AB - TiO2 nanopowders were produced by sol-gel technique using TiCl4 as a starting material. For the preparation of crystalline anatase with developed surface area, this aqueous solution has been mixed with 0.05 M or 0.07 M (NH4)(2)SO4 solution in a temperature-controlled bath. The pH values of the suspension were 7, 8 or 9. According to the x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis the anatase crystallite sizes were about 12 nm, which coincided with the average particle size revealed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The Raman scattering measurements have shown the presence of a small amount of highly disordered brookite phase in addition to dominant anatase phase with similar nanostructure in all synthesized powders. BET measurements revealed that all synthesized catalysts were fully mesoporous, except the sample synthesized with 0.07 M (NH4)(2)SO4 at pH=9, which had small amount of micropores. The photocatalytic degradation of herbicide Clomazone was carried out for both the pure active substance and as the commercial product (GAMIT 4-EC) under UV irradiation. The best photocatalytic efficiency was obtained for the catalyst with the largest specific surface area, confirming this parameter as crucial for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of the pure active substance and commercial product of herbicide Clomazone.

AB - The present study estimated the cracking phenomenon in as-plasma-sprayed hydroxylapatite coatings (HACs) after they were being subjected to the severe cutting conditions in the direction perpendicular to the coating/substrate interface. In order to evaluate the effects of substrate preheating on the occurrence of micro-cracks, the HACs were deposited at different initial substrate temperatures (T-S = 20, 100 and 200 degrees C). The changes in phase composition and HA splat morphology with T-S were observed and were correlated with the cracking occurrence. The results showed that severe cutting conditions introduced a localized cracking in the regions of HACs dominantly attributed to the brittle hydroxyl- deficient amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) phase. This effect was particularly observable in the HACs deposited without preheating of substrate. On the other hand, the preheating of substrate reduced the presence of micro-cracks and caused insignificant changes in the average local phase composition. In HACs deposited with preheating of substrate, the HA splats (of which HACs are composed) were thinner and recrystallized HA regions seemed smaller in size and more evenly distributed. These results implied potentially important roles of the HA splat formation mechanism on the distribution of ACP and recrystallized HA regions in the as-plasma-sprayed HACs and the cracking resistance of HACs.

AB - In this work, Zn(CH3 COO)(2) 2 H-2 O with AgNO3 content from 0 to 6 mol% was solvothermally treated at 120 C for 18 h in the presence of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone), ethylene glycol and sodium hydroxide. The structural , microstructural and photocatalytic properties of the unmodified and Ag modified ZnO powders have been investigated by the XRPD, FESEM, TEM, UV-vis, Raman and BET techniques. The Ag modified samples consist of ZnO nanocrystals and metallic Ag on the surface. The average crystallite size of all samples was about 20 nm. The FESEM revealed the uniformity in size and approximately spherical shape of ZnO nanopar-ticles. The BET data suggest that all prepared samples are mesoporous. All prepared samples showed higher photocatalytic efficiency in the degradation of the Reactive Orange 16 (RO16) azo dye than the commercial ZnO. In addition, Ag modified ZnO powders, especially those with 1.5 and 0.75 mol% of Ag, were more efficient than the unmodified one.

AB - Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanopowders were produced by sol-gel technique from tetrabutyl titanate as a precursor by varying some parameters of the sol-gel synthesis, such as temperature (500 and 550 degrees C) and the duration of calcination (1.5, 2 and 2.5 h). X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) results have shown that all synthesized nanopowders were dominantly in the anatase phase, with the presence of a small amount of rutile in samples calcined at 550 degrees C. According to the results obtained by the Williamson-Hall method, the anatase crystallite size was increased with the duration of the calcination (from 24 to 29 nm in samples calcined at lower temperature, and from 30 to 35 nm in samples calcined at higher temperature). The analysis of the shift and line-width of the most intensive anatase Eg Raman mode confirmed the XRPD results. The analysis of pore structure from nitrogen sorption experimental data described all samples as mesoporous, with mean pore diameters in the range of 5-8 nm. Nanopowder properties have been related to the photocatalytic activity, tested in degradation of the textile dye (C.I. Reactive Orange 16), car-bofuran ray scattering.

