AB - Iron oxide nanoparticles (IONP) with different distinctive morphologies (spherical, cubic, flower-like and needles) were utilized for modification of screen-printed carbon electrodes (SPCE) to be used for synthetic organic dye degradation by an electrochemical approach. This platform was implemented for removal of the synthetic organic dye, Reactive Black 5 (RB5) in aqueous solution. Modified SPCE with spherically shaped IONP (IONS) had the highest dye removal efficiency. Thus, IONS were then used for surface decoration of the most common carbon-based materials (graphene, graphene oxide, carboxylated graphene, graphene nanoribbons, graphene nanoplatelets, single- and multi-wall carbon nanotubes), and the nanocomposites formed were deposited on the electrode surfaces. Using IONS/graphene composite (IONS@GN) for electrode modification resulted in the best effect. Removal of RB5 with this electrode was 51% better in comparison with bare SPCE, reducing the time required for complete dye degradation from 61 to 30 min Using IONS-modified SPCE, total RB5 removal occurred in 51 min, improving the performance by 16% over that of bare SPCE. The effects determined, i.e., the best IONP morphology and best type of carbon-based material for nanocomposite formation to enhance RB5 removal will provide guidelines for further modifications of SPCE with nanomaterials and nanocomposites, for application of this electrochemical approach in the degradation of organic pollutants. © 2020 The Author(s). AB - Diagnosis and treatment of some important diseased and metabolic disorders is based on successful detection of albumin. In this work, we aim to develop a simple immunosensor for the detection of human serum albumin in biological fluids. Anti-human albumin antibody was covalently attached to the activated surface of screen-printed carbon electrodes enriched with carboxyl graphene/gold nanoparticles composite. Microstructure (TEM, FE-SEM, XRD) and electrochemical (CV, EIS) characterization methods were used to investigate composite properties and to confirm the successful modification of the electrodes. Under the optimal conditions, linear working range and limit of detection were 2.5–500 μg/mL and 1.55 μg/mL, respectively. Additionally, the effect of some possibly interfering compounds was investigated and the immunosensor was used for real sample analysis. The results showed that the sensor exhibited accurate, precise and sensitive characteristics and can be promising replacement to the convention methods for albumin detection in clinical practice.

AB - Mefenamic acid and indomethacin, medicaments belonging to the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents, were determined separately and simultaneously at anodically prepared BDDE. Differential pulse voltammetry was used to establish simple and fast analytical procedure based on electrooxidation of mefenamic acid at 0.6 V and indomethacin at 1.0 V (and 1.1 V). At optimal conditions, it was suitable for highly sensitive and selective determination of these compounds with LODs comparable to previously reported modified electrodes. Additionally, considering the importance of these compounds, we proposed precise and accurate quantification of these species based on green and simple pre-treatable electrochemical sensor. The effect of interfering agents (tablet ingredients and vitamins) was appeared to be negligibly confirming a favourable selectivity of the method. The proposed method was analytically applied by simultaneously determining mefenamic acid and indomethacin in pharmaceutical formulations. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.

AB - Designated as the most harmful for health, PM2.5 aerosol fraction was a subject of our study. It was collected for all four seasons during 2014/15 in the suburban area of Belgrade (Serbia) and analysed for Al, Si, P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Br, As, Ba and Pb elements and for NH4+, NO3− and SO42− ions by particle-induced X-ray emission and ion chromatography techniques, respectively. Obtained concentrations have been treated by a combination of several receptor-oriented models to reveal source contributions to the suburban PM2.5 at different spatial scales. Applied positive matrix factorization analysis indicated five main groups of emission sources: biomass burning (14.5%), traffic (3.9%), regional combustion/secondary sulphates (28.8%), local combustion/secondary nitrates (29.7%) and soil (5.4%). Local heating units had been pointed out as dominant contributors by long-range transport and ground-wind circulation analyses. Air masses circulating over the Balkan Peninsula denoted regional emissions as responsible for the high concentrations of secondary sulphates. Local and long-range transport analyses combined suggested that the BB and the LC/NO3 originated from the wider urban area. Several Saharan dust episodes were detected as well. Presented results might be a basis for the development of air pollution mitigation strategies in the continental Balkan area, considered one of the most polluted and under-investigated European regions.

