AB - Magnesium ferrite (MgFe2O4) particles were synthetized by sol-gel method and used in the decolorization of the Acid Violet 109 (anthraquinone dye, AV109) water solutions' by combination of adsorption and heterogeneous Fenton process. The material's morphology and elemental analysis of the surface were revealed by Scanning electron microscopy and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM/EDS). The X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) technique was used to analyze the crystallographic phase. In the first part of the decolorization experiment, the adsorption ability of the synthesized particles was investigated. During the adsorption study influence of pH was investigated. In the second part of the decolorization experiment, the effects of the various parameters on the Fenton process were studied such as the initial concentrations of hydrogen peroxide, dye, and magnesium ferrite particles. Influence of magnesium ferrite particles structure, pH value and reaction temperature were also investigated. The decolorization reaction was followed by UV-Visible (UV-Vis) spectrophotometry. At optimal conditions, the dye decolorization was 99.1% (55.4% by adsorption and 43.7% by the Fenton process). Both the adsorption and the Fenton process obey second-order kinetics.

AB - Natural radionuclides are omnipresent in the environment. However, our environment is also contaminated with anthropogenic radionuclides that appear as a consequence of human activities. One of the main sources of increased radioactive contamination in environment was nuclear accident in Chernobyl in 1986. Medicinal herbs have long history of worldwide consumption in traditional medicine. Therefore, it is necessary to control the usage of medicinal herbs and their products, from radiological point of view, as well. In that way, unwanted radiological effects on human health can be avoided. The paper deals with radiological analysis of 7 selected medicinal herbs: (Thymus serpyllum L., Breckland thyme; Hypericum perforatum L., St. John's wort; Rosa canina L., Dog-rose; Mentha sp., mint; Melissa officinalis L., Lemon balm; Tilia tomentosa L., Silver Linden; Achillea millefolium, Yarrow) from the region of Fruška Gora, Republic of Serbia. Specific activities of 137Cs, 40K and 210Pb in medicinal herbs samples are determined by using HPGe gamma-ray spectrometer system. From obtained specific activities individual annual effective doses due to daily ingestion of 200 ml infusion of medicinal herbs were deduced. Obtained specific activities are in intervals: <1.4 Bq/kg, (303 – 1073) Bq/kg and (3.58 – 35.6) Bq/kg, for137Cs, 40K and 210Pb, respectively. Deduced individual annual effective doses due to ingestion are similar to the literature data and are smaller than the recommended limit of 100 μSv, defined in Article 8 of the Regulation on limits of radionuclide content in drinking water, foodstuffs, feeding stuffs, drugs, items of general use, building materials and other goods to be placed on the market (Official Gazette of the Republic of Serbia, 2018). Therefore, a daily use of 200 mL of herbal infusion during a year made from the investigated medicinal herbs does not pose a significant radiological health risk for consumers.

The problems associated with the production of energy from coal is the so-called “energy waste”, such as ash and slag, which are incombustible and unburnt residue from combustion of coal. If ash and slag are released into the environment an increase and/or redistribution of natural radio-nuclide content can occur. To determine the potential impact of “energy waste” on the environment, samples of coal, ash, and slag from thermal power plant "Nikola Tesla" and "Kolubara" were meas-ured with a semiconductor HPGe spectrometer. Results of activity concentration of natural radionu-clides and artificial 137Cs in coal, slag and ash are presented in few previously published papers and obtained values are in accordance with similar worldwide investigations. o ensure the accuracy and precision (reliability) ofthe obtained measurement results, quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) program were established. Internal control includes check-ing of the characteristics of HPGe spectrometer used for measurement of all analysed samples. Point sources of 60Co and 137Cs are used as control sources for checking following characteristics: peak positions, net peak area, FWHMs (Full Width at Half Maximum), FWTMs (Full Width at Tenth Max-imum) and FWHM/FWTM ratios. In addition to the mentioned characteristics, the counting of back-ground is also regularly controlled. Each of the mentioned characteristics may indicate some irreg-ularity in the operation of the detector system and thus could influence reliability of performed activ-ity concentration measurements. The paper presents the control charts of the examined characteristics of the HPGe spectrometer used for measurements of coal, ash and slag samples. The obtained control charts indicate the long-term stability of the spectrometer and hence confirm accuracy and precision of measurement results.

