AB - Electrodeposition of selected d-metals by in-situ electrodeposition as a method for improvement of electrocatalytic activity of conventional electrodes for alkaline hydrogen evolution has been attracting the attention of researchers for about two decades. The modification of metal electrodes by ionic activators as a combination of two (binary systems) or three (ternary systems) d-metal complexes added in electrolytic solution were represented in many studies. Better catalytic performances and higher energy efficiency compared to the common electrodes is provided by a number of affordable and inexpensive solutions resulting from this research. Based on the combinations of selected d-metal complexes added in-situ to the electrolyte during electrolysis, this work provides a systematic overview of the binary and ternary systems of ionic activators, that contribute to energy savings in alkaline electrolysers, with the particular attention paid to the discussion of similarities and universal principles. Theoretical background and the fundamental properties that lay beyond the observed improvements of electrode performance upon activation by ionic activators is also represented.

AB - High concentrations of LTA zeolite (27-52mass%) were embedded in poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) matrix to obtain composite hydrogels with porosity and active sites originating from both components. Substandard mechanics of PMAA and aggregation of zeolite particles, were thereby overcome. The composites had remarkably higher density than PMAA xerogel (1700 to1400 kg m−3), higher crosslinking density (54.8 to1.29 mol m−3) and lower swelling degree (41 to 420 kg kg−1). Zeolite particles were uniformly dispersed in PMAA matrix and there was no agglomeration or leaching of zeolite despite very high concentrations. XRD patterns revealed that the inclusion of zeolite particles affected the short-range order in the PMAA matrix. Being an active filler LTA zeolite notably improved thermal stability and mechanics of PMAA hydrogel, multiplying the storage modulus 5.2 times in dry and 21.8 times in swollen state. Structure–property correlations were provided making the base for further development of tailor-made zeolite-PMAA composite hydrogels.

AB - This paper presents a study and comparison of surface effects induced by picosecond and nanosecond laser modification of a Ti6Al4V alloy surface under different ambient conditions: air and argon- and nitrogen-rich atmospheres. Detailed surface characterization was performed for all experimental conditions. Damage threshold fluences for picosecond and nanosecond laser irradiation in all three ambient conditions were determined. The observed surface features were a resolidified pool of molten material, craters, hydrodynamic effects and parallel periodic surface structures. Laser-induced periodic surface structures are formed by multi-mode-beam nanosecond laser action and picosecond laser action. Crown-like structures at crater rims are specific features for picosecond Nd:YAG laser action in argon-rich ambient conditions. Elemental analysis of the surfaces indicated nitride compound formation only in the nitrogen-rich ambient conditions. The constituents of the formed plasma were also investigated. Exploring the impact of process control parameters on output responses has been undertaken within the context of laser modification under different environmental conditions. Parametric optimization of the nanosecond laser modification was carried out by implementing an advanced method based on Taguchi’s parametric design and multivariate statistical techniques, and optimal settings are proposed for each atmosphere.

AB - Thermo-chemical conversion via the pyrolysis of cigarette butt (CB) filters was successfully valorized and upcycled in the pre-carbonization and carbonization stages. The pre-carbonization stage (devolatilization) of the precursor material (cellulose acetate filter, r-CAcF) was analyzed by micro-scale experiments under non-isothermal conditions using TG-DTG-DTA and DSC techniques. The results of a detailed kinetic study showed that the decomposition of r-CAcF takes place via complex mechanisms, including consecutive reaction steps and two single-step reactions. Consecutive stages include the α-transition referred to as a cellulose polymorphic transformation (cellulose I → II) through crystallization mechanism changes, where a more thermodynamically ordered system was obtained. It was found that the transformation rate of cellulose I → II (‘cellulose regeneration’) is strongly affected by the presence of alkali metals and the deacetylation process. Two single-step reactions showed significant overlapping behavior, which involves a nucleation-controlled scission mechanism (producing levoglucosan, gaseous products, and abundant radicals) and hydrolytic decomposition of cellulose by catalytic cleavage of glycosidic bonds with the presence of an acidic catalyst. A macro-scale experiment showed that the operating temperature and heating rate had the most notable effects on the total surface area of the manufactured carbon. A substantial degree of mesoporosity with a median pore radius of 3.1695 nm was identified. The presence of macroporosity on the carbon surface and acidic surface functional groups was observed.

