AB - Cavitation erosion of hybrid acrylate composite films with polyhedraloligosilsesquioxanes (POSS) was investigated in this study. The hybrid films aremade with 1, 3 and 5 wt% of POSS reagents containing: (a) hydroxyl (POSS-M),(b) both hydroxyl and allyl (POSS-M-A) and (c) methacryloyl groups (POSS-MCl).Addition of 5 wt% POSS-M-A caused the highest microhardness increase for49.8%, in comparison to the pure matrix material. Cavitation resistance of hybridfilms, estimated as the time-dependent mass loss, was improved by POSS addition.POSS-M-A addition (5 wt%) contributed to 94% lower mass loss comparingto pure Bis-GMA/TEGDMA film. Scanning electron (SEM) and atomic forcemicroscopy (AFM) showed the lowest surface roughness obtained for compositewith POSS-M-A. The improved hardness and wear resistance of the compositefilms indicated that POSS-M-A filler enhanced interfacial adhesion and reinforcingof the Bis-GMA/TEGDMA matrix.

AB - The polymer nanocomposite ZnS/Poly (methylmethacrylate) was prepared by the solution casting method and its structural and optical properties were investigated using XRD, SEM, TEM, HRTEM, and Raman spectroscopy. The basic material, ZnS, has the cubic structure and its crystallite size was estimated to be 2.3 nm, which implies that a strong confinement regime is in effect. Analysis of Raman spectra was performed using the fitting procedure based on effective medium theory. As a result, the surface optical phonon (SOP) mode was detected. It was found that the shape and position of the SOP mode depend on the type of the composite. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

AB - The aim of this research was to obtain a carbon solid residue by the carbonization process of biomass in an inert atmosphere which, through physical activation and chemical treatment (using TEOS - tetraethyl orthosilicate) would allow creation of highly porous and spatially distinct ordered bio-SiC ceramics. The results of carbonization experiments at several operating temperatures and activation of carbons with multiple-cycle treatments TEOS clearly showed the possibility of obtaining SiC nano-structures, after performing the carbothermal reduction at 1400 °C. The increase in the activation temperature and the duration time starts the development of the SiC particles inside the porous structure. The XRPD analysis showed that the major SiC polytype has cubic SiC (β-SiC) structure and remainder is hexagonal SiC polytypic (α-SiC) structure. It was established that the carbons obtained from carbonization of the Platanus orientalis L. plane tree fruit (PTF) precursor and activated at 850 °C with longer holding times (1 and 2 h) exhibit β-SiC (cubic) nano-wires. A possible nano-wires increment mechanism was suggested. The obtained results represent significant contribution in understanding the process as well as the main characteristics of SiC nano-materials and their possible applications.

AB - Goal of this work is to establish technical feasibility and fundamentals of producing activated carbon from plane tree seeds biomass for porous materials derivation. Bio-chars produced via carbonization from plane tree seeds precursor were activated in CO2 at 750 and 850?C, during various residence times. Their surface area and porosity were characterized by N2 adsorption at 77 K. Surface areas of activated carbons can be correlated with kinetics mechanism and activation energy magnitudes of oxidation reaction by CO2, which are closely related to applied activation temperature. Result showed that high temperature activated carbon had higher gas adsorption as compared to activated carbon obtained from lower temperature during two-hour residence time. Breakthrough behavior was detected at 850?C where surface reactions dominate, and it is characterized by autocatalytic kinetic model under designed conditions. Both, temperature and CO2 concentration in vicinity of solid surface effect on breakthrough time of adsorbent. Derived bio-chars are converted into high quality activated carbons, with surface area of 776.55 m2/g, where micro-pores with pore diameters less than 2 nm prevail. Produced activated carbons have properties comparable with commercially available activated carbons, which can be successfully used for removal of harmful gaseous pollutants toward air purification.

AB - Processing and characterization of polymer nanocomposites based on poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix with embedded core-shell CdSe/ZnS quantum dots were investigated. Nanocomposites were obtained via solution casting and electrospinning. FESEM analysis revealed that the processing with electrospinning enables better dispersion of quantum dots. Time-resolved laser induced fluorescence measurements confirmed uniform size of QDs in fibers with the emission at only one wavelength. Oxidation effects in quantum dots were removed with the use of PMMA as a host, and the core remained active, which was confirmed with FTIR analysis and time-resolved laser induced fluorescence measurements.

