AB - The template method synthesis of both SBA-15 materials with elongated and spherical particles was performed using a surfactant Pluronic P123. The HCl (p.a.) was used to synthesize material with elongated particles connected in chain structures grouped into shapes resembling sheaves of wheat. In the synthesis of spherical SBA-15 with diameters ranging from 0.5 to 2 μm, a spent HCl solution which was obtained after chemical treatment of clay was used where the dominant presence of the spheres was confirmed by the SEM method. In addition to the methods mentioned above, XRD, EDS and FTIR methods characterize SBA-15 materials.

AB - Macroporous silica ceramic was obtained using clay and diatomite. Boric acid as a low-cost additive in the amount of 1 wt% was used. These porous materials were obtained at low forming pressure (40-80 MPa) and lower sintering temperature (850-1300 ºC) for 4h in air. The influence of boric acid, forming pressure, and sintering temperature on the microstructure, porosity parameters, and mechanical properties of obtained porous monoliths were investigated. As-received and the modified samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, FTIR, SEM, and mercury porosimetry measurements. As for modified clay and diatomite, they were pressed at 60 MPa and then sintered at 1150 ºC, obtaining porosities of about 10 % and 60 %, respectively. Both of the analyzed samples had the pore diameter in the range of macroporous materials. The pore diameters of clay samples are ranging from 0.1-10 μm, whereas the pore diameter of diatomite samples was slightly lower with values ranging from 0.05-5 μm. Modified diatomite samples have a lower Young modulus in comparison to modified clay samples.

AB - The mining basin Kolubara lies about 50 km southwest of Belgrade and stretches across the river Kolubara from Lajkovac to its mouth in the Sava River. During coal exploitation a huge amount of clay is deposited as separate layer. Clay as a raw mineral material has a high economic potential due to their low price and high abundance. This material is used for various applications such as filters, heat insulators, absorbents, catalyst supports, building materialn and advanced environmental applications. Clay from Kolubara mining basin is caracterised by inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy (ICP), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Also, activity concentrations of 40K, 226Ra and 232Th in clay from Kolubara mining, were determined by gamma ray spectrometry with HP Ge detector.

AB - Diatomaceous earth is of sedimentary origin consists mainly of accumulated skeletons formed as a protective covering of the diatoms. Usually, high absorption capacity of diatomaceous earth provides its wide use as heat insulation, filter and absorbent material. Starting raw material diatomaceous earth from surface coal mine Kolubara, Serbia, was characterized using, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD). Chemical composition of diatomaceous earth was determined by wet chemical methods. In addition, the absorbed gamma ray dose rates is estimated based on the measured activity concentrations of natural radionuclides in clay were determined by gamma spectrometry. This research shows that this material is environmentally safe for further use.

AB - Investigated the possibility of using methyl methacrylate (MMA) as an acrylic binder in the preparation of ceramic powder of alumina for pressing with the intention of improving machinability of alumina flakes. Compared the properties of the green bodies and the properties of their corresponding sintered samples that are prepared with and without acrylic binder. The achieved higher density of green bodies with MMA (2.35 g/cm3) compared to green bodies without MMA (2.11 g/cm3) were formed under the optimal pressure of 60 MPa, indicating the improved packing of alumina powder with addition of acrylate. In the case of sintered samples, the porosities were increased, and the density and percentage of linear shrinkage were reduced. It has been shown that machining of green bodies, prepared with MMA, can be produced in the form of complex ceramic products of alumina like a screw with a nut and with great possibilities of commercial application.

AB - Mesoporous silica SBA-15 materials of high specific surface area (similar to 700 m(2) g(-1)) were synthesized by using block copolymer Pluronic P123 as template and tetraethoxysilane as silica source. The obtained materials were characterized by XRD, nitrogen adsorption desorption measurements, SEM, EDS and AFM analysis. It was found that small modifications of synthesis conditions influenced the morphological features of the synthesized SBA-15 samples. The SEM analysis had shown that the SBA-15 synthesized at lower temperature and longer time of reaction (80 degrees C, 48 h) provided elongated rod-shaped grains about 1 mu m long. The other sample synthesized at higher temperature and shorter time of reaction (100 degrees C, 24 h) had rounded grains and grains of regular spherical shape with diameters ranging from 0.5 to 2 mu m. The EDS analysis confirmed that the particles of both synthesized samples were of the SiO2 content. In addition, the AFM analysis had shown different surface morphologies of the materials synthesized under various conditions.

