AB - The hydrolytic stability of two nano-SiO2-based UF composites with derivates of coumarin (names as K-1 and K-2) was investigated. K-1 is 3-nitro-4-(p-tolylamino)-2H-chromen-2-one and K-2: 4-((3-nitro-2-oxo-2H-chromen-4-yl)amino)benzenesulfonamide. Two types of nano-silica-based urea–formaldehyde (UF), composite materials with a formaldehyde-to-urea (F/U) ratio of 0.8, were synthesized (UF/K-1/SiO2, and UF/K-2/SiO2). The hydrolytic stability of modified UF composite was determined by measuring the mass loss and liberated formaldehyde concentration of modified UF composite after acid hydrolysis. Obtained results showed that the hydrolytic stability of modified resins with derivates of coumarin was enhanced. The formaldehyde emission of modified UF/K-1/SiO2 composite is lower compared with UF/K-2/SiO2 composite. The thermal behavior of materials was studied by non-isothermal thermo-gravimetric analysis and differential thermal gravimetry supported by data from ATR-IR spectroscopy. The shift of temperature values for selected mass losses (T5%) to a high temperature indicates the increase in thermal stability of samples based on UF resin modified with K-2. © 2020, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

AB - Particles of beech wood were treated with hot water at the temperature of 150oC, during 60 min, prior to the pelleting process. The applied hot water pretreatment affected the chemical composition and heating value of particles. Two groups of pellets, designated as PT 10 and PT 20, were produced from treated beech particles, with the moisture content of particles being 10.5 and 20.5 %, respectively. Pellets from nontreated beech particles (PNT) served as controls to assess the hot water pretreatment effects on the pellet properties. Both, the applied pretreatment, and the particle moisture content, affected properties of the obtained pellets. The heating value of PT 10 ad PT 20 pellets has increased for ~6 and 1 %, respectively. The mineral (ash) content in treated pellets decreased for about 24 % in comparison to that in PNT pellets. In addition, the bulk (apparent) density of pellets has increased for 21 % (PT 10) and 10 % (PT 20), as a consequence of the hot water pretreatment of particles. The specific density of PT 10 pellets was for 16 % higher, while the equilibrium moisture content (after conditioning at RH 68 % and 20.1oC) was for about 32 % lower in comparison to the respective properties of PNT pellets.

AB - Mefenamic acid and indomethacin, medicaments belonging to the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents, were determined separately and simultaneously at anodically prepared BDDE. Differential pulse voltammetry was used to establish simple and fast analytical procedure based on electrooxidation of mefenamic acid at 0.6 V and indomethacin at 1.0 V (and 1.1 V). At optimal conditions, it was suitable for highly sensitive and selective determination of these compounds with LODs comparable to previously reported modified electrodes. Additionally, considering the importance of these compounds, we proposed precise and accurate quantification of these species based on green and simple pre-treatable electrochemical sensor. The effect of interfering agents (tablet ingredients and vitamins) was appeared to be negligibly confirming a favourable selectivity of the method. The proposed method was analytically applied by simultaneously determining mefenamic acid and indomethacin in pharmaceutical formulations. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.

AB - The thermal stability of organic-inorganic nano-composites prepared by a two-stage polymerization of urea-formaldehyde resin (UF) with furfuryl alcohol (FA) and TiO2 before and after irradiation has been researched. The two resins of urea-formaldehyde–TiO2 composites, named: UF/TiO2 and UF/TiO2/FA, were synthesized. The thermal stability of obtained materials was studied by non-isothermal thermo-gravimetric analysis (TG), differential thermal gravimetry (DTG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). UF hybrid composites have been irradiated (50 kGy) and after that their radiation stability was evaluated on the basis of thermal behavior. The free formaldehyde (HCOH) percentage in all prepared samples was determined. The minimum percentage values of free formaldehyde (0.04% and 0.03%) for UF/TiO2 and UF/TiO2/FA, respectively, after irradiation dose of 50 kGy are detected. The shift of temperature values for selected mass losses (T10%) to a high temperature indicates the increase in thermal stability of samples based on UF resin modified with FA.

