beech sawdust and using KOH as the activated agent. The first step in carbon material preparation was hydrothermal carbonization of the waste beech sawdust. Following hydrothermal treatment, the obtained material was activated, using different amounts of KOH. It was found that applied activation leads to changes in material structure, an increase in specific surface area, and a decrease in the number of surface oxygen groups compared to carbonized sample. SPE procedure of multiclass pesticides and pharmaceuticals from water using activated carbonized beech sawdust (AcSD) was optimized by selecting the appropriate elution solvents, the sample pH, and the sample volume to obtain the highest enrichment efficiency. The optimized SPE procedure was applied for water analysis using different AcSD samples as a sorbent for analyte preconcentration. Activated carbon sorbent, obtained with the highest amount of KOH, showed the highest recoveries regarding the most analytes, which were comparable with the recoveries obtained by commercial cartridges. © 2022 Serbian Chemical Society. AB  - The brain is the softest organ in the body, and any change in the mechanical properties of the tissue induces the activation of glial cells, astrocytes and microglia. Amyloid plaques, one of the main pathological features of Alzheimer's disease (AD), are substantially harder than the surrounding brain tissue and can activate astrocytes and microglia resulting in the glial engulfment of plaques. Durotaxis, a migratory preference towards stiffer tissue, is prompting microglia to form a mechanical barrier around plaques reducing amyloid β (Aβ) induced neurotoxicity. Mechanoreceptors are highly expressed in the brain, particularly in microglia. The large increase in the expression of the mechanoreceptor Piezo1 was observed in the brains from AD animal models and AD patients in plaque encompassing glia. Importantly, Piezo1 function is regulated via force-from–lipids through the lipid composition of the membrane and membranous incorporation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) can affect the function of Piezo1 altering mechanosensitive properties of the cell. On the other hand, PUFAs dietary supplementation can alter microglial polarization, the envelopment of amyloid plaques, and immune response and Piezo1 activity was implicated in the similar modulations of microglia behavior. Finally, PUFAs treatment is currently in use in medical trials as the therapy for sickle cell anemia, a disease linked with the mutations in Piezo1. Further studies are needed to elucidate the connection between PUFAs, Piezo1 expression, and microglia behavior in the AD brain. These findings could open new possibilities in harnessing microglia in AD and in developing novel therapeutic strategies.

AB  - The aim of the study was to investigate the potency of Cinnamomum camphora cineoliferum and Melaleuca ericifolia essential oils (EOs) against facultative and obligate anaerobes isolated from teeth’ infected root canals. Biocompatibility of the EOs was also in the study focus. Chemical composition of the EOs was determined by GC/MS analysis. Their antibacterial potential and cytotoxicity were evaluated by microdilution and MTT assays, respectively. Statistical analysis was performed by Student’s t-test and one way ANOVA. Two the most abundant constituents of C. camphora cineoliferum EO were 1,8-cineole and sabinene, while in M. ericifolia EO the dominant were linalool and 1,8-cineole. MICs achieved against all tested strains were in the ranges 0.95±0.50 - 22.50±0.00 mg/mL and 0.65±0.00 - 23.35±7.80 mg/mL for the C. camphora cioneoliferum and M. ericifolia EOs, respectively. Statistical analysis showed that response to both oils has not differed between facultative and obligate anaerobes. Sensitivity pattern of the tested strains was different for the EOs and the positive control triple antibiotic paste (TAP): while E. faecalis and certain strains of S. salivarius were among the most sensitive to the oils, they were the least susceptible to the conventional antimicrobial TAP. Although the observed cytotoxicity of the EOs after 30 min of cell exposition was high (50.78-66.35% and up to 70% for C. camphora cioneoliferum and M. ericifolia EOs, respectively) it was lower than that of positive control (1.5% NaOCl, p<0.05). To conclude, both EOs showed promising antibacterial potential and achieved at least the same or even better biocompatibility than the conventional intracanal antimicrobials. Obtained results strongly encourage future research with an aim to formulate C. camphora cioneoliferum and M. ericifolia EO- based irrigants and medicaments, that could be used in endodontic practice.

