AB - We have studied Ho-doped BiFeO3 nanopowders (Bi1-xHoxFeO3, x = 0-0.15), prepared via sol-gel method, in order to analyse the effect of substitution-driven structural transition on dielectric and ferroelectric properties of bismuth ferrite. X-ray diffraction and Raman study demonstrated that an increased Ho concentration (x GT = 0.1) has induced gradual phase transition from rhombohedral to orthorhombic phase. The frequency dependent permittivity of Bi1-xHoxFeO3 nanopowders was analysed within a model which incorporates Debye-like dielectric response and dc and ac conductivity contributions based on universal dielectric response. It was shown that influence of leakage current and grain boundary/interface effects on dielectric and ferroelectric properties was substantially reduced in biphasic Bi1-xHoxFeO3 (x GT 0.1) samples. The electrical performance of Bi0.85Ho0.15FeO3 sample, for which orthorhombic phase prevailed, was significantly improved and Bi0.85Ho0.15FeO3 has sustained strong applied electric fields (up to 100 kV/cm) without breakdown. Under strong external fields, the polarization exhibited strong frequency dependence. The low-frequency remnant polarization and coercive field of Bi0.85Ho0.15FeO3 were significantly enhanced. It was proposed that defect dipolar polarization substantially contributed to the intrinsic polarization of Bi0.85Ho0.15FeO3 under strong electric fields at low frequencies.

AB - Nanosized Mg-doped ceria powders were obtained by self-propagating room temperature reaction without using surfactants or templates. X-ray diffraction analysis and field emission scanning microscopy results showed that the doped samples are solid solutions with fluorite-type structure and spherical morphology. Raman spectra revealed an increase in the amount of oxygen vacancies with the increase of Mg concentration. This increasing results in a narrowing of the bandgap of CeO2. The photocatalytic performances of the Mg-doped ceria solid solutions were evaluated by decomposing an organic dye, crystal violet under UV irradiation. The Mg-doped ceria solid solutions exhibit significantly better photocatalytic activity than the pure CeO2 and commercial TiO2. The higher first rate constant of the Mg-doped samples demonstrated that they are much more efficient than TiO2 and CeO2 under UV light. Mg2+ dopant ions and oxygen vacancies play a significant role in the enhancement of photocatalytic performances of the Mg-doped ceria.

AB - Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanopowders were produced by sol-gel technique from tetrabutyl titanate as a precursor by varying some parameters of the sol-gel synthesis, such as temperature (500 and 550 degrees C) and the duration of calcination (1.5, 2 and 2.5 h). X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) results have shown that all synthesized nanopowders were dominantly in the anatase phase, with the presence of a small amount of rutile in samples calcined at 550 degrees C. According to the results obtained by the Williamson-Hall method, the anatase crystallite size was increased with the duration of the calcination (from 24 to 29 nm in samples calcined at lower temperature, and from 30 to 35 nm in samples calcined at higher temperature). The analysis of the shift and line-width of the most intensive anatase Eg Raman mode confirmed the XRPD results. The analysis of pore structure from nitrogen sorption experimental data described all samples as mesoporous, with mean pore diameters in the range of 5-8 nm. Nanopowder properties have been related to the photocatalytic activity, tested in degradation of the textile dye (C.I. Reactive Orange 16), car-bofuran ray scattering.