AB - Brassinosteroids (BRs) are a class of plant hormones that play important roles in regulating various physiological and developmental processes in plants. One of the most effective BRs involved in modulating crop growth is 24-epibrassinolide (24-EBL). The effects of different concentrations of 24-EBL on various biochemical and biophysical parameters critical to early growth stages and seedling development were investigated using two maize hybrids, ‘ZP 434’ (a new-generation hybrid) and ‘ZP 704’ (an older-generation hybrid). The evaluation of results is based on measurements of germination percentage, morphometric parameters, redox status, comparative analysis of thermodynamic parameters (such as Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, entropy), and the concentration of specific sugars in different parts of maize seedlings. The results indicate that the germination and initial growth of maize seedlings are influenced by the flow of crucial sugars from the remaining seed (as a source of nutrients) towards the plumule and radicle (as sink organs). Furthermore, alterations in Gibbs free energy play a significant role in these sugar transfers within the maize seedlings. The seed germination was most affected by the highest concentrations of 24-EBL, showing inhibitory effects, whereas lower and moderate concentrations of exogenously added 24-EBL exhibited a beneficial influence on the initial phases of seedling growth. The mentioned approach gives new insights into source–sink relationships and can be used as a quantitative measure of the germination energy, which until now has been a qualitative criterion in seed science.

The mentioned approach gives new insights into source–sink relationships and can be used as a quantitative measure of the germination energy, which until now has been a qualitative criterion in seed science.",

AB - This paper presents distribution and seasonal variations of tritium, radioactive isotope of hydrogen, in Sava River in Belgrade. Tritium besides its natural origin also has an artificial origin, through human activity including the operation of nuclear power plants, nuclear weapons manufacturing and atomic bomb tests. Knowing the concentration of tritium in the Sava River in Belgrade is important because it is located downstream from the Krško Nuclear Power Plant in Slovenia. Analysis of tritium concentrations in surface water samples were done in composite monthly samples during 2017-2022. Tritium activity was determined by liquid scintillation spectrometer using electrolytic enrichment. Seasonal variations were estimated by determination of average monthly concentrations and seasonal indices.

AB - Novel cotton-based TiO2/Ag/TiO2 nanocomposites for wastewater treatment were developed by fine chemical synthesis path with the goal of coping with wastewater issues and environmental remediation. The photocatalytic performances of nanocomposites were tested during photodegradation processes of RB, AO7 and MR under simulated solar light. Double- and single-loaded nanocomposites were synthesized by a simple bottom-up approach implying in situ photoreduction of Ag+ ions on the surface of TiO2 NPs previously deposited on cotton fibers from colloids. The spherical-like colloidal TiO2 NPs (4.5 nm) and TiO2/Ag NPs (8 nm) and the formation of uniform TiO2/Ag and TiO2/Ag/TiO2 nano-coatings on cotton fibers were examined by TEM and FESEM. The reduction of Ag+ ions on TiO2 surface was undoubtedly proven by the appearance of SPR band of Ag NPs in UV/Vis spectra. Raman spectroscopy clearly confirmed the presence of anatase TiO2 in nanocomposites. Quantitative determination of TiO2 and Ag in nanocomposites was accomplished using EDX and ICP–OES. The cotton-based TiO2/Ag/TiO2 nanocomposite showed the highest photocatalytic efficiency (> 90%) and maintained its removal efficiency after three reuse cycles, indicated its exceptional photochemical ability. The initial idea of improved photocatalytic performances of a TiO2 NPs double-layer with immobilized Ag NPs was justified as the TiO2/Ag/TiO2 processed sample contributed additional binding sites for dye molecules. Considering that the photocatalytic activity of the cotton-based TiO2 and TiO2/Ag samples was practically imperceptible, it can be assumed that the synthesized Ag NPs act predominantly as electron traps in the double-loaded synthesized system.

