AB - In order to clarify relationship between apricot kernel shell biomass slow pyrolysis mechanism and its main constituents (viz. hemicelluloses, cellulose and lignin), the reactivity effects of main constituents on pyrolysis characteristics were determined by the non-isothermal simultaneous thermal analysis. It was found that four-step (parallel) reaction model is suitable for studying the slow pyrolysis process, within the semi-global model which excludes the strong interaction between biomass constituents (pseudo-components). The application of the proposed model was allowed by the results obtained from KAS iterative isoconversional (model-free) approach. The valorization of the model was confirmed by the process optimization. The complex (cumulative) apricot kernel shell pyrolysis rate curves at different heating rates are successfully resolved into the individual decomposition rate curves (arising from thermal conversion of hemicelluloses, cellulose, and primary/secondary lignin fragments) by four-parameter Fraser–Suzuki function. Besides hemicelluloses and cellulose pyrolyses, the proposed model distinguishes primary and secondary lignin reactions, which enhance the gaseous products releasing (primarily CO and CO2 gases) and charification of the solid residue (increased the bio-char yield). © 2020, Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, Hungary.

AB - According to the Serbian official soil classification system, Rendzina is a soil type with an A-AC-C-R profile, developed on parent rock containing more than 20% of calcareous material (except soils with an A-R profile on hard pure limestone or dolomite). Previous investigations have shown that 29 Rendzina soil profiles from Serbia belong to the reference soil groups (RSGs) of Leptosols, Regosols and Phaeozems according to the World Reference Base for Soil Resources (WRB 2015). The present study addresses the correlations among three WRB RSGs in terms of soil texture, mean weight diameter (MWD), total N content, and humus fractional composition using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The objective is to better understand the mutual relationship between the classification soil units used in Serbia and the international WRB system. The results show that PCA cannot unequivocally distinguish between these three RSGs. Leptosols and Regosols are highly incoherent groups while the group of Phaeozems is highly coherent, leading to the conclusion that the physical and chemical properties of the soil profiles of Phaoeozems are specific. It is obvious that soil depth and color, which are the overriding factors in the differentiation of Rendzina soils into three WRB RSGs, had no significant effect on these properties. The results further show that soil properties such as texture, MWD, humus fractional composition, etc. cannot be used to correlate Rendzina soils from Serbia with WRB. Instead, careful correlation of individual soil profiles is needed based on quantitative soil data analysis as required by WRB.

AB - Macroporous silica ceramic was obtained using clay and diatomite. Boric acid as a low-cost additive in the amount of 1 wt% was used. These porous materials were obtained at low forming pressure (40-80 MPa) and lower sintering temperature (850-1300 ºC) for 4h in air. The influence of boric acid, forming pressure, and sintering temperature on the microstructure, porosity parameters, and mechanical properties of obtained porous monoliths were investigated. As-received and the modified samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, FTIR, SEM, and mercury porosimetry measurements. As for modified clay and diatomite, they were pressed at 60 MPa and then sintered at 1150 ºC, obtaining porosities of about 10 % and 60 %, respectively. Both of the analyzed samples had the pore diameter in the range of macroporous materials. The pore diameters of clay samples are ranging from 0.1-10 μm, whereas the pore diameter of diatomite samples was slightly lower with values ranging from 0.05-5 μm. Modified diatomite samples have a lower Young modulus in comparison to modified clay samples.

