AB - This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of adsorption and photocatalysis techniques at removing the herbicide clomazone (CLO) and the antidepressant known as amitriptyline (AMI) from water. This study employed kinetic models to analyze the removal processes and assess the potential toxicity of the treated water. The structure and morphology of the prepared multi-walled carbon nanotubes were characterized as adsorbents by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared techniques, and Raman spectroscopy. The adsorption kinetics of CLO and AMI were studied on the pristine and functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes. Kinetic studies were performed by modeling the obtained experimental data using three kinetic models: pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and Elovich kinetic models. On the other hand, the efficiency of CLO and AMI photodegradation was examined as a function of the type of irradiation (UV and simulated solar irradiation) and type of TiO2 photocatalyst (Aeroxide and Kronos). Under the experimental conditions employed, the reaction followed pseudo-first-order kinetics. Additionally, in order to assess the toxicity of water containing CLO, AMI, and their intermediates, toxicity assessments were conducted using human fetal lung fibroblast cells. The results obtained indicate the effectiveness of both methods and provide valuable insights into their removal mechanisms, contributing to the advancement of sustainable water treatment strategies.

AB - In this study, eco-friendly microwave-assisted esterification reactions of chenodeoxycholic acid with medium-chain diols (1,2-ethanediol, 1,4-butanediol, 1,6-hexanediol, 1,8-octanediol, and 1,10-decanediol) or tetraethylene glycol were accomplished. The synthesized bile acid esters were obtained with high yields (up to 81 %) and purity in a short reaction time (15 min). It is shown that the microwave technique is a suitable method for the preparation of chenodeoxycholic acid esters. In order to obtain de-tailed insight into the lipophilic behavior of the studied chenodeoxycholic acid esters, a comparative study of chromatographic behavior and lipophilicity was performed. Also, the present study deals with the estimation of pH - logD profiles in order to get an overview of the changes in lipophilicity related to the pH value changes. The obtained results indicate that studied compounds have logD values in the range acceptable for potential drug candidates. Chromatographic lipophilicity of synthesized chenodeox-ycholic acid esters successfully correlate with in silico lipophilicity descriptors.

AB - Cholesterol as very important biomolecule is the precursor of many biologically significant compounds which give strength and flexibility to the biological membranes. It is also a crucial component in lipoproteins, and has an important role to transport hydrophobic molecules in hydrophilic media such as blood [1, 2]. The analytical performance of carbon paste electrodes (CPE) bulk modified with ionic liquid 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide ([AMIM][DCA]), and surface modified with platinum on graphitized carbon (Pt-C) or platinum-ruthenium alloy on graphitized carbon (Pt,Ru-C) for analysis of hydrogen peroxide (H 2O2) were compared. The prepared working electrodes were characterized using scanning electron microscopy–energydispersive X-ray spectrometry, together with electrochemical impedance spectroscopic, cyclic voltammetric, and amperometric techniques. After method optimization, an enzyme cholesterol oxidase (ChOx) was immobilized on the surface of Pt,Ru-C/IL-CPE by Nafion®. The improved cholesterol amperometric determination was achieved in phosphate buffer solution pH 7.50 at a working potential of 0.60 V. Under the optimized experimental conditions, a linear relationship between oxidation current and cholesterol concentration was in the concentration range from 0.31 to 2.46 µM, with an estimated detection limit of 0.13 µM and relative standard deviation (RSD) below 4.2%. The optimized amperometric method in combination with the developed ChOx/Pt,Ru-C/IL-CPE biosensor showed good repeatability and high selectivity towards cholesterol biosensing despite the presence of possible interferences. The ChOx/Pt,Ru-C/IL-CPE was tested for the determination of the free cholesterol, by its enzymatic reaction product H 2O2, in a human blood serum sample. The percentage recovery ranged from 99.08 to 102.81%, while RSD was below 2.0% for untreated, as well as for spiked human blood serum sample.