AB - Green hydrogen produced by alkaline electrolysis is a promising solution to address the world’s increasing energy demand while mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. However, the efficient and cost-effective production of green hydrogen via alkaline electrolysis requires improvements. This paper presents an in situ activation process that simplifies the alkaline electrolysis technology while enhancing the catalytic activity of electrodes for the hydrogen evolution reaction. The aim of this research is to enhance the energy efficiency of alkaline electrolysis and decrease the energy consumption for hydrogen production. To achieve this goal, ionic activators comprising Ni, Zn, and Mo were incorporated into the standard electrolyte solution. Our results demonstrate that the anticipated improvement in the catalytic activity of the d-metal combination, surpassing even that of precious metals, has been successfully attained. As a result, a 20% reduction in energy consumption (REC) for the hydrogen produced has been observed. The catalytic activity of the added activators for the hydrogen evolution reaction was discussed by analyzing the mechanism of the reaction via Tafel analysis and EIS techniques. These findings offer a promising approach to improve alkaline electrolysis and enhance the production of green hydrogen.

AB - In this experimental study, picosecond laser treatment was performed on a nickel-based superalloy Nimonic 263, aiming to investigate the surface effects induced by irradiation in different atmospheric conditions and, concerning changes in surface composition, regarding the possibility for improvement of its functionality. Besides the varying laser parameters, such as a number of pulses and pulse energy, environmental conditions are also varied. All surface modifications were carried out in standard laboratory conditions and a nitrogen- and argon-rich atmosphere. The resulting topography effects depend on the specific laser treatment and could be categorized as increased roughness, crater formation, and formation of the laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS). Changes in the chemical surface composition are distinguished as the potential formation of the protective oxides/nitrides on the sample surface. Numerous characterization techniques analyse the resulting effects on the topography and surface parameters. The multi-response parametric optimization of the picosecond laser process was performed using an advanced statistical method based on Taguchi’s robust parameter design. Finally, the optimal parameter conditions for Nimonic 263 modification are suggested.

AB - Road traffic accidents are a significant public health issue, accounting for almost 1.3 million deaths worldwide annually, with millions more experiencing non-fatal injuries. A variety of subjective and objective factors contribute to the occurrence of traffic accidents, making it difficult to predict and prevent them on new road sections. Artificial neural networks (ANN) have demonstrated their effectiveness in predicting traffic accidents using limited data sets. This study presents two ANN models to predict traffic accidents on common roads in the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Srpska (Bosnia and Herzegovina) using objective factors that can be easily determined, such as road length, terrain type, road width, average daily traffic volume, and speed limit. The models predict the number of traffic accidents, as well as the severity of their consequences, including fatalities, injuries and property damage. The developed optimal neural network models showed good generalization capabilities for the collected data foresee, and could be used to accurately predict the observed outputs, based on the input parameters. The highest values of r2 for developed models ANN1 and ANN2 were 0.986, 0.988, and 0.977, and 0.990, 0.969, and 0.990, accordingly, for training, testing and validation cycles. Identifying the most influential factors can assist in improving road safety and reducing the number of accidents. Overall, this research highlights the potential of ANN in predicting traffic accidents and supporting decision-making in transportation planning.

AB - The main idea of the present study was to investigate the impact of the ongoing world crisis on the socio-economic issues in Serbia concerning building materials usage and purchase. This research fills in the gaps in the literature and contributes to the comprehension of how the crisis has affected salaries, market pricing, and materials consumption in the building sector. The data are gathered through a questionnaire and analyzed using a statistical methodology (frequencies, descriptive statistics, and Spearman’s correlations). Most of the former studies investigated the surveys conducted on specialists in the field, while this study analyzed the perspectives of random people. Socio-demographic issues are analyzed along with materials consumption before and after the crisis. A special emphasis is given to ecological awareness and novel materials usage. Additionally, it captures a broad shift in the economy and ecological consciousness in a developing country. The majority of respondents are open to using novel building materials and products, but their choice would largely be influenced by cost, the amount of effort involved, and their understanding of the advantages. Statistical approaches revealed that the crisis has a considerable impact on the markets for construction and building supplies, altering consumers’ decisions when purchasing. This contribution lays the groundwork for developing countries in the modern world to improve sustainability and adopt circular thinking. Professionals in Serbia need to have a more eco-aware mindset and enhance how they provide pertinent information to potential clients. This study is limited by the number of respondents. For future mathematical modeling and forecasting, more answerers are needed.

