AB - In this paper, a methodology for the application of neural networks in phase-match calibration of gas–microphone photoacoustics in frequency domain is developed. A two-layer deep neural network is used to determine, in real-time, reliably and accurately, the phase transfer function of the used microphone, applying the photoacoustic response of aluminum as reference material. This transfer function was used to correct the photoacoustic response of laser-sintered polyamide and to compare it with theoretical predictions. The obtained degree of correlation of the corrected and theoretical signal tells us that our method of phase-match calibration in photoacoustics can be generalized to a photoacoustic response coming from a solid sample made of different materials.

AB - In this article, a method for determination of photoacoustic detector transfer function as an accurate representation of microphone frequency response is presented. The method is based on supervised machine learning techniques, classification and regression, performed by two artificial neural networks. The transfer function is obtained by determining the microphone type and characteristic parameters closely related to its filtering properties. This knowledge is crucial within the signal correction procedure. The method is carefully designed in order to maintain requirements of photoacoustic experiment accuracy, reliability and real-time performance. The networks training is performed using large base of theoretical signals simulating frequency response of three types of commercial electret microphones frequently used in photoacoustic measurements extended with possible flat response of the so-called ideal microphone. The method test is performed with simulated and experimental signals assuming the usage of open-cell photoacoustic set-up. Experimental testing leads to the microphone transfer function determination used to correct the experimental signals, targeting the “true” undistorted photoacoustic response which can be further used in material characterization process.

AB - Background: Obesity and micronutrient deficiencies contribute to the risk of cardiometabolic diseases such are type 2 diabetes mellitus and Cardiovascular Disease (CVD). Objective: We examined the frequency of concomitant deficit of Magnesium (Mg) and vitamin D in obese patients and evaluated the connection of these combined deficiencies with indicators of cardiometabolic risk in non-diabetic subjects. Methods: Non-diabetic middle aged adults (n = 80; mean age 36 +/- 4 years, 52% women) were recruited based on weight/adiposity parameters {[}i.e. Body Mass Index (BMI) and body fat percentage (FAT%)]. Cardiometabolic risk indicators {[}insulin resistance (Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR)) and CVD risk (Framingham risk score for predicting 10-year CVD)], Mg status (i.e. total serum Mg concentration (TMg), Chronic Latent Mg Deficiency (CLMD) -0.75-0.85 mmol/L), vitamin D status (i.e. serum concentration of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH) D), vitamin D deficiency < 50 nmol/l) were assessed. Results: Among obese subjects 36% presented a combination of vitamin D deficiency and CLMD. In all studied patients, 25(OH) D and TMg levels both, individually and combined, showed a negative linear correlation with HOMA-IR and CVD risk. In subjects with CLMD (TMg < 0.85 mmol/L), a negative linear coefficient was found between 25(OH) D and, HOMA-IR and CVD risk, compared with subjects with normal TMg status (TMg >= 0.85 mmol/L). Conclusion: CLMD and vitamin D deficiency may commonly be present in obese non-diabetic subjects. Individually and combined, both deficiencies predispose non-diabetic patients to increased risk of cardiometabolic diseases. Maintaining normal Mg status may improve the beneficial effects of vitamin D on cardiometabolic risk indicators.

AB - Vitamin D deficiency and dysfunctional adipose tissue are involved in the development of cardiometabolic disturbances (eg, hypertension, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity, and dyslipidemia). We studied 50 obese (body mass index [BMI]: 43.5 ± 9.2 kg/m2 ) and 36 normal weight participants (BMI: 22.6 ± 1.9 kg/m2 ). Obese individuals were classified into different subgroups according to medians of observed anthropometric parameters (BMI, body fat percentage, waist circumference, and trunk fat mass). The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency (25-hydroxyvitamin D, 25 (OH)D < 50 nmol/L) was 88% among obese patients and 31% among nonobese individuals; 25(OH)D were lower in the obese group (27.3 ± 13.7 vs 64.6 ± 21.3 nmol/L, p < .001). There was a negative correlation between vitamin D and anthropometric indicators of obesity: BMI: (r = - 0.64, p < .001), waist circumference (r = -0.59; p < .001), and body fat percentage (r = -0.64; p < .001) as well with fasting plasma insulin (r = -0.35; p < .001) and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (r = - 0.35; p < .001). There was a negative correlation between vitamin D level and leptin and resistin (r = -.61; p < .01), while a positive association with adiponectin concentrations were found (r = .7; p < .001). Trend estimation showed that increase in vitamin D level is accompanied by intensive increase in adiponectin concentrations (growth coefficient: 12.13). In conclusion, we observed a higher prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among obese participants and this was associated with a proatherogenic cardiometabolic risk profile. In contrast, a positive trend was established between vitamin D and the protective adipocytokine adiponectin. The clinical relevance of this relationship needs to be investigated in larger studies.

