AB  - The need for stable, chemical resistant and conductive materials is on the rise in recent times. Graphene shows promising electrical conductivity and chemical stability, but the production of a continual, conductive layer is limited and expensive. Silver nanowires (AgNWs) are both conducive and economically viable, but they are sensitive to water and oxygen. In this study, graphene oxide (GO) and AgNWs were synthesized and combined in different mass ratios (3:1, 2.5:1.5, and 1:1) to obtain chemically stable composites with improved electrical properties. Composites were reduced using ascorbic acid. With the increase of AgNWs to GO mass ratio, the surface of the free-standing composite film improved: the root mean square roughness was lowered from 376 nm for GO to 168 nm for the composite with the mass ratio of GO:AgNWs 1:1, while the sheet resistance was lowered from 146 × 106 Ω/□ to 4 Ω/□. For the first time, the effects of gamma irradiation on the structure of the composites were studied. Doses of 15, 25, and 35 kGy were applied.

AB  - In the present paper, we discuss implementation details of a free and open-source numerical solver based on the finite volume method for numerical simulation of viscoplastic non-Newtonian fluids. In addition to the fact that they are involved in many industrial applications, both their physical properties and their rheological behavior make them challenging for numerical simulation. Viscoplastic fluids are known to behave as solid unless the shear stress reaches a critical level, known as yield-stress, beyond which they behave as liquid. In most cases, both yielded and unyielded regions coexist in the fluid domain. In mathematical model of viscoplastic fluid, the constitutive equation is a non-differentiable function. This is often overcome by using the approximate constitutive equation that has a regularized form, e.g. the Papanastasiou regularization model. Using the same approach, we assess the influence of regularization parameters on simulation convergence and results accuracy. In this study, we give implementation details of viscoplastic fluid models in freeCappuccino open-source Computational Fluid Dynamics code. Moreover, we perform validation on several well known benchmark cases and compare proposed approach with those existing in published literature. We also perform a parametric analysis and show the effect of Reynolds and Bingham numbers on the extent of the yielded regions. Conclusions of the study have relevance in practical application of computational fluid dynamics to viscoplastic fluids in particular and to non-Newtonian fluids in general. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

AB  - Pyrolytic tire (PT) chars were first produced from waste car tires (WCT) through carbonization process at 800 °C, for different retention times. Then, best PT-char sample by its physicochemical properties (WCT 800(1 h)) was further tested for its ability to adsorb Rhodamine B (RhB) dye from aqueous solutions. Structural characterization of synthesized material showed existence of graphene-based material, with average pore diameter of 22.8 nm and specific surface area of 55.8 m2·g−1. Obtained carbon material meets specifications of commercial carbon black (CB). The yield of 33.6% of CB recovered has been achieved. Under the optimal conditions, 99.57% of RhB was removed. Adsorption of RhB obeys pseudo second-order model and Langmuir isotherm model. DFT (the density functional theory) was revealed that effective bonding of RhB onto WCT 800 originates from π-electron interactions with aromatic moieties and chemical (or at least the electrostatic) interactions, between positive nitrogen and electron-rich surface groups.

AB  - The analytical potential of LIBS for the analysis of liquid solutions was evaluated using two experimental setups, one based on a TEA CO2 laser and the other in which Nd:YAG laser was used. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) was used as a substrate on which a 10 μL drop of analyte solutions with different concentrations of analyte elements, Be, Cr, Ni, Co, Pb, Tl, and V, were deposited and dried. The samples were deposited either directly on the PTFE or over the pre-deposited layer of copper oxide nanoparticles to study the influence of nanoparticles (NPs) on the ablation and plasma excitation. The obtained results imply that the presence of Cu oxide NPs does not significantly affect the analytical performance of LIBS based on TEA CO2 laser for analysis of solutions. At the same time, it was shown that plasma created by TEA CO2 laser radiation efficiently excited ablated material, making metal elements detectable in the sub-ppm concentration range. On the other hand, Cu oxide NPs significantly influence the formation and the analytical properties of plasma induced by Nd:YAG laser. Without the presence of NPs, the intensities of analyte lines were very low, unsuitable for spectrochemical analysis. At the optimal surface concentration of NPs, 0.36 mg/cm2, the intensity of analyte lines was increased more than ten times. Limits of detection of Be and Cr were 5.3 ppb and 33 ppb, with good linearity of curves of growth.

