AB - In this study, the thermal and hydrolytic properties of composite systems based on the urea–formaldehyde resin (UF) and eco-friendly montmorillonite (K10) as formaldehyde (FA) scavenger were examined. UF resin with molar ratio FA:U = 0.8 was synthesized in situ with inactivated, and activated K10. K10 was activated by sulfuric acid (H2SO4) with and without magnetic stirring. The samples are marked with $${\mathrm{K}10}_{\left({\mathrm{H}}_{2}{\mathrm{SO}}_{4}\right)}$$,$${\mathrm{K}10}_{{\left({\mathrm{H}}_{2}{\mathrm{SO}}_{4 }\right)}_{\mathrm{ST}}}$$, $${\mathrm{UF}/\mathrm{K}10}_{\left({\mathrm{H}}_{2}{\mathrm{SO}}_{4 }\right)}$$, and $${\mathrm{UF}/\mathrm{K}10}_{{\left({\mathrm{H}}_{2}{\mathrm{SO}}_{4 }\right)}_{\mathrm{ST}}}$$, respectively. X-ray diffraction analysis and non-isothermal thermogravimetric analysis, supported by data from Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to characterize the samples. Based on the measurement of specific surface area (SSA), the degree of activation was determined. Measurement of the SSA shows that higher values were obtained for modified K10 compared to inactive K10. The amount of free and liberated FA was 0.06% and 4.6% for $${\mathrm{UF}/\mathrm{K}10}_{\left({\mathrm{H}}_{2}{\mathrm{SO}}_{4 }\right)}$$and 0.12% and 4% for $${\mathrm{UF}/\mathrm{K}10}_{{\left({\mathrm{H}}_{2}{\mathrm{SO}}_{4 }\right)}_{\mathrm{ST}}}$$. This research showed that the $${\mathrm{UF}/\mathrm{K}10}_{\left({\mathrm{H}}_{2}{\mathrm{SO}}_{4 }\right)}$$composite has a lesser amount of free FA (0.06%) in comparison to the $${\mathrm{UF}/\mathrm{K}10}_{{\left({\mathrm{H}}_{2}{\mathrm{SO}}_{4 }\right)}_{\mathrm{ST}}}$$composite (0.12%). The $${\mathrm{UF}/\mathrm{K}10}_{{\left({\mathrm{H}}_{2}{\mathrm{SO}}_{4 }\right)}_{\mathrm{ST}}}$$composite has a higher resistance to acidic hydrolysis. The modified $${\mathrm{UF}/\mathrm{K}10}_{\left({\mathrm{H}}_{2}{\mathrm{SO}}_{4}\right)}$$composite is more thermally stable than $${\mathrm{UF}/\mathrm{K}10}_{{\left({\mathrm{H}}_{2}{\mathrm{SO}}_{4 }\right)}_{\mathrm{ST}}}$$composite.

AB - The present study aimed to examine the effect of Lactobacillus rhamnosus Rosell 11 and Lactobacillus helveticus Rosell 52 on glucose (blood level and tolerance), lipids (cholesterol and triglycerides), transaminases (AST and ALT), ALP, urea, and creatinine, along with body weight, food intake, liquid consumption, and gross pathology in a mouse model of metabolic syndrome. Male C57BL/6J mice were fed a high-fat high-sucrose diet and treated by oral gavage with a probiotic mixture in three different concentrations (107, 108, and 109 CFU/mL) once daily for 2 months. Probiotic supplementation, particularly at a concentration of 109 CFU, significantly decreased blood glucose and serum triglyceride levels, improved glucose tolerance, and promoted body weight loss in mice fed a high-fat high-sucrose diet. According to the obtained results, probiotic supplementation is useful for controlling glucose and triglyceride levels and could be used as an adjunctive therapeutic approach in patients with metabolic syndrome.

