AB - The polymer nanocomposite ZnS/Poly (methylmethacrylate) was prepared by the solution casting method and its structural and optical properties were investigated using XRD, SEM, TEM, HRTEM, and Raman spectroscopy. The basic material, ZnS, has the cubic structure and its crystallite size was estimated to be 2.3 nm, which implies that a strong confinement regime is in effect. Analysis of Raman spectra was performed using the fitting procedure based on effective medium theory. As a result, the surface optical phonon (SOP) mode was detected. It was found that the shape and position of the SOP mode depend on the type of the composite. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

AB - Highly ordered, anodically grown TiO 2 nanotubes on titanium supports were annealed in ammonia atmosphere in order to incorporate nitrogen doping (≤2 at.%) in the titanium oxide lattice. FESEM micrographs revealed nanotubes with an average outer diameter of 101.5 ± 1.5 nm and an average wall thickness of about 13 nm. Anatase crystals were formed inside the tubes after annealing in ammonia atmosphere for 30 min. With further annealing, rutile peaks appeared due to the thermal oxidation of the foil and rise as the duration of heat treatment was increased. The concentration and chemical nature of nitrogen in the nanotube arrays can be correlated to the optical response of dry-pressed heterojunctions of doped TiO 2 /CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 single crystals. The N-TiO 2 /perovskite heterojunction with the highest amount of interstitial nitrogen exhibited an improved photocurrent, indicating the importance of the semiconductor doping-based heterojunction optimization strategies to deliver competitive levels of halide perovskite-based optoelectronic devices to be envisioned for urban infrastructures. © 2019

AB - The ∼60 nm wide and ∼2 μm long TiO2 nanotubes were obtained by anodization of Ti films sputtered on F-doped tin oxide glass. For N-doping the samples were annealed in ammonia atmosphere. The effect of pre- and post-annealing in air on the nature and amount of incorporated N was studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. By measuring the absorption spectra of the obtained samples and interpreting the corresponding Tauc plots it was shown that the sample annealed just in ammonia showed the highest visible light absorption even after sputtering cleaning and a decrease of N amount from 3.8% to 1%. Pre and/or post annealing in air led to smaller amount of incorporated N, that caused less pronounced absorption enhancement and smaller band gap narrowing compared to the sample annealed only in ammonia. By fitting of N 1 s line, the contribution that was assigned to substitutional N was detected only in the samples that did not sustained post-annealing. The study showed that post-annealing in air might lead to partial conversion of N atoms in TiO2 to oxidized nitrogen species that are easily removed with sputtering. It is also possible that substitutional nitrogen was suppressed by oxygen from air to move to interstitial site. Weakly bonded NOx surface species, which are cleaned away by sputtering, can be removed by post-annealing in air. Those surface species could act as sensitizers and when their amounts are reduced, the core absorption properties, as a result of interstitial incorporation of N in TiO2 structure, were revealed. Much lower visible light sensitization was achieved in the case of pre-annealed sample in comparison to sample without pre-annealing, regardless the same quantity and type of incorporated nitrogen.

AB - Processing and characterization of polymer nanocomposites based on poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix with embedded core-shell CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QD's) were presented in this work. The aim is to preserve the optical activity of QD's in nanocomposite processing with improved mechanical properties. The modification of QD's CdSe/ZnS-PMMA interface was achieved with 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS). Nanocomposites were processed by solution casting. The samples of pure PMMA, and composites with unmodified and silane modified QD's CdSe/ZnS were processed. FTIR analysis revealed modification of QD's with silane and characteristic bonding with PMMA matrix. Raman spectrum confirms a presence of alloyed layer at the core-shell interface. Time-resolved laser induced fluorescence measurements confirmed slight blue shift in QD's CdSe/ZnS-PMMA composite without interface modification, while there was a slight red shift with modified particles. Oxidation effects in quantum dots were removed with the use of PMMA as a host, and the core remained active, which was confirmed with FTIR analysis and time-resolved laser induced fluorescence measurements. © 2019

AB - This study presents preparation and characterization of ethyl cellulose based nanocomposites. Successful use of simple solvent casting technique provided nanocomposites with high loads of barium ferrite magnetic nanopowder in the polymer matrix, promising significant improvement of mechanical properties. Investigation of morphology revealed formation of agglomerates that are still on nanoscopic level. Nanocomposite thin films with a higher content of the magnetic powder showed substantial enhancement of break strength, elongation and microhardness compared to the pure ethyl cellulose, which was the primary aim of this research.