AB - Amorphous iron (III) oxide was obtained from clay, using ammonium hydroxide as a precipitating agent. Influence of freeze drying under vacuum, as a drying method, on particle size, chemical composition, and crystallinity of obtained iron (III) oxide powder was investigated. After freeze drying, precipitate was annealed in air at 500 C-o and 900 oC. X-ray diffraction, particle size analysis, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis were used to characterize obtained iron (III) oxide powder. All of three powders obtained by freeze drying and annealing, have low crystallinity and particles with irregular layered shape. Narrow particle size distribution was given by an average diameter value of around 50 mu m for all observed powders. Iron-bearing materials like a-Fe2O3 and gamma-Fe2O3 are obtained. Differential thermal analysis curve of obtained samples showed endothermic reaction at 620 oC which could be ascribed to phase transition from cubic form gamma- - GT alpha- Fe2O3. Thermal transformations of iron (III) oxide, obtained from clay as a natural source, is suitable to explore in the framework of materials chemistry, and opens the possibility to synthesize materials based on Fe2O3 with specific magnetic behavior.

AB - Cost and durability are two major factors that delay large-scale production and commercialization of PEMFC's. One of the technologically ready application of the proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) is in the combined heat and power systems (µCHP), which are used in the individual households or buildings. The performance of the µCHP systems greatly depends on the purity of the hydrogen stream, which is produced via methane reforming process. To overcome low CO tolerance of the commercially used Pt electrocatalyst and to lower the catalyst content we have prepared non-stoichiometric tungsten oxide as a Pt based catalyst support. We have prepared several catalysts designated as 10% Pt/WO3-C, 20% Pt/WO3-C, 40% Pt/WO3-C. The structure and morphology characteristics of the prepared catalysts were investigated using XRD, TEM and SEM/EDX techniques. Investigations concerning electroactivity of these catalysts towards the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) were performed using cyclic voltammetry, linear sweep voltammetry, forming an ultra thin catalyst layer onto RDE. Mechanism and the kinetics of the prepared catalysts towards HOR were evaluated and if was found that increased mass activity of the 10% Pt/WO3-C could be attributed to the interactive naure of the WO3 catalyst support. Obtained results clearly show increased CO tolerance of Pt/WO3-C catalyst compared to commercial Pt/C, which was confirmed by lowering the stripping potential of the CO, adsorbed on the surface of the 10% Pt/WO3-C. catalyst is more facile than that on commercial 40% Pt/C. These catalysts were employed as anode catalyst in the MEA, and the performance of single cell PEMFC were compared to commercial catalyst.

