AB - The Database of Protein Disorder (DisProt, URL: https://disprot.org) provides manually curated annotations of intrinsically disordered proteins from the literature. Here we report recent developments with DisProt (version 8), including the doubling of protein entries, a new disorder ontology, improvements of the annotation format and a completely new website. The website includes a redesigned graphical interface, a better search engine, a clearer API for programmatic access and a new annotation interface that integrates text mining technologies. The new entry format provides a greater flexibility, simplifies maintenance and allows the capture of more information from the literature. The new disorder ontology has been formalized and made interoperable by adopting the OWL format, as well as its structure and term definitions have been improved. The new annotation interface has made the curation process faster and more effective. We recently showed that new DisProt annotations can be effectively used to train and validate disorder predictors. We believe the growth of DisProt will accelerate, contributing to the improvement of function and disorder predictors and therefore to illuminate the ‘dark’ proteome.

AB - The first two examples of polyoxopalladates(II) (POPs) containing tetravalent metal ion guests, [MO8Pd12(PO4)8]12- (M = SnIV, PbIV), have been prepared and structurally characterized in the solid state, solution, and gas phase. The interactions of the metal ion guests and the palladium-oxo shell were studied by theoretical calculations. The POPs were shown to possess anticancer activity by causing oxidative stress inducing caspase activation and consecutive apoptosis of leukemic cells.

AB - The t (t) over bar production cross-section dependence on jet multiplicity and jet transverse momentum is reported for proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV in the single-lepton channel. The data were collected with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider and comprise the full 2011 data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb(-1). Differential cross-sections are presented as a function of the jet multiplicity for up to eight jets using jet transverse momentum thresholds of 25, 40, 60, and 80 GeV, and as a function of jet transverse momentum up to the fifth jet. The results are shown after background subtraction and corrections for all known detector effects, within a kinematic range closely matched to the experimental acceptance. Several QCD-based Monte Carlo models are compared with the results. Sensitivity to the parton shower modelling is found at the higher jet multiplicities, at high transverse momentum of the leading jet and in the transverse momentum spectrum of the fifth leading jet. The MC"NLO+HERWIG MC is found to predict too few events at higher jet multiplicities.

AB - A measurement of the B-s(0) - GT J/psi phi decay parameters, updated to include flavor tagging is reported using 4.9 fb(-1) of integrated luminosity collected by the ATLAS detector from root s = 7 TeV pp collisions recorded in 2011 at the LHC. The values measured for the physical parameters are phi(s) = 0.12 +/- 0.25(stat) +/- 0.05(syst) rad Delta Gamma(s) = 0.053 +/- 0.021(stat) +/- 0.010(syst) ps(-1) Gamma(s) = 0.677 +/- 0.007(stat) +/- 0.004(syst) ps(-1) vertical bar A(parallel to)(0)vertical bar(2) = 0.220 +/- 0.008(stat) +/- 0.009(syst) vertical bar A(0)(0)vertical bar(2) = 0.529 +/- 0.006(stat) +/- 0.012(syst) delta(perpendicular to) = 3.89 +/- 0.47(stat) +/- 0.11(syst) rad where the parameter Delta Gamma(s) is constrained to be positive. The S-wave contribution was measured and found to be compatible with zero. Results for phi(s) and Delta Gamma(s) are also presented as 68% and 95% likelihood contours, which show agreement with the Standard Model expectations.

AB - A measurement of the mass difference between top and anti-top quarks is presented. In a 4.7 fb(-1) data sample of proton-proton collisions at root s = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the LHC, events consistent with t (t) over bar production and decay into a single charged lepton final state are reconstructed. For each event, the mass difference between the top and anti-top quark candidate is calculated. A two b-tag requirement is used in order to reduce the background contribution. A maximum likelihood fit to these per-event mass differences yields Delta m = m(t) - m((t) over bar) = 0.67 +/- 0.61 (stat) +/- 0.41 (syst) GeV, consistent with CPT invariance. (C) 2013 The Authors. AB - The process pp - GT W (+/-) J/psi provides a powerful probe of the production mechanism of charmonium in hadronic collisions, and is also sensitive to multiple parton interactions in the colliding protons. Using the 2011 ATLAS dataset of 4.5 fb(-1) of root s= 7 TeV pp collisions at the LHC, the first observation is made of the production of W (+/-) + prompt J/psi events in hadronic collisions, using W (+/-) - GT mu nu(mu) and J/psi - GT mu(+)mu(-) center dot A yield of W (+/-) + prompt J/psi events is observed, with a statistical significance of 5.1 sigma. The production rate as a ratio to the inclusive W (+/-) boson production rate is measured, and the double parton scattering contribution to the cross section is estimated.

AB - This article presents measurements of the t-channel single top-quark ((t) over bart) and top-antiquark (_ t) total production cross sections sdtq_ and sd _ tq_, their ratio Rt sdtq_= sd _ tq_, and a measurement of the inclusive production cross section sdtq _ _ tq_ in proton-proton collisions at ffiffiffi ps = 7 TeV at the LHC. Differential cross sections for the tq and _ tq processes are measured as a function of the transverse momentum and the absolute value of the rapidity of t and _ t, respectively. The analyzed data set was recorded with the ATLAS detector and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 4.59 fb-1. Selected events contain one charged lepton, large missing transverse momentum, and two or three jets. The cross sections are measured by performing a binned maximum-likelihood fit to the output distributions of neural networks. The resulting measurements are sdtq_ 46 = 1dstat_ = 6dsyst_ pb, sd _ tq_ = 23 +/- 1dstat_ = 3dsyst_ pb, Rt = 2.04 0.13dstat_ +/-=0.12dsyst_, and sdtq _ _ tq_ = 68 +/-= 2dstat_ = 8dsyst_ pb, consistent with the Standard Model expectation. The uncertainty on the measured cross sections is dominated by systematic uncertainties, while the uncertainty on Rt is mainly statistical. Using the ratio of sdtq _ _ tq_ to its theoretical prediction, and assuming that the top-quark-related CKM matrix elements obey the relation jVtbj = jVtsj; jVtdj, we determine jVtbj = 1.02 = 0.07.

AB - Nearly 50 years ago, theoretical physicists proposed that a field permeates the universe and gives energy to the vacuum. This field was required to explain why some, but not all, fundamental particles have mass. Numerous precision measurements during recent decades have provided indirect support for the existence of this field, but one crucial prediction of this theory has remained unconfirmed despite 30 years of experimental searches: the existence of a massive particle, the standard model Higgs boson. The ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN has now observed the production of a new particle with a mass of 126 giga-electron volts and decay signatures consistent with those expected for the Higgs particle. This result is strong support for the standard model of particle physics, including the presence of this vacuum field. The existence and properties of the newly discovered particle may also have consequences beyond the standard model itself.

AB - A search for a Higgs boson has been performed in the H - GT WW - GT l nu jj channel in 1.04 fb(-1) of pp collision data at root s = 7 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. No significant excess of events is observed over the expected background and limits on the Higgs boson production cross section are derived for a Higgs boson mass in the range 240 GeV LT m(H) LT 600 GeV. The best sensitivity is reached for m(H) = 400 GeV, where the 95% confidence level upper bound on the cross section for H - GT WW production is 3.1 pb, or 2.7 times the standard model prediction.