AB - Natural filtration material tuff (T) was modified by coating with nano-sized magnetite. The grain fraction of 0.6–1.9 mm was submitted to hydrothermal synthesis of magnetite. Thus formed magnetite modified tuff (MMT) was characterized in terms of Fe-content, N2 adsorption- desorption isotherm, SEM, zeta potential-pH analyses and adsorption behavior towards phosphates/arsenates in batch and column conditions. Elemental analysis showed that 36.54 mg g−1 of magnetite was attached to the porous tuff grains. This modification changed pore structure and specific surface area. An increase of cca 35% in Sp value was obtained. Batch experiments proved that MMT was 4-5 times more efficient in removal of phosphates/arsenates than non-modified T. The maximum sorption capacities of phosphates calculated based on Langmuir equation were 0.45 and 1.91 mg g−1, while those for arsenate were 0.551 m g−1 and 2.36 mg g−1 for T and MMT, respectively. The intra-particle diffusion model was the most suited for describing the adsorption process of phosphate and arsenate onto MMT. Fixed-bed column data corroborated batch results, i.e. MMT was 6 times superior in contaminant adsorption than T. Modification with magnetite improved T potential for usage in water treatment applications: its filtration ability remained unchanged, while adsorption capacity for phosphates/arsenates removal was improved. © 2019 The Society of Powder Technology Japan

AB - A facile synthesis was employed for three polyhedral oligo silsequioxanes (POSS), obtaining incompletely condensed structures with fern-like and cubic morphologies. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR) indicated the successful synthesis of the proposed POSS structures. The hydroxyl groups affected the manner and type of POSS morphology, as seen under a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a transmission electron microscope (TEM). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) showed the availability of surface hydroxyl groups that contributed to the formation of a higher amount of char residue, as found from TGA analysis. The highest decomposition temperature (281 °C) and the least char residue were found for a cross-linkable POSS, obtained by esterification of the hydroxyl groups with methacryloyl chloride. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

AB - Alumina-based compounds have many technological applications and attract great attention even after decades of investigation, due to their good chemical, electrical, and mechanical properties. A mixture of several alumina modifications (α-, κ-, γ-Al2O3) doped with 1 wt% of Mn2O3 was used for this experiment. The powder was mechanically activated for 60 min in an ethanol medium. After compaction, green bodies were sintered in the temperature range from 1200 to 1400 °C. Microstructures of the obtained specimens were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The influence of morphological changes on electrical and mechanical properties was examined in detail. We have developed a test fixture and corresponding software for measurement of the relative dielectric permittivity and the loss tangent of ceramic specimens. This new method overcomes the problems of dimensions and shape of samples, as well as the problem of applying silver paste. The accuracy is around 2% for ε'r and 0.003 for tanδ. We demonstrate that the mechanical activation (MA) has the dominant influence on lowering the characteristic temperatures and microstructure development, which further leads to increased permittivity and tensile strength.

AB - To contribute to the knowledge on the influence of synthesis procedure on the intercalation kinetics of lithium ions into phospho-olivines, LiFePO4/C composite samples (LFPC) were synthesized in two ways, the first one in a sol-gel procedure (SG), and the other in a solid-state reaction (SS). The X-ray diffractograms (XRD) of both samples overlapped with that of pure LiFePO4, taken from the crystallographic database. Scanning electron microscopy pictures indicated the high degree of interparticle sintering, which caused a considerable agglomerate growth. The results of potentiodynamic measurements in aqueous LiNO3 solution revealed that for SS sample, three times higher initial capacity from that of SG one, (amounting to 74 mAh g−1 at 5 mV s−1). However, capacity fade on rising scan rate is much more expressed for SS sample than for SG one. We suggest that a different degree of material utilization due to the incomplete coverage of olivine particles by carbon explains this difference. The technique of separation of diffusion and capacitance currents was applied in a kinetic analysis, but it was shown to be inappropriate. We suggest the inapplicability of classic CV theory to the intercalation system accompanied by phase transition. Instead, a model of ohmic resistance determination of process kinetics was considered. LFPC-SS sample delivers three times larger capacity in LiNO3, amounting to 74 mAh g−1 at 1 mV s−1.