AB - The purpose of this study is to investigate and quantify the influence of nanoparticle composition, size, and concentration on the difference between dose enhancement values derived from Monte Carlo simulations with homogeneous and structured geometrical representations of the target region in metal nanoparticle-enhanced photon brachytherapy. Values of the dose enhancement factor (DEF) were calculated for Pd-103, I-125, and Cs-131 brachytherapy sources with gold, silver, or platinum nanoparticles acting as targeting agents. Simulations were performed using the Geant4 toolkit with condensed history models of electron transport. Stringent limits were imposed on adjustable parameters that define secondary electron histories, so that simulations came closest to true event-by-event electron tracking, thereby allowing part of the nanoparticle-laden volume used for calculating the dose to be represented as a structured region with uniformly distributed discrete nanoparticles. Fine-tuned physical models of secondary radiation emission and propagation, along with the discrete geometrical representation of nanoparticles, result in a more realistic assessment of dose enhancement. The DEF correction coefficient is introduced as a metric that quantifies the absorption of secondary radiation inside the nanoparticles themselves, a phenomenon disregarded when the target region is treated as a homogeneous metal–tissue mixture, but accounted for by discrete nanoparticle representation. The approach applied to correcting DEF values both draws from and expands upon several related investigations published previously. Comparison of the obtained results to those found in relevant references shows both agreement and deviation, depending on nanoparticle properties and photon energy. © 2020, China Science Publishing & Media Ltd. AB - Organic contaminants from building materials negatively affect the health of people. This study presents an analytical method for the simultaneous identification and quantification of 9 phenolic compounds, i.e., phenol, 2-chloro-phenol, 2,4-dimethylphenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, 2,6-dichlorophenol, 4-chloro-3-methylphenol, 2,4,6-trichlorophenol, 2,3,4,6-tetrahlorophenol and pentachlorophenol, in concrete by a gas chromatographic method with mass spectrometric detection (GC–MS). By comparing the MS spectra of the test compounds with MS spectra of analytical standards, reliable identification was achieved. The method could be applied in a given range (from 0.01 to 7.5 mg kg -1 ) with appropriate parameters of precision, accuracy, repeatability and linearity. The developed method could be used for quality control testing of phenols in concrete during the construction of new buildings, old residences and construction waste. The measurement uncertainty of the phenolic compounds in concrete was evaluated using two approaches, i.e., GUM recommendations and a Monte Carlo method. Disagreement of those methods was observed. The Monte Carlo method could be used in the evaluation of combined measurement uncertainty for the determination of phenolic compounds in concrete. © 2019 Serbian Chemical Society. AB - Polyphenols present in different plant cell organelles increase the resistance of plants to various types of environmental stresses. We investigated the possibility of increasing the content of bioactive compounds in the seed of yellow soybean variety Laura. The soybean was treated during vegetation with five products based on plant extracts, on the assumption of enrichment of plants with various nutrients. Soybean flour extracts were screened spectrophotometrically for total phenolic content and antioxidant activity. The antioxidant activity was evaluated using three methods. The content of phenolic acids was determined by HPLC, and the raw protein content was estimated by the Kjeldahl method. Depending on the treatment, variations in the quantity of individual phenolic acids with up to 90% higher concentration as compared to the control were observed. Controlled usage of certain plant extracts can increase the concentration of the target group of bioactive compounds in the samples. The synergistic effect of proteins and phenolic compounds on the antioxidant activity of extracts was detected. The results of this study are not only important from the aspect of plant resistance to various types of stress, but also when considering soybean as a functional food. © 2019 by the Serbian Biological Society.

abstract = "Polyphenols present in different plant cell organelles increase the resistance of plants to various types of environmental stresses. AB - The estimation of uncertainty measurement using different approaches is increasingly applied to assess the reliability of results generated by applied analytical methods. This paper presents the Monte Carlo simulation model (MCS) for calculating the uncertainty of the measurement associated with the result of the analysis. The results of MCS were compared with the commonly used a standard method (GUM). The calculations of the measurement uncertainty were demonstrated in the case of the determination of 2,4-dimethylphenol by gas chromatography in concrete samples.

AB - Titanium-dioxide nanostructures and thin films are interesting for application in environmental protection, for water and air purification from toxic compounds, and photocatalytic degradation of water, where separation of H2 is important for the development of new energy sources. Furthermore, they are interesting for fabrication of solar cells, various sensor applications, transparent conducting oxides (TCO), etc [1-3]. Stoichiometric TiO2 phase has a wide optoelectronic band gap of ~3.2 eV, which makes it a dielectric at lower temperatures and a semiconductor at higher temperatures. It has a high absorption coefficient in the range of UV radiation, but low in the visible light region, and this makes significant constrains for its usage as a photocatalyst. For reducing energy gap, better absorption in visible light region and more efficient application it is necessary to add doping material species, which can be metal or non-metal ions. When used as a photocatalyst in form of a powder, TiO2 nanoparticles are embedded in photosensitizing dyes which absorb visible light, or they are partly covered with nanoparticles of some transition metal to enhance injection of charge carriers. Recent developments involve the use of physical vapor deposition (vacuum evaporation or ion sputtering) to synthesize TiO2 thin film structures, and ion implantation for their doping. The advantage of using physical vapor deposition is that the Ti:O ratio can be varied, and the films can be deposited on any supporting or large area substrates. On the other hand, ion implantation is a proven technique for introducing dopant atomic species into the crystal lattice of semiconductor materials. In these experiments TiO2 thin films were synthesized by physical vapor deposition (PVD) method, using three different procedures: (i) reactive d.c. ion sputtering of pure Ti target, using Ar ions and introducing O2 in the deposition chamber; (ii) r.f. sputtering of TiO2 target, using Ar + O2 gas mixture; and (iii) reactive e-beam evaporation of pure Ti in the presence of introduced O2 . In case of reactive d.c. ion sputtering additional experiments involved a controlled introduction of nitrogen in the interaction chamber, which yielded doping of the deposited TiO2 thin films, in reducing their band gap and enhancing absorption of visible light. The films were deposited to a thickness of a few hundred nm on silicon wafers and glass slide substrates. Structural and compositional characterization of samples included X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM, HRTEM), Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Optical characterizations were done by measuringthe transmission and diffuse reflection UV/VIS spectra. Photocatalytic activity was measured by determining the photodegradation rate of organic solutions Structural characterization revealed that as-deposited samples grow in form of a mixture of very fine nanocrystalline grains of rutile and anatase TiO2 phases and TiO. Hence, in order to homogenize the TiO2 stoichiometry andinduce the growth of larger grains it was necessary to anneal the samples in air, at temperatures of 400 and 600 o C [4]. This procedure was performed on all samples after deposition. Bright-field cross-sectional images taken from two different TiO2 films deposited on Si wafers are shown in Fig. 1. Sharp contrast regions within the films indicate their polycrystalline structure. The results of investigations showed that it is possible to tailor the structure and properties of the obtained TiO2 thin films by adjusting the processing parameters.