AB  - ObjectivesGalectin-3 affects a variety of biological processes. It is encoded by LGALS-3, located in unique haplotype block in Caucasians. Most of the studies regarding the gal-3 role in atherosclerosis are focused exclusively on protein/mRNA levels. Genetic analyses of LGALS-3 are scarce. We sought to thoroughly examine the genetic background of gal-3 and to analyze tag variants that cover more than 80% variability of the LGALS-3 containing hap-block in association with carotid plaque presence (CPP). According to Tagger server, rs4040064 G/T, rs11628437 G/A and rs7159490 C/T cover 82% (r2 > 0.8) of the genetic variance of this hap-block. Our aims were to investigate possible association of rs4040064, rs11628437 and rs7159490 haplotypes with CPP in patients with advanced carotid atherosclerosis (CA) and to analyze their possible effect on LGALS-3 mRNA expression in carotid plaques.Materials and methodsStudy group consisted of 468 patients and 296 controls. Rs4040064, rs11628437, rs7159490 and LGALS-3 mRNA expression were detected by TaqMan® technology.ResultsWe have found that haplotype TAC was associated with the cerebrovascular insult (CVI) occurrence (OR = 1.68, 95% CI = 1.09-2.58, p = 0.02), compared to the referent haplotype. OR was adjusted for hypertension, age and BMI. TAC also showed higher, but not statistically significant, LGALS-3 expression in carotid plaques.ConclusionsOur results suggest that rs4040064, rs11628437 and rs7159490 bear no association with CPP, neither they affect LGALS-3 mRNA in carotid plaques. However, we showed a significant association of haplotype TAC with the CVI occurrence in CA patients from Serbia. Replication and validation of our results are required.

TAC also showed higher, but not statistically significant, LGALS-3 expression in carotid plaques.ConclusionsOur results suggest that rs4040064, rs11628437 and rs7159490 bear no association with CPP, neither they affect LGALS-3 mRNA in carotid plaques. However, we showed a significant association of haplotype TAC with the CVI occurrence in CA patients from Serbia. Replication and validation of our results are required.",

AB  - The potential re-use of red mud in the building and construction industry has been the subject of research of many scientists. The presented research is a contribution to the potential solution of this environmental issue through the synthesis of potential construction materials based on red mud. A promising way of recycling these secondary raw materials is the synthesis of alkali-activated binders or alkali activated materials. Alkali-activated materials or inorganic binders based on red mud are a new class of materials obtained by activation of inorganic precursors mainly constituted by silica, alumina and low content of calcium oxide. Since red mud contains radioactive elements like 226Ra and 232Th, this may be a problem for its further utilization. The content of naturally occurring radionuclides in manufactured material products with potential application in the building and construction industry is important from the standpoint of radiation protection. Gamma radiation of the primordial radionuclides, 40K and members of the uranium and thorium series, increases the external gamma dose rate. However, more and more precedence is being given to limiting the radiological dose originating from building materials on the population these days. The aim of this research was to investigate the possible influence of alkali activation-polymerization processes on the natural radioactivity of alkali activated materials synthesized by red mud (BOKSIT a. d. Milići, Zvornik, Bosnia and Herzegovina) and their structural properties. This research confirmed that during the polymerization process the natural radioactivity was reduced, and that the process of alkali activation of raw materials has an influence on natural radioactivity of synthesized materials.