AB - Natural and acid-activated sepiolites, functionalized by covalent grafting of [3-(2-aminoethylamino) propyl]trimethoxy-silane were used as adsorbents for the removal of an anionic Reactive Orange 16 dye from aqueous solutions. The influence of initial pH (pHi) on the adsorption was first investigated in comparison with the adsorption onto unmodified sepiolites; then the dye removal process by modified samples was subjected to kinetic and equilibrium studies at pHi = 2.0 or 5.0, at different temperatures. Results showed that the adsorption of dye was favorable at lower pHi and at higher temperatures, in terms of adsorption capacity and rate of adsorption. The binding sites on the adsorbents surfaces were considered to be protonated amine groups, which play a role in the electrostatic interactions with the dye anions at pHi = 2.0. Formation of hydrogen bonds between hydrogen from amine groups and oxygen from the dye and van der Waals forces were proposed as the mechanisms of adsorption at pHi = 5.0. The adsorption kinetics was well fitted to the pseudo-second- order kinetic model, while the equilibrium adsorption data were well correlated with the Sips isotherm. The adsorption capacity of both modified sepiolites was much higher than of the parent samples, whereas the capacity of the functionalized acid-activated sepiolite was higher (~172 mg/g) than of the functionalized natural sepiolite (~158 mg/g) at 298 K, pHi 5.0.

AB - In the present study the commercial multifunctional fatty acid polyamidoamine (PAA) was for the first time simultaneously applied as a curing agent and clay modifier for epoxy/clay nanocomposites (NC) based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A. The montmorillonite (Cloisite®Na + ) was modified with different quantities of partially and fully protonated polyamidoamine. The NCs with 0.5 wt% novel organoclay were prepared by solution intercalation method. The major aims of this paper are investigations of the effects of the composition of PAA modified clays on structure, mechanical, barrier properties and corrosion stability on steel substrates of NCs were studied. The thermogravimetric, flame photometry and X-ray diffraction analyses confirmed the efficient modification of clay surface with polyamidoamine, predominantly located within layers. The NCs exhibited an intercalated/exfoliated morphology and the presence of free amino groups and increased content of modifier facilitated dispersion of clay particles within the polymer matrix, as shown by electron microscopy techniques (SEM, TEM). Under an optimized loading of PAA (molar quantity of total amino groups per clay cation exchange capacity of 1.75), the layers in stacks were separated by 5.0 nm and high number of individual layers was present in NC. Clay modified by PAA with free amino groups showed increased storage modulus in the rubbery state, glass transition temperature of NCs, while dumping factor was decreased. The tensile test confirmed that introduction of flexible modifier on the epoxy/clay interface lead to increase in the ultimate tensile strenght and elongation at break by 31% and toughness up to 83%. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and permeability tests proved the pronounced barrier effect of clay particles against corrosive species and water vapor when high dispersion degree of clay in NC was achieved. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

AB - Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were synthesized by in situ electrochemical reduction of Ag+ ions in poly(vinyl alcohol)/chitosan/graphene (PVA/CHI/Gr) hydrogel matrices with different concentrations of chitosan. The physicochemical properties of nanocomposite hydrogels were investigated by UV–vis spectroscopy (UV–vis), dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermal characteristics were determined by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and mechanical properties were measured by tensile test. The swelling studies were carried out in phosphate buffer to simulate natural physiological environment and data were fitted by several kinetic models to determine the diffusion mechanism and diffusion coefficients of the swelling medium through the hydrogel matrices. It was shown that the presence of silver nanoparticles increased the uptake capability and equilibrium swelling degree of the composite hydrogels. The antibacterial activity was confirmed against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, while the hydrogels without AgNPs exhibited antibacterial properties due to the presence of chitosan. With the addition of AgNPs, the samples showed stronger activity and fast reduction in the number of colonies, confirming the synergistic effect of chitosan and AgNPs on the antibacterial activity. © 2019