We study the dynamical properties of nonlinear compact localized modes that can be continued from linear flatband modes. We show how the stability of the compact localized modes can be tuned by the nonlinearity strength or the applied artificial flux. Our model can be realized using ring resonator lattices or nonlinear waveguide arrays.

AB  - Extensive use of pesticides resulting in their accumulation in the environment presents a hazard for their non-target species, including humans. Hence, efficient remediation strategies are needed, and, in this sense, adsorption is seen as the most straightforward approach. We have studied activated carbon fibers (ACFs) derived from viscose fibers impregnated with diammonium hydrogen phosphate (DAHP). By changing the amount of DAHP in the impregnation step, the chemical composition and textural properties of ACFs are effectively tuned, affecting their performance for dimethoate removal from water. The prepared ACFs effectively reduced the toxicity of treated water samples, both deionized water solutions and spiked tap water samples, under batch conditions and in dynamic filtration experiments. Using the results of physicochemical characterization and dimethoate adsorption measurements, multiple linear regression models were made to reliably predict performance towards dimethoate removal from water. These models can be used to quickly screen among larger sets of possible adsorbents and guide the development of novel, highly efficient adsorbents for dimethoate removal from water. © 2022 by the authors. AB  - The characterization of nanocomposite samples which contain Cu, Fe-species, prepared by the sol-gel method, was established by Nikolić et al., in a previous article (Nikolić et al. in Journal of Solid State Physics 513:1, 2021). In this study, the magnetic behavior of nanocomposite samples was examined. The basic parameters of the room- and low-temperature magnetic hysteresis loops are discussed. To better describe the shape of magnetic hysteresis loop, the authors proposed to consider additional parameters - measures of the exterior angles of the hysteresis curve. Behavior of hysteresis parameters and exterior angles, caused by annealing treatment, was investigated by measuring hysteresis loops at two measured temperatures: 298K, and 5K. Correlation between changes in the behavior of hysteresis parameters and exterior angles was discussed. AB  - The reduction of the photogenerated charge carriers' influence in periodically illuminated thin silicon membranes is investigated by using the experimental setup of an open photoacoustic cell in the standard range of modulation frequencies from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. It is confirmed that the deposition of a 200 nm thin film of titanium dioxide on the 30- and 50 μm silicon membrane leads to a large increase of the thermoelastic component of the photoacoustic signal, which restores the flexibility lost to the membrane under the influence of photogenerated carriers. The effect of the thermoelastic component enhancement is analyzed by observing the displacement of the tested samples along the heat propagation axis, depending on the carrier density and temperature differences on the illuminated and unilluminated sides, for different membrane thicknesses and a constant film thickness. It is found that the effect of enhancement of several orders of magnitude is more visible in thinner membranes due to higher ratios between the film and membrane thicknesses.

Pyrolysis kinetics of [4-(hydroxymethyl)phenoxymethyl]polystyrene (Wang) resin using master-plot method and distributed reactivity model