AB - The hydrolytic stability of two nano-SiO2-based UF composites with derivates of coumarin (names as K-1 and K-2) was investigated. K-1 is 3-nitro-4-(p-tolylamino)-2H-chromen-2-one and K-2: 4-((3-nitro-2-oxo-2H-chromen-4-yl)amino)benzenesulfonamide. Two types of nano-silica-based urea–formaldehyde (UF), composite materials with a formaldehyde-to-urea (F/U) ratio of 0.8, were synthesized (UF/K-1/SiO2, and UF/K-2/SiO2). The hydrolytic stability of modified UF composite was determined by measuring the mass loss and liberated formaldehyde concentration of modified UF composite after acid hydrolysis. Obtained results showed that the hydrolytic stability of modified resins with derivates of coumarin was enhanced. The formaldehyde emission of modified UF/K-1/SiO2 composite is lower compared with UF/K-2/SiO2 composite. The thermal behavior of materials was studied by non-isothermal thermo-gravimetric analysis and differential thermal gravimetry supported by data from ATR-IR spectroscopy. The shift of temperature values for selected mass losses (T5%) to a high temperature indicates the increase in thermal stability of samples based on UF resin modified with K-2. © 2020, Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature.

AB - The homemade, porous carbon material, thermolysis prepared from Novolac phenol-formaldehyde resin, in situ modified with Co3O4 nanoparticles and mixed with single-wall carbon nanotubes, was used in selective sensing of prominent antioxidant α-lipoic acid (LA). XRD, SEM and EIS measurements were used for characterization of material composition, structure, morphology and improved conductivity. The quantification of LA at TPCo3O4&SWCNTCPE was done by a square-wave voltammetric technique in BR buffer solution at pH 6. The linear working range was recorded from 2 to 100 μM of LA and the proposed electrode material was successfully applied in the determination of LA in dietary supplements.

AB - The goal of this work was to develop green electrode material that unites all advantages of domestic made, synthesized porous carbon powder and ceria dioxide nanoparticles known due to exceptional catalytic properties. Thermal decomposition of Novolac phenol-formaldehyde resin and cerium sulfate resulting in producing a high-performance CeO2 porous carbon material highly sensitive to dopamine (DA) electrooxidation. Morphological and structural characteristics of the material were determined by SEM and XRD measurements, while electrochemical characterization was performed by EIS and CV. The sensitivity of DA determination on the proposed CeO2-doped carbon material was enhanced by adding multi-wall carbon nanotubes to finally prepare a mixture for a specific carbon paste electrode (TPCeO2&MWCNT@CPE). SWV technique was used for quantification of dopamine in Britton-Robinson buffer pH 6 in the concentration range of 0.5-100 μM of DA, with the detection limit of 0.14 μM and quantification limit of 0.44 μM. Good selectivity overstudied bioactive compounds enables the successful and efficient application of the proposed electrode and developed an analytical procedure for the determination of dopamine in spiked urine samples.

AB - In order to ensure high food quality, one of the prime importance is the detection and quantification of histamine, well known marine food poison. In this work, we constructed novel electrochemical biosensor for the detection of histamine based on gold nanoparticles decorated on manganese dioxide (Au/MnO2) and used for modification of screen-printed carbon electrode (Au/MnO2@SPCE). The constructed sensor was then used for the estimation of histamine content in a single drop. Materials used in this study were synthesized and characterized using HR-TEM, XRPD and electrochemical methods. The amperometric detection method was optimized and, under selected operating parameters (supporting electrolyte pH 6, working potential of 1 V), the proposed sensor possesses linear working range from 0.3 µM to 5.1 µM, with a detection limit of 0.08 µM. The effect of selected interferences was investigated and it was found that the developed approach offers accurate, precise, selective, fast and reproducible quantification of histamine using only one drop of the sample. In the end, this work stands as a proof-of-concept of the modified electrodes and electrochemical detection as a promising and prospective approach for the applications in real-time monitoring of the food quality.