AB - In present work, the enzyme cholesterol oxidase (ChOx) was immobilized by Nafion® (Naf) on Pt,Ru–C nanocomposite and an ionic liquid (IL)–modified carbon paste electrode (CPE) in order to create cholesterol biosensor (Naf/ChOx/Pt,Ru–C/IL-CPE). The prepared working electrodes were characterized using scanning electron microscopy–energy-dispersive spectrometry, while their electrochemical performance was evaluated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopic, cyclic voltammetric, and amperometric techniques. Excellent synergism between IL 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide ([AMIM][DCA]), Pt,Ru–C, and ChOx, as modifiers of CPE, offers the most pronounced analytical performance for improved cholesterol amperometric determination in phosphate buffer solution pH 7.50 at a working potential of 0.60 V. Under optimized experimental conditions, a linear relationship between oxidation current and cholesterol concentration was found for the range from 0.31 to 2.46 µM, with an estimated detection limit of 0.13 µM and relative standard deviation (RSD) below 5.5%. The optimized amperometric method in combination with the developed Naf/ChOx/Pt,Ru–C/IL-CPE biosensor showed good repeatability and high selectivity towards cholesterol biosensing. The proposed biosensor was successfully applied to determine free cholesterol in a human blood serum sample via its enzymatic reaction product hydrogen peroxide despite the presence of possible interferences. The percentage recovery ranged from 99.08 to 102.81%, while RSD was below 2.0% for the unspiked as well as the spiked human blood serum sample. The obtained results indicated excellent accuracy and precision of the method, concluding that the developed biosensor can be a promising alternative to existing commercial cholesterol tests used in medical practice. modified ring holders was done following the changes in ISO 4037:2019 and IEC 62387:2020. The type testing
was done by varying radiation-based influence quantities: photon energies ranging from 33.3 keV up to 1.25
MeV, angle of incidence values of 0◦, 45◦, 60◦, 75◦, dose range from 0.05 mSv to 10 Sv. The results show that the
passive dosimetry monitoring system satisfies IEC 62387:2020 requirements in the mandatory range of influence
quantities, except for the lowest tested energy of 33 keV, when incident radiation angle is ±60◦ and higher.

AB - Traditional Serbian religious art originated in Byzantine culture and conserved Byzantine elements until modern times. However, since the end of the 17th century, many changes in traditional icon painting have been introduced. Previous studies focused on the changes in iconography and style, but very little attention was paid to the changes in painting materials and techniques. This research focuses on the blue pigments on icons from the first half of the 18th century. Eight icons with blue areas of a different hue were selected for the study. Due to its rarity in nature, price, and iconographical importance, the blue pigment was particularly praised by painters. Therefore, the choice of the blue pigment can be related to historical information to trace influences and the development of the painter’s practice. Imaging techniques, several portable, non-destructive analytical techniques, such as XRF and FTIR, followed by optical microscopy and SEM-EDX analysis of the samples were used to characterize blue pigments and the painting technique. An analysis showed that icon painters at the beginning of the 18th century used pigments such as azurite, an indigo-organic colourant of plant origin, and Prussian blue. Contrary to the traditional belief that natural ultramarine blue was used, it was not confirmed in any studied examples.

AB - This paper presents the results of gamma spectrometry measurements of natural radionuclides ( 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K) in some floor and wall ceramic tiles produced in Serbia and used in homes and workplaces. The level of radioactivity of some ceramic tiles produced in Serbia by two major manufacturers–Zorka Keramika and Toza Markovic was examined. The measured mean value of the activity concentration of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K exceeds the average values in the world for building materials with values of 67.2±6.9 Bq kg-1 for 226Ra, 57.4±4.7 Bq kg-1 for 232Th and 808±48 Bq kg-1 for 40K. Based on these calculated values, the representative level index gamma index, associated with gamma radiation, whose average value is 0.78±0.06, and annual effective dose, whose average value is 0.117±0.009 mSv y-1 for home was obtained. Estimated values fulfill all the recommendations of the European Union for building materials, thus analyzed materials are considered not to be a health hazard for the public.

AB - The widespread use of ionic liquids (ILs) as greener solvents in analytical sciences, especially in sample pretreatment, has focused attention on exploiting their enormous potential, not only on eliminating and improving the drawbacks faced by scientists. These ionic compounds with unique physicochemical properties can be tuned through smart synthesis, combining cations and anions, so that the compound exhibits excellent properties for its intended purpose. Ionic liquids are rightly referred to as designer solvents. Validation of a newly proposed analytical methods using ionic liquids, either in sample preparation or in further analysis, is a critical process to demonstrate that a particular analytical method is fit for purpose and provides reliable and accurate results. In addition, this article specially addressed the potential toxicity of ionic liquids with the modest goal of assisting researchers in this field by expanding their target areas.