AB - The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of substrate preheating on the structural properties of hydroxyapatite coatings (HACs) deposited by using the high power (52 kW) laminar plasma jet. The deposition experiments were performed within the 20-200 degrees C temperature range at different stand-off distances. The structural properties in the thickness direction and at the surface of the HACs were investigated by using the micro-Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectrometry, and X-ray powder diffractometry. The deposition without the preheating of the substrate produced HACs with crystallinity gradient in the thickness direction. At the stand-off distance of 80 mm, the preheating of the substrate at 200 degrees C practically eliminated the crystallinity gradient. At distances from the coating/substrate interface shorter than similar to 100 mu m, the increase of crystallinity with the preheating of the substrate was dominantly attributed to the recrystallization of hydroxyl-rich ACP into HA. At longer distances and higher initial substrate temperatures ( GT 100 degrees C), the crystallinity changes were negligible, whereas the recrystallization of hydroxyl-deficient ACP into oxyapatite (OA) was also possible. The X-ray diffractometry indicated the deposition conditions under which a minimum residual stress was achieved. The results of the present study strongly suggested the relation between the ACP - GT HA remystallization process and the bonding strength of the HACs. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. AB - The aim of this work was to examine the dependence of the local surface structure (surface structural heterogeneity) on the local thickness (thickness uniformity) and structure properties along the thickness of hydroxyapatite coatings (HACs) deposited by using the high power (52 kW) laminar plasma jet. For the deposition process, a relatively small size of the feedstock hydroxyapatite powder (HAP) (33 mu m) was used. The HACs were deposited at different stand-off distances (SODs) (80, 100, and 150 mm) without preheating of substrates. The thickness measurements were performed by using the calibrated micrometer and light microscopy (LM). The surface micro-structure was analyzed by using the micro-Raman spectroscopy (MRS), whereas the micro-structure along the thickness of HACs was studied by using the MRS, X-ray powder diffractometry (XRPD), and LM (combined with chemical etching). The results showed a heterogeneous phase distribution on the surface of each HAC analyzed as well as the non-uniform thickness of HACs. Apparently, a correlation existed between the local surface structure and the local thickness of HACs. However, the MRS, XRPD, and LM analyses of micro-structure along the thickness of HACs indicated that the differences in the local surface structure could be related to the different recrystallization established during the plasma deposition process in the different parts along the thickness of each HAC analyzed. AB - The titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanopowders were produced by sol-gel technique from tetrabutyl titanate as a precursor, varying the temperature of calcination (from 500 to 550 degrees C with the step of 10 degrees C). XRPD results have shown that all synthesized nanopowders are dominantly in anatase phase. The analysis of the shift and linewidth of the most intensive anatase E-g Raman mode confirmed the XRPD results and added the presence of small amount of highly disordered brookite phase in all samples. The analysis of pore structure from nitrogen sorption experimental data described all samples as mesoporous, with mean pore diameters in the range of 1.5 and 4.5 nm. Nanopowder properties have been related to the photocatalytic activity, tested in degradation of the textile dye (C.I. Reactive Orange 16). The sample calcined at temperature of 510 degrees C showed the best photocatalytic performance.

AB - Two series of nanocrystalline brookite-type powders have been synthesized by using combined sal gel hydrothermal method with titanium tetrachloride (TiCI4) as a precursor and hydrothermal temperature and reaction time varied in the range of 120-200 degrees C and 12-48 h, respectively. The effects of chosen synthesis parameters on structural, morphological and optical properties of synthesized powders have been investigated by the XRPD, SEM, EDS and BET measurements, as well Raman spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry. The XRPD results have shown that pure brookite phase, with mean crystallite size of -33 nm, has been obtained only in the sample synthesized at 200 degrees C, after 24 h of hydrothermal process. In all other samples anatase phase also appears, whereas rutile and sodium titanate phases have been noticed in the samples synthesized at lower temperatures. The presence of different titania phases has also been confirmed and analyzed by Raman scattering measurements. The SEM measurements have shown spindle-like particles in brookite-rich samples synthesized at 200 degrees C, whereas BET measurements have detected mesoporous structure in these samples. The properties of synthesized powders have been correlated to their photocatalytic efficiency, tested in degradation of alprazolam, one of the 5th generation benzodiazepines. The sample consisted of pure brookite has shown the highest efficiency in the photodegradation of alprazolam, practically equal to the activity of Degussa P25. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. AB - The influence of La-doping in the range of 0.5-6.0 mol% on structural and morphological properties of TiO2 nanopowders synthesized by sol-gel routine has been investigated by XRPD, AFM, EDS and BET measurements, as well as Raman spectroscopy. The XRPD and Raman measurements have revealed the anatase phase as dominant in all nanopowders, with crystallite size decreasing from similar to 15 nm in pure TiO2 to similar to 12 nm in La-doped samples. The BET data suggest that all samples are fully mesoporous, with mean pore diameters in the range of similar to 6-8 nm. The specific surface area and the complexity of pore structure are greater in doped samples than in pure TiO2 sample. The spectroscopic ellipsometry has apparently shown that the band gap has been gradually increased with the increase of La content. The STM and STS techniques have been used successfully to evaluate the surface morphology and electronic properties of La-doped nanopowders. All investigated properties have been related to photocatalytic activity, tested in degradation of a metoprolol tartrate salt (0.05 mM), and induced by UV-radiation. All doped samples showed increased photocatalytic activity compared to pure TiO2, among which the 0.65 mol% La-doped sample appeared to be the most efficient. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. AB - Pure and La3+ doped titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanopowders were obtained by sol gel and hydrothermal methods. A precursor was titanium tetrachloride and concentrations of dopants were 0.5 and 1.0 mol%. Procedures of both methods were the same, up to the last part of synthesis (the transformation from the mother liquor to oxide nanopowders), in order to find the influence of applied methods on the properties of nanopowders. XRD results have shown that all synthesized nanopowders were in the anatase phase. It was seen from DSC measurements that anatase to rutile phase transition took place at a higher temperature with a higher concentration of dopant (La3+). The samples obtained by the sol gel method had a higher temperature of phase transition than related samples obtained by the hydrothermal method. Nanopowder properties have been related to the photocatalytic activity, tested in degradation of the pharmaceutical alprazolam. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

