AB - Bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) powders were synthesized by auto-combustion method using glycine as a fuel. Doping ions of different valence were used to study the influence on electrical conductivity and ferroelectric properties. Powders were mixed and hot-pressed with α-PVDF to form flexible composite samples. Composites endured significantly higher electrical fields with lower leakage and retained the weak ferromagnetism present in powders. Dielectric properties were improved by doping with Zr4+, Y3+ and Ca2+ as well as the electrical resistivity. Flexible composites exhibited improved electrical resistivity and modified conduction mechanism. Relatively high magnetization of powders completely originates from magnetite particles formed during the combustion, while sintered samples exhibited typical antiferromagnetic behaviour.

AB - In recent years polyoxometalates (POMs) have attracted significant research interest due to versatile properties. These properties are determined by the size, structure and elemental composition of POMs and hence play an important role in their application. In the present study, the ion beam irradiation (10 keV C+ ions, 5 × 1014–2.5 × 1015 ions/cm2) has been utilized for modification of physicochemical properties of 120 nm-thick layer of 12-tungstophosphoric acid (WPA). Scanning electron microscopy analysis of irradiated films showed change of morphology i.e. an increase of WPA grain size with irradiation and coalescence of grains at the highest fluence. This was accompanied by structural changes. Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared analysis revealed that vibration bands of Keggin anion became less pronounced as fluence increased, while Raman spectra appeared as strongly modified. The effect of irradiation with 1.25 × 1015 ions/cm2 on the structure of WPA was similar to the effect of thermal treatment at 600 °C. Irradiation of WPA led to decrease of the band gap (from 4.07 to 3.92 eV), which was correlated to transformation Keggin anions into a network of WO6 octahedra and PO4 tetrahedra. This is in line with increased number of W=Od bonds observed by UV–Visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Beside transformation to bronzes a reduction of WPA was observed by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (shift to lower binding energy) and Raman methods, whereas the Raman spectra of irradiated samples were similar to heteropoly blue. The electrochemical properties of irradiated WPA were also assessed. Cyclic voltammetry measurements showed that at up to 1.25 × 1015 ions/cm2 lithiation capacity of WPA increases and activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) improves. The highest fluence caused interconnection of WO6 octahedra, closing of lithiation pathways and decrease in the number of active sites for HER. Our results provide a novel insight into the effects of ion beam irradiation on WPA and demonstrate high potential for tuning of physicochemical properties of POMs that are relevant in wide range of applications. © 2021 Elsevier Ltd

AB - Nanoparticle materials have become a promising candidate for a new kind of storage media based on thermally induced memory effects due to the possibility to tailor their magnetic properties and behaviour. In this study, we have investigated whether the magnetic memory effects could appear at high, industry accessible temperatures including the possibility of thermal data inscription. Investigated iron oxide nanoparticles were synthesized by poliol method, which has been modified in order to allow control of particle agglomeration and consequently magnetic properties. Structure, morphology and the degree of nanoparticle agglomeration were studied by X-Ray diffraction, Transmission Electron Microscopy and Dynamic Light Scattering techniques, while magnetic properties as well as memory effects were measured on a commercial SQUID-based magnetometer. Results of the study confirmed that in super spin glass magnetite nanoparticles, magnetic memory effects can be observed up to 200 K which represents much higher temperatures in comparison to those achieved in spin glasses and other glassy materials. Procedures of writing and reading (inscribing and retrieving) of digital information in such a material were demonstrated and discussed in details.