AB - In this work, aqueous biphasic systems (ABSs) formed by copolymers, ionic liquids (ILs) and natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) have been demonstrated to be effective separation platforms for the extraction of hydrophobic pharmaceutical ingredients such as parthenolide (PAR). This work addresses the determination of the liquid–liquid equilibrium of ABS composed of choline lactate IL or choline chloride – lactic acid NADES and two different block copolymers Pluronic (PL17R4 and PL10R5), and their influence on the ABS formation and extraction efficiency of PAR. The ability of Pluronics to form ABS is compared to widely used polypropylene glycol polymer (PPG400). Comparing the effect of the ionic liquid and NADES on the ABS formation, it is shown that both salting-our reagents successfully form ABS and do not affect the extraction efficiency of PAR. The main influence on the high parthenolide extraction efficiency (>96%) is governed by the hydrophobic interactions between Pluronic and investigated compound, regardless on the applied salting-out reagent. Due to a high extraction efficiency achieved in PL-rich phase and promissing medical features of PAR, obtained results showed that this phase could be used as biocompatible drug delivery system. Avoiding commercially available organic solvents, elevated temperatures and pressure, the proposed method is greener alternative for PAR extraction.

AB - Although sample preparation, as an unavoidable step of the analytical process should be simple, it is very often identified as a bottleneck. Simplicity of sample preparation based on cost-effective and non-hazardous materials is mandatory for any sustainable and environmental friendly approach. Aqueous biphasic systems (ABS), based on functionalized ionic liquids (FILs) are acceptable alternatives to classical extraction procedures, due to the replacement of organic solvent with diluted aqueous-soluble ionic liquids. In this work, two water soluble FILs based on 2-mercaptobenzothiazolate anion, [mbt]: 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium [mbt] ([bmim][mbt]) and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium [mbt] ([emim][mbt]), were designed and synthesized in order to selectively extract Cd(II) and Pb(II) from the river sediment. It was found that [mbt]– anion acts as the ligand and forms complexes with Cd(II) and Pb(II) which are responsible for their efficient extraction, while cation is more responsible for the formation of ABS. Partition coefficients of 408 and 180 for Cd(II) and Pb(II), respectively, were obtained using ABS based on [bmim][mbt]. Direct extraction of Cd(II) and Pb(II) from the river sediment has been investigated and obtained optimal conditions are: 60 min direct contact of the aqueous solution of [bmim][mbt] and the sediment sample at 90 °C, followed by formation of ABS upon addition of potassium citrate. Using AGRE and AGREEprep tools greenness of the proposed method for direct extraction of Cd(II) and Pb(II) from the sediment are calculated. Obtained values of 0.69 and 0.71 for Cd(II) and Pb(II) extraction, respectively, showed a high level of the greenness of the proposed method.

AB - Dynamics of the driven Frenkel-Kontorova model with asymmetric deformable substrate potential is examined by analyzing response function, the largest Lyapunov exponent, and Poincaré sections for two neighboring particles. The obtained results show that the largest Lyapunov exponent, besides being used for investigating integral quantities, can be used for detecting microchanges in chain configuration of both damped Frenkel-Kontorova model with inertial term and its strictly overdamped limit. Slight changes in relative positions of the particles are registered through jumps of the largest Lyapunov exponent in the pinning regime. The occurrence of such jumps is highly dependent on type of commensurate structure and deformation of substrate potential. The obtained results also show that the minimal force required to initiate collective motion of the chain is not dependent on the number of Lyapunov exponent jumps in the pinning regime. These jumps are also registered in the sliding regime, where they are a consequence of a more complex structure of largest Lyapunov exponent on the step. © 2023 American Physical Society.

AB - In this work, the radon emanation coefficients for selected building materials that are most often used in Serbia for covering floor surfaces (concrete, concrete screed, granite, glazed ceramic tiles, marble, roofing tile, and terrazzo tile) were determined, and the influence of the material structure on their values. The concentration of 226Ra activity in the samples was determined using the gamma spectrometry method. Radon emanation was measured with the RAD7 device. The porosity of the samples was tested using mercury intrusion porosimetry and water absorption methods, and the structural analysis was performed using x-ray diffraction analysis and x-ray fluorescence analysis. The measured values of 226Ra activity concentrations were in the range (4.93–298) Bq kg−1, and the estimated values of the radon emanation coefficients were in the range (0.55–6.05) %. The obtained results indicate that the chemical and mineralogical composition, method of production, and the 226Ra activity concentration have an influence on the emanation of radon from the material. No significant correlation was found between the radon emanation coefficient and the open porosity of the material, most likely due to the inhomogeneous presence of pores of different dimensions in the materials. It was established that the total value of the emanation coefficient depends on the emanation coefficient for pores ⩽100 μm in size.

