AB - Titania based catalyst and TiO2 doped with zirconia were prepared by modified sol-gel method. The synthesized catalysts samples were characterized by BET, XRD, SEM and FTIR techniques. Photocatalytic activity was tested in the reaction of crystal violet (CV) dye decolorization/decomposition under UV light irradiation. The effect of several operational parameters, such as catalyst dosage, initial dye concentrations, duration of UV irradiation treatment and number of reaction cycles were also considered. The obtained results indicated faster dye decolorization with the increase of the catalyst amount and a decrease of initial CV concentrations. An influence of doping with zirconia on the physico-chemical properties of bare titania was studied. The doping procedure had affected photocatalytic properties of the final catalytic material, and had improved photocatalytic performances of doped catalyst on crystal violet decolorization/degradation in comparison to bare titania.

AB - In this study, modified sol-gel method was employed to synthesize the pure and Zr-doped titania catalysts. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method was applied to determine porosity, X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was used to study crystal structure, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to investigate morphology and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to examine surface properties/total acidity of the obtained catalysts samples. Photocatalytic activity was tested in the reaction of crystal violet (CV) dye decolourization/degradation under UV light irradiation. The effects of several photocatalysis operational parameters were considered, such as catalyst dosage, initial dye concentrations, duration of UV irradiation treatment, as well as catalysts calcination temperatures and dopant amounts. The obtained results indicated faster dye decolourization/degradation with the increase of the catalyst dosage and the decrease of initial CV concentrations. The Zr-doping affects photocatalytic properties, i.e. CV decolourization/degradation of the prepared catalytic materials. Thus, addition of 5 wt.% of ZrO2 to titania increases photocatalytic effect for similar to 15% and addition of 10 wt.% of ZrO2 improves the photocatalytic efficiency of titania for nearly 30%.

AB - Callistemon citrinus (Myrtaceae) is a shrub native to Australia. Its flowers have been used as indigenous food among the aboriginal Australians. Numerous diseases, such as bacterial, fungal, viral and parasite infections have traditionally been treated with this plant. Gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analyses of the flower and leaf extracts of C citrinus revealed the presence of a major constituent, a phloroglucinol, dihydroxy-4-methoxyphenyl)-3-methylbutan-1-one (1) (up to 382.2 mg per 1 g of the flower extracts). Compound 1 was for the first time identified in this genus. This phloroglucinol exhibited potent antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, this compound displayed strong in vitro antioxidant activity which could be easily connected with both anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive effects. Thus, compound 1, as a plant constituent present in the diet of Aboriginal people, that helps with inflammation and pain, could have given them a better chance of survival in harsh conditions of the environment. AB - Thermal behavior of structurally similar 4-arylamino-3-nitrocoumarin derivatives substituted with different electron-donor and electron-acceptor substituents on the aryl side group was investigated. The thermal stability of these compounds was studied by non-isothermal thermo-gravimetric analysis, differential thermo-gravimetry, differential thermal analysis, and pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The thermal degradation of the three synthesized 4-arylamino-3-nitrocoumarins, possessing an iodine atom, a nitro or a methyl group, proceeds in three steps. The thermal stability of the coumarin derivative with the electron-donating methyl substituent is lower than that of the compounds with the electron-accepting nitro group or iodine atom. This least stable compound (4-[(4-methylphenyl)amino]-3-nitro-2H-chromen-2-one) was also characterized with the greatest loss in mass that accompanied the degradation, and all of the three degradation steps of this compound began at the lowest temperature in comparison to the other two.