AB - Nickel−cobalt (Ni−Co) alloy powders were produced galvanostatically by using sulphate electrolytes withvarious ratios of Ni2+/Co2+ (mole ratios). The morphology, phase structure, chemical composition and magneticproperties were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffractometer (XRD), atomic emissionspectrometer (AES), and SQUID-based magnetometer, respectively. Morphology of the particles changed fromcauliflower-like and dendritic to coral-like and spongy-like ones with increasing Ni2+/Co2+ ratio from 0.25 to 4.0. XRDanalysis of the Ni−Co powders revealed that the decrease of Ni2+/Co2+ ratios (the increase of Co content) caused achange of structure from face centered cubic (FCC) obtained for the ratios of 4.0, 1.5 and 0.67 to a mixture of FCC andhexagonal closed-packed (HCP) phases for the ratio of 0.25. The increasing content of nickel led to change ofmechanism of electrolysis from irregular (up to ~40 wt.% Ni in the electrolytes) to close to equilibrium (between~40 and 60 wt.% Ni in the electrolytes) and anomalous co-deposition (over 60 wt.% Ni in the electrolytes) type. All ofthe obtained Ni−Co alloy samples behaved as soft magnetic materials while their magnetic parameters showedimmediate composition dependence since both coercivity and saturation magnetization almost linearly increased withincrease of the Co content.

AB - Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONP) with different distinctive morphologies (spherical, cubic, flower-like and needles) were utilized for modification of screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCE) to be used for synthetic organic dye degradation by an electrochemical approach. This platform was implemented for removal of the synthetic organic dye, Reactive Black 5 (RB5) in aqueous solution. Modified SPCE with spherically shaped IONP (IONS) had the highest dye removal efficiency. Thus, IONS were then used for surface decoration of the most common carbon-based materials (graphene, graphene oxide, carboxylated graphene, graphene nanoribbons, graphene nanoplatelets, single- and multi-wall carbon nanotubes), and the nanocomposites formed were deposited on the electrode surfaces. Using IONS/graphene composite (IONS@GN) for electrode modification resulted in the best effect. Removal of RB5 with this electrode was 51% better in comparison with bare SPCE, reducing the time required for complete dye degradation from 61 to 30 min Using IONS-modified SPCE, total RB5 removal occurred in 51 min, improving the performance by 16% over that of bare SPCE. The effects determined, i.e., the best IONP morphology and best type of carbon-based material for nanocomposite formation to enhance RB5 removal will provide guidelines for further modifications of SPCE with nanomaterials and nanocomposites, for application of this electrochemical approach in the degradation of organic pollutants. © 2020 The Author(s). AB - Biologically stable 90Y-labelled albumin microspheres (AMS) were developed by optimizing the process of their preparation. Three formulations of 90Y-AMS were initially prepared with high radiolabelling yield but depending on the step when the radionuclide 90Y and DTPA chelator were added, radiolabelled microspheres with different in vitro and in vivo stability were obtained. DTPA was proved as a useful chelating agent that tightly links radionuclide 90Y to albumin. Also, AMS radiolabelled via DTPA during preparation and before microspheres stabilization, showed significant in vitro and in vivo stability ready for the potential use in selective internal radiation therapy. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

AB - Application of bone-seeking radiopharmaceuticals is one of the modalities in the management of metastatic bone pain. The present study aimed to investigate the potential of Lu-177-labeled phosphate/phosphonate ligands: 1-hydroxyethane 1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP), 2,3-dicarboxypropane-1,1-diphosphonic acid (DPD), and imidodiphosphate tetrasodium salt (IDP), as bone pain palliation agents. HEDP, DPD, and IDP were radiolabeled with Lu-177 in high radiolabeling yield (98.49%, 93.31%, and 90.69%, respectively), forming in vitro stable radiolabeled complexes in saline and human serum after 96 h. Biodistribution was followed by imaging studies and ex vivo measurement of radioactivity in organs in healthy Wistar rats. Significant bone accumulation and long retention even after 96 h (3.85 +/- 0.91%ID/g), as well as relatively low uptake in soft tissue such as liver and spleen (<1%ID/g), were observed for Lu-177-HEDP. Two other radiolabeled ligands showed lower accumulations in bone (<1% ID/g) and higher accumulations in liver and spleen at examined time points (>1.5% ID/g). Obtained results suggest that difference in the chemical structure of phosphonates/phosphates influences the rate of bone incorporation of Lu-177-radiolabeled complexes. Desirable biodistribution pattern of Lu-177-HEDP makes it suitable for its further preclinical investigations as a potential bone pain palliation agent.