AB - Mefenamic acid and indomethacin, medicaments belonging to the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents, were determined separately and simultaneously at anodically prepared BDDE. Differential pulse voltammetry was used to establish simple and fast analytical procedure based on electrooxidation of mefenamic acid at 0.6 V and indomethacin at 1.0 V (and 1.1 V). At optimal conditions, it was suitable for highly sensitive and selective determination of these compounds with LODs comparable to previously reported modified electrodes. Additionally, considering the importance of these compounds, we proposed precise and accurate quantification of these species based on green and simple pre-treatable electrochemical sensor. The effect of interfering agents (tablet ingredients and vitamins) was appeared to be negligibly confirming a favourable selectivity of the method. The proposed method was analytically applied by simultaneously determining mefenamic acid and indomethacin in pharmaceutical formulations. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.

AB - Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) degradation of the organophosphorus pesticides azamethiphos (AZA) and dimethoate (DM) (10 mg/L) in deionized water and in Sava River water was investigated for the first time. Pesticide degradation was studied in terms of ClO2 level (5 and 10 mg/L), degradation duration (0.5, 1, 2, 3, 6, and 24 h), pH (3.00, 7.00, and 9.00), and under light/dark conditions in deionized water. Degradation was monitored using high-performance liquid chromatography. Gas chromatography coupled with triple quadrupole mass detector was used to identify degradation products of pesticides. Total organic carbon was measured to determine the extent of mineralization after pesticide degradation. Real river water was used under recommended conditions to study the influence of organic matter on pesticide degradation. High degradation efficiency (88–100% for AZA and 85–98% for DM) was achieved in deionized water under various conditions, proving the flexibility of ClO2 degradation for the examined organophosphorus pesticides. In Sava River water, however, extended treatment duration achieved lower degradation efficiency, so ClO2 oxidized both the pesticides and dissolved organic matter in parallel. After degradation, AZA produced four identified products (6-chlorooxazolo[4,5-b]pyridin-2(3H)-one; O,O,S-trimethyl phosphorothioate; 6-chloro-3-(hydroxymethyl)oxazolo[4,5-b]pyridin-2(3H)-one; O,O-dimethyl S-hydrogen phosphorothioate) and DM produced three (O,O-dimethyl S-(2-(methylamino)-2-oxoethyl) phosphorothioate; e.g., omethoate; S-(2-(methylamino)-2-oxoethyl) O,O-dihydrogen phosphorothioate; O,O,S-trimethyl phosphorodithioate). Simple pesticide degradation mechanisms were deduced. Daphnia magna toxicity tests showed degradation products were less toxic than parent compounds. These results contribute to our understanding of the multiple influences that organophosphorus pesticides and their degradation products have on environmental ecosystems and to improving pesticide removal processes from water.

AB - The aim of this study was to investigate, analyze, and compare applied techniques suitable for achieving efficient removal of organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) (malathion and fenitrothion) from aqueous solutions and analyze the degradation products and processes. Pesticide degradation efficiency (%) was monitored by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) equipped with a photodiode array detector (DAD), while mineralization degree was determined by total organic carbon analysis (TOC). Daphnia magna was used for screening the environmental safety aspects of the degradation methods, i.e., for assessing the toxicity of solutions obtained after degradation. Additionally, a surface river water was utilized to examine the likely influence of organic matter on the pesticides’ degradation. Pesticide degradation products were identified using gas chromatography with a triple quadrupole mass detector (GC-MS/MS) as well as ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography coupled with a linear ion trap, Orbitrap mass spectrometer (UHPLC-LTQ Orbitrap MS), and a simple pesticide degradation mechanism is proposed. Removal of pesticides from water using chlorine dioxide was successful, resulting in high degradation efficiency (98% for malathion and 81% for fenitrothion). Partial mineralization was achieved, and Daphnia magna mortality decreased in the waters containing degradation products (compared with the parent pesticides), indicating that the solutions formed were less toxic than the parent pesticides. Lower degradation rates (80% for malathion and 72% for fenitrothion) in Sava River water were measured, indicating the influence of the organic matter contained in this naturally occurring surface water. The results prove that chlorine dioxide could be used as an agent for successful removal of these OPPs from water.