AB - Among numerous existing and developing techniques for the detection of air pollution, laser-based optical methods (LBM) are possibly the most promising ones. Unique sensing capabilities of LBM include high speed of analysis, high selectivity, sensitivity and accuracy, low detection limits, and remote detection. This paper gives a brief review of several laser-based systems for optical sensing of gas-phase chemical agents: laser intra-cavity, photoacoustic and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, and remote sensing based on differential absorption. For each method, a brief description of the principles of operation is given, and its analytical capabilities are outlined.

AB - The aim of this study was to examine the influence of cavitation erosion on the morphology of defects formed on the surfaces of alumina-based materials. The alumina-based samples were exposed to cavitation erosion for 42 min. The damages that occurred were monitored at predefined time intervals by measuring the mass loss and observing the sample surfaces. Digital images of surfaces were processed using an image analysis software package to define morphological characteristics of the damages occurred. The calculated morphological parameters were subjected to analysis by pattern recognition techniques to correlate the appearance of particular morphological characteristics with the behavior of the material during cavitation erosion. The newly established method in describing cavitation erosion which uses pattern recognition approach for treatments of morphological parameters calculated for damages by image analysis tools gave the results efficient for material characterization as the traditional one. © 2018 Elsevier Inc.

AB - The chemical and mineralogical composition of ceramic bodies, glazes and pigments, as well as the firing temperatures of main groups of Austrian period painted pottery excavated at the Belgrade Fortress on the territory of Serbia, two groups of Malhornware and one group of Anabaptist faience, were determined by a combination of powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and micro-Raman spectroscopy. Investigated pottery was uncovered in the same archaeological context and dated the end of 17th/first decade of 18th century. The obtained mineralogical and chemical composition shows the similarities between the Malhornware groups that indicate a similar production technology. Use of calcareous clay fired at temperatures in the range 850-900 degrees C indicates a different production technology for the Anabaptists faience. The compositional data treatment by multivariate statistical analysis reveals heterogeneity in the Anabaptist faience group of samples, suggesting potential interactions between the local potters and the Anabaptist communities. AB - 24-epibrassinolide (24-EBL) is plant steroid hormone that can regulate several physiological effects in plants, including promotion of cell growth and induction of heat stress tolerance. The purpose of this work is to investigate the influence of various concentrations of 24-EBL on the dehydration mechanism of seedlings of two maize hybrids (ZP434 and ZP704). Control and treated samples were subjected to isothermal conditions for dehydration processes. The effects of carbohydrates and mineral contents on the possible changes in the dehydration mechanism (from kinetics standpoint) were investigated. Comparing control samples to samples treated with 24-EBL, it was found that different dehydration mechanisms exist. The differences arise from the influence of 24-EBL, that causes a significant increase of phosphorus values for ZP704, whilst the reverse was identified for ZP434. It was assumed that the plumule sensitivity to dehydration stress originates from the interaction of water with primary amino groups as cations in polyamines, for lower concentrations of 24-EBL. It was found that the temperature variation (105–130 °C) leads to situations where trehalose does not arrive fast enough to “replace the water” because its handicap to binds (by hydrogen bonds) to biomolecules instead of water. It was found that 24-EBL cause changes of carbohydrates properties, which are important for the defense mechanism from environmental stresses. © 2018 SAAB

AB - The Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) and Regulations on Technical Requirements for Designing, Manufacturing and Conformity Assessment of Pressure Equipment bring a number of changes to the design of pressure equipment in relation to the Technical Regulations for Stable Pressure Vessels, 1983. Among the most important changes are the essential safety requirements for pressure equipment. The changes in the formula, for all materials, for calculating the allowable stresses, as well as the change in the value of the test pressure, the new Regulations use the 1.0% proof strength as the relevant value for calculating the permissible membrane stress and thickness of pressure equipment walls. In this paper, the differences in the allowable stresses, the required wall thicknesses, and the approximate savings in the material in the case of a milk reservoir, calculated according to the requirements of the Directive and the new Regulations on one hand, and the old Regulations on the other, are presented. © 2018 The Author.

