AB - The unbound proton-rich nuclei 16F and 15F are investigated experimentally and theoretically. Several experiments using the resonant elastic scattering method were performed at GANIL with radioactive beams to determine the properties of the low lying states of these nuclei. Strong asymmetry between 16F–16N and 15F–15C mirror nuclei is observed. The strength of the nucleon- nucleon effective interaction involving the loosely bound proton in the s1 / 2 orbit is significantly modified with respect to their mirror nuclei 16N and 15C. The reduction of the effective interaction is estimated by calculating the interaction energies with a schematic zero-range force. It is found that, after correcting for the effects due to changes in the radial distribution of the single-particle wave functions, the mirror symmetry of the n- p interaction is preserved between 16F and 16N, while a difference of 63% is measured between the p- p versus n- n interactions in the second excited state of 15F and 15C nuclei. Several explanations are proposed. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Società Italiana di Fisica and Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

AB - Single-neutron and single-proton removal cross sections have been measured for medium-mass neutron-rich nuclei around Z=50 and energies around 1000A MeV using the FRagment Separator (FRS) at GSI. The measured cross sections confirm the relative low values of the proton-removal cross sections, observed since a long time ago and not yet understood. Model calculations considering the knock-out process together with initial- and final-state interactions describe the measured neutron-removal cross sections. Proton-removal cross sections are, however, significantly over-predicted by the same calculations. The observed difference can be explained to a large extent by the knock-out of short-range correlated nucleons from dominant neutron-proton pairs in neutron-rich nuclei. © 2020 The Author(s)

AB - The life time distribution measurements of the alpha emitter Po-216 have been performed with semiconductor detectors. We applied a new method to obtain the distribution of time intervals between the correlated signals of decay of the Po-216. The deduced half-life of Po-216 was found to be 144.0(6) ms, supporting the earlier published measurements and with an uncertainty much lower than any other previously reported value. AB - Intense and purified radioactive beam of post-accelerated O-14 was used to study the low-lying states in the unbound F-15 nucleus. Exploiting resonant elastic scattering in inverse kinematics with a thick target, the second excited state, a resonance at E-R = 4.757(6)(10) MeV with a width of Gamma = 36(5)(14) keV was measured for the first time with high precision. The structure of this narrow above-barrier state in a nucleus located two neutrons beyond the proton drip line was investigated using the Gamow Shell Model in the coupled channel representation with a C-12 core and three valence protons. It is found that it is an almost pure wave function of two quasi-bound protons in the 2s(1/2) shell. (C) 2016 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

AB - The level structures of the N = 50 As-83, Ge-82, and Ga-81 isotones have been investigated by means of multi-nucleon transfer reactions. A first experiment was performed with the CLARA PRISMA setup to identify these nuclei. A second experiment was carried out with the GASP array in order to deduce the gamma-ray coincidence information. The results obtained on the high-spin states of such nuclei are used to test the stability of the N = 50 shell closure in the region of Ni-78 (Z = 28). The comparison of the experimental level schemes with the shell-model calculations yields an N = 50 energy gap value of 4.7(3) MeV at Z = 28. This value, in a good agreement with the prediction of the finite-range liquid-drop model as well as with the recent large-scale shell model calculations, does not support a weakening of the N = 50 shell gap down to Z = 28. AB - We propose a new method for determination of temperature in spallation events. It is shown that temperature can be determined by applying the friction model of energy dissipation in participant-spectator model of a spallation process. First order estimate of temperature dependence of the participant zone on reaction Q-value is obtained from the Fermi gas model considerations. The heat diffusion process is also discussed.

AB - The fragmentation of neutron-rich Sn-132 nuclei produced in the fission of U-238 projectiles at 950 A MeV has been investigated at the FRagment Separator (FRS) at GSI. This work represents the first investigation of fragmentation of medium-mass radioactive projectiles with a large neutron excess. The measured production cross sections of the residual nuclei are relevant for the possible use of a two-stage reaction scheme (fission + fragmentation) for the production of extremely neutron-rich medium-mass nuclei in future rare-ion-beam facilities. Moreover, the new data will provide a better understanding of the memory effect in fragmentation reactions. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - A new gas-filled operation mode of the large-acceptance spectrometer VAMOS at GANIL is reported. A beam rejection factor greater than 10(10) is obtained for the Ca-40+Sm-150 system at 196 MeV. The unprecedented transmission efficiency for the evaporation residues produced in this reaction is estimated to be around 80% for alpha x n channels and above 95% for x ny p channels. A detailed study of the performance of the gas-filled VAMOS and future developments are discussed. This new operation mode opens avenues to explore the potential of fusion reactions in various kinematics. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - The radial evolution of the matter distributions with neutron excess has been investigated at GSI measuring total interaction cross sections for long isotopic chains of medium-mass nuclei. Comparisons with different model calculations show a clear increase of the total interaction cross sections for the most neutron-rich nuclei that we interpret as a signature for a larger matter radius of those nuclei.