AB - The powder recycled rubber (PRR) can be used as a filler and a modifier for elastomeric materials and asphalt. Composites based on elastomers and recycled rubber powders are a serious challenge for the environment. The main goal of this paper was to study the effect of rubber powder on the mechanical properties of elastomeric composites based on three precursors of the network. Triple blends were prepared using non-polar natural rubber (NR), polyisoprene rubber (BR), and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) (mass ratio 40/40/20). In all rubber compounds, the carbon black (CB)/PRR mass ratio is constant (60). Samples were prepared using two roll mill. The characteristics of hardening (optimum cure time, scorch time, minimum and maximum torque) of rubber mixtures were tested. Tensile strength, modulus at 100% elongation and elongation at break are decreasing with PRR ratio is increasing. It is due to poor adhesion of PRR into NR/BR/SBR/CB matrix. The thermal degradation temperature shifts to a higher temperature up to 5 phr of PRR in NR/BR/SBR/CB rubber blends. Fourier-transform infrared spectra of NR/BR/SBR/CB/PRR samples show that the absorption bands shifted 7–15 cm−1 to higher wavenumbers and confirmed rubber–filler interaction. Morphology was assessed by scanning electron microscopy. POLYM. COMPOS., 40:1307–1314, 2019. © 2018 Society of Plastics Engineers. © 2018 Society of Plastics Engineers

AB - In this applicative work, two types of silica filler were used to increase the adhesion strength between steel and elastomeric hybrid materials based on chlorosulfonated polyethylene rubber (CSM) and polychloroprene rubber (CR) as network precursors. Precipitated silica (PS) with the average size of primary particles 15 nm and diatomaceous earth (DE) with the average size of primary particles 28 μm were used to ascertain differences in metal-elastomer compounds adhesion strength caused by different particle size. The ratio of network precursors in CSM/CR rubber blends was 50:50 (w/w). The filler loading was in the range of 0–35 phr. Characteristics of the obtained composites were examined by combining the cure kinetics, adhesion strength and the dynamic mechanical properties. The viscoelasticity of obtained hybrid materials was assessed by the mechanical spectrometer (in a single cantilever bending mode) in the temperature range from −50 °C to 150 °C using multifrequency mode. AB - This paper presents influence of the type of carbon nanotube functionalization on properties of poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) based nanocomposite materials. For this purpose surface modifications of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were performed by chemical and irradiation techniques, while thermo gravimetric analysis, UV-Visible and Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopies confirmed successful covalent functionalization. Series of PLLA bionanocom-posites with different contents of functionalized MWCNTs (0.7; 1.6; 2.1 wt%), were synthesized via ring-opening solution polymerisation of L-lactide. FT-IR analysis confirmed that grafting of L-lactide, under controlled condition, is possible to perform starting from the surface of functionalized MWCNTs. From differential scanning calorimetry results it was concluded that even low contents of chemically and irradiation functionalized MWCNTs had a significant effect on thermal properties of the prepared nanocomposites, raising the values of melting and glass transition temperatures. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) has shown that the degradation onset temperature for composites with chemically functionalized MWCNTs, was much higher than that for the neat poly(L-lactide) sample and composites with irradiation functionalized MWCNTs. Morphology studies by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicated that poly(L-lactide) covered surfaces and separated functionalized MWCNTs. Good dispersion of carbon nanotubes in polymer matrix enabled conductivity of synthesized materials, as determined by conductivity tests.

AB - This paper reports a simple route for the preparation of graphene/poly(styrene-b-butadiene-b-styrene) (SBS) nanocomposite films employing a vacuum filtration method. Graphene is exfoliated well by an electrochemical procedure and homogeneously dispersed in the polymer matrix. The prepared nanocomposite films were characterized by XRD, Fourier transform IR (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, AFM and SEM. Morphological studies showed that graphene formed a smooth coating over the surface of SBS. The increase in graphene concentration induces the wrinkling of graphene sheets at the composite surface which causes a further increase in surface roughness. The FTIR, Raman and XPS spectra of graphene/SBS nanocomposite films indicate the strong interactions between graphene and the polymer matrix. According to the XRD patterns, introducing SBS into graphene did not modify the graphene structure additionally, i.e. the crystal lattice parameters do not depend on SBS content in graphene/SBS nanocomposite films. The graphene/SBS nanocomposite films also exhibited better hydrophobicity due to the increased surface roughness and lower sheet resistivity (reduced 10 times) compared to exfoliated graphene.