AB - The thermal stability of organic-inorganic nano-composites prepared by a two-stage polymerization of urea-formaldehyde resin (UF) with furfuryl alcohol (FA) and TiO2 before and after irradiation has been researched. The two resins of urea-formaldehyde–TiO2 composites, named: UF/TiO2 and UF/TiO2/FA, were synthesized. The thermal stability of obtained materials was studied by non-isothermal thermo-gravimetric analysis (TG), differential thermal gravimetry (DTG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA). UF hybrid composites have been irradiated (50 kGy) and after that their radiation stability was evaluated on the basis of thermal behavior. The free formaldehyde (HCOH) percentage in all prepared samples was determined. The minimum percentage values of free formaldehyde (0.04% and 0.03%) for UF/TiO2 and UF/TiO2/FA, respectively, after irradiation dose of 50 kGy are detected. The shift of temperature values for selected mass losses (T10%) to a high temperature indicates the increase in thermal stability of samples based on UF resin modified with FA.

AB - Bentazone (BZ) is selective contact-past herbicide with suspected reproductive toxicity potential for human due to possible contamination of ground and surface waters. This work presents simple, rapid, sensitive and accurate determination of bentazone at unmodified boron-doped diamond electrode, using differential pulse voltammetry in Britton-Robinson buffer (pH 4, oxidation peak at 1.0 V). Under optimized DPV conditions linear calibration curve was obtained for range of 2 to 100 mu M, with a detection limit of 0.5 mu M. The effect of possible interfering agents is negligible, confirming good selectivity of the method. The method was successfully applied to determination of bentazone in spiked river water samples. This electrochemical determination of bentazone represents a favorable alternative to other used time-consuming and expensive analytical techniques and procedures.

AB - The degradation of two sulfonylurea herbicides, nicosulfuron and thifensulfuron methyl in water by chlorine dioxide, was studied for the first time in this paper. In order to examine the optimal parameters for degradation of both herbicides, degradation was investigated under light or dark conditions with different amount of chlorine dioxide, different degradation periods, and at different pH values. Degradation efficiency of herbicides was monitored using high-performance liquid chromatography with photodiode array detection (HPLC-DAD). The degradation products were analyzed by gas chromatography with triple quadrupole mass detector (GC–QQQ). Three products were identified after degradation of nicosulfuron and two products after degradation of thifensulfuron methyl. Total organic analysis (TOC) gave insight into some differences in degradation mechanisms and degrees of mineralization after degradation of the herbicides using chlorine dioxide. A simple mechanism of herbicide degradation was proposed. Acute toxicity tests were performed on the products produced after degradation with chlorine dioxide, and the results showed that the degradation products were less toxic than the parent compounds. The findings of the present study are very useful for the treatment of wastewaters contaminated with herbicides. © 2018, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

AB - This work present a new approach for the detection of relatively new herbicide pethoxamid (POA), a first electrochemical behavior and determination based on its oxidation on boron-doped diamond electrode in Britton-Robinson buffer solution at pH 4. Square wave voltammetric technique was used for quantification of POA at anodic potential of 1.35 V vs reference Ag/AgCl electrode. The proposed electroanalytical method is operational in the linear working range from 3 to 100 μM of POA with a limit of detection of 1.37 μM. The developed analytical procedure was successfully tested for determination of this herbicide in standard/spiked river water samples and commercial herbicide Successor T SE/spiked river water samples, offering a simple, fast and inexpensive alternative way of pesticide determining to chromatographic methods employed for this purpose.

AB - In this work, for the first time we proposed electrochemical behavior and development of an analytical procedure for quantification of pesticide clomazone. Electrochemical behavior of clomazone's at boron-doped diamond electrode is characterized with irreversible oxidation at potential of around 1.6 V, in Britton-Robinson buffer solution at pH 2. It was found that potential of this oxidation was not pH dependent excluding presence of proton in the electrochemical reaction. Square wave voltammetry method was the most appropriate for clomazone quantification and proposed procedure was successfully applied for determination of clomazone in river water samples. Obtained parameters, detection limit of 0.21 mu M and working linear range from 1 to 100 mu M and satisfied selectivity can indicate that presented results open new field in research of this group of pesticides and offer possible replacement to the sophisticated and expensive chromatographic methods.

