AB - This paper provides an overview of the characteristics of different neural networks trained on the same theoretical database of n-type silicon photoacoustic signals. By adding different levels of random Gaussian noise to the training input signals, two important goals were achieved. First, the optimal level of noise was found which significantly shortens the training networks with minimal loss of accuracy of its predictions. Second, the termination criteria of networks training were activated to avoid overtraining, i.e., networks generalization was performed. A networks efficiency analysis was performed on both theoretical and experimental photoacoustic signals, resulting in a selection of one neural network that is optimal to the performance requirements of the real experiment. It is indicated that the application of such trained networks is more reliable on thicker semiconductors, whose thickness is greater than the value of the carrier diffusion length in the investigated sample. © 2020, Springer Nature B.V.

AB - We developed a method of inverse problem solving in semiconductor photoacoustics based on neural networks application. Simple structured neural networks, trained on a large set of data obtained by the well–known theoretical models in the 20 Hz–20 kHz modulation frequency range, are applied to determine thermal diffusivity, coefficient of linear expansion and thickness of n–type silicon samples, using undistorted experimental photoacoustic signals. The efficiency of the neural networks was tested depending on the type of input data, showing the best performances in the case when signal amplitudes and phases are simultaneously presented to the network. Real–time parameter prediction is achieved together with high accuracy and reliability allowing one to perform the full characterization of a sample in the frequency domain.

AB - In this paper, a methodology for the application of neural networks in phase-match calibration of gas–microphone photoacoustics in frequency domain is developed. A two-layer deep neural network is used to determine, in real-time, reliably and accurately, the phase transfer function of the used microphone, applying the photoacoustic response of aluminum as reference material. This transfer function was used to correct the photoacoustic response of laser-sintered polyamide and to compare it with theoretical predictions. The obtained degree of correlation of the corrected and theoretical signal tells us that our method of phase-match calibration in photoacoustics can be generalized to a photoacoustic response coming from a solid sample made of different materials.

AB - This paper introduces the possibility of the determination of optical absorption and reflexivity coefficient of silicon samples using neural networks and reverse-back procedure based on the photoacoustics response in the frequency domain. Differences between neural network predictions and parameters obtained with standard photoacoustic signal correction procedures are used to adjust our experimental set-up due to the instability of the optical excitation source and the state (contamination) of the illuminated surface. It has been shown that the changes of the optical absorption values correspond to the light source wavelength fluctuations, while changes in the reflexivity coefficient, obtained in this way, correspond to the small effect of the ultrathin layer formation of SiO2 due to the natural process of surface oxidation.

AB - In this article, a method for determination of photoacoustic detector transfer function as an accurate representation of microphone frequency response is presented. The method is based on supervised machine learning techniques, classification and regression, performed by two artificial neural networks. The transfer function is obtained by determining the microphone type and characteristic parameters closely related to its filtering properties. This knowledge is crucial within the signal correction procedure. The method is carefully designed in order to maintain requirements of photoacoustic experiment accuracy, reliability and real-time performance. The networks training is performed using large base of theoretical signals simulating frequency response of three types of commercial electret microphones frequently used in photoacoustic measurements extended with possible flat response of the so-called ideal microphone. The method test is performed with simulated and experimental signals assuming the usage of open-cell photoacoustic set-up. Experimental testing leads to the microphone transfer function determination used to correct the experimental signals, targeting the “true” undistorted photoacoustic response which can be further used in material characterization process.

AB - An analysis of the application of neural networks as a reliable, precise, and fast tool in open-cell photoacoustics setups for the recognition of microphone effects in the frequency domain from 10 Hz to 100 × 104 Hz is presented. The network is trained to achieve simultaneous recognition of microphone characteristics, which are the most important parameters leading to the distortion of photoacoustic signals in both amplitude and phase. The training is carried out using a theoretically obtained database of amplitudes and phases as the input and five microphone characteristics as the output, based on transmission measurements obtained using an open photoacoustic cell setup. The results show that the network can precisely and reliably interpolate the output to recognize microphone characteristics including electronic effects in the low and acoustic effects in the high frequency domain. The simulations reveal that the network is not capable of interpolating an input including modulation frequencies. Consequently, in real applications, the network training must be adapted to the experimental frequencies, or vice versa. The total number of frequencies used in the experiment must also be in accordance with the total number of frequencies used in the network training.

AB - Based on the experimental and theoretical signals of an open photoacoustic cell operating with modulation frequencies from 20 Hz to
20 kHz, a significant contribution of photogenerated excess carriers on the thermal and thermoelastic responses of an n-type silicon plate is
observed for the very first time. This is achieved by comparing the measured amplitude and phase of the photoacoustic signal with their
corresponding theoretical thermoelastic counterparts, for high enough modulation frequencies mainly. It is shown that the amplitude of the
thermoelastic component of plasma-thin samples varies about two orders of magnitude with respect to the corresponding one of
plasma-thick samples. Furthermore, we find a maximal temperature difference ΔT =− 35 nK between the illuminated and non-illuminated
sample surfaces, which shows that thin silicon plates with excess carriers could be used as heat sinks.