AB - The structures of the first two complexes with bidentate coordination of aminoguanidine Schiff base, i.e., 2-acetylpyridine-aminoguanidine (L), are reported. The complex of the formula [Cd2Cl6(HL)2] (1) was obtained in the reaction of warm aqueous solutions of chloride salts of Cd(II), Zn(II) and the ligand, while the reaction of cadmium bromide and the ligand in the presence of deprotonating agent as well as ammonium thiocyanate resulted in the formation of the complex in which Schiff base has both the role of the ligand and the counterion, viz., [HL][Cd(HL)(NCS)2XY]·H2O (2), where X is Cl- or Br-, and Y Br- or SCN-. The complexes were characterized by IR spectroscopy, elemental analysis, conductometric measurements and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The unusual bidentate coordination of the Schiff base lead to significant changes in the geometry of this molecule (from almost planar in free form and as a tridentate ligand to twisted as a bidentate ligand). Besides, in complex 1 relatively rare bridging coordination of Cl- in octahedral Cd(II) is found, while the crystal structure of complex 2 exhibits substitutional disorder, and contains four different anions: [Cd(HL)(NCS)2Br(SCN)]- (ca. 61 %), [Cd(HL)(NCS)2Cl(SCN)]- (ca. 35 %), [Cd(HL)(NCS)2Br2]- (ca. 3 %) and [Cd(HL)(NCS)2ClBr]- (ca. 1 %).

AB - Unlike other studies that only determined the chemical composition of essential oils depending on their geographic origin, this research investigated the effect of weather conditions (temperature, precipitation, and insolation) on the chemical composition of Nepeta nuda L. essential oil. The collection of wild-growing N. nuda was carried out during three successive years, 2019, 2020, and 2021 at Rtanj Mountain (Serbia) on the same date (July 7th). Essential oil extraction from the plant was performed by hydro-distillation. After gas chromatographic-mass spectrometric analysis, a total of 102 volatile compounds were separated from N. nuda, during the observed period, 28 were unidentified, compromising between 5.0% and 8.7%, depending on the year. A multiple linear regression model was created, and statistical analyses were performed to provide knowledge about the prediction, feature profile, and the similarity in contents of active compounds of the N. nuda essential oil. The influence of temperature on the accumulation of the most abundant component, 1,8-cineole, was positive, while the impact of precipitation and insolation was negative. According to the cluster tree, there are four chemotypes of N. nuda essential oil: with nepetalactone, 1,8-cineole, mixed (nepetalactone+1,8-cineole+germacrene D), and nonspecific chemotypes. Bearing in mind that the biological activity of a raw material depends on the chemotype and environmental factors, this is a topic that deserves a more detailed approach. The N. nuda and its essential oil are promising materials with high biological potential, and these deserve further detailed investigation.

AB - Garden angelica (Angelica archangelica L.), native to the northern temperate region, is widespread in Europe and Asia. Since the middle ages, it has been used for healing and as a vegetable in traditional dishes. In the modern era, it has been proven that A. archangelica has a complex chemical composition. The main derivatives that contribute to the plant’s biological activities are essential oil and coumarins. In this review, the focus is on the cross-analysis of the taxonomy of A. archangelica, and its distribution in different regions, with the presentation of the richness of its biochemical composition, which overall contributes to the widespread use of the roots of this plant in folk medicine. It belongs to the plants that were introduced to the wider area of Central, Eastern, and Southern Europe; as a medicinal plant, it represents a significant part of the medical flora of many areas. Cluster analysis of pooled data indicates a clear differentiation of chemotypes.

AB - Hydrothermally synthesized zirconia nanopowders: pure and doped with Si4+ ions were spectroscopically characterized and used as photocatalysts for degradation of herbicides sulcotrione and fluroxypyr. Zirconia is wide band gap ceramic (Eg ~ 5 eV) however, synthesized nanopowders showed unexpected, modest absorbance in visible light range. That fact inspired photocatalytical degradation of herbicides with wide utilization, using solar irradiation (SI) in laboratory conditions. In the scope of this study, degradation of herbicides was only slightly achieved (irradiation time 2h).