abstract = "The main idea of the present study was to investigate the impact of the ongoing world crisis on the socio-economic issues in Serbia concerning building materials usage and purchase. For future mathematical modeling and forecasting, more answerers are needed.",

AB - The objective of this study was to investigate the hydrodynamics and the gas-liquid mass transfer coefficient of an external-loop airlift reactor (ELAR). The ELAR was operated in three cases: different inlet velocities of fluids, different alcohols solutions (water, 0.5% methanol, 0.5% ethanol, 0.5% propanol and 0.5% butanol) and different concentration of methanol in solutions (0%, 0.5%, 1%, 2% and 5%). The influence of superficial gas velocity and various diluted alcohol solutions on hydrodynamics and the gas-liquid mass transfer coefficient of the ELAR was studied. Experimentally, the gas hold-up, liquid velocities and volumetric mass transfer coefficient values in the riser and the downcomer were obtained from the literature source. A computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed, based on two-phase flow, investigating different liquids regarding surface tension, assuming the ideal gas flow, applying the finite volume method and Eulerian-Eulerian model. The volumetric mass transfer coefficient was determined using the CFD and artificial neural network model. The effects of liquid parameters and gas velocity on the characteristics of the gas-liquid mass transfer were simulated. These models were compared with the appropriate experimental results. The CFD model successfully simulates the influence of different alcohols regarding the number of C-atoms on hydrodynamics and mass transfer.

AB - The surface of a titanium-based alloy Ti6Al4V was subjected to modifications by a near-IR femtosecond Ti:Sapphire laser, emitting at 775 nm pulses of 200 fs duration, in single-pulse and multi-pulse regimes, with up to 400 accumulated pulses, and pulse energies ranging from 2.5 to 250 $$\upmu $$J. The whole range of induced effects is presented, from gentle ablation and pattern occurrence to substantial crater formation. Very observable laser-induced parallel periodic surface structures are reported, appearing both within the damage spot area, with low fluences, and at the peripheries of the craters, with higher fluences—but also on crater walls, and inside the crater structures. Damage threshold fluences $$({F}_{\mathrm{th}})$$and the incubation factor $$(\zeta )$$were also determined.

AB - Indigo carmine is a commonly used industrial blue dye. To determine its concentration in a commercially available food dye composed of a mixture of indigo carmine and D-glucose, this paper characterizes it through (ATR, KBr) FTIR micro-Raman as well as UV/Vis and clock: Briggs–Rauscher (BR) oscillatory reaction methods. The indigo carmine was detected in the bulk food dye only by applying micro-Raman spectroscopy, indicating a low percentage of the indigo carmine present. This research provides an improvement in the deviations from the experimental Raman spectrum as calculated by the B97D/cc-pVTZ level of theory one, resulting in a better geometrical optimization of the indigo carmine molecule compared to data within the literature. The analytical curves used to determine indigo carmine concentrations (and quantities) in an aqueous solution of food dye were applied by means of UV/Vis and BR methods. BR yielded significantly better analytical parameters: 100 times lower LOD and LOQ compared to commonly used UV/Vis. The remarkable sensitivity of the BR reaction towards indigo carmine suggests that not only does indigo carmine react in an oscillatory reaction but also its decomposition products, meaning that the multiple oxidation reactions have an important role in the BR’s indigo carmine mechanism. The novelty of this research is the investigation of indigo carmine using a clock BR reaction, opening new possibilities to determine indigo carmine in other complex samples (pharmaceutical, food, etc.).

