AB - Potassium salts of 12-tungstophosphoric acid with varying amounts of cation, KxH3 - xPW12O40(x = 1, 2, 3) have been prepared and their characteristics investigated by thermal analyses. FT-IR and micro-Raman spectroscopy and SEM-EDS analysis. It was found that the number of replaced protons by potassium ions in the 12-tungstophosphoric acid structure has influence on the presence of different protonic species, their dynamic equilibrium and on the conductivity of salts. The results reported in this study have been applied to improve the structural model of insoluble acidic salts. It is shown that an acidic potassium salt presents a mixture of neutral salt and unreacted acid. The nature of this mixture depends on the number of replaced protons-oxonium ions by cations. Preliminary measurements with synthesized compounds as solid electrolytes in fuel cells have been done, too. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - We synthesized both the V2O5 xerogel and the composite V2O5 xerogel/C starting from the solution of V2O5 in hydrogen peroxide. After the characterization by XRD, thermal (TCA-DTA), SEM methods and by particle size analysis, the investigation of Li+ and Mg2+ intercalation/deintercalation reactions in an aqueous solutions of LiNO3 and Mg(NO3)(2) were performed by cyclic voltammetry. The composite material V2O5 xerogel/C displayed relatively high intercalation capacity, amounting to 123 mA h g(-1) and 107 mA h g(-1), in lithium and magnesium salt solutions, respectively.

AB - Composite xerogel V2O5 /C was synthesized by sol-gel method starting from the
solution of crystalline V2O5 in hydrogen peroxide. The investigations of Li+
intercalation/deintercalation reaction in aqueous solutions of LiNO3 with addition
of additive vinylene carbonate (VC) in concentration of 0 and 1% were performed
by galvanostatic cycling. Upon addition of VC, the initial discharge capacity
increased for 5.6% and the capacity fade after 50 cycles was reduced for 1.8%.
These facts indicate that the addition of VC to the aqueous electrolyte solution
improved markedly the electrochemical performance of the composite xerogel
V2O5/C used as an anodic lithium intercalation material.

AB - The intermetallic compound (HfNi)-Ni-2 was the subject of investigations by several methods. The relative stability was checked by calculating its enthalpy and cohesive properties, using the augmented plane wave plus local orbitals (APW + lo) method of ab initio calculations. The kinetics of hydrogen absorption in this compound was investigated in the temperature range from 573 to 823 K, under the constant hydrogen pressure of 1 bar. The obtained rate constants, k (s(-1)), and hydriding capacities (H/M) are as follows: 0.00038 (0.69), 0.00131 (0.95), 0.00246 (1.13) and 0.0042 (0.92) for temperatures 573, 673, 723 and 823 K, respectively. The changes in crystal structure and morphology caused by multiple hydriding/dehydriding cycles were followed by XRD and SEM. (C) 2009 International Association for Hydrogen Energy. AB - By dissolving crystalline V2O5 in hydrogen peroxide and drying at elevated temperature, the V2O5 xerogel was obtained. Its electrochemical behaviour was examined in aqueous solution of LiNO3 by both cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charging/discharging cycling. Peak-to-peak potential separation observed at the cyclovoltammograms indicated fast Li+ intercalation/deintercalation reactions. Initial discharge capacity amounted to 69 mAhg(-1), and after 100 charging/discharging cycles, capacity fade amounted to 11% only. This presents a remarkable improvement in comparison with the behaviour of crystalline, vanadium oxide based, lithium intercalates in aqueous electrolytes. (c) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - Three different forms of Ag/TiO2 composite layers, which have whisker-, dot- and island-like distribution of silver were obtained on a mechanically polished titanium surface by adjusting the conditions of silver deposition from an aqueous AgNO3 solution. The deposit morphology was the result of both the program of electrode polarization and the template action of the simultaneously formed TiO2 layer. The catalytic activity of the composite layers toward the oxygen reduction reaction was studied in aqueous 0.1 M NaOH solutions and found to be a function of both the surface loading of silver and the type of silver distribution within the Ag/TiO2 composite layers. The reaction path of oxygen reduction on the composite layers was found to be always a 4e(-) one, characteristic otherwise of polycrystalline silver electrodes.

AB - In order to obtain faster hydrogen sorption kinetics, MgH2-Ti nanocomposites were prepared by high-energy ball milling, under Ar using 10:1 ball to powder ratio and 10% of catalyst. Microstructural and morphological characterization, performed by XRD and optical microscopy analysis, show a correlation with thermal stability and hydrogen desorption properties investigated by DTA. In order to obtain deeper insight into bonding mechanisms of Ti in MgH2 fully relaxed structure, we have performed ab initio electronic structure calculations of MgH2 + Ti system, using Full Potential Linearized Augmented Plane Wave method, as implemented in WIEN2K code.