AB - In the present study, an aluminum alloy A356 composite with addition of 5 wt% fly ash was synthesized and subjected to the cavitation erosion resistance test in order to find out if this material can be used in conditions where the cavitation erosion resistance is expected. Obtained results were compared with that of as-cast aluminum A356 alloy, confirming that composite possessed better cavitation erosion resistance than original alloy and that fly ash can be used as an effective reinforcement in metal matrix composites production. Scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy was used for microstructural analysis. Phase identification of fly ash was carried out using X-ray diffraction analysis. Several methods for monitoring the cavitation erosion resistance of A356 alloy and corresponding composite were applied, such as: mass loss (Delta m), volume loss (Delta V), level of surface degradatiom (P/Po) and pit depth.

AB - Human exposure to persistent organic contaminants, from building materials, negatively affects peoples health and overall quality of life. This paper presents the validation and uncertainty assessment of the analytical method, developed for the simultaneous determination of 16 EPA polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in solid-solid concrete by ultra-performance liquid chromatography with photo diode-array detector. Linearity of calibration curves was good over the whole range of calibration. Limits of detection varied between 0.2 and 2.9 mu gkg(-1). The accuracy in terms of recovery of the validated method is within the range from 54 to 106%. The developed method proved to be appropriate for analysis of PAHs and can be used for the quality control testing of concrete during the construction of new buildings, the old residences and related buildings associated with sick-building syndrome. In addition, this is the first reported method described for the evaluation of PAHs in solid-solid concrete. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - Synthesis of an unconventional resin based on 4-vinylpyridine (4-VP) and its Cu(II) sorption behavior were studied. Three samples of macroporous crosslinked poly(4-vinylpyridine-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) (P4VPE) with different porosity parameters were prepared by suspension copolymerization by varying the n-heptane amount in the inert component. The samples were characterized by mercury porosimetry, elemental analysis and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The sorption of P4VPE for Cu(II) ions, determined under non-competitive conditions, was relatively rapid, i.e., the maximum capacity was reached within 30 min. The maximum experimental sorption capacity for the sample with the highest values of pore diameter and specific pore volume (sample 3, Q(eq) = 89 mg g(-1)) was 17.5 times higher than for the sample with the lowest values of pore diameter and specific pore volume (sample 1, Q(eq) = 5.1 mg g(-1)). Since the values for pyridine content in all P4VPE samples were almost the same, it was concluded that the porosity parameters have predominant influence on Cu(II) sorption rates on P4VPE. The sorption behavior and the rate-controlling mechanisms were analyzed using six kinetic models (pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, Elovich, intraparticle diffusion, Bangham and Boyd models). XPS study clarified the nature of the formed P4VPE-Cu(II) species.

The sorption behavior and the rate-controlling mechanisms were analyzed using six kinetic models (pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, Elovich, intraparticle diffusion, Bangham and Boyd models). XPS study clarified the nature of the formed P4VPE-Cu(II) species.",

AB - The surface defects on alumina-based refractory arising from thermal shock were studied using image analysis and statistical tools. Alumina-based refractory specimens were prepared by adding a different amount of fibers into their original composition and compacted on different pressures. Obtained specimens were subjected to thermal shock, and induced surface defects were characterized by their morphological parameters determined using the image analysis procedure. The influence of preparation conditions on the surface defects morphology was studied using principle component analysis. It was shown that morphological parameters of defects vary corresponding to the composition and preparation conditions of ceramic material.

AB - Sorption of radioactive 99Tc-pertechnetate onto activated carbon prepared
from pinecones was investigated. The parameters of contact time and Tc-99
concentration were varied. It was established that the sorption half-life, t1/2,
was very short ~ 2.2 min, thus making this sorbent an excellent candidate
for immediate pollution remediation, which is very important in the case of
nuclear accidents. The kinetic data were found to follow closely the pseudosecond-
order (PSO) kinetic model. Boyd model established the sorption
dependence only on film diffusion. The partitioning/distribution coefficient,
Kd, attained was 2729 cm3 g-1. The equilibration time was 3 h at room
temperature (T=298 K).

AB - Hepatitis C virus infection is the most common chronic blood-borne infection and one of the most important causes of chronic liver disease. Knowing the predictors associated with pegylated interferon/ribavirin (PEG-IFN/RBV) combination therapy response is important for evidence-based treatment recommendations. The goal of this study was to identify host and viral factors of response to PEG-IFN/RBV treatment in chronic hepatitis C genotype 1b patients. We have examined the relationship between gender, age, level of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), viral load and liver fibrosis progression on therapy response. ALT level and viral load were evaluated before starting treatment with combination therapy. The elevated levels of ALT and route of HCV transmission were found to be significantly associated with the response to therapy in HCV-infected patients. Our findings may be useful for estimating a patients likelihood Of achieving sustained viral response.