Specific activities of radionuclides 210Pb, 137Cs, and 40K were measured using a semiconductor HPGe spectrometer system in these wild mushroom samples. The activity concentrations of all measured dried wild mushrooms are for 210Pb: between 2.05 Bq/kg and 9.74 Bq/kg; for 137Cs: between < 0.2 Bq/kg and 19.3 Bq/kg; for 40K between 704 Bq/kg and 2530 Bq/kg. The total individual annual effective doses due to ingestion of 210Pb, 137Cs, and 40K radionuclides within a 0.5 kg dry mass of the wild mushrooms is between 3.99 µSv and 10.81 µSv, and are much lower than the recommended level for the public (1 mSv/y).

Natural radionuclides (radionuclides of the uranium and thorium series as well as K-40) are an integral part of our environment, and as a consequence of nuclear accidents we also have the presence of anthropogenic radionuclides, primarily Cs-137. The significant use of medicinal plants represent a radiological burden for the general population, so the regular monitoring is needed. In this work, 9 types of medicinal plants from the area of Gučevo (Western Serbia) were analysed. The specific activities of natural radionuclides 210-Pb i 40-K as well as Cs-137 were determined using a semiconductor HPGe spectrometer. Annual effective dose due to ingestion were calculated for each measured radionuclide, and for two age categories (one year old and adult). All calculations are based on the assumption daily consumption of 200 ml of herbal tea. The obtained values for the annual effective dose due to ingestion point to the conclusion that the daily use of medicinal plant teas from the analyzed area does not represent a significant radiological risk for the health of adults, but caution and prudence are necessary when it is about children.

AB - Kontrola kvaliteta laboratorijskog procesa zauzima značajno mesto u svakodnevnom laboratorijskom radu.
AB - Quality control of the laboratory process plays an important role in daily laboratory work. Due to its importance, international standards have issued the ways and requirements for performing such a task. One of the requirements of the ISO 17025 standard is to ensure confidence in the measurement results, which, among other things, can be done by continuously monitoring the parameters characteristic of the laboratory method of interest through the construction of the so-called control charts. The paper presents the results of a three-and-a-half-year analysis of the gamma spectrometric system measurements in the Laboratory for Nuclear and Plasma Physics of the INN "Vinča". Measurements were made once a week and point sources Co-60 and Cs-137 were used as control sources. In addition to monitoring the count below the peak, the position of the peak, the full width at half maximum (FWHM), the full width at tenth maximum (FWTM), as well as their mutual ratio (FWTM/FWHM), the count in the background was also monitored. The results show that the gamma spectrometric system has satisfactory stability over a long period of time.

AB - The study's primary goal is to determine carbamate pesticide methomyl's kinetic parameters and degradation efficiency from water solution by direct electrochemical oxidation using IrOX anode. Also, define the dependence of the efficiency of methomyl decomposition by direct electrochemical oxidation on the initial concentration of pesticide and electrolyte, applied current, and pH value. The results of methomyl degradation by direct electrochemical oxidation obey the pseudo-first kinetic order. Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy followed the methomyl concentration during the study. The degradation products were studied using the Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Also, this study determines the energy consumption and optimal initial conditions. The phytotoxicity of pesticide and degradation products was studied using mung beans.

AB - This paper presents the results of research on the application of nanomaterials on knitwear intended for camouflage protection. Polyester fibers that had already been dyed in camouflage shades (light green, beige green and dark green) were additionally treated with poly(vinyl butyral) (PVB) with or without incorporated nanoparticles of tungsten disulfide (WS2). This impregnation has proven to be successful in improving the camouflage characteristics of some other materials, like glass or cotton. For the prepared samples, the diffuse reflection, specular gloss and color coordinates of both treated samples and untreated samples were determined. Also, the samples wеre observed in the medium and long wavelength infrared spectrum using IR thermography. The obtained results indicated that there is a possibility of using this new impregnated knitwear in the wider area of the EMS.

