AB - Research conducted in this dissertation mainly contributs to bettercomprehension of the overall picture of the interaction of the Ti6Al4V and laser light. The effects of lasers that operated in a wide range of wavelengths, from infrared toultraviolet, were explored and the influence of the wavelength on this interaction also. Itwas also possible to examine the influence of the length of the laser pulse characteristicsof the morphological changes. The aim was to investigate how the alloy surface can beprecisely modified by the laser pulses with of 10-9 and 10-12 seconds pulse duration, withcareful choice of irradiation conditions, such as energy density and number of appliedpulses.Effects of the laser action on the samples were mainly characterized by means ofoptical and electron microscopy, as well as contact and non - contact profilometry. The damage threshold of Ti6Al4V for laser radiation at wavelengths 222, 266,308, 532 and 1064 nm was determined. It was found that the fine changes in the alloycan be formed when the energy density of the incident radiation is of values close to thethreshold damage. Of particular interest was to examine the formation of periodicparallel structures, microscale and nanoscale dimensions, on the surface morphology.Investigations of these interactions contributed to a better understanding of the responseof Ti6Al4V alloy to single – pulse and multi – pulse exposure to laser radiation.

AB - The effect of potassium addition on the radial distribution of temperature and electron number density in a U-shaped direct current (dc) argon plasma operating at different arc currents has been studied by optical emission spectroscopic techniques and the power interruption method. Spatially resolved electron number densities (n(e)) have been determined from measured radial profiles of Balmer-H(beta) spectral line. The obtained electron number densities have been used for thermodynamic temperature (T(LTE)) evaluation with the assumption that the arc plasma is in a state of local thermodynamic equilibrium. The excitation temperatures (T(exc)) have been determined from the absolute integral emissivity of the argon line at 430.01 nm. For heavy particle temperature (T(h)) evaluations we have used a power interruption method. The obtained results have shown that an addition of KCl decreases both electron number density and temperature of the arc column. The magnitude of such an influence on plasma parameters increases with an increase in the KCl concentration and decreases with an increase in the arc current.

AB - A pulse-modulated direct-current argon arc burning at atmospheric pressure has been investigated by analyzing temporally and spatially resolved analyte emission responses in a millisecond time domain. The arc current was a rectangular pulse modulated between 9 and 3.5A with a modulation period of 250 ms and a low current interval of up to 50 ms. Both positive and negative step modulation in current strongly affected the analyte emission. Delayed responses of representative analytes with ionization energies ranging from 6.5 to 10 eV have been studied. Depending on the analyte ionization energy and the plasma zone observed, a sudden current change was in most cases followed by a line intensity increase. The magnitude of this increase is correlated with changes in the ionization-recombination balance, the extent of demixing and the gas dynamics processes invoked by a current modulation. For analytes with medium and low ionization energies a current drop is accompanied by a large increase in signal-to-background ratio, which opens up the possibility of the use of arc current modulation for sensitivity improvement.

AB - Surface modification of titanium based implant Ti6Al4V induced by an Nd:YAG laser operating at a wavelength of 266 nm, with pulses of 40 ps, is presented. It is shown that the laser beam at fluences 0.96J cm(-2) and 0.29J cm(-2) significantly modifies the alloy surface. The damage threshold is estimated at 0.12 J cm(-2). The irradiations at 0.96J cm-2 were accompanied by the occurrence of plasma. The characteristics of the damage are: (a) smoothed center of the damage area, (b) 20 nm cracks, (c) 200 nm parallel periodic surface structures (PSS). The periodicity of the PSS corresponds to the laser wavelength. Such modifications of the Ti6Al4V implant surface are applicable to medical practice. Surface morphology of the implant was monitored by optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled to an energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analyzer. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. AB - Interaction of pulsed femtosecond Ti:sapphire laser (160 fs), operating at high repetition rate (75 MHz) at 800 nm, with nickel-based superalloy Inconel 600 and tungsten-titanium (WTi) target was studied. The WTi target was in form of thin film deposited on silicon substrate. Low laser fluence of maximum 50 mJ/cm(2) had modified the target surface during irradiation/exposure time of seconds or minutes. The radiation absorbed from the laser beam generates at the surface a series of effects, such as direct material vaporization, formation of clusters, etc. Morphological features of the targets can be summarized as: (a) intensive removal of material and crater appearance; (b) creation of nanostructures; (c) microcracking, etc. Ablation of Inconel 600 surface is effective, resulting in formation of holes with small diameter ( LT = 10 mu m) and relatively large depth ( LT = 50 mu m). In case of WTi target/thin film, the surrounding rim is not so expressed, and crater depths are lower. It can be concluded that the average laser power of the order of watts, pulse energies of the order of nanojoules and high repetition rates (MHz range) can successfully modify metallic materials.

AB - Interaction of a Nd:YAG laser, operating at wavelengths of 1064 nm (23.6 J cm(-2) fluence) or 532 nm (25.9 J cm(-2) fluence), and pulse duration of 40 ps, with a titanium-based medical implant Ti6A14V alloy was studied. Surface at laser wavelengths 1064 nm and 532 rim, damage thresholds were estimated to be 0.9 J cm(-2) and 0.25 J cm(-2) respectively. At both laser wavelengths, the energy absorbed was mostly converted into thermal energy, forming craters, albeit about 50 times deeper at 1064 run than at 532 run. Periodic surface structures (PSS) were also formed with both laser wavelengths, concentric, and radial at micrometer scale (3 mu m to 15 mu m period), parallel at nanometer scale (800 nm period with the 1064 nm laser, 400 nm with The 532 nm laser). In the case of the 532 nm laser, the concentric Structures enlarge their period with accumulating laser pulse count. These features can help roughening of the implant surface and improve bio-compatibility.