AB - Thermal properties of acrylate-based composite combined with alumina-based particles were investigated. The composites were made of poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) modified with dimethyl itaconate (DMI) as a matrix. Neat alumina particles (Al2O3) and alumina doped with iron oxide (Al2O3-Fe) modified with 3-aminopropyl-trimethoxylane (AM) and flax oil fatty acid methyl esters (biodiesel - BD) were used as reinforcement. Thermal conductivity measurements showed that composite with alumina particles with the highest alpha phase content had the highest thermal conductivity values. Mechanical properties (tensile strength, modulus of elasticity and elongation at break) were improved by the addition of modified alumina particles to PMMA/DMI matrix. The thermal properties are the most improved for composite with 3 wt.% Al2O3-Fe-AM particles that had the lowest temperature in a crack zone was noticed (10.28 %) compared to PMMA added due to the better stiffness and highest thermal conductivity.

The thermal properties are the most improved for composite with 3 wt.% Al2O3-Fe-AM particles that had the lowest temperature in a crack zone was noticed (10.28 %) compared to PMMA added due to the better stiffness and highest thermal conductivity.",

AB - Basalt as a filler in a polymer-based composite material fulfils the demand of being natural, environment-friendly material for the production of various composite materials. The material could be used as protective layer and the abrasion should be tested in order to evaluate the properties of the material. The cavitation test enables the evaluation of the possible service in conditions that simulate the extensive erosion. The presence of basalt in the matrix improves the resistance to cavitation. The possibility to further improve the material could be obtained using the reinforcement of the matrix itself by incorporation of submicron ceramic particles into the composite. The obtained hybrid composite material with the addition of reinforcement in the matrix further improves the cavitation resistance.

AB - Processing and characterization of polymer nanocomposites based on poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix with embedded core-shell CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QD's) were presented in this work. The aim is to preserve the optical activity of QD's in nanocomposite processing with improved mechanical properties. The modification of QD's CdSe/ZnS-PMMA interface was achieved with 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS). Nanocomposites were processed by solution casting. The samples of pure PMMA, and composites with unmodified and silane modified QD's CdSe/ZnS were processed. FTIR analysis revealed modification of QD's with silane and characteristic bonding with PMMA matrix. Raman spectrum confirms a presence of alloyed layer at the core-shell interface. Time-resolved laser induced fluorescence measurements confirmed slight blue shift in QD's CdSe/ZnS-PMMA composite without interface modification, while there was a slight red shift with modified particles. Oxidation effects in quantum dots were removed with the use of PMMA as a host, and the core remained active, which was confirmed with FTIR analysis and time-resolved laser induced fluorescence measurements. © 2019

AB - This paper investigates the ability of waste apricot (Prunus armeniaca) kernel shells (AKS) bio-char prepared by single-step carbonization process at 850 °C (residence time of 1 h) for possible removal of toxic elements and organic micro-pollutants. The experiment that was performed as well as parameters used proved to be optimal for bio-char production as adsorbing medium, where last issue is validated by multiform material characterization techniques. It has been shown that the produced bio-char possess highly-porous morphology features, with large specific surface area (328.570 m2 g−1). The obtained product was characterized by various pore sizes (including super-micropores and mesopores with maximum pore size of 2.24 nm) structures. Preliminary results are indicated that obtained bio-char can shows increased affinity to possible adsorption of the small organic molecule contaminants upgraded by its physico-chemical properties. Cost estimation of AKS bio-char production substantiated its cost effectiveness and its good physical and chemical properties for future design in batch adsorption and regeneration tests. It was established that AKS produced bio-char was 2.5 times cheaper than the commercially available activated carbon. Bio-char exhibits promising removal performances for potential adsorption of heavy metal and organic micro-pollutants from wastewaters systems, as indicated by material textures and spectroscopy measurements. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

AB - Thermal and kinetics behaviors of the low-rank coals from different annual periods (Kolubara (2015)/(2018) and TENT A (2015)/(2018)) during combustion process in air atmosphere, using simultaneous TGA-DTG-DTA-MS measurements were investigated. The FTIR spectroscopy was used to gain additional information on coals structures. Kolubara and TENT A coals from (2015)/(2018) annual periods show differences in reactivity, where the reason for this demeanor lies in differences in decomposition kinetics of these coals. The conclusions made on the basis of model-based analysis clearly indicate that differences in combustion reaction pathways (especially in transitions from primary to secondary combustion stages) arise from continual changes in physical structure of the coals. It was found that the mineral matter significantly influences on the reactivity of coal during combustion, where this is particularly pronounced for TENT A coal particles. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

AB - This study presents preparation and characterization of ethyl cellulose based nanocomposites. Successful use of simple solvent casting technique provided nanocomposites with high loads of barium ferrite magnetic nanopowder in the polymer matrix, promising significant improvement of mechanical properties. Investigation of morphology revealed formation of agglomerates that are still on nanoscopic level. Nanocomposite thin films with a higher content of the magnetic powder showed substantial enhancement of break strength, elongation and microhardness compared to the pure ethyl cellulose, which was the primary aim of this research.