AB - In this investigation, we have synthesized YbxY1-xF3 solid solutions by fluorination of yttrium and ytterbium sesquioxides with ammonium hydrogen difluoride. According to the XRD analysis, all synthesized YbxY1-xF3 samples have an orthorhombic crystal structure belonging to the β-YF3 structural type. The refinement of crystal structure was done by the Rietveld method within the Pnma space group using the TCH pseudo-Voigt function. The anisotropic peak broadening was analyzed, and the average apparent crystallite size is about 50 nm with a small anisotropy of shape, while the significant microstrain that is highly anisotropic is present in all samples. The temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility was analyzed by applying the model of a free ion perturbed by the crystal field. We have obtained the effective magnetic quantum numbers Mieff of four Kramer's doublets of Yb3+ ion along with the entire crystal field splitting of the 2F7/2 manifold of Yb3+ in YF3. The acquired maximum energy splitting of the ground level is about 150 K in our most diluted samples. The field-dependent isothermal magnetization measurements were carried out at various temperatures and analyzed by classical Langevin function. Results obtained from magnetic measurements show that all YbxY1-xF3 (x ≠ 0) solid solutions exhibit pure paramagnetic behavior in the whole temperature range from 2 to 300 K, with a predominant antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. © 2020 Elsevier Ltd

AB - Mefenamic acid and indomethacin, medicaments belonging to the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents, were determined separately and simultaneously at anodically prepared BDDE. Differential pulse voltammetry was used to establish simple and fast analytical procedure based on electrooxidation of mefenamic acid at 0.6 V and indomethacin at 1.0 V (and 1.1 V). At optimal conditions, it was suitable for highly sensitive and selective determination of these compounds with LODs comparable to previously reported modified electrodes. Additionally, considering the importance of these compounds, we proposed precise and accurate quantification of these species based on green and simple pre-treatable electrochemical sensor. The effect of interfering agents (tablet ingredients and vitamins) was appeared to be negligibly confirming a favourable selectivity of the method. The proposed method was analytically applied by simultaneously determining mefenamic acid and indomethacin in pharmaceutical formulations. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.

AB - A metastable ε-polymorph of iron(III) oxide (ε-Fe2O3) is a very attractive material from the technological, engineering, and scientific points of view. In comparison with other iron oxides, it is characterized by unusual magnetic properties and a giant coercivity of ~20 kOe, which is the largest value among metal oxides. The routine method of ε-Fe2O3 formation is based on the thermal annealing of maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) nanoparticles confined in a silica matrix where the ε-Fe2O3 appears as an intermediate phase between the maghemite and an α-polymorph (α-Fe2O3) hematite (γ→ε→α pathway). In this study, it is demonstrated that the ε→α transformation can be reversed when hematite nanoparticles with an anisotropic hollow morphology are annealed above 600 °C. The observed reversal of the phase stability is explained in terms of an increased nanoparticle surface area and surface energy related to the hollow structure. This study demonstrates the applicability of surface-induced phase transformation to stabilize and control ε-Fe2O3 nanostructures with anisotropic shape and high coercivity ~1600 kA/m that is one of the key properties of functional magnetic materials for information processing and storage. The understanding of ε-Fe2O3 formation mechanism can provide a new viewpoint and guidance for designing metastable polymorphs and applicative properties. © 2020 Acta Materialia Inc.