The enzyme amidase A was used for the first time as a recognition element. Inkjet-printed CNT electrodes served as a basis for the construction of a biosensor that enables droplet detection using 5 μL sample volume. The biosensor showed high selectivity, sensitivity, a low detection limit of 0.18 μM and a wide working linear range from 1 to 100 μM. The proposed approach allows fast and reliable detection of acetaminophen in biological fluids with negligible matrix effect and remarkable reproducibility. © 2019 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. AB - Herein we report effects of partial substitution of Fe3+ by Y3+ in magnetite (Fe3O4) on morphology and inorganic arsenic species adsorption efficiency of the Fe3-xYxO4 nanoparticles formed. The series of Fe3-xYxO4 (x = 0.00, 0.042 and 0.084, labeled as Y00, Y05 and Y10, respectively) was synthesized using co-precipitation followed by microwave-hydrothermal treatment (MW) at 200 degrees C. With increase of yttrium content (x value), both the morphological inhomogeneity of the samples and the fraction of spinel nanorods as compared to spinel pseudospherical particles increased. By both transmission electron microscopy and x-ray powder diffraction analyses, it was determined that the direction of growth of the spinel nanorods is along the [110] crystallographic direction. The Fe3-xYxO4 affinities of adsorption toward the inorganic arsenic species, As(III) (arsenite, AsO33-) and As(V) (arsenate, AsO43-), were investigated. Increased Y3+ content related to changes in sample morphology was followed by a decrease of As(III) removal efficiency and vice versa for As(V). The increase in Y3+ content, in addition to increasing the adsorption capacity for As(V), significantly expanded the optimum pH range for the maximum removal and decreased the contact time for necessary 50% removal (t(1/2)) of As(V) (Y00: pH 2-3, t(1/2) = 3.12 min; Y05: pH 2-6, t(1/2) = 2.12 min and Y10: pH 2-10, t(1/2) = 1.12 min). The results point to incorporation of Y3+ in the crystal lattice of magnetite, inducing nanorod spinel structure formation with significant changes in sorption properties important for the removal of inorganic arsenic from waters.

abstract = "Herein we report effects of partial substitution of Fe3+ by Y3+ in magnetite (Fe3O4) on morphology and inorganic arsenic species adsorption efficiency of the Fe3-xYxO4 nanoparticles formed. The results point to incorporation of Y3+ in the crystal lattice of magnetite, inducing nanorod spinel structure formation with significant changes in sorption properties important for the removal of inorganic arsenic from waters.",

AB - An electrochemical sensor is described for the determination of L-dopa (levodopa; 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine). An inkjet-printed carbon nanotube (IJPCNT) electrode was modified with manganese dioxide microspheres by drop-casting. They coating was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction. The sensor, best operated at a working voltage of 0.3 V, has a linear response in the 0.1 to 10 μM L-dopa concentration range, a 54 nM detection limit, excellent reproducibility, repeatability and selectivity. The amperometric approach was applied to the determination of L-dopa in spiked biological fluids and displayed satisfactory accuracy and precision. AB - In present work boron doped diamond (BDD) electrode was applied for studying electrochemical behavior, as well as for quantitative determination of natural alkaloid, tubocurarine (arrow poison/ TUB). Electrochemical behavior was investigated using several organic solvents and aqueous buffers, at different pHs, as supporting electrolytes. After selection of the most appropriate supporting electrolyte and investigation of its electrochemical behavior, analytical procedures for quantitative analysis of TUB were developed in an acetonitrile/methanol (80:20) mixture and in 1 mol L−1 nitric acid, which had linear quantification ranges from 4 × 10−6 to 1 × 10−4 mol L−1 (LOD = 3.07 × 10−6 mol L−1) and 4 × 10−6 to 9 × 10−5 mol L−1 (LOD = 2.45 × 10−6 mol L−1 and 5.28 × 10−7 mol L−1, depending on the selected peak), respectively. The oxidation mechanism of TUB was proposed from the theoretical aspect. Remarkable selectivity and good sensitivity were obtained after the TUB quantification method was optimized, allowing application of the developed method for TUB quantification in biological fluids, with excellent reproducibility, accuracy and precision.