AB - This paper aims to estimate a potential radiological risk from different kinds of coals used for domestic heating in Serbia, by measuring the activity concentration of radionuclides and radon exhalation rate. The obtained radon mass exhalation rate ranges from (5.3 ± 3.1) mBqkg–1s–1 to (70.3 ± 9.4) mBqkg –1s–1 and was highest for lignite type of coal. It is estimated that coal stored in the basement could contribute up to 50 Bqm–3 of indoor radon concentration at the ground level. Activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, 40K, 238U, 235U, and 210Pb in analysed coal samples agree with previously reported concentrations of coal used in Serbia. The values of radium equivalent concentration and external hazard index indicate that the used coal does not represent a significant radiation hazard.

AB - This research considers a possibility to enhance the mechanical and spectrophotometric properties of a military camouflage cotton textile by applying a nano silver/poly(vinyl butyral), PVB, impregnation. Silver is known for its unique optical, electrical, thermal properties and antimicrobial activity[1]. PVB is chosen as a good impregnating matrix, being a thermoplastic elastomer with good adhesion behavior, resistant to wetting [2]. Impregnated fabric samples were examined regarding spectrophotometric properties and mechanical abrasion resistance. To achieve low visibility, besides being painted to match the colors of the environment, a surface must scatter light, so it should have a matte, low gloss coating [3, 4]. Diffuse reflectance and gloss are related, and from a spectral point of view, scattering properties are relevant for surface appearance [5]. Certain nanostructures may alter this feature.

AB - Different types of textile materials are being used for military purposes. Cotton fabrics are the most commonly used for army personnel protection. Therefore lots of different approaches have been developed for camouflage prints. On the other hand, different polymers are used as impregnation of fabrics for this reason, and nowadays, nanotechnologies play important role in enhancing the textile materials. In our previous study the possibility of camouflage textile impregnation has been examined, with a polymer and nanostructures that was earlier proven to be beneficial in aspects of decreasing friction and wear, increasing mechanical resistance and enhancing camouflage properties [1-3, 4, 5]. Polyvinyl butyral, PVB was chosen as impregnating polymer which does not dissolve in water, i.e. resistant to wetting. Fullerenelike nanoparticles of tungsten disulfide, IF-WS2, were used as a nanoreinforcement due to their mechanical resistance and solid lubricating behavior [3, 4].Also, in our earlier research, a positive effect on spectrophotometric characteristics of military camouflage paints was shown [5, 6]. As a base material, in this research polyester knitwear was used, intended for protective clothing and other items that need to be camouflaged.

AB - In order to examine the possibility to improve its camouflage properties standard cotton fabric with camouflage print was impregnated with poly(vinyl butyral), PVB and fullerene-like nanoparticles of tungsten disulfide, PVB/IF-WS2. FTIR analysis excluded any possible chemical interaction of IF-WS2 with PVB and the fabric. The camouflage behavior of the impregnated fabric has been examined firstly in the VIS part of the spectrum. Diffuse reflection, specular gloss and color coordinates were measured for three different shades (black, brown and dark green). Thermal imaging was applied to examine the camouflage abilities of this impregnation in IR part of the spectrum. The obtained results show that PVB/IF-WS2 impregnation system induced enhacement of the materials camouflage properties, i.e. that IF-WS2 have a positive effect on spectrophotometric characteristics of the fabric. AB - Radar-absorbent materials, used in stealth technology for defense aircrafts, vehicles, satellites, etc. from radar detection, are commonly based on graphite or semiconductive particles embedded in a polymer matrix. In this study, we employed Co2+ ion-substitution to improve Vis-NIR reflectivity of hydroxyapatite (Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2, HAP) powder. HAP:Co with nominally 5 at.% of Co was prepared with hydrothermal processing of a precipitate. Synthesized powder was characterized by XRD, Raman and ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, FE-SEM and TEM. Thermal stability of HAP:Co powder was examined by simultaneous TG-DTA analyzer. To modify its optical properties and obtain powders with a varietty of color tone, the HAP:Co powder was calcined at 800, 1000, and 1100 °C, in an air atmosphere, for 1 hour. Afterward, the calcined particles were used to prepare composites with poly(vinyl butyral), (PVB); the concentration range was 1 wt.% of the HAP:Co in PVB. The composite coatings, in the form of thin films on glass, were prepared by the solvent-casting technique, using ethanol as a fast evaporating solvent. Firstly, the HAP:Co particles were dispersed in ethanol, then PVB was added (Mowital B30H) and dissolved. To evaporate the solvent before spectrophotometric measurements, the coatings on glass were dried at room temperature for 72 hours. To comprehend optical properties of the coatings, diffuse reflection, transmission, and color coordinates were determined. We found that calcined HAP:Co particles have potential to be used in the formulation of coatings for camouflage protection.