AB - In this work, we studied structural and magnetic properties of 18 nm sized Zn-substituted magnetite, 28 nm sized unsubstituted and 17 nm sized (Mn, Zn)-substituted iron oxide nanoparticles, synthesized by thermal decomposition method. Their features were examined by analyzing the x-ray diffraction data, Fe-57 Mossbauer spectra and magnetization measurements by SQUID interferometer. The microstructure was inspected comparing the different size and strain broadening models incorporated into Fullprof software. In terms of crystallinity and size dispersion, applied synthesis protocol shows superiority over decomposition of iron oleate and the co-precipitation synthesis route. The saturation magnetization at T = 5 K was found to be within the M-S = 91.2-98.6 A m(2 )kg(-1) range, while at 300 K M-S of pure and Zn-substituted Fe3O4 nanoparticles is 83.6 and 86.2 A m(2 )kg(-1), respectively. Effective magnetic anisotropy constant K-eff, estimated under slow measurements by SQUID, is below 20 kJ m(-3) in all three samples. Some preliminary measurements of the magnetic hyperthermia performance, expressed via specific absorption rate value showed that the best heating performances were displayed by 18 nm sized oleic acid-coated Zn0.13Fe2.87O4 cubo-octahedrons with SAR approximately equal to 425 W/g(Fe) at H-0 = 20 kA m(-1) and f = 228 kHz.

AB - Memory effect due to spin-glass state below about 20 K has been illustrated in the hollandite-type α-KxMnO2 monocrystalline nanorods by systematic magnetization measurements including temperature- and time-dependent magnetization curves in low fields. In this work, we succeeded in writing, reading, and deleting 8-bits digital information in the investigated system. These results show that α-KxMnO2 is a good candidate material for a thermal memory cell. The phenomenological droplet model was used in the description of the observed memory effect, whose origin in α-KxMnO2 is associated with bulk properties, doping and frustration. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

AB - Nanocomposites (HAp/iron oxide), made of hydroxyapatite (HAp) and ferrimagnetic iron oxide, were synthesized by high-energy ball milling a mixture consisting of iron oxide nanoparticles and the starting materials used for the HAp synthesis: calcium hydrogen phosphate anhydrous (CaHPO4), and calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2). Two HAp/iron oxide samples with the magnetic phase content of 12 and 30 wt.% were prepared and their microstructure, morphology and magnetic properties were analysed by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Furthermore, the measurement of particle size distribution was performed by laser scattering, and temperature/field dependence on magnetization was determined. X-ray diffraction data confirmed the formation of two-phased samples (HAp and spinel iron oxide) without the presence of any other parasite phase. The shape of particles was nearly spherical in both samples, ranging from only a few to several tens of nanometres in diameter. These particles formed agglomerates with the most common value of the number-based particle size distribution of 380 and 310 nm for the sample with 12 and 30 wt.% of iron oxide, respectively. Magnetization data showed that both HAp/iron oxide composites had superparamagnetic behaviour at room temperature. © 2019 University of Novi Sad, Faculty of Technology. All rights reserved.

AB - Herein we report effects of partial substitution of Fe3+ by Y3+ in magnetite (Fe3O4) on morphology and inorganic arsenic species adsorption efficiency of the Fe3-xYxO4 nanoparticles formed. The series of Fe3-xYxO4 (x = 0.00, 0.042 and 0.084, labeled as Y00, Y05 and Y10, respectively) was synthesized using co-precipitation followed by microwave-hydrothermal treatment (MW) at 200 degrees C. With increase of yttrium content (x value), both the morphological inhomogeneity of the samples and the fraction of spinel nanorods as compared to spinel pseudospherical particles increased. By both transmission electron microscopy and x-ray powder diffraction analyses, it was determined that the direction of growth of the spinel nanorods is along the [110] crystallographic direction. The Fe3-xYxO4 affinities of adsorption toward the inorganic arsenic species, As(III) (arsenite, AsO33-) and As(V) (arsenate, AsO43-), were investigated. Increased Y3+ content related to changes in sample morphology was followed by a decrease of As(III) removal efficiency and vice versa for As(V). The increase in Y3+ content, in addition to increasing the adsorption capacity for As(V), significantly expanded the optimum pH range for the maximum removal and decreased the contact time for necessary 50% removal (t(1/2)) of As(V) (Y00: pH 2-3, t(1/2) = 3.12 min; Y05: pH 2-6, t(1/2) = 2.12 min and Y10: pH 2-10, t(1/2) = 1.12 min). The results point to incorporation of Y3+ in the crystal lattice of magnetite, inducing nanorod spinel structure formation with significant changes in sorption properties important for the removal of inorganic arsenic from waters.