AB  - Results concerning the controllable ablation of nano-layered thin films (NLTF) by femtosecond laser pulses are presented. Investigated samples were titanium-aluminum bilayers, deposited on a silicon substrate, with the top titanium or aluminum layer of variable thickness on the surface. Irradiation was done in ambient air with single femtosecond laser pulses under standard laboratory conditions. The samples were analyzed by complementary methods of optical and scanning electron microscopy and optical profilometry, exhibiting laser-fluence-dependent ablative removal either of the top layer or the entire bilayer or even partial ablation of the underlying silicon substrate. The removal (spallation) threshold fluences for the topmost layer are scalable versus its thickness almost irrespectively of its material, being rather selective for the Ti-coated samples and much less selective for the Al-coated samples. The removal of the entire bilayers was found to be strongly influenced by electronic properties of the underlying metallic layer, dictating the NLTF-Si adhesion, heat conduction, and capacity in the NLTFs toward the NLTF-Si interface and beyond, as well as by their thermophysical characteristics, e.g., almost twice higher melting temperature and enthalpy for Ti. As a result, precise fs-laser machining of the entire NLTFs is pronounced and selective for the samples with the fusible Al at the low-adhesion Al-Si interfaces, compared with the incomplete NLTF removal from the high-adhesion and refractory Ti-Si interfaces.

AB  - Results regarding morphological and compositional changes of bimetallic thin film (BMTF), composed of aluminium (Al) and titanium (Ti) nano-layers, by single fs laser pulses, are presented. Laser irradiation was conducted in the air with focused, linearly polarized laser pulses, the duration being 300 fs, wavelength 515 nm, and pulse energy up to 1.2μJ. Effects of the variations of the pulse energy on the changes were studied. In the experiment, single pulse energy values from 0.03 to 0.08 μ J caused ablation–photomechanical spallation of the upper part of BMTF layer from the Si substrate, without ablation of the whole film. Irradiation at higher pulse energies gradually removed the whole BMTF and even a part of the Si substrate. We explained the influence of different electron–phonon dynamics, in the case of multilayered thin films composed of Al and Ti, on BMTF ablation. Damage/ablation threshold, which is minimal pulse energy/fluence sufficient for starting ablation, was calculated. AB  - This study investigates the beryllium-7, lead-210 and caesium-137 activity concentrations in aerosol filter samples collected monthly along the 45°N zonal belt over 1991–2019. Sampling was performed in three locations, one in Serbia and two in Slovenia, and the Slovenian data records are published here for the first time. The activity concentrations were determined by standard gamma spectrometry. The obtained results are in general agreement with the literature data for Europe. The data sets at different sites display similarities in measurement ranges, overall means and seasonal cycles. Still, statistical tests show significant differences among the radionuclides’ concentrations across the locations. To investigate underlying processes that affect radioactivity in the surface air in this region, multivariate statistical concepts are applied to the radionuclides’ concentrations and local meteorological parameters. Discriminant analysis shows that all three sites are well separated from each other. Principal component analysis gives common pattern of interconnection between the observables: temperature has a stronger influence on the behaviour of beryllium-7 and lead-210 than that of caesium-137, but a negative correlation of the radionuclides’ concentrations with precipitation seems the strongest for caesium-137. Principal component analysis also shows local differences in the degree of relationship between the meteorological parameters and activity concentrations of the investigated radionuclides. This is an important finding for future atmospheric transport studies.