AB - WO3/TiO2 and TiO2 coatings were prepared on titania substrates using facile and cost-effective plasma electrolytic oxidation process. The coatings were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Raman, UV vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. With increasing duration of PEO process, the monoclinic WO3 phase became dominant and new monoclinic WO2.95 phase appeared. The optical absorption edge in the WO3/TiO2 samples, enriched with WO3/WO2.96 phase, was shifted to the visible region. The photocatalytic efficiency of WO3/TiO2 and pure TiO2 samples was evaluated by performing the photodegradation experiments in an aqueous solution of Rhodamine 6G and Mordant Blue 9 under the visible and UV light. The WO3/TiO2 catalysts are much more efficient than pure TiO2 under visible light and slightly better under UV light. The improvement of photocatalytic activity in the visible region is attributed to better light absorption, higher adsorption affinity and increased charge separation efficiency. AB - Two series of nanocrystalline brookite-type powders have been synthesized by using combined sal gel hydrothermal method with titanium tetrachloride (TiCI4) as a precursor and hydrothermal temperature and reaction time varied in the range of 120-200 degrees C and 12-48 h, respectively. The effects of chosen synthesis parameters on structural, morphological and optical properties of synthesized powders have been investigated by the XRPD, SEM, EDS and BET measurements, as well Raman spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry. The XRPD results have shown that pure brookite phase, with mean crystallite size of -33 nm, has been obtained only in the sample synthesized at 200 degrees C, after 24 h of hydrothermal process. In all other samples anatase phase also appears, whereas rutile and sodium titanate phases have been noticed in the samples synthesized at lower temperatures. The presence of different titania phases has also been confirmed and analyzed by Raman scattering measurements. The SEM measurements have shown spindle-like particles in brookite-rich samples synthesized at 200 degrees C, whereas BET measurements have detected mesoporous structure in these samples. The properties of synthesized powders have been correlated to their photocatalytic efficiency, tested in degradation of alprazolam, one of the 5th generation benzodiazepines. The sample consisted of pure brookite has shown the highest efficiency in the photodegradation of alprazolam, practically equal to the activity of Degussa P25. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. abstract = "Two series of nanocrystalline brookite-type powders have been synthesized by using combined sal gel hydrothermal method with titanium tetrachloride (TiCI4) as a precursor and hydrothermal temperature and reaction time varied in the range of 120-200 degrees C and 12-48 h, respectively. AB - Plasmon-longitudinal-optical (LO) phonon interaction in pure and Nd-doped CeO2-y nanocrystals was investigated by measuring far-infrared reflectivity spectra in the 100-700 cm(-1) spectral range at room temperature. Analysis of the obtained results revealed that the presence of free charge carriers becomes significant with the particle size decrease to nanometer range and increase of lattice defects. The free charge carriers were found to be responsible for a plasmon mode which coupled strongly with two LO phonon modes of ceria. The presence of more pronounced low-frequency Drude tail and the screening of the phonon modes in Nd-doped CeO2-y nanocrystals implied that the Plasmon-LO phonon interaction increased with doping. Factorized and additive dielectric function models were applied to deduce about the coupled and decoupled LO phonon frequencies and the structure of the decoupled plasmon mode in pure and Nd-doped CeO2-y nanocrystals. These models were combined with Bruggeman effective medium approximation in order to properly describe the influence of porosity on the infrared reflectivity spectra. With increasing dopant content, the decoupled plasmon mode exhibited redshift and damping decrease implying that doping induced semiconductor-to-metalic state transition took place.

AB - Y-doped HfO2 nanopowders, produced by metathesis synthesis, exhibit ferromagnetism at room temperature. The X-ray diffraction and Raman measurements have shown that HfO2 nanopowders undergo phase transformation from monoclinic to tetragonal and cubic phase with increasing of Y content. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman analysis gave evidence that Y-doped HfO2 nanopowders are oxygen deficient. The ferromagnetic properties of Y-doped HfO2 nanocrystals are dependent on crystal structure changes. The structural transformation from monoclinic to tetragonal phase with Y doping is followed by increased ferromagnetic ordering because of the increased concentration of oxygen vacancies (V-O) in different charge states. Higher Y content favors the formation of cubic phase and the ferromagnetism significantly weakens. In cubic hafnia phase, yttrium can form (V-O-Y-Hf) defect complexes in different charge states. The appearance of these complexes can be responsible for the degradation of ferromagnetic ordering. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

AB - Ultrafine CeO2-delta nanopowder, prepared by a simple and cost-effective self-propagating room temperature synthesis method (SPRT), showed high adsorption capability for removal of different azo dyes. Batch type of adsorption experiments with fixed initial pH value were conducted for the removal of Reactive Orange 16 (RO16), Methyl Orange (MO), and Mordant Blue 9 (MB9). The equilibrium adsorption data were evaluated using Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models. The Langmuir model slightly better describes isotherm data for RO16 and MO, whereas the Freundlich model was found to best fit the isotherm data for MB9 over the whole concentration range. The maximum adsorption capacities, determined from isotherm data for MO, MB9, and RO16 were 113, 101, and 91 mg g(1) respectively. The adsorption process follows the pseudo-second-order kinetic model indicating the coexistence of chemisorption and physisorption. The mechanism of azo dye adsorption is also discussed.