AB - The structure and lattice dynamics of mechanically activated BaTiO3 was investigated in this study. Phonon behavior and crystal structure stability of the obtained nanocrystalline BaTiO3 were discussed from the view point of crystallite size effects and microstrains induced by mechanical activation. A systematic study of Raman responses indicates that mechanical activation has a distinct influence on BaTiO3 lattice spectra affecting the intensity, width, and position of Raman modes. The measured Raman spectra were deconvoluted and phonon parameters were estimated. It has been established that applied mechanical activation leads to a significant decrease in the mean crystallites size, but nevertheless enables formation of tetragonal nanocrystalline BaTiO3.

AB - The structural and morphological properties of mesoporous anatase nanopowders, synthesized by sol-gel method, have been modified by varying the duration of calcination, in order to obtain more efficient photocatalyst than Degussa P25 in the degradation of relatively large pollutant molecules ( GT 1 nm in size). According to X-ray diffraction analysis, the crystallite size was increased from 13 to 17.5 nm with the increase of calcination time from 1 to 7 h. The analysis of nitrogen sorption experimental data revealed that all samples were mesoporous, with a mean pore diameters in the range of similar to 5-9 nm. The corrugated pore structure model was employed to evaluate pore structure tortuosity. Nanopowder properties have been related to the photocatalytic activity, tested in the degradation of metoprolol tartrate salt, selective beta(1)-blocker used in a variety of cardiovascular diseases, with molecular size of 0.610 nm x 1.347 nm. The study has demonstrated that samples calcined for 4 and 5 h have displayed higher photocatalytic performance than Degussa P25, whereas the sample calcined for 3 h has shown comparable activity. AB - Nanocrystalline titanium dioxide (TiO2) powders have been synthesized by sol-gel method using titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) or tetrabutyl titanate (Ti(OC4H9)(4) as precursors, different alcohols and calcination temperatures in the range from 400 to 650 A degrees C. The photocatalytic activity of as-prepared powders has been tested for the degradation of metoprolol tartrate salt, a selective beta-blocker used to treat a variety of cardiovascular diseases, and compared to photocatalytic activity obtained from Degussa P25. Nanosized TiO2 powders prepared from TiCl4 and amyl-alcohol, calcined at 550 A degrees C, displayed an activity comparable to Degussa P25, whereas the sample from the same series, calcined at 650 A degrees C, showed higher photocatalytic activity in the whole range of the catalyst loading. Structural, morphological and surface properties of synthesized TiO2 nanopowders have been investigated by XRD, SEM, EDS and BET measurements, as well as FTIR and Raman spectroscopy, in order to find out the material properties which enable rapid an efficient decomposition of metoprolol under UV radiation.

AB - In this article, in order to obtain tetragonal nanocrystalline BaTiO3, structural investigations of mechanically activated BaTiO3 powder have been performed. A mercury porosimetry analysis and scanning electron microscopy method have been applied for determination of the specific pore volume, porosity and microstructure morphology of the samples. The lattice vibration spectra of nonactivated and activated powders, their phase composition, lattice microstrains and the mean size of coherently diffracting domains were examined by Raman spectroscopy and the X-ray powder diffraction method. The average crystal structure of obtained nanocrystalline powders, estimated from X-ray diffraction data, gave evidence of retained, but slightly sustained tetragonality of powders, even for particles as small as similar to 30 nm. Raman spectroscopy also gave clear evidence for local tetragonal symmetries, in particular through the presence of a band at similar to 307 cm(-1). (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. AB - Ultrafine porous cerium dioxide nanopowders were synthesized by relatively new and cost-effective hydrothermal method varying the main synthesis parameters, temperature of calcination and type of basic solution. Characterization of the as-produced powders was performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman scattering and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method. This study reveals that difference in synthesis parameters has strong influence on the particle size, surface area, and pore size distribution enabling the more precise control of material properties very important for catalytic and nanosensor applications. AB - We have measured the Raman scattering and magnetization of pure and Fe2+(Fe3+) doped CeO2 nanopowders at room temperature. The Raman scattering spectra revealed the existence of CeO2 fluorite cubic structure for all investigated samples. The Raman active mode at about 600 cm(-1), seen in all samples, can be ascribed to the CeO2 intrinsic oxygen vacancies. Additional Raman modes at 720 cm(-1), 1320 cm(-1) and 1600 cm(-1), which appear in the spectra of doped samples, can be assigned to maghemite (gamma-Fe2O3) cation deficient structure, to 2 omega(LO) IR-allowed overtone and two magnon structure, respectively. This implies that our powders are composed of mixed valence states and have defective structure. Presence of oxygen defect states and magnetic ions can be responsible for the observed ferromagnetism at room temperature in both pure and Fe doped samples.