AB - The elastomeric materials based on NR/BR/SBR ternary rubber blend were investigated. The polyisoprene (NR), butadiene (BR) and styrene butadiene (SBR) rubbers were used as network precursors and carbon black (CB) as an active filler (60 phr) for elastomeric materials preparation. For sample preparation, the mass ratio of NR to BR was constant, 1:1, but the SBR content was varied from 0 to 80 phr. The morphological, mechanical and thermal properties of prepared elastomeric materials were determined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), mechanical tensile measurements and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Mechanical properties were assessed before and after thermooxidative aging during 168 h at 100 °C. The values of tensile strength, elongation at break, and hardness decrease up to 40 phr of SBR content and after that are increasing, but abrasion resistance of ternary rubber blends increases. The thermal decomposition temperature obviously shifted to a higher temperature for the sample with 40 phr of SBR. © 2019, CI and CEQ. All rights reserved.

AB - Bentazone (BZ) is selective contact-past herbicide with suspected reproductive toxicity potential for human due to possible contamination of ground and surface waters. This work presents simple, rapid, sensitive and accurate determination of bentazone at unmodified boron-doped diamond electrode, using differential pulse voltammetry in Britton-Robinson buffer (pH 4, oxidation peak at 1.0 V). Under optimized DPV conditions linear calibration curve was obtained for range of 2 to 100 mu M, with a detection limit of 0.5 mu M. The effect of possible interfering agents is negligible, confirming good selectivity of the method. The method was successfully applied to determination of bentazone in spiked river water samples. This electrochemical determination of bentazone represents a favorable alternative to other used time-consuming and expensive analytical techniques and procedures.

AB - The goal of this work was to synthesize and characterize ternary rubber blends based on polyisoprene (natural rubber (NR)), polybutadiene rubber (BR), and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) (NR/BR/SBR = 25/25/50) reinforced with different loading silica (SiO2) nanoparticles (0-100 part per hundred parts of rubber (phr)). The specimens were subjected to thermooxidative aging at 100 degrees C, for two times: at 72 and 168 h, respectively, and then mechanically stretched to fracture by tension with a Zwick 1425 (Zwick GmbH, Ulm, Germany) universal tensile testing machine. Rheological and mechanical properties were used as characterization of the ternary rubber blends. The reinforcing performance of the filler was investigated using rheometric, mechanical, and swelling measurements, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflectance. Hardness, tensile strength, elongation at break, and swelling degree were assessed before and after thermal aging. There was a remarkable decrease in the optimum cure time (t(c90)) and the scorch time (t(s2)), which was associated with a decrease in the cure rate index of (NR/BR/SBR = 25/25/50) ternary rubber blend with 60 phr of filler loading. Interaction between rubber blend and SiO2 nano-filler is confirmed by moving absorption band from 1450 cm(-1) to 1480 cm(-1).

AB - This work present a new approach for the detection of relatively new herbicide pethoxamid (POA), a first electrochemical behavior and determination based on its oxidation on boron-doped diamond electrode in Britton-Robinson buffer solution at pH 4. Square wave voltammetric technique was used for quantification of POA at anodic potential of 1.35 V vs reference Ag/AgCl electrode. The proposed electroanalytical method is operational in the linear working range from 3 to 100 μM of POA with a limit of detection of 1.37 μM. The developed analytical procedure was successfully tested for determination of this herbicide in standard/spiked river water samples and commercial herbicide Successor T SE/spiked river water samples, offering a simple, fast and inexpensive alternative way of pesticide determining to chromatographic methods employed for this purpose.

AB - In this work, for the first time we proposed electrochemical behavior and development of an analytical procedure for quantification of pesticide clomazone. Electrochemical behavior of clomazone's at boron-doped diamond electrode is characterized with irreversible oxidation at potential of around 1.6 V, in Britton-Robinson buffer solution at pH 2. It was found that potential of this oxidation was not pH dependent excluding presence of proton in the electrochemical reaction. Square wave voltammetry method was the most appropriate for clomazone quantification and proposed procedure was successfully applied for determination of clomazone in river water samples. Obtained parameters, detection limit of 0.21 mu M and working linear range from 1 to 100 mu M and satisfied selectivity can indicate that presented results open new field in research of this group of pesticides and offer possible replacement to the sophisticated and expensive chromatographic methods.