AB - A dysregulated and overwhelming response to an infection accompanied by the exaggerated pro-inflammatory state and metabolism disturbance leads to the fatal outcome in sepsis. Previously we showed that meldonium, an anti-ischemic drug clinically used to treat myocardial and cerebral ischemia, strongly increases mortality in faecal-induced peritonitis (FIP) in rats. We postulated that the same mechanism that is responsible for the otherwise strong anti-inflammatory effects of meldonium could be the culprit of the increased mortality. In the present study, we applied the LPS-induced model of sepsis to explore the presence of any differences from and/or similarities to the FIP model. When it comes to energy production, despite some shared similarities, it is evident that LPS and FIP models of sepsis differ greatly. A different profile of sympathoadrenal activation may account for this observation, as it was lacking in the FIP model, whereas in the LPS model it was strong enough to overcome the effects of meldonium. Therefore, choosing the appropriate model of sepsis induction is of great importance, especially if energy homeostasis is the main focus of the study. Even when differences in the experimental design of the two models are acknowledged, the role of different patterns of energy production cannot be excluded. On that account, our results draw attention to the importance of uninterrupted energy production in sepsis but also call for much-needed revisions of the current recommendations for its treatment.

AB - The dominant problem that needs to be solved today is the issue of energy sources and how to use them, which must be ecological and sustainable - in a word, green. As the best candidate for a global solution to this problem, hydrogen produced electrolytically stood out as a green fuel with no carbon footprint. However, for a hydrogen-based economy to have a realistic and sustainable perspective in the future, it largely depends on its efficient and economically viable production that would meet the market's needs. Special attention in this paper is devoted to the influence of laser radiation on the possibility of improving the process of alkaline electrolysis for obtaining hydrogen, as well as on increasing the amount of separated hydrogen when the electrolytic cell is directly irradiated with a laser beam during the electrolysis process itself. After the experiments, it was determined that the application of direct irradiation of the electrolyte with a green laser at 532 nm wavelength significantly increases the amount of hydrogen produced and reduces the voltage of the electrolytic process, which is directly related to the increase in the energy efficiency of the overall hydrogen production process.

AB - The essence of this study is synthesis of a newly developed and efficient heterogeneous catalyst based on aluminum oxide support promoted with potassium iodide (KI) as active dopant responsible for pronounced catalyst activity. Modified sol–gel, reflux and hydrothermal method were used for synthesis of aluminum-oxide support using aluminum isopropoxide as a precursor. The γ-Al2O3 support and KI/γ-Al2O3 catalyst samples were examined by various experimental techniques. Effects of several operational parameters were considered and those are: methanol to sunflower oil molar ratio, catalyst loadings, reaction time and reaction stirring rate. The obtained results indicated that modified sol–gel method for synthesis of γ-Al2O3 catalyst support is the most favorable for obtaining the catalyst with superior catalytic performances in transesterification of sunflower oil. A maximum conversion (triglycerides to methyl esters) of 99.99% was achieved using the SG-KI/γ-Al2O3-770 catalyst under following optimal process parameters: 15:1 methanol to sunflower oil molar ratio, 2.5 wt% catalysts loading, 600 rpm stirring rate and 4 h of the reaction run.