AB - The influence of La-doping in the range of 0.5-6.0 mol% on structural and morphological properties of TiO2 nanopowders synthesized by sol-gel routine has been investigated by XRPD, AFM, EDS and BET measurements, as well as Raman spectroscopy. The XRPD and Raman measurements have revealed the anatase phase as dominant in all nanopowders, with crystallite size decreasing from similar to 15 nm in pure TiO2 to similar to 12 nm in La-doped samples. The BET data suggest that all samples are fully mesoporous, with mean pore diameters in the range of similar to 6-8 nm. The specific surface area and the complexity of pore structure are greater in doped samples than in pure TiO2 sample. The spectroscopic ellipsometry has apparently shown that the band gap has been gradually increased with the increase of La content. The STM and STS techniques have been used successfully to evaluate the surface morphology and electronic properties of La-doped nanopowders. All investigated properties have been related to photocatalytic activity, tested in degradation of a metoprolol tartrate salt (0.05 mM), and induced by UV-radiation. All doped samples showed increased photocatalytic activity compared to pure TiO2, among which the 0.65 mol% La-doped sample appeared to be the most efficient. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. AB - Pure and La3+ doped titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanopowders were obtained by sol gel and hydrothermal methods. A precursor was titanium tetrachloride and concentrations of dopants were 0.5 and 1.0 mol%. Procedures of both methods were the same, up to the last part of synthesis (the transformation from the mother liquor to oxide nanopowders), in order to find the influence of applied methods on the properties of nanopowders. XRD results have shown that all synthesized nanopowders were in the anatase phase. It was seen from DSC measurements that anatase to rutile phase transition took place at a higher temperature with a higher concentration of dopant (La3+). The samples obtained by the sol gel method had a higher temperature of phase transition than related samples obtained by the hydrothermal method. Nanopowder properties have been related to the photocatalytic activity, tested in degradation of the pharmaceutical alprazolam. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

AB - Synthesis process strongly influences the nanocrystalline CeO2-y defective structure. The presence of surface defects, in the form of oxygen vacancies in different charge states (F centers), can change the electronic properties of ceria nanocrystals. Nanocrystalline CeO2-y samples were synthesized using three different methods (precipitation, self-propagating room temperature, and hydrothermal synthesis). Raman spectroscopy was used to identify the presence of oxygen vacancies which presumably were formed at the nanoparticle surface. The defect concentration depended on the crystallite size of differently prepared CeO2-y samples. Scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and ellipsometry were employed to investigate the electronic band structure of defective CeO2-y nanocrystals. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements demonstrated that inside the band gap of CeO2-y nanocrystals, besides the filled 4 f states, appeared additional states which were related to occupied and empty F center defect states. From the ellipsometric measurements, using the critical points model, the energy positions of different F centers states and the values of the reduced band gap energies were determined. The analysis of obtained data pointed out that depending on the synthesis method, different types of F centers (F+ and F-0) can be formed in the CeO2-y nanocrystals. The formation of different F center defect states inside the ceria gap have a strong impact on the electrical, optical, and magnetic properties of ceria nanocrystals. (C) 2014 AIP Publishing LLC.