AB - Interaction of Nd:YAG laser, operating at 266 nm wavelength and a pulse duration of 40 ps, with AISI 1045 steel was studied. Surface damage threshold was estimated to be 0.14 J/cm(2). The steel surface modi. cation was studied at the laser fluence of similar to 1.0 J/cm(2). The energy absorbed from Nd: YAG laser beam is partially converted to thermal energy, which generates a series of effects, such as melting, vaporization of the molten material, shock waves, etc. The following AISI 1045 steel surface morphological changes and processes were observed: (i) intensive damage of the target in the central zone of irradiated area; (ii) appearance of periodic surface structures at nano-level, with periodicity in agreement with the used wavelength; (iii) reduction of oxygen concentration in irradiated area; and (iv) development of plasma in front of the target. Generally, interaction of laser beam with AISI 1045 steel (at 266 nm) results in a near-instantaneous creation of damage, meaning that large steel surfaces can be modified in short times. AB - Interaction of an Nd:YAG laser, operating at 532 nm wavelength and pulse duration of 40 ps, with tungsten-titanium (WTi) thin film (thickness, 190 nm) deposited on single silicon (100) substrate was studied. Laser fluences of 10.5 and 13.4 J/cm(2) were found to be sufficient for modification of the WTi/silicon target system. The energy absorbed from the Nd:YAG laser beam is partially converted to thermal energy, which generates a series of effects, such as melting, vaporization of the molten material, shock waves, etc. The following WTi/silicon surface morphological changes were observed: (i) ablation of the thin film during the first laser pulse. The boundary of damage area was relatively sharp after action of one pulse whereas it was quite diffuse after irradiation with more than 10 pulses; (ii) appearance of some nano-structures (e.g., nano-ripples) in the irradiated region; (iii) appearance of the micro-cracking. The process of the laser interaction with WTi/silicon target was accompanied by formation of plasma.

AB - A multilayered TiAlN/TiN coating deposited on H11 work-steel was irradiated by a TEA CO(2) laser (ns pulses) and a Nd:YAG laser (ps pulses), and the effects compared. The coating was 2.17 mu m thick and consisted of 45 layers. The laser-induced modifications showed dependence on laser pulse duration, pulse count and laser wavelength. The conditions for coating ablation in both cases were determined. The experiment has revealed laser-induced periodic surface structures (LPSS) on nanometre and micrometre scales, depending on the laser wavelength used. Sample surfaces were characterized before and after laser irradiation by an optical microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), focused ion beam (FIB) microscope and profilometry.

AB - Spatial distribution of delayed responses of argon and hydrogen spectral line and continuum intensity to square power modulation was investigated in order to get better insight into the processes occurring in argon dc arc plasma. The power was abruptly changed between stationary values, 9 and 3.5 A. For these currents steady state radial distributions of electron number density, temperature and emission intensity were measured. On part of the discharge radial profiles the power drop and the power jump are both accompanied by intensity peaks which may be explained by displacement of the arc core axis and change in the arc core diameter during the power modulation.

AB - A current square modulation technique is used to investigate radial asymmetry of plasma column of argon stabilized direct current U-shaped arc. By monitoring the temporal behavior of spectral line intensities (in a millisecond domain) for various elements, it was observed that nonhomogeneous emission was much more pronounced for current modulated arc plasma compared to the stationary regime plasma. The reason for such behavior, for this as well as for other arc sources, lies in a mode the stream of argon with aerosol is introduced into the arc plasma.

AB - In this paper the possibility of extracting metals: K, Al, Ca, Mg, Fe, Cu, Ba, Zn, Mn and Sr, from Cetraria islandica lichen with solutions simulating acid rain (H2SO4- HNO3-(NH4)2SO4), pH 2.00 (1) and 3.28 (2) has been investigated. The results obtained suggest that the investigated elements can be classified into ones where the highest percentage was extracted with the first extraction (K, Al, Mg, Ba, Zn and Mn) and others where the extraction percentage is relatively uniform (Ca and Fe). This indicated different bonding methods in lichen that is in accordance with literature data where two cation bonding methods in lichen were shown.

AB - Interactions of a TEA CO2 laser, 100 ns pulse, with titanium nitride (TiN) coating deposited on AISI D2 steel, were studied. The energy absorbed from the laser beam is partially converted to thermal energy, which generates a series of effects such as melting, vaporization of the molten material, shock waves, etc. Morphological modifications of the titanium nitride surface can be summarized as follows: (i) ablation of the TiN coating in the central zone of the irradiated area with creation of grainy and cracked features, (ii) appearance of a hydrodynamic structure like resolidified droplets of the material in the periphery region. The process of sample irradiation was accompanied by the appearance of plasma. Color modifications of the sample, upon laser irradiation, indicate possible chemical changes like oxidation.