AB - Resultsof Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) are reported for lithium-niobium-titanium-oxide (LNTO) ceramics synthesized by a solid-state reaction method with two functional additives (MoO3 or ZnO) in the temperature range 323 K - 573 K and frequencies between 10−1 Hz and 107 Hz. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveals a textured morphology of rod and plate-like particles that are typical for M-phase LNTO materials, while X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirms the formation of an M-phase member compound with an approximate structure of Li7Nb3Ti5O21. Complex impedance analysis indicates that its overall electrical resistivity behavior depends mostly on the grain boundary processes. EIS analysis shows a negative temperature coefficient of resistance behavior (NTCR) in a defined temperature range in two LNTOs and thermal activation of the conduction mechanisms. The low dielectric constants of 5.5 and 12.1 at 1 MHz were found for the first and second LNTOs, respectively. Complimentary Raman spectroscopic measurements, despite very large crystallographic unit cell of LNTO, reveal only a small number of lines, which is the consequence of a “molecular” nature of materials.

AB - The main sources of air pollution in Serbia are the energy sector, which includes thermal power plants, heating plants and individual heating of households, then the transport sector and industrial activity (oil refineries, chemical industry, mining, etc.). It is estimated that the number of premature deaths caused by air pollution in Serbia is among the highest in Europe. The most important parameters for monitoring are the concentration of particles and their size distribution. Sampling of suspended atmospheric particles (particulate matter - PM) fractionated by size was conducted in the period from March 2012 to December 2013 in the suburban part of Belgrade at the background measuring station Zeleno brdo, as a receptor site. Every sixth day, one averaged 48-hour sample of aerosol particles was taken, separated into eleven intervals of aerodynamic particle diameters (Dp) using a low-pressure cascade impactor prof. dr. Berner–LPI \25 /0.0085 /2. The microwave digestion technique was used to destroy the collected aerosol particle deposit from the six tested size ranges: 0.27 ≤ Dp ≤ 0.53 μm, 0.53 ≤ Dp ≤ 1.06 μm, 1.06 ≤ Dp ≤ 2.09 μm, 2.09 ≤ Dp ≤ 4.11 μm, 4.11 ≤ Dp ≤ 8.11 μm and 8.11≤ Dp ≤ 16 μm. Concentrations of 25 test elements were determined using induced conjugated plasma by mass spectrometry. The most common elements in the tested aerosol were Ca, Fe, Al, K and Mg. The highest percentage of As, Cd, K, Pb and Sb was present in the fractions of fine mode particles, while in the coarse mode Al, Ba, Ca, Cr, Fe, Mg, Mn and Ti dominated. Subsequently, gamma spectrometric analysis of the samples was performed. One part of the study included the measurement of each of the 11 fractions separately, and the other part the analysis of all 11 fractions at once. Also, the activities of several different samples of the same fraction were measured. Traces of natural radionuclides were found in the spectrum, while radionuclides of artificial origin were not detected. The paper discusses the investigated correlations of the obtained results of the activity concentrations of radionuclides with the dominant elemental composition and particle diameter, as well as the possible origin of air pollution.

AB - About 75% of breast cancers express estrogen receptors (ERs), which is a good base for an efficient endocrine therapy. This gives the opportunity for the treatment of patients with antiestrogens, compounds that bind to the ERs and thus compete to estradiol (E2), preventing its action in progression of estrogen-depending cancers. Here we present results of testing the effect of the modified steroids, namely 17-substituted 16-nitrile 16,17-secoestrane compounds on the E2-ER complex forming, its stability, nuclear translocation and binding to DNA. Almost all compounds in moderate to high rate induced lower forming of this complex, destabilizing it – they increased Kd of this complex and decreased number of binding sites. Complex formed in the presence of some test secosteroids could pass to the nucleus, while other compounds inhibited translocation. In the presence of some compounds binding of the formed complex E2-ER to DNA was noticed. Docking followed molecular dynamics simulation was performed to reveal binding mode of E2 to ER in the presence of test secosteroids. Amino acids important for binding process and complex stabilization were detected. Analysis of the simulation data allowed identifying key amino acids and type of binding of the secoestrane compounds, important for high affinity binding of the steroidal compounds.

