AB - Acute B. canis infection can lead to an acute phase reaction (APR) in dogs. The parasite invades red blood cells causinganemia through immune-mediated hemolysis and possible erythropoietic suppression. A regenerative response of theerythroid lineage during the babesiosis has not been described in extension. This research examines hematologic parametersfocusing on the absolute reticulocyte count and apolipoprotein A I (ApoA I) level on the day of admission and 14 days aftertreatment with imidocarb-dipropionate in young (n=11) and adult (n=11) dogs naturally infected with B. canis. Metabolicand inflammatory processes were characterized by analyzing protein and lipid profiles, as well as ApoA I at specified timepoints. Automated analyzers were used to determine complete blood count and biochemical parameters, while ApoA I wasassessed using radioimmunoassay. The reticulocyte count was determined using a manual method by means of supravitalstaining. Both young and adult dogs with acute B. canis infection showed non-regenerative anemia without difference.Fourteen days after successful treatment with imidocarb-dipropionate, the anemia was corrected and a high reticulocytecount was observed (p<0.05). This indicates that the erythroid regenerative response was efficient in young and adult dogs, although vital signs, leukocyte count and triglyceride concentration suggest a more intense APR in young dogs. A decreasein ApoA I in both groups 14 days after treatment (p<0.01) confirmed that this lipoprotein acts as a positive acute-phaseprotein in acute B. canis infection in dogs, but further studies are needed to connect its role in erythroid lineage regeneration.

AB - Homocysteine (Hcy) was investigated as the biomarker of cardiac, renal, and gastrointestinal disordersin dogs. Data about low Hcy concentrations in the systemic inflammatory response syndrome raised a hypothesis thatHcy in dogs could be a negative acute-phase reactant. This survey compared Hcy concentrations, serum amyloid A(SAA), and the routine laboratory parameters between healthy (HD, N=6) and dogs with inflammation of differentextent: mild (dirofilariosis (DIR), N=31), moderate (babesiosis (BAB), N=12), and severe (pyometra (PYO), N=8).The BAB and PYO groups had lower Hcy er than HD. Also, the levels in the PYO group were below those in theDIRO group. SAA had the inverse pattern. Across the groups, Hcy and SAA levels correlated negatively (ρ = -0.502,P<0.001). Hcy and SAA correlated with the erythrocyte count, hematocrit, hemoglobin and mean cellular hemoglobinconcentrations, and neutrophil count, with correlations being positive for Hcy and negative for SAA. Among all dogs, hemoglobin was the only independent predictor of Hcy concentration. Hcy levels in canine infections, decreased asacute-phase reaction (APR) intensified. Also, they were related with the hematology changes accompanying the APR.Further studies will establish the clinical potential of these alterations.

AB - Bacterial infections and resistance to antibiotics are increasingly severe problems. In recent years, Staphylococcus species have emerged as important pathogens in animals and humans. Current therapeutic methods against these species have serious disadvantages; therefore new agents with antibacterial potential, such as plant-based substances, are very important in therapy. We report a pilot study with new method of fractioning the dehydrogenate polymer DHP obtained from coniferyl alcohol and application of the low-MW fractions of 200–3000 Da for antibacterial activity in healing animal lesions. In vivo experiments were conducted on the dogs having a skin lesion. Dogs were treated with the suspension containing the low-MW DHP fractions as the active ingredient, in combination with alginate for 7 days. Cytological smears and microbiological analyses of the affected area were performed. Staphylococcus spp. was isolated from lesions in all dogs from our research. The results show that the low-MW DHP suspension in alginate promotes skin healing and reduction of the infection of the lesions in the affected animals. Pharmaceutical composition containing the low-MW DHP fractions exerts a soothing effect on the subject in wound treatment. Reduction in the number of bacteria by 30% and more were noticed in 6 dogs, while in 4 dogs this percentage is above 50%. No side effects were noticed. Synthesized lignin oligomers may have a significant place as antimicrobial and skin healing agents, especially since an increasing number of multidrug-resistant staphylococci are found on the skin lesions in animals.

AB - This research analyzes the fractal nature of the beryllium-7 specific activity time series in the near-surface layer of the atmosphere in Belgrade, Serbia. The aim was to study the dynamics of self-similarity in this series, with a particular focus on the annual cycle. Wavelet analysis and time-dependent detrended moving averages were used to identify characteristic intervals and estimate Hurst exponents. The data on specific activity of beryllium-7 were obtained from the GRAMON database for the location of Belgrade (44.88 °N; 20.58 °E; 95 m a.s.l.). The time series comprises 362 monthly measurements between February 1991 and December 2022. The results indicate a pronounced annual cycle in this time series. Moreover, changes in the local Hurst exponent reveal variations in the behavior of the time series, transitioning from moderately correlated to highly anti-correlated process between 2015. and 2020. This finding will be a subject of a further analysis including other locations from the GRAMON database.