AB - To obtain flakes like zirconia particles at relatively low temperature, the synthesis method for producing zirconia particles on the surface of salt particles that serve as a template is examined. The produced particles are incorporated as reinforcement in the poly(methyl methacrylate) matrix to obtain a composite material. The particles were characterized by the X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and image analysis. The morphology of the particles and composites was examined using a field emission scanning electron microscope. Composites prepared with synthesized particles were compared to those containing commercial zirconia particles to estimate the possibility of use of synthesized particles as reinforcement. The influence of the 1 wt% of zirconia particles in composite material on the mechanical properties was studied using microhardness measurements and dynamic mechanical analysis. The results obtained show that the addition of 1 wt% of zirconia particles increases the mechanical properties of the composite relative to the pure polymer matrix.

AB - The aim of this article is to review the utilization of various types of waste in geopolimerizationtechnology processes. The geopolymerization represents a process comprising of the dissolution of aluminosilicate solids in a strongly alkaline medium followed by condensation of free alumina-silica oligomers to form a tetrahedral polymeric structure. Advantage of this technology represents the possibility of utilization of any silica and alumina-containing waste material that could be dissolved in an alkaline solution. Production of geopolymers from waste not only provides less raw material consumption but also addresses issues regarding the disposal of wastes. Fly ash, red mud, construction and demolition waste (C&DW), slags, or mine waste are the most utilized waste types in combination with supplementary waste materials according to their characteristics. Conducted investigations showed that the use of various waste materials leads to the production of geopolymers with a broad range of final properties. Despite a high number of published Publications and patents, the large-scale utilization of waste is still missing.

AB - A facile synthesis was employed for three polyhedral oligo silsequioxanes (POSS), obtaining incompletely condensed structures with fern-like and cubic morphologies. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR) indicated the successful synthesis of the proposed POSS structures. The hydroxyl groups affected the manner and type of POSS morphology, as seen under a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and a transmission electron microscope (TEM). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) showed the availability of surface hydroxyl groups that contributed to the formation of a higher amount of char residue, as found from TGA analysis. The highest decomposition temperature (281 °C) and the least char residue were found for a cross-linkable POSS, obtained by esterification of the hydroxyl groups with methacryloyl chloride. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

AB - Ferric oxide doped alumina particles were prepared via the sol-gel method and their performance as Reactive Orange 16 adsorbent was evaluated. The concentrations of the Reactive Orange 16 were monitored using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. The effect of Reactive Orange 16 concentration, adsorbent quantity and pH on the solution decolorization efficiency was analyzed. The efficiency of the Reactive Orange 16 removal using ferric oxide alumina doped exceeded 98% in 20 min at pH=3. The experimental data were fitted to the Langmuir equation better than to the Freundlich one. The pseudo-first-order model fits well with the experimental data for adsorption kinetics. © 2018 Authors. Published by the International Institute for the Science of Sintering.

AB - The aim of this study was to examine the influence of cavitation erosion on the morphology of defects formed on the surfaces of alumina-based materials. The alumina-based samples were exposed to cavitation erosion for 42 min. The damages that occurred were monitored at predefined time intervals by measuring the mass loss and observing the sample surfaces. Digital images of surfaces were processed using an image analysis software package to define morphological characteristics of the damages occurred. The calculated morphological parameters were subjected to analysis by pattern recognition techniques to correlate the appearance of particular morphological characteristics with the behavior of the material during cavitation erosion. The newly established method in describing cavitation erosion which uses pattern recognition approach for treatments of morphological parameters calculated for damages by image analysis tools gave the results efficient for material characterization as the traditional one. © 2018 Elsevier Inc.

AB - It is well known that alumina possesses good mechanical and chemical properties. Nanofibers having alpha - alumina structure was used as reinforcement for metal, polymer and ceramic matrix composites. In this study, three series of nanofibers were prepared. The first series was made from 10 % water solution of the aluminium chloride hydroxide/polyvinyl alcohol with a mass ratio of 5: 1. The other two series were made with the addition of 1 wt.% of MgCl2 or 1 wt.% of FeCl3 regarding the aluminium chloride hydroxide content. Nanofibers were prepared using the electrospinning technique and they were characterized by the TGA/DTA, XRD and FESEM methods. It was proven that addition of FeCl3 into the initial spinning solution lowers the temperature for the corundum structure formation while the addition of MgCl2 results if the formation of mixed oxides that eases the sintering process.

AB - Alumina based particles were prepared from aluminium chloride hydroxide as starting material by sol-gel technique. One series of particles was doped with ferrous oxide. Both series of particles were calcinated at three different temperatures: 700 degrees C, 800 degrees C and 900 degrees C. Poly(methyl methacrylate), PMMA, was used as a matrix and two different types of alumina based particles were added into the matrix to form the composites. All composites consisted of 3 wt% of alumina based particles. The aim of this study was to examine whether and how the temperature of particle calcination affects the microhardness and mechanical properties of the composite. The particles were characterized by the X-ray diffraction (XRD) and physical absorption methods. The morphology of the composites was examined using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM). The microhardness of composites was measured using a traditional Vickers hardness (HV) method. The mechanical characteristics of obtained composites were determined using tensile test and impact testing.