AB - Development of a complex based on iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) for diagnosis and dual magnetic hyperthermia/radionuclide cancer therapy accomplishing high yields of radiolabeling and great magnetic heat induction is still a challenge. We report here the synthesis of citric acid, poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and poly(ethylene glycol) coated IONPs and their labeling with three radionuclides, namely, technetium (99mTc), yttrium (90Y), and lutetium (177Lu), aiming at potential use in cancer diagnosis and therapy. Polyol-synthesized IONPs are a flowerlike structure with 13.5 nm spherically shaped cores and 24.8 nm diameter. PAA-coated nanoparticles (PAA@IONP) showed the best characteristics such as easy radiolabeling with very high yields (>97.5%) with all three radionuclides, and excellent in vitro stabilities with less than 10% of radionuclides detaching after 24 h. Heating ability of PAA@IONP in an alternating external magnetic field showed intrinsic loss power value of 7.3 nH m2/kg, which is one of higher reported values. Additionally, PAA@IONP itself presented no significant cytotoxicity to the CT-26 cancer cells, reaching IC50 at 60 μg/mL. However, under the external magnetic field, they show hyperthermia-mediated cells killing, which correlated with the magnetic field strength and time of exposure. Since PAA@IONP are easy to prepare, biocompatible, and with excellent magnetic heat induction, these nanoparticles radiolabeled with high-energy beta emitters 90Y and 177Lu have valuable potential as agent for dual magnetic hyperthermia/radionuclide therapy, while radiolabeled with 99mTc could be used in diagnostic imaging. AB - We performed structural and magnetic investigation of Fe3O4/OA nanoparticles prepared by solvothermal method. Based on XRD, TEM and FTIR examination, investigated sample contained monodisperse, 5 nm-sized spherical magnetite nanoparticles coated with oleic acid. Magnetic measurement of the hysteretic curves at 5 K in zero-field cooled (ZFC) and field-cooled (FC) regime confirmed presence of exchange bias effect. ZFC/FC measurements were performed in applied magnetic fields: 10 Oe, 100 Oe, 200 Oe, 500 Oe and 1000 Oe. Zero-field cooled magnetization curves recorded in 10 Oe and 100 Oe exhibited behavior characteristic for low coercivity Nanomaterials. Same sample exposed to the ZFC/FC measurement protocol in 200 Oe, 500 Oe and 1000 Oe showed increase in ZFC magnetization in the certain temperature range. The observed feature is attributed to the local changes in the magnetite electronic structure, occurred through the spin reorientation process. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l.

Here we describe the preparation of a multifunctional 99mTc–bisphosphonate–coated magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) based on Fe3O4 and coated with two hydrophilic bisphosphonate ligands, i.e., methylene diphosphonate (MDP) and 1–hydroxyethane-1,1- diphosphonate (HEDP). The presence of the bisphosphonates on the MNPs surface, enabled their biocompatibility, colloidal stability and successful binding of the radionuclide. The morphology, size, structure, surface charge and magnetic properties of obtained bisphosphonate–coated Fe3O4 MNPs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, X–ray powder diffraction, dynamic light scattering, laser Doppler electrophoresis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and vibrating sample magnetometer. The specific power absorption values for Fe3O4–MDP and Fe3O4–HEDP were 113 W/g and 141 W/g, respectively, indicated their heating ability under applied magnetic field. Coated MNPs were radiolabeled with 99mTc using stannous chloride as the reducing agent in a reproducible high yield (95% for Fe3O4–MDP and 97% for Fe3O4–HEDP MNPs) and were remained stable in saline and human serum for 24 h. Ex vivo biodistribution studies presented significant liver and spleen uptake in healthy Wistar rats after intravenous administration at all examined time points due to the colloidal nature of both 99mTc–MNPs. Results of scintigraphy studies are in accordance with ex vivo biodistribution studies, demonstrating high in vivo stability of radiolabeled MNPs and therefore results of both methods were proved as accurate information on the biodistribution profile of investigated MNPs. Overall, in vitro and in vivo stability as well as heating ability, indicate that biocompatible radiolabeled bisphosphonate magnetic nanoparticles exhibit promising potential as a theranostic nanoagent. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