AB  - Prema važećoj zakonskoj regulativi u Republici Srbiji kontrola radiološke ispravnosti otpadnih materijala vrši se na graničnim prelazima, kao i kada postoji namera odlaganja u životnu sredinu. Sadržaj radionuklida u otpadnim materijalima u najvećem broju slučajeva odredjuje se gamaspektrometrijskim ispitivanjem. Ova merenja podrazumevaju adekvatnu pripremu uzorka u cilju postizanja željene geometrije merenja za koju je izvršena kalibracija efikasnosti gama spektrometra. U postupku pripreme uzorka otpadnog materijala često nije moguće postići zadovoljavajuću homogenost. Takodje, matriks merenog materijala u većini slučajeva ne odgovara matriksu standarda pomoću kojeg je izvršena kalibracija spektrometra. Iz ovih razloga je potrebno izvršiti odredjene korekcije rezultata merenja (transfer efikasnosti, na pr.), kao i proširenje budžeta merne nesigurnosti. U radu je detaljno prikazan postupak procene doprinosa nehomogenosti uzorka mernoj nesigurnosti, kao i doprinosa koji u budžet merne nesigurnosti unosi transfer efikasnosti i primena korekcionih faktora za koincidentno sumiranje.
AB  - According to the current legislation in the Republic of Serbia, the radiological control of waste materials is performed at border crossings, as well as when there is an intention to dispose these materials in the environment. The gamma ray spectrometry is commonly used for determination of radionuclide content in waste materials. These measurements imply adequate sample preparation in order to achieve the desired measurement geometry for which the efficiency of the gamma spectrometer has been calibrated. Satisfactory homogeneity is often not possible to achieve in the sample preparation process. Also, the matrix of the measured material in most cases does not correspond to the matrix of the standard used for efficiency calibration of the spectrometer. For these reasons, it is necessary to make certain corrections to the measurement results (efficiency transfer, for example), as well as to expand the measurement uncertainty budget. The paper presents in detail the procedure for assessing the contribution of inhomogeneity of the sample to the measurement uncertainty, as well as the contribution that the efficiency transfer and coincidence summing corrections introduce to the measurement uncertainty budget.

AB  - Programom sistematskog ispitivanja nivoa radioaktivnosti u životnoj sredini na teritoriji Beograda predviđeno je merenje koncentracije radona (222Rn) u stambenim objektima, školskim i predškolskim ustanovama. Laboratorija "Zaštita", Instituta za nuklearne nauke "Vinča" je u periodu 2016-2020. izvršila ispitivanja u 547 prostorija (99 u stambenim objektima, 341 u školskim ustanovama i 107 u predškolskim jedinicama). Prosečna koncentracija 222Rn je iznosila 105 Bq/m3, a koncentarcija ispod 100 Bq/m3 je izmerena u 76,60 % prostorija. Vrednost od 400 Bq/m3 je prekoračena u 4,94 % prostorija. Od 15 beogradskih opština, koliko je pokriveno ovim istraživanjem, u 8 je detektovana koncentracija iznad 400 Bq/m3. Maksimalna izmerena vrednost u stambenim objektima je iznosila 3550 Bq/m3, dok je u vaspitno-obrazovnim ustanovama najveća detektovana koncentracija bila 1910 Bq/m3.
AB  - The program of the level of radioactivity in the environment monitoring on the territory of Belgrade envisages measuring the concentration of radon in residential buildings, schools and kindergartens. The Department of Radiation and Environmental Protection of the Institute of Nuclear Sciences "Vinca" conducted examination in 547 rooms (99 in residential buildings, 341 in schools and 107 in kindergartens) in the period 2016-2020. The average concentration of 222Rn is 105 Bq/m3, and the concentration below 100 Bq/m3 was measured in 76.60 % of the rooms. The value of 400 Bq/m3 was exceeded in 4.94 % of the rooms. Out of 15 Belgrade municipalities covered by this research, a concentration above 400 Bq/m3 was detected in 8 municipalities. The maximum measured value in residential buildings was 3550 Bq/m3, while in educational institutions the highest detected concentration was 1910 Bq/m3.