AB - Removal of the β-blocker atenolol from an aqueous solution was studied using TiO2/zeolites, prepared by a simple and cost-effective solid-state dispersion method. Synthetic zeolites 13X and ZSM-5 (Si/Al = 40) and natural zeolite clinoptilolite were used as one component of the hybrid materials, whereas TiO2 nanocrystals obtained from TiO2 nanotubes and P25 TiO2 nanoparticles were used as the other. The synthesized materials were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity for the degradation of atenolol was investigated under simulated solar light. Additionally, the effect of initial pH on atenolol removal and the reusability of prepared catalysts were tested. The best loading of TiO2 was 20 wt% over all investigated zeolites. The degradation of atenolol followed the pseudo-first-order kinetics. The photocatalytic degradation of atenolol after 70 min of irradiation was ~ 50% for TiO2/13X materials, ~ 45% for clinoptilolite combined with P25 TiO2 and ~ 57% for clinoptilolite combined with TiO2 nanocrystals obtained from TiO2 nanotubes. The results showed the highest removal efficiency after 70 min of irradiation for ZSM-5 combined with P25 TiO2 (~ 94%), followed by ZSM-5 combined with TiO2 nanocrystals obtained from TiO2 nanotubes (~ 88%) at near-neutral pH (~ 6.5). The total removal of atenolol from an aqueous solution for TiO2/ZSM-5 materials resulted from two processes: adsorption and photocatalytic degradation. The TiO2/ZSM-5 photocatalysts can be easily recovered and reused as their activity was preserved after four cycles.

AB - Unlike other studies that only determined the chemical composition of essential oils depending on their geographic origin, this research investigated the effect of weather conditions (temperature, precipitation, and insolation) on the chemical composition of Nepeta nuda L. essential oil. The collection of wild-growing N. nuda was carried out during three successive years, 2019, 2020, and 2021 at Rtanj Mountain (Serbia) on the same date (July 7th). Essential oil extraction from the plant was performed by hydro-distillation. After gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric analysis, a total of 102 volatile compounds were separated from N. nuda, during the observed period, 28 were unidentified, compromising between 5.0% and 8.7%, depending on the year. A multiple linear regression model was created, and statistical analyses were performed to provide knowledge about the prediction, feature profile, and the similarity in contents of active compounds of the N. nuda essential oil. The influence of temperature on the accumulation of the most abundant component, 1,8-cineole, was positive, while the impact of precipitation and insolation was negative. According to the cluster tree, there are four chemotypes of N. nuda essential oil: with nepetalactone, 1,8-cineole, mixed (nepetalactone+1,8-cineole+germacrene D), and nonspecific chemotypes. Bearing in mind that the biological activity of a raw material depends on the chemotype and environmental factors, this is a topic that deserves a more detailed approach. The N. nuda and its essential oil are promising materials with high biological potential, and these deserve further detailed investigation.

AB - Lavandula sp. essential oil and hydrolate are commercially valuable in various industry branches with the potential for wide-ranging applications. This study aimed to evaluate the quality of these products obtained from L. x intermedia cv. ‘Budrovka’ for the first time cultivated on Fruška Gora Mt. (Serbia) during three successive seasons (2019, 2020, and 2021). Essential oil extraction was obtained by steam distillation, and the composition and influence of weather conditions were also assessed, using flowering tops. The obtained essential oils and hydrolates were analysed by gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector (GC-FID) and gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A linear regression model was developed to predict L. x intermedia cv. ‘Budrovka’ essential oil volatile compound content and hydrolate composition during three years, according to temperature and precipitation data, and the appropriate regression coefficients were calculated, while the correlation analysis was employed to analyse the correlations in hydrolate and essential oil compounds. To completely describe the structure of the research data that would present a better insight into the similarities and differences among the diverse L. x intermedia cv. ‘Budrovka’ samples, the PCA was used. The most dominant in L. intermedia cv. ‘Budrovka’ essential oil and hydrolate were oxygenated monoterpenes: linalool, 1,8-cineole, borneol, linalyl acetate, and terpinene-4-ol. It is established that the temperature was positively correlated with all essential oil and hydrolate compounds. The precipitations were positively correlated with the main compounds (linalool, 1,8-cineole, and borneol), while the other compounds’ content negatively correlated to precipitation. The results indicated that Fruška Gora Mt. has suitable agro-ecological requirements for cultivating Lavandula sp. and providing satisfactory essential oil and hydrolate.

