AB - Fluorapatite nanopowders with different amounts of fluoride ions were prepared using the surfactant-assisted microwave method under isothermal conditions. Microwave irradiation was applied for the rapid formation of crystals. A micellar solution of polyoxyethylene (23) lauryl ether was used as a regulator of nucleation and crystal growth. Characterization studies from X-ray diffraction, field-emission scaning electron microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectra showed that crystals have an apatite structure and particles of all samples are nano size, with an average length of 50 nm and about 15-25 nm in diameter. Antimicrobial studies have demonstrated that synthesized fluorapatite nanopowders exhibit activity against tested pathogens: Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. Activity increased with the amount of fluoride ions. The synthesized fluorapatite nanomaterials are promising as materials in environmental protection and medicine for orthopedics and dental restorations. © 2018, Vinca Inst Nuclear Sci. AB - The non-isothermal kinetics of nicotine desorption from precipitated silicon dioxide was investigated. The non-isothermal thermogravimetric curves of nicotine desorption at different heating rates (beta = 5, 10 and 20 K/min) were recorded. The kinetics model of non-isothermal kinetics of nicotine desorption was determined by using the model-fitting and master-plot methods. It was found that non-isothermal nicotine desorption can mathematically describe by the theoretical kinetics model of phase - boundary controlled reaction (contracting volume, i.e., three dimensional shape) - R3. By applying the method of Kissinger and method of invariant kinetic parameters the values of kinetic parameters were determined. It was established that both applied method give almost identical kinetic parameters regardless their theoretical limitations. The dependence of activation energy on the degree of nicotine desorption was determined using the KAS method. It was found that the value of activation energy is independent on the degree of nicotine desorption. The effect of heating mode on the kinetic of nicotine desorption was analyzed. It was established that the type of heating mode (isothermal and non-isothermal) does not influence the mechanism of the formation of the activation complex nor the kinetics model of desorption. The increase in the values of kinetic parameters obtained for non-isothermal heating in comparison to the isothermal ones are explained with the Larsons model of selective transfer of energy. AB - The poly(acrylic acid) hydrogel (PAA) has been suggested as adsorbent
material to treat cobalt-60 in radioactive liquid waste. The kinetics of
isothermal adsorption of cobalt ions from an aqueous solution onto PAA
hydrogel was investigated in the temperature range from 298K to 315 K.
The kinetic model of Co2+ adsorption [1-(1-α)1/3]2=kt, was established by
using the model-fitting method. The kinetic parameters of Co2+ adsorption
(Ea = 41 kJ mol-1, ln [A/min-1]=12) were determined. It was found that
cobalt adsorption was kinetically controlled process which is determined by
the rate of three-dimensional diffusion Co2+ ions (D3).

AB - The effect of ultraviolet (UV) ozone treatment on the surface properties of gold implanted high density polyethylene (HDPE) was investigated at a nanoscale using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). HDPE samples were modified by the implantation of gold ions at a dose of 5 x 10(15) ions/cm(2), using energies of 50, 100, 150, and 200 keV, and subsequently treated with UV/ozone. AFM surface topography images revealed that after UV/ozone treatment, the surface roughness of all Au/HDPE samples increased, while Power Spectral Density function increased only for samples implanted using higher energies, with a maximum for 150 keV. The chemical surface composition was homogenous in all cases, which was evidenced by appearance of single peaks in the histograms obtained from the phase AFM images. For UV/ozone treated samples, the shift of the peaks positions in the histograms to the higher values of the phase lag with respect to untreated ones indicated the decrease of surface hardness. Besides, a significant change of fractal dimension of surface grains is observed after UV/ozone treatment. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - In this work, we present the results of a Raman spectroscopy study of single-wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) thin films treated with microwave irradiation. SWCNT thin films were deposited by the vacuum filtration method and transferred onto alumina substrate. These thin films were exposed to microwave irradiation of 25 and 250 W at 2.45 GHz. All samples were characterized by Raman spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy. Raman spectroscopy analysis showed that there was neither selective destruction of metallic nor semiconducting nanotubes. It was noticed that samples were heated only during microwave irradiation at 250 W. The major effect of microwave irradiation on SWCNTs was their debundling.