AB  - High-entropy rare-earth (RE) zirconates with pyrochlore structure were successfully fabricated by pressureless and spark plasma sintering. RE2Zr2O7 compound with nominal composition (La0.2Y0.2Gd0.2Nd0.2Sm0.2)Zr2O7 was prepared by simple glycine nitrate procedure (GNP). GNP process yielded powders with low crystallinity and after subsequent calcination, well crystalline ceramics were formed. During calcination defective fluorite (F-RE2Zr2O7) and crystal pyrochlore (Py-RE2Zr2O7) structures coexist. Formation of pure crystalline pyrochlore occurs after sintering at 1450°C. High-density ceramics, free of any additives, were obtained after powders compaction and pressureless (PS), as well as field assisted sintering technique (FAST) at 1450°C. Theoretical investigations of the high-entropy RE2Zr2O7 pyrochlore systems were performed. Unit cell parameter of the obtained Py-RE2Zr2O7 is 10.5892(2)Å and 10.5999(2)Å for PS and FAST sintering, respectively, which is in good agreement with the results of Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. The thermal diffusivity of sintered samples at room temperature was ∼0.7mm2/s for both sintering methods.ResumenSe fabricaron con éxito, mediante sinterización por plasma sin presión y por chispa, los circonatos de tierras raras (RE) de alta entropía con estructura de pirocloro. El compuesto RE2Zr2O7 con composición nominal (La0,2Y0,2Gd0,2Nd0,2Sm0,2)Zr2O7 se preparó mediante un procedimiento simple de nitrato de glicina (GNP). El proceso GNP produjo polvos con baja cristalinidad y después de la posterior calcinación, se formaron cerámicas bien cristalinas. Durante la calcinación coexisten estructuras defectuosas de fluorita (F-RE2Zr2O7) y pirocloro cristalino (Py-RE2Zr2O7). La formación de pirocloro cristalino puro se produce después de la sinterización a 1.450°C. Después de la compactación de polvos y sin presión (PS), así como por la técnica de sinterización asistida en campo (FAST) a 1.450 oC, se obtuvieron cerámicas de alta densidad, libres de aditivos. Se realizaron investigaciones teóricas de los sistemas de pirocloro RE2Zr2O7 de alta entropía. El parámetro de celda unitaria del Py-RE2Zr2O7 obtenido es 105.892(2) Å y 105.999(2) Å para la sinterización PS y FAST, respectivamente, lo que está de acuerdo con los resultados de los cálculos de la teoría funcional de la densidad (DFT). AB  - Due to the increased use of yttrium in agriculture and industry, there is a growing interest in the impact of yttrium on the environment and human health. Developing novel procedures to detect and quantify species of yttrium represents an important task. In this work, we apply laser desorption/ionization-mass spectrometry (LDI-MS) to detect cluster ions of the solution of yttrium(III) chloride (YCl3) at different pH values. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to reveal the energetically most favored structures of the anions and cations chosen from the LDI-MS results. Examination of the positive and negative mode LDI mass spectra of YCl3 showed the presence of the heterogeneous mononuclear and polynuclear clusters, such as [YCl(OH) (H2O)3]++, [Y2(H2O)]++, [Y4H2(H2O)4]++, and [Y5O4H3]++ (at pH 2 and 5) and [Y2Cl2(H2O)2]−−, [Y2O5(HCl)(OH)]−−, and [Y3OH3(OH)2(H2O)]−− (at pH 2, 5, and 10). Developing novel procedures to detect and quantify species of yttrium represents an important task. In this work, we apply laser desorption/ionization-mass spectrometry (LDI-MS) to detect cluster ions of the solution of yttrium(III) chloride (YCl3) at different pH values. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to reveal the energetically most favored structures of the anions and cations chosen from the LDI-MS results. Examination of the positive and negative mode LDI mass spectra of YCl3 showed the presence of the heterogeneous mononuclear and polynuclear clusters, such as [YCl(OH) (H2O)3]++, [Y2(H2O)]++, [Y4H2(H2O)4]++, and [Y5O4H3]++ (at pH 2 and 5) and [Y2Cl2(H2O)2]−−, [Y2O5(HCl)(OH)]−−, and [Y3OH3(OH)2(H2O)]−− (at pH 2, 5, and 10). AB  - The carbon cryogels (CCs) show significant potential for application in a wide variety of applications, from absorbents and catalysts to supercapacitors and fuel cells, due to their high specific surface area, multimodal pore-size distribution, electrical conductivity, and thermo-mechanical stability. In the present study, the CC material was prepared by a sol-gel process from resorcinol with formaldehyde and heat treatment in an inert atmosphere. The Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET) measurements, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), differential thermal analysis with thermogravimetric measurements (DTA-TG), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) analysis, as complementary techniques, were used to characterize the obtained CC. It was found that the obtained CC is a porous amorphous material with high open porosity (≈82.5%) and complex porous structure organization. Using the small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) with the contrast variation technique and the adsorption of deuterated water by carbon cryogel it was possible to separately study the structure of open and closed pores, as well as to estimate both the volume fraction of closed pores (φclose pore ≈ 1%) and the total porosity (φtotal ≈ 83.5%) of the obtained CC.