AB - The structural and morphological properties of mesoporous anatase nanopowders, synthesized by sol-gel method, have been modified by varying the duration of calcination, in order to obtain more efficient photocatalyst than Degussa P25 in the degradation of relatively large pollutant molecules ( GT 1 nm in size). According to X-ray diffraction analysis, the crystallite size was increased from 13 to 17.5 nm with the increase of calcination time from 1 to 7 h. The analysis of nitrogen sorption experimental data revealed that all samples were mesoporous, with a mean pore diameters in the range of similar to 5-9 nm. The corrugated pore structure model was employed to evaluate pore structure tortuosity. Nanopowder properties have been related to the photocatalytic activity, tested in the degradation of metoprolol tartrate salt, selective beta(1)-blocker used in a variety of cardiovascular diseases, with molecular size of 0.610 nm x 1.347 nm. The study has demonstrated that samples calcined for 4 and 5 h have displayed higher photocatalytic performance than Degussa P25, whereas the sample calcined for 3 h has shown comparable activity. AB - The paper addresses the issue of health risk associated with the presence of chrysotile in the soil type ranker formed on massive serpentines occurring in the area of Bubanj Potok, a settlement located in the southern Belgrade environs, Serbia. Characterization of the ranker soil was conducted by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, micro-Raman spectroscopy and transmission Fe-57 Mossbauer spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscopy figures showed regular shaped smectite (montmorillonite) particles, aggregates of chlorite, and elongated sheets of serpentines minerals antigorite. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the presence of detrital mineral quartz polymorph as well as minor amounts of other mineral species. Micro-Raman spectroscopy identified the presence of dominant minerals, such as montmorillonite, kaolinite, muscovite, gypsum, calcite, albite, amphiboles (hornblende/kaersutite) and orthoclase. Important polymorph silica modifications of quartz, olivine (forsterite), pyroxene (enstatite/ferrosilite, diopside/hedenbergite), and serpentine (antigorite/lizardite/chrysotile) were identified.

AB - Ce1-xPrxO2-delta (0 LT = x LT = 0.4) nanocrystals were synthesized by self-propagating method and thoroughly characterized using X-ray diffraction, Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and magnetic measurements. Undoped CeO2 nanocrystals exhibited intrinsic ferromagnetism at room temperature. Despite the increased concentration of oxygen vacancies in doped samples, our results showed that ferromagnetic ordering rapidly degrades with Pr doping. The suppression of ferromagnetism can be explained in terms of the different dopant valence state, the different nature of the vacancies formed in Pr-doped samples and their ability/disability to establish the ferromagnetic ordering.

AB - Nanocrystalline ceria (CeO2) is known for its ionic conductivity and oxygen storage properties, which depend on the presence of oxygen ion vacancies. The vacancies cause several important changes in CeO2 involving microstrain, electronic structure, magnetic properties, etc. In this article, we focus our attention to the microstructural changes of nanocrystalline CeO2-x annealed at different temperatures in the range 200500 degrees C. Structural and vibrational properties were investigated by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. It was observed that the content of oxygen vacancies changed significantly with increasing annealing temperature, which plays an important role in the observed microstructural changes of the annealed samples. We demonstrate that the observed microstrain changes, because of variable defect content, dominate over the crystallite size effect. This finding is opposite to the conclusions made by several other authors. A new mode, classified as a probable surface mode, was observed in the Raman spectra at similar to 480 cm(1), the appearance of which can be explained by the large defective structure and disorder in the ceria lattice. AB - Nanocrystalline titanium dioxide (TiO2) powders have been synthesized by sol-gel method using titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) or tetrabutyl titanate (Ti(OC4H9)(4) as precursors, different alcohols and calcination temperatures in the range from 400 to 650 A degrees C. The photocatalytic activity of as-prepared powders has been tested for the degradation of metoprolol tartrate salt, a selective beta-blocker used to treat a variety of cardiovascular diseases, and compared to photocatalytic activity obtained from Degussa P25. Nanosized TiO2 powders prepared from TiCl4 and amyl-alcohol, calcined at 550 A degrees C, displayed an activity comparable to Degussa P25, whereas the sample from the same series, calcined at 650 A degrees C, showed higher photocatalytic activity in the whole range of the catalyst loading. Structural, morphological and surface properties of synthesized TiO2 nanopowders have been investigated by XRD, SEM, EDS and BET measurements, as well as FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, in order to find out the material properties which enable rapid an efficient decomposition of metoprolol under UV radiation.

AB - Ultrafine porous cerium dioxide nanopowders were synthesized by relatively new and cost-effective hydrothermal method varying the main synthesis parameters, temperature of calcination and type of basic solution. Characterization of the as-produced powders was performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman scattering and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method. This study reveals that difference in synthesis parameters has strong influence on the particle size, surface area, and pore size distribution enabling the more precise control of material properties very important for catalytic and nanosensor applications.