AB - For the first time, particle shape analysis of silica coated iron oxide (maghemite/magnetite) nanoparticle clusters (core-shell nanostructures) is discussed using computational methods. We analyzed three samples of core-shell nanostructures synthesized with different thickness of the silica shell. A new computational method is presented and successfully applied to the segmentation of the core-shell nanoparticles, as one of the main problems in image analysis of the TEM micrographs. We have introduced the circularity coefficient, marked with k(circ) and defined as the ratio of circularity measure C-2(S) of nanoparticles core and circularity measure core-shell nanoparticles in order to answer the question how the shell affects the overall shape of the final core-shell structure, with respect to circularity. More precisely, the circularity coefficient determines whether the circularity of the core-shell nanoparticle is higher, lower or equal to the circularity of the core. We have also determined the shells share in the overall area of the core-shell nanoparticle. The core-shell nanoparticle clusters here investigated exhibit superparamagnetic properties at room temperature, thus emphasizing their potential for use in practical applications such as in biomedical and particle separation. We show that the saturation magnetization strength can be easily adjusted by controlling the thickness of the silica shell. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

AB - We propose using a new circularity measure, and an ellipticity measure. Observing an example of hematite (alpha-Fe2O3) nanoparticles, we compared and discussed a new circularity measure, with a standard measure. It has been shown that using the new measure gives better results when working with low-quality images or with low-resolution images. Using the same images modified ellipticity measure has also been discussed. We have analyzed the problems arising from computing the elongation of a shape. We have shown that the standard approach to compute elongation is not appropriate for some particles. We presented the application of the modified approach to solve this problem. AB - Vitamin D deficiency and dysfunctional adipose tissue are involved in the development of cardiometabolic disturbances (eg, hypertension, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity, and dyslipidemia). We evaluated the relation between vitamin D and adipocytokines derived from adipose tissue. We studied 50 obese individuals who were classified into different subgroups according to medians of observed anthropometric parameters (body mass index, body fat percentage, waist circumference, and trunk fat mass). There was a negative correlation between vitamin D level and leptin and resistin (r = -.61, P LT .01), while a positive association with adiponectin concentrations was found (r = .7, P LT .001). Trend estimation showed that increase in vitamin D level is accompanied by intensive increase in adiponectin concentrations (growth coefficient: 12.13). In conclusion, a positive trend was established between vitamin D and the protective adipocytokine adiponectin. The clinical relevance of this relationship needs to be investigated in larger studies.

AB - Vitamin D deficiency is associated with cardiometabolic risk factors (eg, hypertension, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity, and dyslipidemia). We studied 50 obese patients (body mass index [BMI]: 43.5 +/- 9.2 kg/m(2)) and 36 normal weight participants (BMI: 22.6 +/- 1.9 kg/m(2)). The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency (25-hydroxyvitamin D, 25(OH)D LT 50 nmol/L) was 88% among obese patients and 31% among nonobese individuals; 25(OH)D levels were lower in the obese group (27.3 +/- 13.7 vs 64.6 +/- 21.3 nmol/L; P LT .001). There was a negative correlation between vitamin D level and anthropometric indicators of obesity: BMI (r = -0.64; P LT .001), waist circumference (r = -0.59; P LT .001), and body fat percentage (r = -0.64; P LT .001) as well as with fasting plasma insulin (r = -0.35; P LT .001) and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (r = -0.35; P LT .001). In conclusion, we observed a higher prevalence of vitamin D deficiency among obese participants and this was associated with a proatherogenic cardiometabolic risk profile.