AB - In this work, the electrochemical behaviour and the subsequent development of an analytical procedure for quantification of pesticide azamethiphos, using boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode are reported for the first time. It was found that azamethiphos electrochemical behaviour is irreversible oxidation at the potential of around 1.70 V, in 1 M nitric acid (pH 0). Also, it was found that potential of this oxidation was not pH dependent which can be attributed to the no proton involvement in electrochemical reaction on the electrode surface. The square wave voltammetric method was most appropriate for azamethiphos quantification. Under optimised experimental conditions, linear working range from 2 to 100 µM was estimated with the detection limit of 0.45 µM. Negligible effect of the possible interfering compound was observed. The obtained results show that the developed analytical methodology can be an adequate replacement for the, up to date, used methods for detection of organophosphorous pesticide. © 2018, © 2018 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

AB - A simple and fast method for determination of two phenothiazine drugs, chlorpromazine (CPZ) and thioridazine (TDZ), at the boron-doped diamond electrode (BDDE) was proposed. Oxidation peaks on potentials higher than 1 V were used for quantitation of investigated phenothiazines due to better selectivity over common interfering compounds in urine. Differential pulse voltammetry was applied for trace determination of CPZ and TDZ, in Britton-Robinson buffer solution at optimal pH. Under optimized DPV conditions a linear analytical curve was obtained from 1.0x10(-7) to 4.0x10(-5) M with a detection limit of 0.3x10(-7) M (for CPZ) and in the concentration range of 2x10(-7) M to 4.0x10(-5) M, with a detection limit of 1.2x10(-7)M (for TDZ). The applicability of the method was proved by determination of CPZ and TDZ by proposed procedures in spiked urine samples. The electrochemical behavior of those two important tranquilizers in different solvents was described, exploring the possibility of simultaneous determination.

AB - Novel biobased poly(ester-urethane)s (PUDs) were synthesized by solvent free homogeneous solution polymerization of poly(caprolactone) diol (PCL), castor oil-based polyols (COLs), dimethylolpropionic acid (DMPA), isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) and 1,4-butane diol (BD) as the chain extender. The polyurethane dispersions were prepared by adding required amount of triethylamine (TEA) and water. In this Work, castor oil-based polyols have been synthesized using the depolymerized oligoester obtained from glycolysis of PET waste with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG 400) and castor oil. The effects of the soft segments content on the thermal and coatings properties of resulting polyurethane films have been examined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and measurement of the coatings properties. Phase separation of polyurethane shows a strong correlation with crystallization behaviour of the polyurethane prepared. It is established that all PUD samples containing PCL as a part soft segment with different molar ratio of castor-oil polyol are crystallisable polymers. The results from XRD analysis have showed that highest degree of crystallinity (23 and 22%) is reached in polyurethanes based on the largest content PCL diol (CPU77 and CPU73). The thermal stability of samples based on (COL/PCL molar ratio 0.25:0.75) possesses the best thermal properties but less values hardness coatings which can be ascribed to a decrease of the hard segment i.e. DMPA content in polyurethane dispersions. The long-term stability of polyurethane dispersions has been investigated using UV vis spectroscopy. The physico-mechanical properties such as hardness adhesion test and gloss of the dried films have also been determined considering the effect of soft segment content on coating properties. AB - Elastomers are very often used in severe environments, for instance, in nuclear power plants, where they may be degraded by high-energy radiation and heat. The ageing behaviour of materials used in different equipments is very important. Elastomers based on chlorosulfonated polyethylene (CSM) are used for cable jacketing materials and have excellent radiation resistance needed in nuclear power stations. In the current work, the influence of gamma-irradiation dose (100, 200 and 400 kGy) on the ageing of reinforced blends based on CSM, styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) and natural rubber (NR) has been evaluated. The content of silica in CSM/SBR and CSM/NR rubber blends was varied. The curing behavior of compounds was estimated using the oscillating disk reometer. The irradiation of nano composites has been performed in air in the Co 60 radiation sterilization unit with the dose rate of 10 kGy h(-1). The thermal properties were studied by thermogravimetric test. The mechanical properties (hardness, modulus at 100% elongation, tensile strength and elongation at break) were determined before and after irradiation. A decrease in the elastic modulus and in the strain at break has been observed with increasing irradiation. At higher doses, the network chain scissions become the main degradation process, the cross-linked topology becomes irregular, and material contains more and more weak zones, which deteriorate the ultimate properties.