AB - This paper presents a recently established Ground Air Radioactivity Monitoring (GRAMON) database that contains the results of radioactivity measurements in the air at seven locations: Belgrade (Serbia), Ljubljana and Krško (Slovenia), Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Podgorica (Montenegro), Skopje and Bitola (North Macedonia). Monthly values of specific activity of the natural radionuclide beryllium-7 were selected from the database and descriptive statistical parameters were analyzed for each location from January 2010 to December 2019. The mean values of the specific activity of beryllium-7 over this period range from 3.32 mBq/m3 in Sarajevo to 5.93 mBq/m3 in Belgrade. The coefficient of variation is the least for Krško (37.7%) and Sarajevo (38.6%), and the largest for Belgrade (54.8%) and Bitola (72.4%). Still, the 3σ-intervals of all seven time series overlap. Further statistical analysis will investigate whether there are any significant differences among these time series.

abstract = "U radu je predstavljena novoformirana baza podataka GRAMON (Ground Air Radioactivity Monitoring) koja sadrži rezultate merenja radioaktivnosti u vazduhu na sedam lokacija: Beograd (Srbija), Ljubljana i Krško (Slovenija), Sarajevo (Bosna i Hercegovina), Podgorica (Crna Gora), Skoplje i Bitola (Severna Makedonija). AB - A number of alterations have been identified in lipid metabolism within adipose tissue and liver in obesity. Less is known about the capacity of skeletal muscle for the metabolism of fatty acids in obesity-related insulin resistance, though it is evident that dry cow muscles may contain increased triglyceride content. The current study was therefore undertaken to evaluate the skeletal muscle expression of proteins of the fatty acid metabolism in dry cows with different body condition scores (BCS). Sixteen Holstein-Friesian close-up cows were divided into 2 equal groups based on their BCS as optimal (3.25 ≤ BCS ≤ 3.5) and high (4.0 ≤ BCS ≤ 4.25). Blood samples collection and skeletal muscle biopsies were carried out at day 10 before calving. Blood serum was assayed for concentration of resistin using a bovine specific ELISA. Protein expression of insulin receptor beta subunit (IRβ), glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4), fatty acid translocase (FAT/CD36), fatty acid transporter 1 (FATP1), carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1 (CPT1), AMP-acitvated protein kinase (AMPK) and lipin 1 were analyzed in semitendinosus muscle by immunoblot. Resistin differed non-significantly between high-BCS and optimal-BCS cows. Insulin-resistant lipid metabolism in obese cows was paralleled with increased skeletal muscle expression of lipin 1 and GLUT4, and decreased expression of IRβ and FATP1. These data suggest that in obesity-related insulin resistance, metabolic capacity in dry cow skeletal muscles appears to be organized towards the synthesis of signaling intermediates rather than fatty acids oxidation and that altered fatty acid uptake does not contribute to this disposition.

AB - The objective of this work was to assess absorbed doses in organs and tissues of a rabbit, following computed tomography (CT) examinations, using a dedicated 3D voxel model. Absorbed doses in relevant organs were calculated using the MCNP5 Monte Carlo software. Calculations were perfomed for two standard CT protocols, using tube voltages of 110 kVp and 130 kVp. Absorbed doses were calculated in 11 organs and tissues, i.e., skin, bones, brain, muscles, heart, lungs, liver, spleen, kidney, testicles, and fat tissue. The doses ranged from 15.3 to 28.3 mGy, and from 40.2 to 74.3 mGy, in the two investigated protocols. The organs that received the highest dose were bones and kidneys. In contrast, brain and spleen were organs that received the smallest doses. Doses in organs which are stretched along the body did not change significantly with distance. On the other hand, doses in organs which are localized in the body showed maximums and minimums. Using the voxel model, it is possible to calculate the dose distribution in the rabbit’s body after CT scans, and study the potential biological effects of CT doses in certain organs. The voxel model presented in this work can be used to calculated doses in all radiation experiments in which rabbits are used as experimental animals.

AB - This study investigates the beryllium-7, lead-210 and caesium-137 activity concentrations in aerosol filter samples collected monthly along the 45°N zonal belt over 1991–2019. Sampling was performed in three locations, one in Serbia and two in Slovenia, and the Slovenian data records are published here for the first time. The activity concentrations were determined by standard gamma spectrometry. The obtained results are in general agreement with the literature data for Europe. The data sets at different sites display similarities in measurement ranges, overall means and seasonal cycles. Still, statistical tests show significant differences among the radionuclides’ concentrations across the locations. To investigate underlying processes that affect radioactivity in the surface air in this region, multivariate statistical concepts are applied to the radionuclides’ concentrations and local meteorological parameters. Discriminant analysis shows that all three sites are well separated from each other. Principal component analysis gives common pattern of interconnection between the observables: temperature has a stronger influence on the behaviour of beryllium-7 and lead-210 than that of caesium-137, but a negative correlation of the radionuclides’ concentrations with precipitation seems the strongest for caesium-137. Principal component analysis also shows local differences in the degree of relationship between the meteorological parameters and activity concentrations of the investigated radionuclides. This is an important finding for future atmospheric transport studies.