AB - In vitro cytotoxic evaluation, formation constants and thermal stability of four mixed-ligand Co(II) complexes with tpmc = N,N',N",N'"-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane and carboxylate/dicarboxylate co-ligands of formulas [Co2(benz)2tpmc](ClO4)2•3H2O (1), benz– = benzoate anion; [Co2(L)tpmc](ClO4)2•nH2O, L = pht2– (phthalate dianion), n=2 (2), L = ipht2– (isophthalate dianion), n=4 (3) and L = tpht2–(terephthalate dianion), n=4 (4) are reported. The stoichiometric composition of the compounds in the solution were determined spectrophotometrically using Job's methods. Formation constants, K and Gibbs free energy, ΔG values were calculated. The thermal behavior of the complexes was investigated by simultaneous TG/DSC and TG – MS measurements. The cytotoxic effect of the complexes, the free ligands, the DMSO solvent and cis-platin, as referent cytostatic drug, was evaluated on Human cervix adenocarcinoma (HeLa), human melanoma (Fem-x) and human colon carcinoma (LS174) cell lines. The IC50 values were between 12.7–42.3 μM. The first crystal structure determination of the Co(II) complex [Co2(µ-pht)tpmc](ClO4)2•H2O with boat conformation of tpmc ligand, was also done. The complex crystallizes in monoclinic crystal system, C2/c space group. The geometries around both Co(II) atoms are highly distorted octahedral. The Co(II) ions exhibit CoN4O2 coordination environments with the four nitrogen donor atoms of the tpmc ligand and two oxygen atoms belonging to the one carboxylate group of pht2− ligand. The carboxylate groups of pht2− are coordinated in an endo-bidentate mode. The tpmc ligand adopted a boat conformation in which the two coordinated Co(II) atoms are located on the same side of the ring, with Co•••Co distance amounting 5.4799(5) Å. © 2021

AB - A promising lithium-indium-oxide (LiInO2) wide band-gap semiconductor for scintillating detection, photoluminescence, and photocatalysis [1-3] was prepared by a mechanochemical solid-state synthetic procedure that can be found elsewhere [3]. Its structure and morphology were investigated by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Raman spectroscopy. SEM images show agglomerates of relatively uniform size of around 300 nm spherical-shaped particles of LiInO2 powder, while the XRD pattern confirmed the formation of the nanocrystalline tetragonal structure withamdI /41 space group (no. 141) symmetry. Detailed vibration analysis, together with the assignments of the band modes, was performed through the best-fit match of the experimental and density functional theory (DFT) calculated Raman spectrum. Geometry optimizations and vibrational frequencies calculations were conducted using B97-1 functional correlation [4] and LanL2DZ was used as a basis set.

AB - The response function and largest Lyapunov exponent analysis were applied to the driven overdamped Frenkel-Kontorova model with two types of anharmonic convex interparticle potentials. In both cases model reduces to a single particle model for integer values of winding number. It is shown that the mirror image of the amplitude dependence of critical depinning force and largest Lyapunov exponent observed recently in the standard Frenkel-Kontorova model (Odavić et al 2017 Commun. Nonlinear Sci. Numer. Simul. 47, 100) is not retained generally. Behaviour of systems with relatively strong interparticle force was examined and evidence for the appearance of mode-locking phenomenon in both directions of particles’ motion is presented. © 2021 IOP Publishing Ltd.

AB - Nowadays, great focus is given to the contamination of surface and groundwater because of the extensive usage of pesticides in agriculture. The improvements of commercial catalyst TiO2 activity using different Au nanoparticles were investigated for mesotrione photocatalytic degradation under simulated sunlight. The selected system was 2.43 × 10−3% Au–S–CH2–CH2–OH/TiO2 (0.5 g/L) that was studied by transmission electron microscopy and ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy. It was found that TiO2 particles size was ~20 nm and ~50 nm, respectively. The Au nanoparticles were below 10 nm and were well distributed within the framework of TiO2 . For 2.43 × 10−3% Au–S–CH2–CH2–OH/TiO2 (0.5 g/L), band gap energy was 2.45 eV. In comparison to the pure TiO2, addition of Au nanoparticles generally enhanced photocatalytic removal of mesotrione. By examining the degree of mineralization, it was found that 2.43 × 10−3% Au–S–CH2–CH2–OH/TiO2 (0.5 g/L) system was the most efficient for the removal of the mesotrione and intermediates. The effect of tert-butanol, NaF and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt on the transformation rate suggested that the relative contribution of various reactive species changed in following order: h+ >•OHads >•OHbulk. Finally, several intermediates that were formed during the photocatalytic treatment of mesotrione were identified. © 2020 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.