At higher doses, the network chain scissions become the main degradation process, the cross-linked topology becomes irregular, and material contains more and more weak zones, which deteriorate the ultimate properties.",

AB - The goal of this work was to study thermal aging of sulfur cured ternary blends based on polyisoprene (NR), polybutadiene (BR) and styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) (NR/BR/SBR=(25/25/50) reinforced with different loading carbon black (CB) nanoparticles (0-100 phr). The specimens were subjected to thermooxidative aging at 100 degrees C, for two times: at 72 h and 168 h, respectively, and then mechanically stretched to fracture by tension with a Zwick 1425 universal tensile testing machine. Rheological and mechanical properties were used as characterization of the ternary rubber blends. The reinforcing performance of the filler was investigated using rheometric, mechanical and swelling measurements, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy with Attenuated Total Reflectance (FTIR-ATR). Tensile and swelling properties were determined before and after thermal aging. The rheological properties optimum cure time (t(c90)), scorch time (t(s2)) and the cure rate index (CRI) are decrease in NR/BR/SBR/CB = (25/25/50) ternary rubber blend with 60 phr of filler loading. The movement absorption band from 1451 cm(-1)-1455 cm(-1) the interaction between rubber blend and CB filler is confirmed. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - In this study, the thermal behavior of modified urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin with nanosilica (nano-SiO2), wood flour (WF), and their mixture of SiO2/WF was investigated. Five modified UF hybrid composite materials with 0.8 F/U ratio with different filler were synthesized using the same procedure. The thermal behavior of materials was studied using nonisothermal thermogravimetric analysis, differential thermal gravimetry (DTG), and differential thermal analysis and supported by data from infrared spectroscopy. The shift of DTG peaks to a high temperature indicates the increase in thermal stability of modified UF resin with hybrid SiO2/WF fillers, which is confirmed by the data obtained from the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic study. It was estimated that the UF/WF samples based on nano-SiO2 have better thermal stability.

AB - Chlorosulfonated polyethylene rubber (CSM) was blended with chlorinated natural rubber (CNR) with various formulations and blend ratios (CSM/CNR: 100/0; 75/25; 50/50; 25/75; 0/100) keeping the total waste rubber powder (WRP) content constant at 50 phr (parts per 100 rubber). Rheological, mechanical, dynamic mechanical and thermal aging properties as well as irradiation resistance were used as characterization of the blends. The amount of CNR in blends significantly affected the properties of the blends. The CSM/CNR/WRP rubber blend (50/50/50) possessed higher tensile strength compared with pure CSM and CNR rubber even after irradiation or thermal aging. Modulus, tensile strength and hardness of the blends appeared to increase, but elongation at break decreased progressively with increasing CNR content. These properties decreased in rubber blends after thermal aging. After irradiation, hardness, modulus and tensile strength increased up to 200 kGy and then decreased significantly for the blends with high CNR content, whereas no change in modulus was observed. CNR and CSM showed damping peaks at about 65 and -45 degrees C, respectively, and these values correlate with the glass transition temperatures (T(g)s) of CNR and CSM, respectively. The shift in the T-g values was observed after blending, suggesting an interfacial interaction between the two phases probably caused by the covulcanization in CSM/CNR blends.

AB - This work aimed to study the effects of gamma radiation on the properties of ethylene propylene diene terpolymer/chlorosulfonated polyethylene rubber blend reinforced with 50 phr of carbon black and cross-linked either with sulfur/tetramethylthiuram disulfide or dicumyl peroxide. Irradiation doses were 100, 200, and 400 kGy. It was observed that doses higher than 200 kGy practically destroy the assessed properties of all obtained elastomeric materials, irrespective of used curing system. However, samples cured with sulfur showed a pronounced decrease in mechanical properties.