AB  - The results of the gamma-spectrometric measurements in a 16500 ha large region of south-western Serbia, are presented. Activity concentrations of 40K, 137Cs, and 210Pb in different deciduous and evergreen trees in the region are investigated. For all the investigated isotopes, there is a tendency that, on average, the lowest activity concentrations were found in tree stems, then in leaves, while the highest ones were in the soil. Statistical analysis did not show any differences between activity concentrations of leaves and needles, showing that both leaves and needles could be equally well used as a biomonitors.

AB  - Breast cancer is the most commonly occurring malignancy and the leading cause of cancer-related death in women. Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is the most aggressive subtype and is associated with high recurrence rates, high incidence of distant metastases, and poor overall survival. The aim of this study was to investigate the PI3K/PTEN/Akt/mTOR pathway as one of the most frequently deregulated pathways in cancer. We aimed to explore the impact of PI3K and mTOR oncogenes as well as the PTEN tumor suppressor on TNBC clinical behavior, prognosis, and multidrug resistance (MDR), using immunohistochemistry and copy number analysis by quantitative real-time PCR. Our results revealed that loss of PTEN and high expression of PI3K and mTOR proteins are associated with poor outcome of TNBC patients. PTEN deletions appeared as a major cause of reduced or absent PTEN expression in TNBC. Importantly, homozygous deletions of PTEN (and not hemizygous deletions) are a potential molecular marker of metastasis formation and good predictors of TNBC outcome. In conclusion, we believe that concurrent examination of PTEN/PI3K/mTOR protein expression may be more useful in predicting TNBC clinical course than the analysis of single protein expression. Specifically, our results showed that PTEN-reduced/PI3K-high/mTOR-high expression constitutes a 'high risk' profile of TNBC.

AB  - Liverworts are characterized by a high content of bioactive compounds reported to show antimicrobial, anticancer, and antioxidant properties. In this study, the biological effects of the methanol extract of the liverwort Pellia endiviifolia and its constituents, bis-bibenzyls perrottetin E, 10′-hydroxyperrottetin E, and 10,10′-dihydroxyperrottetin E, were investigated using human peripheral blood cells as a model system. The assessment of the investigated compounds comprised testing their genotoxicity, apoptotic potential, and redox modulating activities. The genotoxicity testing indicated that medium (25 µM) and high concentrations (100 µM) of the investigated compounds displayed genotoxic and antiproliferative effects in human lymphocytes as revealed by significant, concentration-dependent enhancement of the micronuclei incidence and decrease in the cytokinesis-block proliferation index compared to the control (P <.001). Analysis of leukocyte apoptosis showed a substantial potential of all investigated compounds to induce apoptosis, which was not concentration-dependent. The P endiviifolia extract and perrottetin E demonstrated considerable pro-apoptotic potential, even at the lowest concentration (1 µM) applied. Evaluation of the redox modulating effects, which comprised measuring erythrocyte catalase activity and the lymphocyte malondialdehyde level, showed that the investigated compounds did not induce oxidative stress in human peripheral blood cells (P >.05). The observed genotoxic, antiproliferative, and proapoptotic effects of the investigated compounds make them suitable for further comprehensive studies related to their possible applications as anticancer agents.