AB - It was reported that novel O,O′-diethyl-(S, S)-ethylenediamine-N,N′-di-2-(3-cyclohexyl) propanoate dihydrochloride (DE-EDCP) displayed in vitro antiproliferative activity on several human and mouse cancer cell lines, which was comparable to that of the prototypical anticancer drug cisplatin. In order to reveal its toxicity profile, acute and repeated-dose toxicity studies were performed in Naval Medical Research Institute (NMRI) Han mice. The intravenous LD50 values of DE-EDCP were found to be 95.3 and 101.3 mg/kg body weight in female and male mice, respectively. In the subacute toxicity study, DE-EDCP was administered intravenously at the doses of 15, 25, and 40 mg/kg/day for a period of 28 days. There were no adverse effects on general condition, growth, feed and water consumption, and hematological parameters. There was a significant increase in urea and alanine aminotransferase in female mice and aspartate aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase in both genders in 40 mg/kg/day dose-treated group. The histopathological changes confined to the liver and kidney, but in other organs were not found. Satellite group revealed that changes in the kidney and liver were less pronounced, suggesting their reversibility. Interactions with DNA could also be of importance for understanding DE-EDCP toxic side effects. Hyperchromic effect obtained with ultraviolet–visible, suggested electrostatic interactions between DE-EDCP and calf thymus DNA. The toxicity testing of DE-EDCP was conducted to predict human outcomes. © The Author(s) 2018.

AB - A new method involving the homogeneous dispersion of precursor compounds inside a methylcellulose matrix is used for the synthesis of a composite powder of Li 2 FeP 2 O 7 and carbon. The properties of carbon-containing and carbon-free powders are studied by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) including Rietveld refinement, Mössbauer spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), galvanostatic cycling, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The structure of both powders is refined in a monoclinic framework (space group P2 1 /c). The structural refinement and Mössbauer spectroscopy reveal different degrees of partial occupancy of mixed-occupied sites by lithium. Electrochemical measurements show that the in situ formation of carbon improves capacity (90% of 1-electron theoretical capacity) through decreased charge-transfer resistance. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

AB - The advances in nanotechnology are directed towards the development of new theranostic agents based on magnetic nanoparticles that can be used for both cancer detection and treatment. In this study, 2,3-dicarboxypropane-1,1-diphosphonic acid-coated magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3O4-DPD MNPs) were evaluated for their theranostic application using different methods. The magnetic hyperthermia efficiency of the Fe3O4-DPD MNPs was investigated in saline solution with ionic strengths between 0.05 and 1.0 mol dm(-3). For a better understanding of hyperthermia, the behavior of Fe3O4-DPD MNPs under a non-alternating magnetic field was studied, and the transparency of the sample was measured. Furthermore, the radiotracer method using the radionuclides Tc-99m and Y-90 was applied as a reliable and powerful method for evaluating the in vivo behavior of a nanoprobe; a high radiolabeling yield (>93%), in vitro and in vivo stability of the radiolabeled nanoparticles and high heating effect were observed, thus paving the way for the possible theranostic applications of Fe3O4-DPD MNPs.