AB - Pure and 10 mol% Fe3+ doped CeO2 nanocrystals were synthesized by hydrothermal method using two different basic solutions (NH4OH and NaOH). All the samples were calcinated at 140 degrees C and 200 degrees C. The characterization of crystalline structure, vibrational and optical properties was performed using X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and spectroscopic ellipsometry. The obtained results showed that the Fe-doped samples are solid solutions with different size of nanocrystals, very dependent on the synthesis temperature and type of basic solution. The Raman measurements demonstrated electron molecular vibrational coupling and increase of oxygen vacancy concentration whereas doping provokes a small decrease of optical absorption edge in comparison with pure ceria.

AB - Raman spectra of Nd doped ceria nanocrystals were measured by gradual heating and cooling over the temperature range of 293-1073 K and analyzed using the phonon confinement model that incorporates inhomogeneous strain and anharmonic effects. We have demonstrated that in nanograins, four-phonon anharmonic processes are more dominant at higher temperatures than size effects. After the heat treatment, Nd doped ceria nanocrystals remain of nanometric range (similar to 20 nm) while the concentration of oxygen vacancies is still high in ceria lattice, making this material convenient for solid oxide fuel cells application. AB - A series of Ce1-xBaxO2-y (5 LT = x LT = 0.20) nanometric powders were synthesized by self-propagating room temperature synthesis. XRD and Raman scattering measurements were used to characterize the samples. at room temperature. All the samples are solid solutions with fluorite type structure with an average crystallite size about 5 nm. The redshift and asymmetric broadening of the Raman F g mode can be well explained with combined confinement and strain effects because of the nanocrystalline powders nature. The appearance of the additional peaks at similar to 560 cm(-1) and similar to 600 cm(-1), are attributed to extrinsic and intrinsic O2- vacancies in ceria lattice. Raman spectra of temperature treated Ce0.80Ba0.20O2-delta sample revealed the instability of this system.

AB - Nanopowdered solid solution Ce1-xY(Nd)(x)O2-delta samples ( 0.1 LT = x LT = 0.25) were made by self-propagating room temperature (SPRT) synthesis. The first-order Raman spectra of Ce1-xY(Nd)(x)O2-delta samples measured at room temperature exhibit three broad features: the main Raman active F-2g mode at about 450 cm(-1) and two broad features at about 550 (545) and 600 cm-1. The mode at similar to 600 cm(-1) was assigned to the intrinsic oxygen vacancies due to the nonstoichiometry of ceria nanopowders. The mode at about 550 (545) cm(-1) was attributed to the oxygen vacancies introduced into the ceria lattice whenever Ce4+ ions are replaced with trivalent cations (Y3+, Nd3+). The intensity of this mode increases with doping in both series of samples, indicating a change of O2- vacancy concentration. The mode frequency shifts in opposite direction in Y- and Nd-doped samples with doping level, suggesting that different types of defect space can occur in Y- and Nd-doped ceria nanopowders.

AB - Nanosized titanium dioxide (TiO2) is synthesized by laser-induced pyrolysis using titanium isopropoxide as a liquid precursor. The specific surface area of as-produced nanopowders measured by the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method (BET) varies from 84 to 110 m(2)g(-1). X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman scattering, showed that the TiO2 nanocrystals had an anatase structure. The rain size of the nanoparticles was estimated from scanning electron microscopy, XRD and BET measurements. The reflection spectra of nanocrystalline TiO2 pressed pellets has been measured in the region between 80 and 1500 cm(-1) by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. To interpret the experimental results, a model based on a generalized Bruggeman effective medium approximation of a dielectric function has been proposed. It is based on the polycrystalline character of TIO2 nanoparticles including island-structure and porosity of the nanopowders, along with the anatase single crystal dielectric functions. Thus, by comparing the results of calculated and experimental infrared (IR) spectra, the values of microscopic parameters of nanocrystalline powders can be deduced.