It is regularly used in clinical (overt) hypothyroidism cases and subclinical (latent) hypothyroidism cases in the last decade. Suppressive LT4 therapy is also part of the medical regimen used to manage thyroid malignancies after a thyroidectomy. LT4 treatment possesses dual effects: substituting new-onset thyroid hormone deficiency and suppressing the local and distant malignancy spreading in cancer. It is the practice to administer LT4 in less-than-high suppressive doses for growth control of thyroid nodules and goiter, even in patients with preserved thyroid function. Despite its approved safety for clinical use, LT4 can sometimes induce side-effects, more often recorded with patients under treatment with LT4 suppressive doses than in unintentionally LT4-overdosed patients. Cardiac arrhythmias and the deterioration of osteoporosis are the most frequently documented side-effects of LT4 therapy. It also lowers the threshold for the onset or aggravation of cardiac arrhythmias for patients with pre-existing heart diseases. To improve the quality of life in LT4-substituted patients, clinicians often prescribe higher doses of LT4 to reach low normal TSH levels to achieve cellular euthyroidism. In such circumstances, the risk of cardiac arrhythmias, particularly atrial fibrillation, increases, and the combined use of LT4 and triiodothyronine further complicates such risk. This review summarizes the relevant available data related to LT4 suppressive treatment and the associated risk of cardiac arrhythmia.

Cardiac arrhythmias and the deterioration of osteoporosis are the most frequently documented side-effects of LT4 therapy. It also lowers the threshold for the onset or aggravation of cardiac arrhythmias for patients with pre-existing heart diseases. To improve the quality of life in LT4-substituted patients, clinicians often prescribe higher doses of LT4 to reach low normal TSH levels to achieve cellular euthyroidism. In such circumstances, the risk of cardiac arrhythmias, particularly atrial fibrillation, increases, and the combined use of LT4 and triiodothyronine further complicates such risk. This review summarizes the relevant available data related to LT4 suppressive treatment and the associated risk of cardiac arrhythmia.",

AB  - During the last 20 years, the scientific community has shown growing interest towards carbonaceous nanomaterials due to their appealing mechanical, thermal, and optical features, depending on the specific nanoforms. Among these, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) recently emerged as one of the most promising nanomaterials due to their outstanding electrical properties, chemical stability, and intense and tunable photoluminescence, as it is witnessed by a booming number of reported applications, ranging from the biological field to the photovoltaic market. To date, a plethora of synthetic protocols have been investigated to modulate the portfolio of features that GQDs possess and to facilitate the use of these materials for target applications. Considering the number of publications and the rapid evolution of this flourishing field of research, this review aims at providing a broad overview of the most widely established synthetic protocols and offering a detailed review of some specific applications that are attracting researchers’ interest.

AB  - Copper slag flotation tailings (CSFT), as the end waste from copper mining, are evaluated for radionuclide and heavy metal immobilization. Characterization of CSFT based on grain size and mineral composition, surface functional groups, pH and electrical conductivity in aqueous media, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), determination of characteristic temperatures in sample melting process, leachability, and toxicity tests is conducted. The screening sorption of Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), and Pb(II) inactive isotopes from single-component solutions is performed. The Cd(II) ions show better sorption potential than other ions, with a sorption capacity of 0.08 mmol g−1 at the highest initial concentration. Sorption decreases in the sequence Cd(II) > Pb(II) > Zn(II) > Mn(II) > Ni(II) > Co(II) at all initial concentrations. Although CSFT shows lower sorption capability than synthetic sorbents based on fayalite and magnetite, its inexpensiveness and substantial accessible amount represent great advantages in wider utilization.

AB  - In the past century, the use of polymers and composites with a polymer matrix has expanded to such a level that today it is impossible to imagine life without these materials. Epoxy resin and epoxy-based composites are widely used as construction materials, due to their excellent adhesion, thermal and chemical stability. Fractal nature analysis can provide insight in morphological changes at fiber-matrix interface level, which could give direction for the processing of composites. This mathematical technique can be performed on field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) images, by identifying fiber phase and pores shapes and boundaries, as well as fiber-matrix bonding at the interface. In this study, fiberglass mat was used for the reinforcement of epoxy. FESEM image of enlarged fiber after the composite fracture was used for the reconstruction of data. With the use of affine fractal regression model, software Fractal Real Finder was employed for the reconstruction of fiber shape and the determination of Hausdorff dimension. © 2021 IEEE.