AB - In this work an attempt was made to produce epoxy coating doped with ceria (CeO2) and/or zirconia (ZrO2) nanoparticles, in single step electrophoretric deposition process. Deposition was carried out on AA6060 cataforetically from epoxy resin suspension containing synthesized stable aqueous colloidal dispersions (sols) of CeO2 and ZrO2. The influence of ceria and zirconia nanoparticles on the physicochemical characteristics of epoxy coatings was evaluated by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and adhesion measurements, while their corrosion stability during immersion in 0.5 M NaCl solution was monitored by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. All ceria and/or zirconia containing coatings showed better corrosion stability and adhesion than pure epoxy coating, while between doped epoxy coatings one with CeO2/ZrO2 exhhibited the greatest values of charge-transfer resistance due to synergetic effect of both types of added nanoparticles. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

AB - In this work, we provide a facile path for the preparation of wound dressing materials with improved characteristics based on biocompatible chitosan and poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogels with embedded silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as a potent antimicrobial agent. The hydrogels were prepared via freezing-thawing method, whereas AgNPs were synthesized via an in situ electrochemical route. The excellent physicochemical properties of the obtained nanocomposite hydrogels were validated using different spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. The formation of sub-10 nm AgNPs was confirmed by UV–visible spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. Swelling and silver release profiles were validated using several diffusion models. abstract = "In this work, we provide a facile path for the preparation of wound dressing materials with improved characteristics based on biocompatible chitosan and poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogels with embedded silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) as a potent antimicrobial agent. The hydrogels were proven to be non-cytotoxic using MTT test and possessed powerful antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, as determined by test in suspension, which affirmed their feasibility for wound dressing applications. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd",

AB - On the surface of the ultrafine-grained Ti–13Nb–13Zr alloy and the coarse-grained Ti–13Nb–13Zr alloy nanotubular oxide layers were formed by electrochemical anodization in the 1 M H3PO4 + NaF electrolyte in order to evaluate the electrochemical behaviour in the artificial saliva. SEM images showed that homogeneous nanotubular oxide layers could be formed by anodic oxidation of titanium alloys in an electrolyte with fluoride ions. These two titanium alloys, like other materials developed to replace the bone tissue in the human body, have to be highly corrosion resistant, which is one of the most common requirement in terms of the biocompatibility, damage and fracture prevention. The alloys were analysed by means of the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization. The analyzed alloys had good corrosion stability, while nanotubular oxide layer improved their corrosion resistance. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

AB - The major aims of this paper are the investigation of the effects of the mixing procedure and the montmorillonite (Mt) surface modification on the structure (optical microscopy, XRD, TEM, SEM), rheological, mechanical properties (DMA, tensile test) and corrosion stability (electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) of clay mineral/epoxy nanocomposite (CPN). Two series of CPN samples were prepared based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) and polyamidoamine curing agent with three organophilic Mt and sodium-montmorillonite (1 wt%). Mt were mixed with DGEBA solution in the powder (direct mixing) and in the form of dispersions, preswollen in a commercial coating thinner (solution intercalation). The commercial Mt (Cloisite 30B) modified by quaternary alkylammonium ions bearing hydroxyl groups and especially Mt functionalized by primary (HDA(+)-Mt) alkylammonium ions, at loadings close to cation exchange capacity (CRC), were significantly swollen by thinner and further uniformly dispersed into CPN. Meanwhile, low gel volumes in thinner were found for more hydrophobic Mt (Cloisite 15A). The compatibility of Mt with solvents was well described by solubility and Flory-Huggins interaction parameters. In contrast to the direct incorporation of Mt powders in CPN, swelling enhanced intercalation of epoxy matrix into Mt, and for HDA(+)-Mt based CPN interlayer spacing reached 4.4 nm. The usage of HDA(+)-Mt organoclay and solution intercalation procedure provided the highest enhancement in rheological parameters (G, G, of Mt/epoxy dispersions and glassy storage modulus, Youngs modulus and barrier properties of cured CPN.