AB - The subject of this study was a mid-term evaluation of cardiovascular, respiratory and total non-accidental mortalities attributed to exposure to PM 10 , O 3 , NO 2 and SO 2 in the cities of Belgrade, Novi Sad and Nis, representing about 25% of the population of Serbia. The analysis was performed using AirQ+ modelling, by linking annual baseline mortality rates and daily pollutant exposure levels in 2011–2015 based on the cause-specific concentration–response functions. Estimated shares of annual mortality attributed to these pollutants, thanks to harmonizing of assessment methodologies, may stand next to and be compared with results obtained in previously conducted studies. The obtained premature deaths estimated within 95% confidence interval (in parentheses) and attributed to PM 10 , O 3 , NO 2 and SO 2 exposure were 2013 (1344–2677), 1411 (685–2086), 831 (555–1107) and 443 (333–530), respectively. Total non-accidental mortalities due to O 3 and NO 2 exposure were in the range of findings for other regions, while mortalities attributed to PM 10 were higher. It was also found that cardiovascular mortality caused by these four pollutants was higher than respiratory mortality. Based on our results, efficient implementation of abatement strategies that would reduce PM 10 , O 3 and SO 2 concentrations to daily air quality limit values set by the World Health Organization could respectively prevent, in the three cities together, about 233 (156–310), 40 (19–59) and 71 (53–85) premature deaths per year. © 2019, Islamic Azad University (IAU).

AB - Bentazone (BZ) is selective contact-past herbicide with suspected reproductive toxicity potential for human due to possible contamination of ground and surface waters. This work presents simple, rapid, sensitive and accurate determination of bentazone at unmodified boron-doped diamond electrode, using differential pulse voltammetry in Britton-Robinson buffer (pH 4, oxidation peak at 1.0 V). Under optimized DPV conditions linear calibration curve was obtained for range of 2 to 100 mu M, with a detection limit of 0.5 mu M. The effect of possible interfering agents is negligible, confirming good selectivity of the method. The method was successfully applied to determination of bentazone in spiked river water samples. This electrochemical determination of bentazone represents a favorable alternative to other used time-consuming and expensive analytical techniques and procedures.

AB - The degradation of two sulfonylurea herbicides, nicosulfuron and thifensulfuron methyl in water by chlorine dioxide, was studied for the first time in this paper. In order to examine the optimal parameters for degradation of both herbicides, degradation was investigated under light or dark conditions with different amount of chlorine dioxide, different degradation periods, and at different pH values. Degradation efficiency of herbicides was monitored using high-performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array detection (HPLC-DAD). The degradation products were analyzed by gas chromatography with triple quadrupole mass detector (GC–QQQ). Three products were identified after degradation of nicosulfuron and two products after degradation of thifensulfuron methyl. Total organic analysis (TOC) gave insight into some differences in degradation mechanisms and degrees of mineralization after degradation of the herbicides using chlorine dioxide. A simple mechanism of herbicide degradation was proposed. Acute toxicity tests were performed on the products produced after degradation with chlorine dioxide, and the results showed that the degradation products were less toxic than the parent compounds. The findings of the present study are very useful for the treatment of wastewaters contaminated with herbicides. © 2018, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

AB - In this work, we aimed to propose a newly synthesized composite material with enhanced electrocatalytic properties as a novel screen-printed sensor for the quantification of NADH. Additionally, the surface was modified with alcohol dehydrogenase for the preparation of an amperometric biosensor for analysis of ethanol. Synthesized material was characterized using several microstructural (FE-SEM, HR-TEM, XRD) and electrochemical (CV, EIS) techniques. The electrochemical response of the tested analytes was investigated as a function of important parameters. Under optimal conditions, the working linear range and limit of detection for ethanol sensing was 1–1800 µM and 0.19 µM, respectively. For NADH, the linear range was from 1 to 1300 µM with limit of detection of 0.52 µM. Moreover, effects of some possible interfering compounds were investigated and the developed procedure was applied to commercial alcoholic beverages. The results obtained showed satisfactory precision and accuracy of the developed method and confirm the proposed approach could be a possible replacement for the currently used techniques for ethanol and NADH quantification.