AB  - The pyrolysis of [4-(hydroxymethyl)phenoxymethyl]polystyrene (Wang) resin was studied by dynamic simultaneous thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and derivative thermogravimetry techniques. The studied resin is used as the most commonly polymer supports in the peptide synthesis. A developed experimental master plots (exp-MP) model is presented that can be used to describe in more detail the pyrolysis of the resin established upon 4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol (PHB) on polystyrene, occurring throughout TGA experiments. This model assumes that the Wang resin is pyrolyzed through three parallel independent reaction steps, whereby their separation was performed through deconvolution procedure of the complex conversion rate curves. The mechanistic nature of each stage of Wang resin pyrolysis was explained by applying a combination of kinetic models such as diffusion mechanism, random nucleation and subsequent growth and chemical reactions mechanisms. The kinetic triplet parameters obtained in the present paper were then compared with those available in the literature. Within this kinetic study, the fraction distribution analysis (via distributed reactivity model) was performed, enabling reliable prediction of liquid products produced during the pyrolysis of the solid support of the Wang resin. abstract = "The pyrolysis of [4-(hydroxymethyl)phenoxymethyl]polystyrene (Wang) resin was studied by dynamic simultaneous thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and derivative thermogravimetry techniques. The studied resin is used as the most commonly polymer supports in the peptide synthesis. A developed experimental master plots (exp-MP) model is presented that can be used to describe in more detail the pyrolysis of the resin established upon 4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol (PHB) on polystyrene, occurring throughout TGA experiments. This model assumes that the Wang resin is pyrolyzed through three parallel independent reaction steps, whereby their separation was performed through deconvolution procedure of the complex conversion rate curves. The mechanistic nature of each stage of Wang resin pyrolysis was explained by applying a combination of kinetic models such as diffusion mechanism, random nucleation and subsequent growth and chemical reactions mechanisms. The kinetic triplet parameters obtained in the present paper were then compared with those available in the literature. Within this kinetic study, the fraction distribution analysis (via distributed reactivity model) was performed, enabling reliable prediction of liquid products produced during the pyrolysis of the solid support of the Wang resin. AB  - The paper presents a generalized model of the photothermal response of a polymer sample. The model is based on a linear non-Fourier heat conduction equation that considers thermal memory and complex heat capacity. The physical meaning of imaginary heat capacity is discussed from the point of view of non-equilibrium thermodynamics. The derived heat conduction equation introduces two additional dynamic properties of a medium to time-varying heat conduction: inertial and kinetic relaxation time. The influence of these relaxation times on photothermal response is analyzed. It is shown that the derived model could explain the measured photoacoustic response of different semi-crystalline polyethylenes (PEs). The obtained results show that photothermal techniques can be employed to estimate relaxation phenomena in polymeric materials when the frequency scale of the experiment is greater than the inverse value of any relaxation time. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.

AB  - Enhanced optical properties of TiO2 thin films can be achieved by doping or coating with metals. Metal-doped TiO2 can reduce electron-hole recombination and increase hydroxyl radical concentration on the surface of TiO2, resulting in increase of the photocatalytic activity. TiO2 and TiO2-Au thin films were obtained by DC magnetron sputtering of Ti target with Ar ions in O2 atmosphere. In the case of Au buffered TiO2 thin films, two different systems were deposited for comparison. Post deposition annealing at 400 °C was carried out in nitrogen atmosphere for 3 h. The structural and optical characteristics of the prepared films were investigated in detail by the combination of high-resolution microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. The photo-degradation rate was measured using Rhodamine B which simulated pollutant. Post deposition annealing resulted in diffusion of Au atoms through the layer as it was revealed by transmission electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The obtained TiO2 thin films were found to be amorphous after deposition and annealing at 400 °C leads to crystallization of anatase phase. Analysis of the binding energy in the corresponding X-ray photoelectron spectra has confirmed stoichiometry of TiO2 and that concentration of Au on the surface can be controlled by sputtering and annealing conditions, thus changing optical properties by influencing the surface plasmonic nature. All Au doped TiO2 thin films exhibited enhanced wettability and photo-degradation rates when compared to pristine titania films. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.

AB  - The mVINIS ion source, a part of FAMA installation at Vinca Institute of Nuclear Sciences, is able to produce multiple charged heavy ion beams through the utilization of vapors created by the process of melting solids inside the miniature oven (mini-oven). The mini-oven that was used previously could only reach the maximum temperature of 800?C, which is far too low for evaporating most metals. For this purpose, a higher operating-temperature of 1500?C was needed. Our study focuses on numerical finite element method analysis of the temperature distribution of newly designed mini-oven.