AB - The kinetic of non-isothermal dehydration of equilibrium swollen poly(acrylic acid-co-methacrylic acid) hydrogel (PAM) has been investigated. Thermogravimetric and conversion dehydration curves were recorded at various heating rates 5-30 K min(-1). The conversion dehydration curves at all investigated temperatures can be mathematically described using the logistic regression function in entire. It was found that activation energy complexly changes with the increasing dehydration degree. Physical meaning of the parameters of logistic function (band w) is given. It was established that, during the dehydration, changes in the fluctuating hydrogel structure occur, and that limiting step on the kinetics of hydrogel dehydration have rate of structural rearrangement of hydrogel (actual relaxation mechanism). A procedure for determining the dependence of effective activation energy on temperature and dehydration degree, based on logistic function, is exposed. Possible explanation for the existence of negative values of activation energy in the certain range of temperature, is given. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - The isothermal kinetic of the release of nicotine from a poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) hydrogel was investigated at temperature range from 26 degrees C to 45 degrees C. Specific shape parameters of the kinetic curves, the period of linearity and saturation time were determined. The change in the specific shape parameters of the kinetic curves with temperature and the kinetic parameters of release of nicotine E(a) and ln A were determined. By applying the model fitting method it was established that the kinetic model of release of nicotine from the PAA hydrogel was [1 - (1 - alpha)(1/3)] = k(M)t. The limiting stage of the kinetics release of nicotine was found to be the contracting volume of the interaction interface. The distribution function of the activation energy was determined and the most probable values of activation energies of 25.5 kJ mol(-1) and 35 kJ mol(-1) were obtained. Energetically heterogeneity of the interaction interface was explained by the existence of the two different modes of bonding the nicotine molecules onto the hydrogel network by hydrogen bond and electrostatic forces. abstract = "The isothermal kinetic of the release of nicotine from a poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) hydrogel was investigated at temperature range from 26 degrees C to 45 degrees C. AB - The isothermal adsorption of nicotine from an aqueous solution onto zeolite type USY was investigated. The adsorption isotherms of nicotine onto the zeolite at different temperatures ranging from 298 to 322K were determined. It was found that the adsorption isotherms can be described by the model of Freundlich adsorption isotherm. Based on the adsorption isotherms the changes of adsorption heat, free energy and entropy with adsorption degree were determined. The determined decrease of adsorption heat with adsorption degree can be explained by the presence of the adsorption centers of different energy and concentration on interface of zeolite-nicotine solution. It was found that the probability function of density distribution of the heat of adsorption (DDF) has exponential form. It was concluded that the possibility of fitting the adsorption isotherms of nicotine onto the zeolite by Freundlich adsorption isotherm was a direct consequence of that. The determined increase in entropy with the increase in adsorption degree can be explained with the change of phase state of adsorbed nicotine. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - The isothermal kinetics of nicotine desorption from silicon dioxide (SiO(2)) was investigated. The isothermal thermogravimetric curves of nicotine at temperatures of 115 degrees C, 130 degrees C and 152 degrees C were recorded. The kinetic parameters (E(a), lnA) of desorption of nicotine were calculated using various methods (stationary point, model constants and differential isoconversion method). By applying the model-fitting method, it was found that the kinetic model of nicotine desorption from silicon dioxide was a phase boundary controlled reaction (contracting volume). The values of the kinetic parameters, E(a,alpha) and lnA(alpha), complexly change with changing degree of desorption and a compensation effect exists. A new mechanism of activation for the desorption of the absorbed molecules of nicotine was suggested in agreement with model of selective energy transfer. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - The possibility of applying the Weibull mixture model for the fitting of the non-isothermal conversion data for the combustion process of animal bone samples has been investigated. It has been found that the conversion data at the different heating rates for the investigated samples, can be successfully described by the linear combination of few Weibull distribution functions. An optimal fitting of the conversion data has been obtained by a mixture of three Weibull distribution functions. It was established that the conversion curves calculated by the proposed model, are in good agreement with the raw conversion data of the investigated bone samples. The alterations of distribution parameters in the Weibull mixture model, indicate a probably change of the kinetic nature of the particular reaction stage. A model with a continuous distribution of the apparent activation energies (E-a) can adequately represents the individually stages of the complex combustion process. The characterization of the estimated distribution curves, enable us to receive the additional informations about the kinetic behaviour of individual reaction stages, which does not attainable from the results of conventional kinetic analysis. AB - The adsorption kinetics of pyrazol- (PACA) and imidazol-azo-chromo-tropic acid (IACA) onto Dowex 1-X8 resin, as a function of the dye concentration and temperature were investigated at pH 4.5. The pseudo-first- and second-order kinetic models and intraparticle diffusion model were used to describe the obtained kinetic data. The adsorption rate constants were found to be in the order of magnitude 10(-2) min(-1) for all of the used kinetics models. The adsorption capacity increases with increasing initial dye concentration. The study of adsorption kinetics at different temperatures (in the range from 5 to 25 degrees C) reveals an increase in the rate of adsorption and adsorption capacity with increasing temperature. The activation energy (in the case of PACA 16.6 kJ/mol, and for IACA 11.3 kJ/mol) was determined using the Arrhenius dependence. Electrostatic interactions between the dye and resin beads were shown to be the adsorption mechanism.

AB - Thin films were deposited by d.c. sputtering onto a Silicon Substrate. The influence of the W-Ti thin film thickness to its structural and morphological characteristics of a nano-scale were studied. The phase composition and grain size were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), while the surface morphology and surface roughness were determined by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The analysis of the phase composition show that the thin films had a polycrystalline structure they were composed of a b.c.c. W phase with the presence of a h.c.p. Ti phase. The XRD peak in the scattering angle interval of 38 degrees-43 degrees was interpreted as an overlap of peaks corresponding to the W(110) and Ti(101) planes. The grain size and the mean surface roughness both increase with the thikness of the thin film. The chemical composition of the thin film surface was also analysed by low energy ions scattering (LEIS). The results show the surface segregation of titanium, as well as a substantial presence of oxygen an the surface.

AB - Injectable and gas-permeable composite cements, polydimethylsiloxane/hydroxyapatite (PDMS/HAp), were synthesized using bi-component polysiloxane precursors (RTV-A and RTV-B), which react by hydrosilylation, and different mass fractions of hydroxyapatite (HAp) having particle size of about 100 nm. The effect of HAp mass fraction (0-60%) on the thermodynamic and kinetic parameters of polysiloxanes cross-linking, i.e., PDMS/HAp composite preparation, was investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It was determined that small mass fractions of HAp (up to about 10%) cause a decrease in temperature (T-max), and activation energy (E-a) of the investigated cross-linking process, while the total heat of the process (H-tot) increases. For the HAp mass fraction greater than 20%, an opposite effect was observed. The temperature and the time interval of cross-linking increase rapidly for smaller, but slowly, almost insignificantly, for larger HAp mass fractions. The determined order (n) of the reaction shows a trend similar to H-tot, but due to small variations found, this does not merit discussion.