AB - Ergosterol (Erg) is the major sterol component in the plasma membranes of fungi. The main goal of this work was to develop rapid, reliable, and cost-effective method toward Erg detection based on application of unmodified boron-doped diamond electrode. Several organic solvents were tested (acetonitrile, dimethyformamide, dimethylsulfoxide, dichloromethane), and it was found that best analytical characteristics were achieved using acetonitrile containing 0.1 M tetrabutylammonium hexa-fluorophosphate as supporting electrolyte. Oval shaped and well-defined oxidation peak was recorded at potential of around 1.17 V versus Ag/Ag+ non-aqueous reference electrode. Under optimized experimental conditions, linear working range from 2 to 200 mu M was estimated, with limit of detection of 0.7 mu M, using square wave voltammetry. Negligible effect of possible interfering compound was observed. Proposed methodology was successfully applied for estimation of Erg content in mushrooms extract with satisfactory results in comparison with spectrophotometric procedure. Obtained results clearly show that developed analytical methodology can be adequate replacement for the, up to date, used methods and open-novel approach for ergosterol detection.

AB - This work present a new approach for the detection of relatively new herbicide pethoxamid (POA), a first electrochemical behavior and determination based on its oxidation on boron-doped diamond electrode in Britton-Robinson buffer solution at pH 4. Square wave voltammetric technique was used for quantification of POA at anodic potential of 1.35 V vs reference Ag/AgCl electrode. The proposed electroanalytical method is operational in the linear working range from 3 to 100 μM of POA with a limit of detection of 1.37 μM. The developed analytical procedure was successfully tested for determination of this herbicide in standard/spiked river water samples and commercial herbicide Successor T SE/spiked river water samples, offering a simple, fast and inexpensive alternative way of pesticide determining to chromatographic methods employed for this purpose.

AB - The electrochemical behavior of four dialkyl esters (methyl, ethyl, n-propyl and n-butyl) of (S,S)-α,α ′-(1,2-ethanediyldiimino)- bis[cyclohexanepropanoic acid] with moderate antitumor activity has been studied by cyclic voltammetry. I-E curves recorded at boron-doped diamond electrode in -2.00 < Ep < 0.00 V range show a single oxidative peak located in the -0.95 < Ep,a < -0.52 V region in a form of one-electron wave. The electrochemical processes appear to be irreversible for all compounds except for the compound with methyl substituent which demonstrates well-defined reversible electron transfer. Derivatives with bulkier moieties are easier to oxidize. For all investigated compounds an amine-centered redox process is dominant. Further investigation indicates that electrochemical reaction is diffusion controlled, chemically irreversible process. The results are discussed in terms of linking their electrochemical activity to antitumor effect. © 2018 The Electrochemical Society.

AB - The electrochemical techniques were used to determine the total antioxidant capacity of breast milks and the results were compared with a commonly used spectrophotometric (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, DPPH) method. Breast milk from mothers of preterm infants was monitored in three lactation phases and after storage of expressed milk by monitoring changes in the total antioxidant capacity over a two year period. Statistical analysis showed there was no significant difference between the ability of the three methods to detect changes in breast milk after storage. Either of the electrochemical techniques studied could be successfully used to replace the time-consuming spectrophotometric method and can be applied to clinical trials.

AB - The aim of this study was to establish correlation of chemical composition and antioxidant activity of bilberry plants from Montenegro. Total phenolic, tannin, flavonoid, procyanidin and anthocyanin contents were determined in fruits and leaves extracts using spectrophotometric methods, while the measurements of metal content was carried out in an Inductively Coupled Atomic Emission Spectrometer. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of major phenolics were achieved by HPLC. In the investigated extracts, the most abundant phenolic was chlorogenic acid, followed by protocatechuic acid, while resveratrol, isoquercetin, quecetin and hyperoside were also present in significant quantities. Antioxidant potential was evaluated using two in vitro assays—FRAP and DPPH—being in the accordance with the cyclic voltammetry tests, performed as well. The results revealed that all the investigated extracts were rich in phenolic and essential mineral constituents, with significant antioxidant activity, depending on the polyphenolic and mineral contents, which was confirmed by principal component analysis.