Mineralized samples exhibited different morphologies and properties when compared to the non-mineralized sample. Antimicrobial testing against Escherichia coil, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans showed that mineralized samples are more efficient than non-mineralized in elimination of microorganisms. The results of this study suggest that bimetallic mineralized alginates could be potentially used as affordable, easy to produce antimicrobial materials. (C) 2017 Elsevier By. All rights reserved.

AB - The modification of the fly ash (FA) by magnetite (M) was performed to obtain FAM adsorbent with improved adsorption efficiency for arsenate removal from water. The novel low cost adsorbents are characterized by liquid nitrogen porosimetry (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Mössbauer spectroscopy (MB) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The optimal conditions and key factors influencing the adsorbent synthesis are assessed using the response surface method (RSM). The adsorption experiment was carried out in a batch system by varying the contact time, temperature, pH, and mass of the adsorbent. The adsorption capacity of the FAM adsorbent for As(V), calculated by Langmuir model, was 19.14 mg g−1. The thermodynamic parameters showed spontaneity of adsorption with low endothermic character. The kinetic data followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model (PSO), and Weber-Morris model indicated intra-particle diffusion as rate limiting step. Alternative to low desorption capability of the FAM was found by five consecutive adsorption/magnetite precipitation processes which gave exhausted layered adsorbent with 65.78 mg g−1 capacity. This research also has shed light on the mechanism of As(V)-ion adsorption, presenting a promising solution for the valorization of a widely abundant industrial waste. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd

AB - In order to optimize and enhance the implant material properties, metallic materials may be modified by severe plastic deformation (SPD) procedures. One of the most attracting SPD methods is high-pressure torsion (HPT), which is method where deformation is obtained mainly by simple shear. In the present study ultrafine-grained titanium (UFG cpTi) and ultrafine-grained Ti-13Nb-13Zr (UFG TNZ) alloy were obtained by high pressure torsion (HPT) under a pressure of 4.1 GPa with a rotational speed of 0.2 rpm up to 5 rotations at room temperature. In order to analyse microstructure of materials before and after HPT process, scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used. The aim of this study was to determine the corrosion resistance of titanium and its alloy after HPT process. Electrochemical measurements were performed in artificial saliva with a pH value of 5.5 at 37 degrees C, in order to simulate the oral environment. The materials were analysed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization. All examined materials showed good corrosion resistance, but results indicate that HPT process can improves corrosion resistance.

AB - One-dimensional (1D) TiO2 nanotubes perpendicular to the substrate were obtained by electrochemical oxidation of titanium foil in an acid electrolyte. In order to alter the crystallinity and the morphology of films the as-anodized amorphous TiO2 nanotube films were sintered at elevated temperatures. The evolution of the morphology was visualized via scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while the crystalline structure was investigated by Xray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The chemical composition was studied by Xray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The effects of crystallinity and morphology of TiO2 nanotube (NTs) films on photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange (MO) in an aqueous solution under UV light irradiation were also investigated. The TiO2 nanotubes sintered at 650 degrees C for 30 min had the highest degree of crystallinity and exhibited the best photocatalytic activity among the studied TiO2 nanotube films.

Electrochemical measurements were performed in artificial saliva with a pH value of 5.5 at 37°C, in order to simulate the oral environment. The materials were analysed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization. All examined materials showed good corrosion resistance, but results indicate that HPT process can improves corrosion resistance. © 2018 The Authors.

AB - Activated carbons with high specific surface area (even above 2000 m(2) g(-1)) and pronounced microporosity are prepared in two-stage process involving conventional carbonization of waste hemp fibers and subsequent activation by potassium hydroxide. Samples with considerably different surface and intrinsic micro-and mesoporous properties are obtained at different carbonization and activation conditions. The improvements of the capacitive properties are found upon increase in carbonization temperature, since it considerably influenced the specific surface area and the content of surface oxygen groups. Cyclic voltammetry experiments reveal the dependence of specific capacitance on the sweep rate due to the characteristic porous structure of the samples. The highest measured value in 1 M H2SO4 solution is 122 F g(-1). The electrochemical impedance data indicates eight-branch transmission line equivalent electric behavior of activated carbons.