AB  - Herein, the stability, lipophilicity, in vitro cytotoxicity, and influence on acetylcholinesterase of five dinuclear platinum(II) complexes with the general formula [{Pt(en)Cl}2(μ-L)]2+ (L is a different aromatic nitrogen-containing heterocyclic bridging ligands pyrazine (pz, Pt1), pyridazine (pydz, Pt2), quinoxaline (qx, Pt3), phthalazine (phtz, Pt4) and quinazoline (qz, Pt5), while en is bidentate coordinated ethylenediamine) were evaluated. The most active analyzed platinum complexes induced time-dependent growth inhibition of A375, HeLa, PANC-1, and MRC-5 cells. The best efficiency was achieved on HeLa and PANC-1 cells for Pt1, Pt2, and Pt3 at the highest concentration, while Pt1 was significantly more potent than cisplatin at a lower concentration. Additionally, a lower effect on normal cells was observed compared to cisplatin, which may indicate potentially fewer side effects of these complexes. Selected complexes induce reactive oxygen species and apoptosis on tumor cell lines. The most potent reversible acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors were Pt2, Pt4, and Pt5. Pt1 showed similar inhibitory potential toward AChE as cisplatin, but a different type of inhibition, which could contribute to lower neurotoxicity. Docking studies revealed that Pt2 and Pt4 were bound to the active gorge above the catalytic triad. In contrast, the other complexes were bound to the edge of the active gorge without impeding the approach to the catalytic triad. According to this, Pt1 represents a promising compound with potent anticancer properties, high selectivity, and low neurotoxicity.

AB  - Da bi se postigla tačnost i preciznost dobijenih rezultata pri gamaspektrometrijskom merenju uzoraka iz životne sredine neophodno je obezbediti odgovarajuće kalibracione standarde. Imajući u vidu da i sami standardi vremenom gube na kvalitetu zbog degradacije matriksa, od izuzetne je važnosti praćenje stabilnosti standarda koji se koriste. U ovom radu prikazani su rezultati ispitivanja karakteristika krivih efikasnosti u odnosu na starenje matriksa. Napravljeni su radni kalibracioni standardi sa tri različita matriksa (aktivni ugalj, zemlja i pesak), upakovani u cilindričnu geometriju kutijice od 120 ml i 250 ml i mereni na poluprovodničkom HPGe detektoru. Isti standardi ponovo su mereni nakon četiri godine u kontakt geometriji u odnosu na detektor i izvrnuto sa poklopcem kutijice ka detektoru. Analiza dobijenih rezultata pokazala je odstupanja u vrednostima efikasnosti, što ukazuje na degradaciju svih standarda u smislu narušavanja njihove homogenosti. Takvi standardi se ne mogu smatrati pouzdanim za korišćenje.
AB  - The gammaspectrometric measurement of the environmental samples requires the use of appropriate calibration standards in order to achieve the accuracy and precision of the obtained results. Taking into account that the standards lose their quality over time due to the degradation of the matrix, it is extremely important to keep tracking their stability. Comprehensive reconsideration on efficiency curves with respect to the ageing of calibration standards is presented in this paper. Spiked laboratory standards of different matrices (active coal, soil and sand) were prepared in two measurement geometries, PVC cylindrical 120 ml and 250 ml boxes. The same standards were measured after four years in contact geometry on the detector and upside down (box cover towards the detector). The analysis of the obtained results showed discrepancies in efficiency values and it indicates that the homogeneity of standards is disturbed. Such standards are not reliable for use.

Takvi standardi se ne mogu smatrati pouzdanim za korišćenje., The gammaspectrometric measurement of the environmental samples requires the use of appropriate calibration standards in order to achieve the accuracy and precision of the obtained results. Taking into account that the standards lose their quality over time due to the degradation of the matrix, it is extremely important to keep tracking their stability. Comprehensive reconsideration on efficiency curves with respect to the ageing of calibration standards is presented in this paper. Spiked laboratory standards of different matrices (active coal, soil and sand) were prepared in two measurement geometries, PVC cylindrical 120 ml and 250 ml boxes. The same standards were measured after four years in contact geometry on the detector and upside down (box cover towards the detector). The analysis of the obtained results showed discrepancies in efficiency values and it indicates that the homogeneity of standards is disturbed. Such standards are not reliable for use.",