AB - Herein, we report on the synthesis, spectral, crystallographic and electrochemical properties of a small library of N-substituted 2-ferrocenyl-1,3-thiazolidin-4-ones, designed as novel GABA(A) benzodiazepine-binding site ligands. The anxiolytic properties of the title compounds were evaluated in several different in vivo models, whereas the involvement of the GABAA receptor complex in the activity of the most potent compound, 2-ferrocenyl-3-(4-methoxyphenylethyl)-1,3-thiazolidin-4-one, was inferred from experiments with known GABA(A)-targeting agents. Ligand docking experiments revealed that the high, dose-dependent, anxiolytic activity of the new compounds might be due to their favorable interactions with the benzodiazepine-binding site of the GABA(A) receptor complex. The incorporation of the ferrocene core and fine tuning of the distance between the thiazolidinone core and an additional aromatic ring were judged to be crucial structural requirements for the observed anxiolytic effect. AB - Homogeneous and crack-free TiO2 films with templated mesoporosity were prepared by the dip coating technique using an evaporation-induced, self-assembly method. The synthesized mesoporous TiO2 films were characterized using SEM/TEM, BET and XRD techniques. Degradation reactions of methylene blue and crystal violet dyes were used to test the photocatalytic capability of mesoporous TiO2 films. The degradation kinetics of methylene blue and crystal violet were investigated over a broad range of initial concentrations of the organic dyes. The kinetic data were correlated with the specific surface area and thickness of mesoporous TiO2 films, as well as number of reaction cycles. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - A library of 16 2-substituted methyl acetoacetates containing ferrocenyl or phenyl units was designed to disclose differences in the antimicrobial activity of ferrocene-containing compounds and their phenyl analogs. Two methyl acetoacetates, whose structures do not contain an aromatic nucleus, were also included in order to probe the inherent activity of the scaffold itself. The acetoacetates were synthesized (low-to-good yields) and fully characterized by spectral (MS, IR, UV-Vis, 1D and 2D NMR) and electrochemical (cyclic voltammetry) techniques. Single-crystal X-ray analysis has been performed for methyl 2-acetyl-2-(ferrocenylmethyl)-5-methylhex-4-enoate. All compounds have demonstrated in vitro antimicrobial activity against six bacterial (three Gram-positive and three Gram-negative) and two fungal strains with minimal inhibitory concentration values of 0.0050-20.6 . The most active compound was 2-acetyl-2-(ferrocenylmethyl)-4-methylpent-4-enoate whose activity was comparable to that of nystatin against the yeast Candida albicans. Agglomerative hierarchical clustering statistical analysis of the antimicrobial assay data demonstrated that ferrocene-containing compounds have statistically different and greater antimicrobial activity when compared to their phenyl analogs.

AB - Zirconia-based catalysts were promoted by acid functions (sulfate and phosphate anions) and tested in order to establish catalyst efficiency in test reaction of n-hexane isomerization. The impact of surface and structural properties on the final catalytic performance is also investigated. It is proven that well-established balance between total catalyst acidity, acidic surface density and crystal phase nano-structure determines the catalytic activity in the reaction towards isomerized products. Type of acidic promoter strongly affects the resulted catalytic act. This stands for pyrosylfate groups in sulfated zirconia catalysts and orthophosphate groups in phosphated zirconia catalysts both essential in the favorable reaction run.

AB - The quality of a straight-run fuel oil can be improved if saturated n-hydrocarbons of low octane number are converted to their branched counterparts. Poor reactivity of traditional catalysts in isomerization reactions imposed the need for the development of new catalysts among which noble metal promoted acid catalysts, liquid and/or solid acid catalysts take a prominent place. Sulfated zirconia and metal promoted sulfated zirconia exhibit high activity for the isomerization of light alkanes at low temperatures. The present paper highlights the original results which indicate that the modification of sulfated zirconia by incorporation of metals (platinum and rhenium) significantly affects catalytic performances in n-hydrocarbon conversion reactions. Favourable activity/selectivity of the promoted sulfated zirconia depends on the crystal phase composition, critical crystallites sizes, platinum dispersion, total acidity and type of acidity. Attention is also paid to the recently developed solid acid catalysts used in other conversion reactions of hydrocarbons.

AB - Ferula ovina (Boiss.) Boiss. is a traditional Iranian flavoring agent used as an ingredient of spices and condiments. Methods and results: GC-MS analyses of F. ovina aerial parts essential oil revealed the presence of a number of rare aromatic esters of monoterpenic alcohols. The structures of these esters were corroborated by synthesis, and one of them, bornyl 4-methoxybenzoate, turned out to be a new natural compound. The antinociceptive activities of the oil and the new ester were assessed in mice using several different laboratory models. The oil exerted strong peripheral and moderate central analgesic activities. Surprisingly, mice treated with bornyl 4-methoxybenzoate had an increased sensitivity to the noxious stimulus compared to that of the control group. A dynamic hot plate test was used to demonstrate that bornyl 4-methoxybenzoate induces hyperalgesia and not allodynia. Conclusion: Essential oil constituents impart this spice with both antinociceptive and hyperalgesic potentially flavor-related properties.