AB - Nowadays, application of nanotechnologies is an emerging trend in defense technologies, as well as in all other fields. In previous years there has been an extensive research ongoing on the possibilities of application of nanotechnologies in order to enhance the armaments and military equipment. Among the application of nanofuels and nanomodifiers in energetic materials, active nanocatalysts of self-decontamination in CBRN protection, nanoreinforcements of composites and coatings, one group of nanomaterials stood out for its possible multidisciplinary applications and efficiency. Tungsten disulfide in the form of inorganic fullerene-like nanoparticles and inorganic nanotubes (IF-WS2 and INT-WS2), was previously known as a solid lubricant, extensively used by NASA, military, aerospace and automotive industry. WS2 comes in different shapes and forms and all of them are known for their good mechanical properties, but in these two nano-forms it has extraordinary impact, pressure and heat resistance, dry lubrication performance, and special conductive properties. In this paper a survey is presented of recent research of tungsten disulfide nanostructures potential use as in defense technologies, from dry lubrication, over reinforcement of polymers for binding systems, of composites for ballistic protection and aircraft construction, to camouflage protection coatings.

AB - Diffuse reflection as a feature of dyed coatings is important characteristic regarding camouflage protection analysis. In our laboratory practice, the need for diffuse reflection analysis of textile materials has appeared, recently. Therefore, astm e903-12 [1] method has been modified in order to be applicable for this type of materials. The measurements of diffuse reflection were conducted, in the military technical institute laboratory for textile, leather and shoes examination in belgrade, serbia, using the uv/vis/nir spectrophotometer uv 3600 from a japanese manufacturer shimadzu with an integrating sphere within wavelength area from 650 nm to 1000 nm. For the purpose of results analyses, uv probe programme package [2] was used. 10 measurements of spectralon (manufactured by labsphere®), which is used as a certified reflectance standard, were performed and obtained standard deviation was 0.07 %. Then control sample, a piece of a standard military cloth of serbian army, which has five color shades (light green, beige green, dark green, brown and black) was tested. Standard deviations were in range from 0.09% for black tone on 650 nm wavelength to 2.0% for light green tone on 1000 nm. The combine uncertainty for the method was ±2.0 %, which coincides with the above mentioned astm standard. In the end, comparative measurements of the same control sample for all five shades were performed in the “vinca” institute for nuclear sciences, department for physical chemistry, university of belgrade on lambda 35 perkin-elmer uv/vis/nir spectrophotometer. Moreover, the z score was calculated as well, and its values ranged from -0.71 to +0.71, which was satisfying regarding interlaboratory measurements rules. Overall results showed that this method is applicable for diffuse reflection measurements of textile materials.

AB - There are two important features that have a significance when the camouflage protection abilities are in question. First, dyeing of the material and everything related to process of dying and the influence of the material impregnation which is most commonly used to improve physical and mechanical properties of textile. In our initial research, we examined influence of textile impregnation on the value of diffuse reflection within visible and near-infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Some questions arose and we continued that initial research. The aim of this paper is to try to give answers on those questions. In the experiment polyamide cloth samples dyed with specific camouflage dyes and impregnated with polyurethane (pu) and chlorosulfonated polyethylene (csm) were used. Spectral reflection measurements in the wavelength area from 400 nm to 1000 nm were performed for the light green, beige green, dark green, brown and black tone for impregnated as well as for non-impregnated samples. The measurements were conducted using the uv/vis/nir spectrophotometer uv 3600 from a japanese manufacturer shimadzu with an integrating sphere. The measurement uncertainty was 2% and the uv probe programme package was used. This first experiment showed that impregnation affects the value of diffuse reflection, therefore further tests have been conducted. Here, we present results of the scanning electron microscope (sem) analysis. Samples were analyzed using jeol jsm-6610 in lv (low vacuum) mode and a voltage of 15 kv was applied, for same types of samples and same shades. The results did not show great difference between samples. Regarding the values of diffuse reflection, however, we still need to find a way to explain obtained differences so further tests will be performed such as ftir or eds.