abstract = "Cost and durability are two major factors that delay large-scale production and commercialization of PEMFC's. AB - Catalyst based on cobalt and chrome was investigated as cathode material for hydrogen production process via water electrolysis. Electrocatalytic efficiency of proposed system was studied using quasi-potentiostatic, galvanostatic and impedance spectroscopy techniques of the catalyst obtained by in situ electrodeposition in an alkaline, 6 M KOH, electrolyser. In accordance to our previous studies, synergetic effect of cobalt complex and chrome salt is observed, with its maximum at high temperatures and for high current densities (industrial conditions). The Tafel slopes were found to be around 120 mV and exchange current densities in the range of 10(-3) mA cm(-2) up to 10(-2) mA cm(-2). Results are presented to show the Tafel slopes, the exchange current densities, the apparent energy of activation and the apparent electrochemical surface of in situ formed Co-Cr catalyst. This study shows that catalytic performance of Co-Cr was achieved not only from the increase of the real surface area of electrodes, but also from the true catalytic effect. AB - Hydrogen production via electrolysis of water from alkaline aqueous electrolytes is a well-established conventional technology. However, the cost of hydrogen produced in such a way is high. To improve this process we have investigated in situ activation with Ni-Mo electrocatalytic material for electrodes. This two d-metal combination possesses one of the highest known activities for the HER. Ni-Mo based catalyst was not applied at industrial applications yet, because under industrial conditions (high temperature and concentrated alkaline solution), permanent destruction of the Ni-Mo alloy coating occurs. The most important result of this study is that the Ni-Mo deposit obtained by in situ activation, under industrial conditions, exhibit long term stability and the electrodes retain their high catalytic performance. The process of adding Ni-Mo activating compounds in situ exhibits savings of the energy consumption that can go beyond 20% in some cases. Copyright (C) 2011, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. AB - There are several problems which are holding back the use of fuel cells. The utilization of fuel cells depends on the start-up costs which are very high due to the use of expensive materials for their construction. In that respect, we describe a cost-effective alkaline fuel cell (AFC) that uses solid, polymer based, membrane instead of conventionaly used, highly concentrated, corrosive, liquid alkaline electrolyte. This approach to AFC is potentially the basis of a simple, low-cost system, that can solve one of the problems of the highly-efficient and environment-friendly AFC. The focus of this paper are low cost composite alkaline membranes, based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). The PVA matrix is made by solution cast method and gamma irradiation crosslinking. Three different types of membranes are obtained in this manner plain PVA membrane, PVA membrane cross-linked using gamma irradiation (gamma-PVA) and composite PVA membrane doped with Mo (PVA-Mo). These membranes are immersed in the alkaline solution and investigated as anion exchange membranes. The performance of the solid alkaline fuel cells (SAFCs) containing these PVA membranes has been studied under hydrogen and oxygen gas flow on the Pt/C catalyst. Both, gamma-PVA and PVA-Mo membranes are modified to absorb larger amounts of alkaline solution than the PVA membrane, thus greatly improving the performance of the SAFC, in terms of output power. This is clearly indicated in the polarisation curves. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements during the SAFC operation were also performed to give better insight in the effect observed. Investigation presented in this paper clearly indicates that solid alkaline PVA membranes can be used for the construction of the SAFCs. Copyright (C) 2011, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. AB - We have investigated the possibility of developing high-performance, cost-effective and durable non-noble Co metal electrocatalyst for PEMFC. In this work we applied electrodeposition process for PEMFC electrode preparation that is very efficient and far simpler than any other investigated method. The fuel cell with electrodeposited Co as anode catalyst has shown satisfying performance level. In determining FCs operating conditions, subsequent electrochemical impedance and output power measurements were done, which enable the insight into the Co catalyst based anode behavior. Structure analysis of the electrodeposited anode layer was done by means of SEM and EDS technique. Although the Pt catalyst has higher efficiency, its cost performance ratio is significantly lower than for the Co catalyst, thus this investigation gives interesting possibilities in area of stationary fuel cell application. AB - By applying the well known dualism: mean count rate - mean time between successive pulses - the equivalence between an IIR digital filter and a preset count digital rate meter has been demonstrated. By using a bank of four second order IIR filters and an optimized automated algorithm for filter selection, a practical realization of a preset count rate meter giving good tradeoff between statistical fluctuations and speed of response, particularly at low count rates such as background monitoring, is presented. The presented solution is suitable for designing portable count rate meters. The designed prototype is capable of operating up to 3600 pulses per second with an accuracy of over 4% in steady-state and responce times of 1 second for the rising edge and 2 seconds for the falling edge of the mean count rate step-change.

AB - New algorithm for measurement of mean count rate of pulses from radiation detectors is described. The algorithm is based on the control of a bank of digital IIR filters governed by the state of mean count rate - stationary or transient. The algorithm solves successfully the compromise between the contradictory requirements for low statistical fluctuations in steady state and fast response to sudden changes of mean count rate. The design of the bank of IIR filters is carried out by using the Chebyshev approximation of the second kind in order to achieve the high selectivity and high stop-band attenuation applying as low as possible order of the constituent filters. All designed filters are of the second order.
The static and dynamic characteristics of the new algorithm and the corresponding computational efficiency are tested and compared with those of the traditional rate-meter algorithms. The responses of the algorithm to linearly growing mean count rate and its sensitivity to variations of mean count rate have also been examined. The state of mean count rate, stationary or transient, is determined by a circuit for estimation of the gradient of mean count rate.
The numbers of threshold levels within the adaptation logic circuit and their mutual positions have been optimized to achieve the best compromise.
Stability of the algorithm is tested numerically by computer simulations and verified experimentally.
A mean count rate meter based on the described algorithm has been designed and successfully realized.

AB - Hydrogen is one of the most widely produced commodities in the world economy. The basic technologies for producing hydrogen via the electrolysis of water have long been known. However, there are disadvantages when using this process. Two-thirds of the operation costs of the electrolyzers are electricity costs. The challenge, addressed.by numerous companies and researchers in the last few years, is the cost cutting by increasing efficiency of the process. The aim of this work was the attempt to optimize the electrolytic hydrogen production from alkaline solution, through the variation of cathode materials and use of ionic activators. The part of our results shows the better electrocatalytic activity of intermetallic phases and the energy consumption is decreased when compared with the industrial data (4.5-5 kWh m(-3) H-2). The role of ionic activator used is also very significant. These results give the opportunity for further research of cumulative effect of the intermetallic electrodes and ionic activators on industrial level. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