AB - Garden angelica (Angelica archangelica L.), native to the northern temperate region, is widespread in Europe and Asia. Since the middle ages, it has been used for healing and as a vegetable in traditional dishes. In the modern era, it has been proven that A. archangelica has a complex chemical composition. The main derivatives that contribute to the plant’s biological activities are essential oil and coumarins. In this review, the focus is on the cross-analysis of the taxonomy of A. archangelica, and its distribution in different regions, with the presentation of the richness of its biochemical composition, which overall contributes to the widespread use of the roots of this plant in folk medicine. It belongs to the plants that were introduced to the wider area of Central, Eastern, and Southern Europe; as a medicinal plant, it represents a significant part of the medical flora of many areas. Cluster analysis of pooled data indicates a clear differentiation of chemotypes.

AB - Predicting yield is essential for producers, stakeholders and international interchange demand. The majority of the divergence in yield and essential oil content is associated with environmental aspects, including weather conditions, soil variety and cultivation techniques. Therefore, aniseed production was examined in this study. The categorical input variables for artificial neural network modelling were growing year (two successive growing years), growing locality (three different locations in Vojvodina Province, Serbia) and fertilization type (six different treatments). The output variables were morphological and quality parameters, with agricultural importance such as plant height, umbel diameter, number of umbels, number of seeds per umbel, 1000-seed weight, seed yield per plant, plant weight, harvest index, yield per ha, essential oil (EO) yield, germination energy, total germination, EO content, as well as the share of EOs compounds, including limonene, cis-dihydro carvone, methyl chavicol, carvone, cis-anethole, trans-anethole, β-elemene, α-himachalene, trans-β-farnesene, γ-himachalene, trans-muurola-4(14),5-diene, α-zingiberene, β-himachalene, β-bisabolene, trans-pseudoisoeugenyl 2-methylbutyrate and epoxy-pseudoisoeugenyl 2-methylbutyrate. The ANN model predicted agricultural parameters accurately, showing r2 values between 0.555 and 0.918, while r2 values for the forecasting of essential oil content were between 0.379 and 0.908. According to global sensitivity analysis, the fertilization type was a more influential variable to agricultural parameters, while the location site was more influential to essential oils content.

AB - Our previous research has proven that the immortelle (Helichrysum italicum) essential oil (EO) grown in Serbia possesses respectable biological potential and desirable composition of volatile compounds with the potential for a wide range of applications in the food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical industries. Within this study, the impact of seasonal variations (temperature, precipitation, and insolation) during three successive years (2017, 2018, and 2019), on the volatile profile of γ-curcumene + ar-curcumene immortelle chemotype was determined. Steam distillation was utilized to extract EO from the plant material, followed by chromatographic mass spectrometric analysis revealing 50 volatile compounds. A multiple linear regression model was developed, and principal component analyses were conducted to deliver detailed information regarding the prediction, component profile, and parallel contents of active compounds of the immortelle EO. Under Serbian agro-ecological conditions, with appropriate harvest method, immortelle can achieve two harvests per year: the first in July, and the second in August. The γ-curcumene + ar-curcumene chemotype usually occurs as the dominant chemotype in the region of the ex-Yugoslavia countries. This chemotype probably developed as an adaptation to climatic conditions, and spring and summer precipitation positively influenced curcumene accumulation in plants. Such a phenomenon was especially noticeable in the first harvest.

AB - Cigarette waste in the form of cigarette butts is one of the most common forms of waste in the world. It contains more than 5,000 toxic ingredients and chemicals that pose a serious risk to the health of wildlife, humans and marine and freshwater organisms. Billions of cigarettes are produced worldwide every year, resulting in the accumulation of tons of toxic waste. Depending on the environmental conditions and weather conditions, cellulose acetate filters can take up to 10 years to completely decompose, during which time heavy metals and toxic chemicals are constantly released into the environment. Although possible methods of disposing of collected cigarette butts include incineration and landfilling, techniques can result in the release of hazardous fumes and can be expensive. Treatment and recycling of cigarette butts and their conversion into different materials could be a potential solution to the resulting environmental pollution. Until the publication of this review, there are several studies and papers on cigarette recycling with encouraging results and a number of them have been studied methods, including recycling cigarette butts in asphalt concrete and baked brick, as a carbon source, sound-absorbing material, corrosion inhibitor, biofilm carrier and many others.