thermoelastic component of plasma-thin samples varies about two orders of magnitude with respect to the corresponding one of
plasma-thick samples. Furthermore, we find a maximal temperature difference ΔT =− 35 nK between the illuminated and non-illuminated
sample surfaces, which shows that thin silicon plates with excess carriers could be used as heat sinks.",

AB - In this paper, a simple multilayer perceptron neural network with forward signal propagation was designed and used to simultaneously determine the main physical parameters, such as: the thermal diffusivity, thermal expansion coefficient and thickness, from the transmission, frequency-modulated photoacoustic response of the sample. The amplitude and phase responses of the transmission open-cell photoacoustic signals were calculated in n-type silicon plates using a theoretical model and were used to train and test a neural network. The simulation was done in the modulation frequency range from 20 Hz to 20 kHz and using a wide range of expected values of thermal diffusivity and the thermal coefficient of expansion for semiconductor samples as well as their thickness. The advantages and disadvantages of neural networks utilization as an appropriate mathematical tool designated for semiconductor measurement-oriented purposes are analyzed. Network reliability, precision, and the possibility of operation in real time have been verified on an independent set of signals, establishing photoacoustics as a competitive and powerful technique assigned for material characterization. © 2019, Springer Nature B.V.

AB - This study is devoted to the angular and spatial distribution of protons channeling through a bent and radially deformed single-wall boron-nitride nanotubes (SWBNNTs). These nanotubes are more thermal and chemical stable then carbon nanotubes, and they are good candidates for future channeling experiments. This investigation is continuation of our previous study [1, 2] and now we investigate channeling properties of SWBNNTs as a function of the very realistic effects: bending angle of nanotube and its radial deformation. For the first time we presented here investigation of these effects with boron-nitride nanotubes and combination of both effect. The angular and spatial distributions of channeled protons were generated using the Molière’s expression for the continuum potential of the SWBNNT’s atoms and computer simulation method. We also calculate the total yield of protons channeled in the nanotubes as a function of the bending angle. We demonstrate that varying bending angle and taking into account radial deformation we can get a significant rearrangement of the propagating protons within the boron-nitride nanotube. This investigation may be very useful to give us detailed information on the relevant interaction potentials inside SWBNNTs and for creating nanosized proton beams to be used in different applications in medicine and materials science. © 2019, Editura Academiei Romane. AB - Low-temperature plasma is widely used in many surface treatment technologies for modifications of the physical properties of different polymeric materials. In the present work, we have examined the modification of acoustical properties of natural cellulose materials (cotton, hemp) by the radio-frequency argon plasma. We have observed an increase of the sound absorption coefficient due to the plasma treatment for certain range of applied powers. An analysis of elementary processes which happened during plasma–material interaction was conducted. Additional analyses related to material characterizations were performed in order to resolve structural and chemical changes of plasma treated materials. The micro-mechanical modification of treated materials, which happened upon the retrieved structural and chemical changes, was related to the modification of its acoustical properties in order to explain the observed effect. AB - In this work, thermal diffusivity of crystalline high-density polyethylene samples of various thickness, and prepared using different procedures, was evaluated by transmission gas-microphone frequency photoacoustics. The samples composition analysis and their degree of crystallinity were determined from the wide-angle X-ray diffraction, which confirmed that high-density polyethylene samples, obtained by slow and fast cooling, were equivalent in composition but with different degrees of crystallinity. Structural analysis, performed by differential scanning calorimetry, demonstrated that all of the used samples had different levels of crystallinity, depending not only on the preparing procedure, but also on sample thickness. Therefore, in order to evaluate the samples thermal diffusivity, it was necessary to modify standard photoacoustic fitting procedures (based on the normalization of photoacoustic amplitude and phase characteristics on two thickness levels) for the interpretation of photoacoustic measurements. The calculated values of thermal diffusivity were in the range of the expected literature values. Besides that, the obtained results indicate the unexpected correlation between the values of thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity with the degree of crystallinity of the investigated geometrically thin samples. The results indicate the necessity of additional investigation of energy transport in macromolecular systems, as well as the possible employment of the photoacoustic techniques in order to clarify its mechanism.

AB - In this paper, the models of surface temperature variations have been derived. Based on these models, photoacoustic (PA) response has been commented for transmission PA setup configurations of two-layer optically transparent samples, including the impact of finite heat propagation velocity through both layers (thermal memory) and the existence of volume absorption in both layers. By analyzing the derived model it has been shown that many parameters influence the photoacoustic response. Based on the derived model, some approximations have been discussed in order to enable the development of more accurate inverse solutions of photoacoustic problem, and the estimation of optical, thermal and other related physical properties of versatile materials. By using specific two-layer structure that consist of aluminum sample coated with layer of color dye, used in some photoacoustic experimental investigations, the influence of thermal memory properties of either the sample or the coating has been discussed. © 2018, Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.

