Pulsed TEA CO2 Laser Irradiation of Titanium in Nitrogen and Carbon Dioxide Gases

AB - Surface changes created by interaction of transversely excited atmospheric carbon dioxide (TEA CO2) laser with titanium target/implant in nitrogen and carbon dioxide gas were studied. TEA CO2 laser operated at 10.6 mu m, pulse length of 100 ns and fluence of similar to 17 J/cm(2) which was sufficient for inducing surface modifications. Induced changes depend on the gas used. In both gases the grain structure was produced (central irradiated zone) but its forms were diverse, (N-2: irregular shape; CO2: hill-like forms). Hydrodynamic features at peripheral zone, like resolidified droplets, were recorded only in CO2 gas. Elemental analysis of the titanium target surface indicated that under a nitrogen atmosphere surface nitridation occurred. In addition, irradiation in both gases was followed by appearance of plasma in front of the target. The existence of plasma indicates relatively high temperatures created above the target surface offering a sterilizing effect.

AB - As optical fibres are used ever more extensively in space applications, nuclear industry, medicine and high-energy physics experiments, it has become essential to investigate the influence of ionizing radiation on their characteristics. In this work, the radiation-induced attenuation at 530 nm is investigated experimentally in step-index multimode polymethyl-methacrylate plastic optical fibres exposed to low dose-rate gamma radiation. Cumulative doses ranged from 50 Gy to 500 Gy. The radiation induced attenuation has been empirically found to obey the power law RIA = aD(b), where D is the total radiation dose and a and b are the constants determined by fitting.

AB - In this work, we present the experimental study of the radiation-induced attenuation in step-index polymethyl-methacrylate based plastic optical fibre by exposure to low dose rate ionizing radiation. The low dose exposure has been found to induce significant permanent attenuation in plastic optical fibres. Based on the experimental results, the formula between radiation-induced attenuation and radiation dose is obtained accordingly. The recovery properties of plastic optical fibre also were investigated. The fibre begins to recover immediately after irradiation, but it does not fully recover, i.e. the irradiation leads to permanent damage of polymer. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - N-type thin film transistors (TFTs) fabricated with fluorinated and hydrogenated polysilicon were exposed to gamma radiation to a cumulative dose up to 1200 Gy(Si). During irradiation, the gate electrode was biased with a positive voltage up to 4.8 V. The effect of irradiation on the electrical characteristics of the devices was monitored after the irradiation steps and in a prolonged period after irradiation. The main monitoring parameter was the threshold voltage which was found to have linear dependence on irradiation dose. This, together with obtained low fading, suggests that thin transistors have potential as radiation dosimeters.

AB - The timescale for emission of three fragments (Z GT = 8) in the 12.7 GeV He-4+U-238 reaction has been studied using a sandwich configuration of the Makrofol polycarbonate track detector. In events with varying multiplicity of heavy fragments (Z GT 20), the differences of the correlation functions for relative angle and relative velocity between pairs of fragments have been studied in order to determine the fragment emission timescale. A sequential decay mechanism for the excited residual nuclei was found to be consistent with experimental data. It was determined that the fragment emission time decreased with decreasing multiplicity of heavy fragments from 1200 +/- 80 fm c(-1) for events with two heavy fragments to 400 +/- 50 fm c(-1) for events with one heavy fragment.

AB - The process of mass transfer is investigated occurring during the first of two steps of the 17.0-MeV/u Xe-132 + U-238 heavy-ion reaction. Mass of the projectile-like nucleus after the first reaction step has been determined by the Fokker-Planck equation. Results have been compared with previously reported measurements.
