AB - The photoionization of the L shell of lead (Pb, Z = 82) has been treated within the framework of the relativistic random-phase approximation (RRPA) in order to take into account electron correlations and relativistic effects. Calculations are performed in the energy region from 10 to 40 keV, what corresponds to ionization of the L-shell of Pb. We present results of calculations for total and partial cross sections together with photoelectron angular distribution anisotropy parameters of subshells. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. AB - Results of calculations of the near-threshold photoionization of the xenon 3d spin-orbit doublet are reported. Our theoretical analysis is undertaken in order to interpret and enlighten the very detailed measurements of this process [A. Kivimaki , Phys. Rev. A 63, 012716 (2001)], which revealed a previously unobserved interesting feature-an additional broad maximum-in the partial xenon 3d(5/2) cross section. This double maximum was not produced by earlier calculations, except in the recent study by Amusia [Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 093002 (2002)], which, in contrast to the present one, is not ab initio and relativistic in character. The partial photoionization cross sections of 3d(5/2) and 3d(3/2) subshells, photoelectron anisotropy parameters, and spin-polarization parameters that were so far not studied either experimentally or theoretically are calculated. Many-electron correlations, relativistic effects, and relaxation effects of the ionic core in the ionization process are taken into account by using the relativistic random-phase approximation, modified to include the relaxation of the considered subshell.

AB - A special Tesla coil that is fed from the three-phase AC mains power supply is described. Such Tesla coil gives. uniform output voltage in each operating pulse, as it is fed from each phase of the mains with 120 degrees out of phase. There are two versions of such Tesla coil, one with three separate primaries and common secondary, each primary circuit including its primary coil, condenser, and two-electrode spark gaps connected to one phase of the AC mains, and another with only one primary coil, one rotating arm with three two-electrode gaps for each AC mains phase. Both version gives very similar results. The described three-phase Tesla coil is developed as high-frequency, high voltage generator for use in laboratory plasma experiments for research in cleaning of flue gases from SO2 and NOx.

AB - Measurements conducted on cylindrical single-layer coils reveal some of their high-frequency properties. A set of measured resonance and antiresonance frequencies is used to determine a series of partial inductances and partial capacitances of a coil, based on Fosters first form of two-terminal LC networks. Although the procedure departs from most general properties of LC coils, the system of partial capacitances and inductances at low frequencies reduces to coil inductance and self-capacitance. In cases when a coil is operated with one end free, the standard procedure of self-capacitance determination has to be modified accordingly, to take into account the top capacitance of the coil.