AB - Atom transfer free radical polymerization (ATRP) was employed in a synthesis of graft polymer EVA-g-PMMAwith controlled length of side PMMA chains. Three steps of synthesis: partial hydrolysis of EVA, esterification with chloroacetyl chloride and ATRP grafting were performed to produce EVAOH, macroinitiator EVACl and grafted polymers G8020 (EVA/PMMA = 80/20 wt%) and G6040 (EVA/PMMA = 60/40 wt%). FTIR, Raman and NMR spectroscopy were used in the determination of the chemical structure and modification of EVA. Transmitted light and dark field microscopy showed higher affinity for coil formation of EVA-g-PMMA with longer PMMA side chains, i.e. G6040 compatibilizer. Morphological, thermal and adhesive properties of optical fiber adhesives of graft polymers and polymer blends poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate)-blend-poly(methyl methacrylate) (EVA/PMMA) compatibilized with 1 wt% of EVA-g-PMMA, were studied. Image analysis of SEM micrographs showed effective compatibilization with short grafted chains (G8020) that was indicated by lower porosity characteristics. TG/DTG analysis enabled determination of degree of hydrolysis and amount of chloro-functionalized groups. DSC analysis showed higher thermal stability of G8020 polymer. Single lap joint of adhesives/optical fibers were subjected to adhesive testing and obtained results for maximal force applied and adhesive failure suggested the visible influence of the length of graft chains on adhesion.

abstract = "Atom transfer free radical polymerization (ATRP) was employed in a synthesis of graft polymer EVA-g-PMMAwith controlled length of side PMMA chains. AB - Titania nanofillers were used to reinforce nanofibers in composite mats produced by electrospinning of poly(vinyl butyral) with two different concentrations of polymers. The titania nanoparticles and titania nanotubes were added into an acetic acid/ethanol solution in different contents of 3 and 1wt%, respectively. The effect of the processing system on the morphology of the produced fibers was analyzed. The antimicrobial poly(vinyl butyral) composite fibers with titanium dioxide nanoparticles and titanium dioxide nanotubes were produced by single and multineedle electrospinning systems. This study reports fabrication of composite nanofibrous mats with significant mechanical and antimicrobial properties at a high production speed, which is promising for commercial applications (health care, photocatalysis, protective clothing, etc.). The reported result revealed an outstanding correlation between values of elastic modulus derived from nanoindentation and dynamic mechanical techniques. Copyright (c) 2017 John Wiley and Sons, Ltd.

AB - Bismuth germanium oxide Bi12GeO20 (BGO) has very interesting electrical, optical and magnetic properties. In order to make devices based on this material more flexible, its powder was used for preparing polymer composites. This study reports investigation of the effects of using different solvents and polymers in preparation of BGO composite on the microstructural and optical behaviour of the resulting material. Preparation of such composites by a solution casting method is described. Poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and polystyrene (PS)) were used as matrix materials and acetone and chloroform as solvents. Their microstructure and the quality of BGO dispersion and deaggregation in polymer matrix were analyzed by SEM, Raman, XRD and optical spectroscopy. The influence of particle size distribution, their shapes, and concentration on the optical transmission is calculated based on Mie scattering theory and discussed, too. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. AB - Influence of the addition of three different non-metallic fractions (NMF), obtained by processing of printed circuit boards (PCBs), on the mechanical and thermal properties of unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) based composites were studied in this paper. UPR, based on products of PET depolymerization, and NMF were characterized using FTIR, NMR, optical microscopy and SEM/EDS analysis. Cross-linking density (v), storage modulus (G), damping factor (tan delta) and glass transition temperature (T-g) of the composites were determined from the DMA testing. Tensile (sigma(t)) and flexural (sigma(f)) strength, and micro Vickers hardness indicated good composite performance under static load. Thermal and flame resistant properties were analyzed by TGA/DTG and UL-94 flammability test whereby V-2 category of appropriate composite was achieved. Composites with satisfactory mechanical and thermal properties reflected synergetic effect of constituents obtained from waste materials. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - The surface defects on alumina-based refractory arising from thermal shock were studied using image analysis and statistical tools. Alumina-based refractory specimens were prepared by adding a different amount of fibers into their original composition and compacted on different pressures. Obtained specimens were subjected to thermal shock, and induced surface defects were characterized by their morphological parameters determined using the image analysis procedure. The influence of preparation conditions on the surface defects morphology was studied using principle component analysis. It was shown that morphological parameters of defects vary corresponding to the composition and preparation conditions of ceramic material.