AB - In the present paper, a miniaturized boron-doped diamond electrode (BDDE) is proposed as a progressive electrochemical sensor for simple, fast and reliable quantification of dimethylxanthine alkaloid, theobromine (TB). Using cyclic voltammetry, the studied xanthine provided one well-shaped, irreversible and diffusion-controlled oxidation peak at relatively high potentials (+1.2 V vs. Ag/AgCl/3 M KCl reference electrode) in the presence of 0.1 M H2SO4. After selection of suitable experimental conditions, the linear calibration curves for TB were obtained in the concentration range from 0.99 up to 54.5 μM with the sensitivity of 0.07 μA/μM providing both differential pulse (DPV) and square-wave voltammetric (SWV) techniques, respectively. The elaborated voltammetric protocol yielded low detection limits of 0.42 and 0.51 μM accompanied by adequate intra-day repeatability (relative standard deviation of 2.5 and 1.7%) using DPV and SWV procedure, respectively. The interference study revealed the reasonable selectivity when taking the target food samples into account. The practical applicability of the voltammetric protocol using a miniaturized BDDE was verified in the analysis of six commercially available brands of chocolate products with the determined mass percentages of TB ranging from 0.75 to 2.24% and from 0.69 to 2.15% using DPV and SWV procedure, respectively. The obtained results were also in a good agreement with those achieved by reference titration method with potentiometric indication. The progressive electrochemical sensor based on a miniaturized BDDE has appeared to be an attractive candidate for practical applications in food quality control. Besides, the proposed voltammetric protocol presents advantages when compared to others techniques (e.g. chromatography), concerning simplicity, cost, speed of analysis, waste generation (environmentally friendly) and samples pretreatment (only dilution in electrolyte solution prior to analysis). © 2018 Elsevier B.V.

AB - Herein, an advanced electroanalytical approach for the determination of ibuprofen based on the use of a bare and electrochemically untreated boron-doped diamond electrode is presented. Cyclic voltammetric study revealed that the electrode reaction of the analyte was manifested by the presence of well-shaped irreversible and diffusion-driven oxidation peak at very high potential (+1.75 V vs. Ag/AgCl/3 mol L−1KCl reference electrode) in 1 mol L−1perchloric acid. After optimization of experimental conditions, the peak current of ibuprofen was proportionally linear from 9.49 × 10−7to 6.69 × 10−5mol L−1providing both differential pulse (DPV) and square-wave voltammetric (SWV) techniques, respectively. The elaborated electroanalytical protocol rendered low detection limits of 4.1 × 10−7and 9.3 × 10−7mol L−1in association with favourable intra-day repeatability (relative standard deviation of 3.6 and 4.6%) using DPV and SWV procedures, respectively. The effect of interfering compounds such as ascorbic acid, dopamine, caffeine, uric acid and glucose on the current response of ibuprofen was explored in details. The usefulness of the proposed approach was verified in the analysis of a variety of commercial brands of pharmaceuticals and spiked human urine samples with the significant range of recovery percentages (for pharmaceuticals: 99.8–107.5% and 99.8–105.0% by DPV and SWV, for urine: 95–107% and 97–103% by DPV and SWV). Taking these features into account, the developed protocol may be exploited as a novel, simple and efficient tool in drug quality control analysis and analysis of biological samples. In addition, a bare and electrochemically untreated boron-doped diamond electrode may be applied as a progressive electrochemical sensor and helpful alternative to previously utilized electrochemical platforms in this field.