AB - We consider the slow highly charged ions impinging upon a metal surface covered with a thin dielectric film, and formation of the surface nanostructures (craters) from the standpoint of the required energy. For the moderate ionic velocities, the size of the surface features depends on the deposited kinetic energy of the projectile and the ionic neutralization energy. The neutralization energy is calculated by employing the recently developed quasi-resonant two-state vector model for the intermediate Rydberg state population and the micro-staircase model for the cascade neutralization. The electron interactions with the ionic core, polarized dielectric and charge induced on the metal surface are modelled by the appropriate asymptotic expressions and the method for calculation of the effective ionic charges in the dielectric is proposed. The results are presented for the interaction of XeZ+ ions (velocity v = 0.25 a.u.; 25 LT Z LT 45) with the metal surface (Co) covered with a thin dielectric film, for model values of dielectric constant inside the interaction region. In the absence of dielectric film, the neutralization energy is lower than the potential (ionization) energy due to the incomplete neutralization. The presence of dielectric film additionally decreases the neutralization energy. We calculate the projectile neutralization energy in the perturbed dielectric (perturbation is caused by the ionic motion and the surface structure formation). We correlate the neutralization energy added to the deposited kinetic energy with the experimentally obtained energy necessary for the formation of the nano-crater of a given depth.

AB - In this paper we have presented a theoretical investigation of the channeling of 1 GeV protons with the radial deformed (10, 0) single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). We have calculated channeling potential within the deformed nanotubes. For the first time we presented theoretically obtained spatial and. angular distributions of channeled protons with radially deformed SWNT. We used a Monte Carlo (MC) simulation technique. We show that the spatial and angular distributions depend strongly of level of radial deformation of nanotube. These results may be useful for nanotube characterization and production and guiding of nanosized ion beams. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - A minimum volume photoacoustic (PA) cell, employed as an acoustic resonator, is presented. A model of the PA cell transfer function, as a combination of two Helmholtz resonators, is derived. Frequency PA response is described as the product of theoretically derived pressure variation and the transfer function of the PA cell. The derived model is applied to the frequency PA measurements, performed on laser-sintered polyamide. It is shown that the derived model explains the occurrence of resonant peaks in the high-frequency domain ( GT 10 kHz), in both amplitude and phase measurements, obtained by a gas-microphone minimal volume PA cell. The implementation of the model in the growing possibilities of sample characterization using gas-microphone PA cell is discussed.

AB - We consider the population dynamics of the intermediate Rydberg states of highly charged ions (core charge Z GT GT 1, principal quantum number n(A) GT GT 1) interacting with solid surfaces at arbitrary collision geometry. The recently developed resonant two-state vector model for the grazing incidence (2012 J. Phys. B: At. Mol. Opt. Phys. 45 215202) is extended to the quasi-resonant case and arbitrary angle of incidence. According to the model, the population probabilities depend both on the projectile parallel and perpendicular velocity components, in a complementary way. A cascade neutralization process for XeZ+ ions, for Z = 15-45, interacting with a conductive-surface is considered by taking into account the population dynamics. For an arbitrary collision geometry and given range of ionic velocities, a micro-staircase model for the simultaneous calculation of the kinetic energy gain and the charge state of the ion in front of the surface is proposed. The relevance of the obtained results for the explanation of the formation of nanostructures on solid surfaces by slow highly charged ions for normal incidence geometry is briefly discussed.

AB - Methods for photoacoustic signal measurement, rectification, and analysis for 85 mu m thin Si samples in the 20-20 000 Hz modulation frequency range are presented. Methods for frequency-dependent amplitude and phase signal rectification in the presence of coherent and incoherent noise as well as distortion due to microphone characteristics are presented. Signal correction is accomplished using inverse system response functions deduced by comparing real to ideal signals for a sample with well-known bulk parameters and dimensions. The system response is a piece-wise construction, each component being due to a particular effect of the measurement system. Heat transfer and elastic effects are modeled using standard Rosencweig-Gersho and elastic-bending theories. Thermal diffusion, thermoelastic, and plasmaelastic signal components are calculated and compared to measurements. The differences between theory and experiment are used to detect and correct signal distortion and to determine detector and sound-card characteristics. Corrected signal analysis is found to faithfully reflect known sample parameters. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

AB - The open-cell photoacoustic signal measured in the transmission configuration for aluminum thin plates with thicknesses of 280 mu m, 197 mu m, and 112 mu m is experimentally and theoretically analyzed, in the 20 Hz-7 kHz modulation frequency range. It is shown that the observed differences between the predictions of the standard thermoelastic model and the experiment data of both the amplitude and phase of the photoacoustic signal can be overcome by considering the aluminum samples coated with a thin layer of black paint as volume-absorber materials. This new approach provides a quite good agreement with the obtained experimental data, in the whole frequency range, and yields an effective absorption coefficient of (16 +/- 2) mm(-1), for a 280 mu m-thick sample. The introduction of the finite absorption coefficient led to the correct ratio between the thermal diffusion and thermoelastic components of the photoacoustic signal. Furthermore, it is found that the volume-absorber approach accurately describes the behavior of the amplitude, but not that of the phase recorded for a 112 mu m-thick sample, due to its relatively strong thermoelastic bending, which is not considered by this theory. Within the approximation of the small bending, the proposed volume-absorber model provides a reliable description of the photoacoustic signal for Al samples thicker than 112 mu m, and extends the applicability of the classical opaque approach.