AB - In our study of the reaction Ne-20+Al-27 at energy of 84 A MeV, the track detectors were used to select the target like fragments arising from processes in which the interacting system becomes disintegrated into a large number of constituent nucleons and one massive fragment. Heavy ion reaction studies at bombarding energies of several tens of MeV/nucleon have provided the evidence that most of reaction cross section, in this energy range, is associated with the production of primary projectile like and target like fragment in the first step of the nuclear reaction. The subsequent evolution of the studied reaction systems, has been usually described either using low energy models based on mean field effects (WE), or high energy models where reaction proceeds by independent collisions (INC) of individual nucleons in the overlap region between target and projectile. The analysis of our results in terms of different MFE and INC models, prescribing consistent timings, has shown that the reaction mechanism may be defined of interplay of the mean field and individual nucleon collisions effects.

AB - Excitation functions for total reaction cross sections, sigma(R), were measured for the light, mainly proton-rich nuclei Li-6, Be-7, B-10, C-9,C-10,C-11, N-12, O-13,O-15, and Ne-17 incident on a Si telescope at energies between 15 and 53 MeV/nucleon. The telescope served as target, energy degrader and detector. Proton-removal cross sections, sigma(2p) for Ne-17 and sigma(p) for most of the other projectiles, were also measured. The strong absorption model reproduces the A-dependence of sigma(R), but not the detailed structure. Glauber multiple scattering theory and the Jeukenne, Lejeune, and Mahaux (JLM) folding model provided improved descriptions of the measured sigma(R) values. Rms radii, extracted from the measured sigma(R) using the optical limit of Glauber theory, are in good agreement with those obtained from high energy data. One-proton removal reactions are described using an extended Glauber model, incorporating second order noneikonal corrections, realistic single particle densities, and spectroscopic factors from shell model calculations.

AB - Total reaction cross sections sigma (R) of all particle-stable Be isotopes on Si, and several of their neutron-removal cross sections sigma (-xn), were measured near (30-60)A MeV by injecting magnetically separated, focused, monoenergetic secondary beams of these projectiles into a telescope containing nine Si transmission detectors. Similar measurements were made for Be10-12 on Pb, by placing Pb targets between the Si detectors of another telescope. A Glauber analysis of the Be+Si sigma (R) data, including only nuclear forces, yields rms radii for the Be isotopes in general agreement with those found by other workers. Similar calculations underpredict the CTR data for Be+Pb, showing the importance of electromagnetic dissociation. A simple microscopic theory reproduces the n-removal cross sections for Be-11 and Be-14 on Si, but overpredicts n removal for Be-11 on Ph. For Be-12 incident upon both Si and Pb targets, sigma (-2n) significantly exceeds sigma (-n), as is expected since 1n removal leaves the weakly bound halo nucleus Be-11. A similar effect for Be-10 on Si is attributed to the weak binding of the last neutron of Be-9; however, for Be-10+Pb, sigma (-n) slightly exceeds sigma (-2n).

All these sigma(R)s (except He-4), and sigma-(2n) for He-6 and Li-11, are underpredicted by microscopic model calculations which include only nuclear forces. Better agreement is achieved by including electromagnetic dissociation in the model, for those projectiles for which either the electric dipole response functions or the dominant photodissociation cross sections were known. The cross sections sigma-(4n) for He-8, sigma-(xn) for Li-7,Li-8,Li-9, and (sigma-(3n)+ sigma-(4n)) for Li-11 were found to be less than or equal to 0.7 b. All sigma(R)s were measured to better than 5% accuracy, showing that the method is usable for other target elements sandwiched into a Si telescope.

AB - Total reaction cross sections, sigma(R), on Si were measured near 40 A MeV for the proton-halo candidate N-12 and the two-proton-halo candidate Ne-17, and were compared with sigma(R) for other light proton-rich nuclei. The A-dependence shows enhanced sigma(R)s for N-12 and Ne-17, relative to their neighbors, but the effect is smaller than for B-8 which has been argued to have a proton halo. In general, nuclei with loosely bound last protons (S-p less than or equal to 1.5 MeV) have significantly larger sigma(R)S than their neighbors. Cross sections for charge-removal from N-12 and Ne-17 also were obtained. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.

abstract = "Total reaction cross sections, sigma(R), on Si were measured near 40 A MeV for the proton-halo candidate N-12 and the two-proton-halo candidate Ne-17, and were compared with sigma(R) for other light proton-rich nuclei. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.",

AB - A system of reduced differential equations generally valid for plane-parallel, cylindrical and spherical ionization chambers, which is appropriate for numerical solution, has been derived. The system has been solved numerically for plane-parallel and spherical ionization chambers filled with air. The comparison of the calculated results of Armstrong and Tate, for plane-parallel ionization chambers, and Sprinkle and Tate, for spherical ionization chambers, with the present calculations has shown a good agreement. The calculated values for ionization chambers filled with CO2 were also in good agreement with the experimental data of Moriuchi et al.