AB - PVB is a flexible but tough polymer of excellent optical clarity and transparence, and due to that it has a wide application in different coatings and in laminated glass industry. Epoxy resin has good mechanical resistance and it is also applied in coatings, but also as a binder in composites. In this research a possibility was examined to improve thermal resistance and spectrophotometric properties of thin film coatings of PVB and epoxy modified with addition of 10 wt.% of PVB, by addition of small concentrations of tungsten disulfide nanotubes and nanoparticles. Coatings were applied on glass plates by solvent-casting technique: PVB and epoxy/PVB were dissolved in ethanol in which previously nanostructures were deagglomerated and dispersed using ultrasonic probe. Inorganic fullerene-like nanoparticles of tungsten disulphide (IF-WS2) were added in concentration 1 wt.% and nanotubes (INT-WS2) in concentration 0.3 wt.%. Dispersion of tungsten disulfide nanostructures was observed using scanning electron microscope. Thermal resistance was examined by differential scanning calorimetry. The following spectrophotometric properties were examined: diffuse reflection and transmition, using spectrophotometer Shimadzu UV 3600 with an integrating sphere and UV Probe programme package, and specular gloss, using glossmeter Elcometer 480, under angles 20°, 60° and 85°. Observed results have indicated that new composite coatings with nanostructures have enhanced thermal resistance and camouflage properties for potential military applications.

AB - The reinforcing effect of tungsten disulfide nanostructures in different polymer composites has already been proven, and poly(vinyl butyral), PVB, is among these polymers. In this research spectrophotometric properties, transmittance and diffuse reflection, were observed for thin film coatings of PVB on glass plates, made by solvent-casting technique, containing different concentrations of fullerene-like nanoparticles and multiwall nanotubes of WS2. The results obtained for thin film coatings on glass plates were measured within 380-1600 nm wavelength area. Both, diffuse reflection and transmittance were measured with UV/VIS/NIR spectrophotometer with an integrated sphere. The results showed that there is a possibility for application of these materials in the defense industry.

AB - The possibility of improving the properties of the standard polymeric and a water-based coating for military camouflage protection by adding nanoparticles of inorganic fulerene-like tungsten disulphide (IF-WS2). Nanoparticles were added and dispersed in paint by ultrasonic irradiation. The paints were applied to standard steel plates, and dried, for examinations of chemical resistance to aggressive media and of the following physical-mechanical properties: hardness, flexibility, elasticity, abrasion resistance, resistance to steel balls impact and adherence. These properties were compared for paint without and with IF-WS2 nanoparticles. The effect of adding IF-WS2 on rheological properties of the paints has been examined using Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA), observing viscosity as a function of the shear rate. Camouflage properties were also examined - IR reflection and colorimetry. Significant improvements of mechanical resistance to abrasion and steel balls impact, as well as hardness, have been achieved.

AB - Camouflage characteristics of textile materials are of extreme importance especially when production of personal equipment is in question. This paper presents results of spectral reflection measurements in the wavelength area from 400 nm to 1000 nm, of dyed polyamide cloth samples dyed with specific camouflage dyes and impregnated with polyurethane and chlorosulfonated polyethylene. The comparative results were given for the light green, beige green, dark green, brown and black tone. Apart from this, spectral reflection of non-impregnated polyamide cloth samples was measured as well. The results show that the best camouflage characteristics are those of polyurethane impregnated cloth samples.

AB - In this paper a possibility of improving properties of protective coatings by adding nanoparticles of IF-WS2 is
examined. Nanoparticles were added to a standard polyurethane paint for military camouflage protection, in a
concentration of 1 wt.%, and dispersed in paint by ultrasonic irradiation. After the homogenization on the magnetic stirrer
the paints were applied to standard steel plates, and dried, for examinations of physical-mechanical properties and on
chemical resistance. The following physical-mechanical properties were compared for paint without and with IF-WS2
nanoparticles: hardness, flexibility, elasticity, abrasion resistance and stickness. Camouflage properties were also examined
- IR reflection and colorimetry. Also, resistances to salt water and agressive media were observed. The effect of adding IFWS2 on rheological properties of the two examined paints has been examined using Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA),
observing viscosity as the function of the shear rate.
