AB - Conventional designs of multiport splitters rely on concatenation of directional couplers or multimode interference [1, 2]. However, the splitters show a considerable insertion loss and fast bandwidth drop with the number of ports. Inverse nanodesigns enable broadbandwidth semiconductor splitters, however, at high fabrication and design costs [3, 4]. In this work we present efficient and low-cost inverse design and experimental realization of multiport splitters with near-zero insertion loss, broad bandwidth and small footprint. Design is based on single-mode linearly coupled waveguide arrays which support periodic light propagation [5]. It allows for realisation of arbitrary splitting ratios by simple adjustment of waveguide separations. To demonstrate the technique, we designed equal 1×N power splitters and fabricated them in a borosilicate wafer by femtosecond laser writing method. The splitters show zero insertion loss within the experimental error, bandwidth of 20−60 nm and low imbalance < 0.5 dB. Their footprint scales exponentially with the waveguide separation, which can be reduced to the limit of mode confinement. Remarkably, the splitting ratio can be wavelength and array-length tuned. The proposed splitters offer new possibilities for path-entanglement generation, multipath interferometery on chip [6] and spatial mode multiplexing [7].

AB - This paper considers possible uses of fruit-based waste for the production of valuable chemicals and biofuel precursors through recycling by thermochemical conversion. Slow pyrolysis of goji berry mesocarp as sugar-riched feedstock was investigated using simultaneous thermal analysis measurements in non-isothermal conditions. This work announced that pyrolysis of goji berry mesocarp represents a promising route to obtaining an important key platform chemical - 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF). To establish the process mechanism, two kinetic approaches were used for kinetic parameters determination: first, Friedman’s and Vyazovkin’s model-free (inverse) methods supported by numerical optimization of the process, and second, the model-based (direct) method. Model-free results showed a complex evolution of activation energy with conversion, indicating a multi-step mechanism. It was found that autocatalytic dehydration of fructose (in the presence of Lewis acids) is responsible for the production of 5-HMF at a low heating rate (5.0 K/min) with a maximum 5-HMF theoretical yield of 63.20 %. Higher heating rates (10.0 K/min and 15.0 K/min) trigger the fructose autogenesis behavior which opens the transferability channel to glucose (substrate) engagement for 5-HMF theoretical high yield production. It was revealed that differences between kinetic parameters are a consequence of the change in the mechanism of glycosidic bond cleavage. The validity of the proposed reaction mechanism scheme and accuracy of kinetic parameters was confirmed by modulated dynamic predictions.

AB - The aim of the article is to show the effects of the main gasifier operating parameters, such as temperature, equivalence ratio, steam-to-fuel ratio, and gasification medium selection, on the gasification performance of sewage sludge. Using the developed one-dimensional mathematical thermodynamic equilibrium model for plasma and fluidized bed gasification, a comprehensive parametric study is established. The model is based on the principle of the minimum of the Gibbs function and uses only the ultimate and proximate analysis data as input to the model. The output of the model gives the equilibrium composition of the gasses produced. When comparing different gasification media, gasification with water steam gives a higher yield of H2 and CO in the syngas produced. Further comparison of the two gasification processes in terms of energy consumption is shown. The collected results can be useful in further analysis of the gasification processes, such as energy and exergy analysis and kinetics.

AB - The pyrolysis process of two low-rank coals (lignite Kostolac and Kolubara), and two wastematerials (spent coffee ground and tyre rubber granulate) as well as their blends, have beenexamined by preliminary thermogravimetric analysis. Thermal decomposition experiments wereperformed in an N2 atmosphere on raw (pyrolysis) and blend (co-pyrolysis) samples at heatingrates of 10, 15, and 20 K min-1. The lignite-waste blend was created in the following masspercentage ratios 90:10, 80:20, and 70:30. Based on obtained experimental data, the stronginteractions were identified between the examined lignite and waste materials during copyrolysis, indicating the presence of a positive synergistic effect. The characteristics of the rawwaste sample and the heating rate were recognized as two key parameters that influenced thesynergy result with lignite sample, in lignite-spent coffee ground blends. For lignite-waste rubbergranulate blends, the blending ratio is critical for beneficial synergistic effect (ratios of wasterubber granulate with lignite less than 30% are preferred). The probable synergistic mechanismswere further explained using performed kinetic analysis by varying the effective activation energywith temperature and conversion. In addition, the influence of micro-scale conditioncharacteristics such as heating rate (as the experimental regulatory factor) on the magnituderesponse of synergistic effect during co-pyrolysis was also investigated in this work.

AB - Cytotoxicity and prooxidative properties evaluation of three Wells-Dawson polyoxotungstates that were published as potential contrast-enhancing staining agent (CESA) candidates for micro-computed tomography (microCT): parent Wells-Dawson POM α2-K6P2W18O62.14H2O (parent WD), monolacunary Wells-Dawson POM α2-K10P2W17O61.20H2O (lacunary WD), and 1:2 hafnium(IV)-substituted Wells-Dawson POM K16[Hf(α2-P2W17O61)2]·19H2O (Hf-WD 1:2), was carried out in vitro. Oxidative stress indicators, reduced glutathione (GSH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were determined in human blood plasma after 4 and 24 h treatment with the selected polyoxotungstates, within the concentration range 1-100 μM at 37 °C, and polyoxotungstate-induced cytotoxicity was assessed by monitoring cell viability in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs). The results demonstrated that each of the studied promising CESAs resulted in a decrease of human PBMC viability in concentration- and time-dependent manner, and Hf-WD 1:2 exhibited the strongest cytotoxic properties inducing up to 50% decrease of the cell viability related to corresponding control. However, only Hf-WD 1:2 might be considered a potential prooxidant that resulted in a significant decrease of human plasma GSH level, whereas none of the investigated polyoxotungstates did not cause membrane lipid damage. Conclusively, parent WD, lacunary WD, and Hf-WD 1:2 could not be considered safe primarily from a cytotoxic point of view, thus more extensive in vitro and in vivo studies are needed for the toxicological profile assessment of the studied promising CESA candidates for the soft tissue visualization using microCT.

Dobijene vrednosti proizvedenih radionuklida u rečnom sedimentu ne predstavljaju rizik po životnu sredinu, The paper presents the results of activity concentrations of 90Sr and 137Cs in the river sediment of the Danube in Belgrade for 2020. The results were obtained as part of a systematic examination of the radioactivity level in the environment in Belgrade. For determination of 90Sr content, radiochemical method was used, while determination of 137Cs content was done by gamma spectrometric analysis. The obtained values of artificial radionuclides in Danube river sediment do not pose a risk to the environment.",