AB - In this work, the electrochemical oxidation and subsequent determination of uric acid was investigated using boron-doped diamond electrodes with various B/C ratios (0-2000 ppm). The cyclic voltammetric study showed one irreversible oxidation peak at +(1.1-1.25) V (vs. Ag/AgCl/3 M KCl) in the presence of Britton-Robinson buffer (pH 2.25) depending on the boron content. Employing differential pulse voltammetry using the 2000 ppm boron-doped diamond electrode the acquired analytical parameters were as follows: a limit of detection of 7.7 M, a limit of quantification of 26 M and intra-day repeatability (relative standard deviation of 2.9% for n = 15). After performing an interference study, the method was applied to the determination of uric acid in biological samples (human urine). The uric acid concentrations determined in the urine samples were compared with the reference values stated in the literature. The proposed methodology using boron-doped diamond electrodes could find applications in uric acid sensing within clinical, pharmaceutical and environmental analysis.

AB - In this work, for the first time we proposed electrochemical behavior and development of an analytical procedure for quantification of pesticide clomazone. Electrochemical behavior of clomazone's at boron-doped diamond electrode is characterized with irreversible oxidation at potential of around 1.6 V, in Britton-Robinson buffer solution at pH 2. It was found that potential of this oxidation was not pH dependent excluding presence of proton in the electrochemical reaction. Square wave voltammetry method was the most appropriate for clomazone quantification and proposed procedure was successfully applied for determination of clomazone in river water samples. Obtained parameters, detection limit of 0.21 mu M and working linear range from 1 to 100 mu M and satisfied selectivity can indicate that presented results open new field in research of this group of pesticides and offer possible replacement to the sophisticated and expensive chromatographic methods.

AB - In this work, the electrochemical behaviour and the subsequent development of an analytical procedure for quantification of pesticide azamethiphos, using boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode are reported for the first time. It was found that azamethiphos electrochemical behaviour is irreversible oxidation at the potential of around 1.70 V, in 1 M nitric acid (pH 0). Also, it was found that potential of this oxidation was not pH dependent which can be attributed to the no proton involvement in electrochemical reaction on the electrode surface. The square wave voltammetric method was most appropriate for azamethiphos quantification. Under optimised experimental conditions, linear working range from 2 to 100 µM was estimated with the detection limit of 0.45 µM. Negligible effect of the possible interfering compound was observed. The obtained results show that the developed analytical methodology can be an adequate replacement for the, up to date, used methods for detection of organophosphorous pesticide. © 2018, © 2018 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

AB - A simple and fast method for determination of two phenothiazine drugs, chlorpromazine (CPZ) and thioridazine (TDZ), at the boron-doped diamond electrode (BDDE) was proposed. Oxidation peaks on potentials higher than 1 V were used for quantitation of investigated phenothiazines due to better selectivity over common interfering compounds in urine. Differential pulse voltammetry was applied for trace determination of CPZ and TDZ, in Britton-Robinson buffer solution at optimal pH. Under optimized DPV conditions a linear analytical curve was obtained from 1.0x10(-7) to 4.0x10(-5) M with a detection limit of 0.3x10(-7) M (for CPZ) and in the concentration range of 2x10(-7) M to 4.0x10(-5) M, with a detection limit of 1.2x10(-7)M (for TDZ). The applicability of the method was proved by determination of CPZ and TDZ by proposed procedures in spiked urine samples. The electrochemical behavior of those two important tranquilizers in different solvents was described, exploring the possibility of simultaneous determination.

AB - Propolis, as a beneficial natural product, has found application in the food and pharmaceutical industries as a food preservative, active packaging material as well as a main component of propolis containing products. Quality control of propolis has thus gained in importance. We used simple, fast, and low-cost techniques such as UV/Vis spectrophotometry and cyclic voltammetry applied in combination with principal component analysis to confirm the presence of two botanical sub-types of propolis. Cyclic voltammetry, as a green, sensitive, and convenient technique suitable for investigation of chemical profile, together with multivariate chemometrics technique, was used for the first time for characterization and classification of propolis. UV/Vis spectroscopy was applied in two aspects, absorption at certain wavelength for the quantitative determination of analytes, i.e. determination of quality control parameters, and spectral profiles, for the confirmation of the existence of two botanically different poplar types. All investigated Serbian propolis samples were characterized with specific chemical patterns and were classified in two main botanical varieties, so-called orange and blue. The results confirmed that the applied methods have a potential to be used for the discrimination of complex natural products such as propolis.