AB - Magnetic and non-magnetic macroporous crosslinked copolymers of glycidyl methacrylate and trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate were prepared by suspension copolymerization and functionalized with diethylenetriamine. The samples were characterized by mercury porosimetry, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis (FTIR-ATR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and SQUID magnetometry. The FTIR-ATR analysis of synthesized magnetic nanocomposites confirmed the presence of magnetite and successful amino-functionalization. Non-functionalized and amino-functionalized nanocomposites exhibited superparamagnetic behavior at 300 K, with a saturation magnetization of 5.0 emu/g and 2.9 emu/g, respectively. TEM analysis of the magnetic nanocomposite has shown that magnetic nanoparticles were homogeneously dispersed in the polymer matrix. It was demonstrated that incorporation of magnetic nanoparticles enhanced the thermal stability of the magnetic nanocomposite in comparison to the initial non-magnetic macroporous copolymer. © 2019, Association of Chemists and Chemical Engineers of Serbia. abstract = "Magnetic and non-magnetic macroporous crosslinked copolymers of glycidyl methacrylate and trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate were prepared by suspension copolymerization and functionalized with diethylenetriamine. AB - The main goal of this research has been to investigate for the first time the effects of fluorination on the crystal structure, magnetic, and electrochemical properties of the P2-type NaxCoO2 powder. Sodium cobalt oxide with a P2-type structure is synthesized by a modified solid-state reaction consisting of alternating processes of rapid heating up to 750 °C and rapid cooling to the room temperature. The obtained powder is fluorinated using a gas-solid reaction with NH4HF2 as fluorinating agent. Fluorination causes a decrease of sodium content in the parent phase with the concurrent formation of the minor phases of Na2CO3 and NaF. The structure of NaxCoO2 in both powders is refined in P63/mmc space group. The results of the Rietveld refinement combined with the findings from the XPS measurements confirm the Na0.76CoO2 and Na0.44CoO1.96F0.04 stoichiometries for the pristine and fluorinated powders, respectively, which indicates that 4 at.% of fluorine ions per formula unit are incorporated in the structure. Preliminary electrochemical investigations have revealed an improved charge/discharge performance. The influence of fluorination on morphology and magnetic properties has also been examined. © 2018 Elsevier B.V.

AB - In this work, we present the magnetic and structural properties of α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles synthesized by the hydrothermal synthesis method. XRD, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy indicate that the samples consist of single-phase α-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles. A microstructural analysis by TEM and SEM shows: (i) irregular nanoparticles (∼50 nm), (ii) plate-like nanoparticles (with thickness t∼10 nm and diameter d∼50–80 nm) and (iii) microsized ellipsoid 3D superstructures (with length l∼3.5 and diameter d∼1.5 μm) composed of nanosized building blocks (∼50 nm). We used circularity, elongation and convexity measures to quantitatively analyze the shape of the particles. Irregular hematite nanoparticles were synthesized using a water solution of ferric precursor and sodium acetate during the hydrothermal reaction (reaction conditions: T = 180 °C, t = 12 h). The same hydrothermal reaction temperature, reaction duration and ferric precursor (without sodium acetate) were used for synthesizing hematite ellipsoid 3D superstructures. Addition of urea and glycine surfactants in hydrothermal reaction resulted in the formation of nanoplate hematite particles. The role of these surfactants on the structure and morphology of the particles was also investigated. Magnetic measurements at the room temperature displayed a wide range of coercivities, from H C = 73 Oe for irregular nanoparticles, H C = 689 Oe for nanoplates to H C = 2688 Oe for hematite ellipsoid 3D superstructures. The measured coercivity for the ellipsoid superstructure was about 35 times higher than in the case of irregular hematite nanoparticles and about 4 times than the coercivity of hematite nanoplates. Magnetic properties of synthesized samples were related to their structure and morphology. We conclude that shape anisotropy influenced enhancement of the coercivity in hematite nanoplates whereas hematite ellipsoid 3D superstructure (nanoparticle clusters) induced the formation of multidomain magnetic structure and highest coercivity revealing its superior structure for enhanced magnetic properties. The synthesized hematite nanoparticle structures exhibit low cytotoxicity levels on the human lung fibroblasts (MRC5) cell line demonstrating a safe use of these nanoparticles for practical applications. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.