AB - Glycolysis of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) waste using different molar ratio of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG400), was used to produce saturated hydroxyl-functional polyester polyols with castor oil (CO) by transesterification process. The waterborne polyurethane (WBPU) adhesives were synthesized from these saturated polyester polyols, isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), dimethylolpropionic acid (DMPA), and hexamethoxymethyl melamine (HMMM) as cross-linking agent by a conventional prepolymer process. The glycolyzed polyols and polyester polyos formations were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and the molecular weights were determined using gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The cross-linking reaction between WBPU and HMMM was verified using FfIR and H-1 NMR analysis. Thermal properties were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TG). Thermal stability of cross-linked WBPU significantly increased with decreasing castor oil content in the process of transesterification to obtain polyester polyol as a soft segment. The T-15% and T-50% (the temperature where 15 and 50% weight loss occurred) of WBPU increased with the decreasing of castor oil content in the obtained polyester polyols, caused by the steric hindrance of polyester polyol with higher castor oil content, in the process of cross-linking reactions with HMMM. The physico-mechanical properties of WBPU, such as hardness, adhesion test, and gloss of the dried films were also determined considering the effect of participation of HMMM in cross-linking reactions with polyurethane, on coating properties. AB - The hydrolytic stability and thermal behavior of organic-inorganic composites prepared by two-stage polymerization of urea-formaldehyde resin (UF) with micro-and nano-TiO2 before and after irradiation has been investigated. Composites of urea-formaldehyde and particles of TiO2 of different sizes were synthesized, namely: UF/micro-TiO2 and UF/nano-TiO2. The hydrolytic stability of the modified UF composites was determined by measuring the mass loss and liberated formaldehyde concentration of modified UF composites after acid hydrolysis. The studied modified UF composites have been irradiated (50 kGy) and the effect of gamma-irradiation was evaluated on the basis of the percentage of liberated formaldehyde before and after irradiation. The minimum percentage (0.16%) of liberated formaldehyde was obtained in nano-TiO2 modified UF resin after gamma-irradiation which indicated a significant improvement in the hydrolytic stability compared with micro-TiO2 modified UF resin (0.52%). The effect of gamma-irradiation was evaluated also on the basis of the thermal behavior of the same modified UF composites before and after irradiation. The thermal behavior was studied by non-isothermal thermogravimetric analysis (TG), differential thermo-gravimetry (DTG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) supported by data from attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy. DTG peaks of both composites are shifted to a higher temperature after irradiation, but UF/micro-TiO2 after gamma-irradiation shows less change in the thermal behavior than nano-TiO2. In other words, UF/micro-TiO2 shows better radiation stability. Gamma irradiation causes a minor effect on the ATR-IR spectra, specifically the decrease of the intensities of some bands.

AB - In order to minimize emission of formaldehyde from urea formaldehyde resins (UF) and to improve their thermo-oxidative behavior, the effect of low gamma-irradiation on hydrolytic and thermo-oxidative stability of nano-silica modified UF resin, modified UF resin with wood flour (Pinus silvestris L.) as natural filler and modified UF resin with mixture of SiO2/WF fillers were investigated. The hydrolytic stability of modified UF resins was determined by measuring the mass loss and liberated formaldehyde concentration of modified UF resins after acid hydrolysis. The studied modified UF resins have been irradiated (50 kGy) and effect of gamma-irradiation was evaluated on the basis of percentage of liberated formaldehyde before and after irradiation. The minimum percentage (1.23%) of liberated formaldehyde and mass loss of a 25.35% were obtained in wood flour modified UF resin after 7-irradiation which indicate significant improvement in the hydrolytic stability compared to other modified UF resins. The effect of gamma-irradiation was evaluated also on the basis of thermo-oxidative behavior of the same modified UF resins before and after irradiation. The thermo-oxidative behavior was studied by non-isothermal thermo-gravimetric analysis (TG), differential thermo-gravimetly (DTG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) supported by data from IR spectroscopy. After gamma-irradiation, the shift of DTA peaks a higher temperature indicates that thermo-oxidative stability of modified UF/SiO2/WF is increase. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