AB - In this work, the electrochemical behaviour and the subsequent development of an analytical procedure for quantification of pesticide azamethiphos, using boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode are reported for the first time. It was found that azamethiphos electrochemical behaviour is irreversible oxidation at the potential of around 1.70 V, in 1 M nitric acid (pH 0). Also, it was found that potential of this oxidation was not pH dependent which can be attributed to the no proton involvement in electrochemical reaction on the electrode surface. The square wave voltammetric method was most appropriate for azamethiphos quantification. Under optimised experimental conditions, linear working range from 2 to 100 µM was estimated with the detection limit of 0.45 µM. Negligible effect of the possible interfering compound was observed. The obtained results show that the developed analytical methodology can be an adequate replacement for the, up to date, used methods for detection of organophosphorous pesticide. © 2018, © 2018 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.

AB - A simple and fast method for determination of two phenothiazine drugs, chlorpromazine (CPZ) and thioridazine (TDZ), at the boron-doped diamond electrode (BDDE) was proposed. Oxidation peaks on potentials higher than 1 V were used for quantitation of investigated phenothiazines due to better selectivity over common interfering compounds in urine. Differential pulse voltammetry was applied for trace determination of CPZ and TDZ, in Britton-Robinson buffer solution at optimal pH. Under optimized DPV conditions a linear analytical curve was obtained from 1.0x10(-7) to 4.0x10(-5) M with a detection limit of 0.3x10(-7) M (for CPZ) and in the concentration range of 2x10(-7) M to 4.0x10(-5) M, with a detection limit of 1.2x10(-7)M (for TDZ). The applicability of the method was proved by determination of CPZ and TDZ by proposed procedures in spiked urine samples. The electrochemical behavior of those two important tranquilizers in different solvents was described, exploring the possibility of simultaneous determination.

abstract = "A simple and fast method for determination of two phenothiazine drugs, chlorpromazine (CPZ) and thioridazine (TDZ), at the boron-doped diamond electrode (BDDE) was proposed. The electrochemical behavior of those two important tranquilizers in different solvents was described, exploring the possibility of simultaneous determination.",

AB - In this study, the thermal behavior of modified urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin with nanosilica (nano-SiO2), wood flour (WF), and their mixture of SiO2/WF was investigated. Five modified UF hybrid composite materials with 0.8 F/U ratio with different filler were synthesized using the same procedure. The thermal behavior of materials was studied using nonisothermal thermogravimetric analysis, differential thermal gravimetry (DTG), and differential thermal analysis and supported by data from infrared spectroscopy. The shift of DTG peaks to a high temperature indicates the increase in thermal stability of modified UF resin with hybrid SiO2/WF fillers, which is confirmed by the data obtained from the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic study. It was estimated that the UF/WF samples based on nano-SiO2 have better thermal stability.

AB - The hydrolytic stability and thermal behavior of organic-inorganic composites prepared by two-stage polymerization of urea-formaldehyde resin (UF) with micro-and nano-TiO2 before and after irradiation has been investigated. Composites of urea-formaldehyde and particles of TiO2 of different sizes were synthesized, namely: UF/micro-TiO2 and UF/nano-TiO2. The hydrolytic stability of the modified UF composites was determined by measuring the mass loss and liberated formaldehyde concentration of modified UF composites after acid hydrolysis. The studied modified UF composites have been irradiated (50 kGy) and the effect of gamma-irradiation was evaluated on the basis of the percentage of liberated formaldehyde before and after irradiation. The minimum percentage (0.16%) of liberated formaldehyde was obtained in nano-TiO2 modified UF resin after gamma-irradiation which indicated a significant improvement in the hydrolytic stability compared with micro-TiO2 modified UF resin (0.52%). The effect of gamma-irradiation was evaluated also on the basis of the thermal behavior of the same modified UF composites before and after irradiation. The thermal behavior was studied by non-isothermal thermogravimetric analysis (TG), differential thermo-gravimetry (DTG) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) supported by data from attenuated total reflection infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy. DTG peaks of both composites are shifted to a higher temperature after irradiation, but UF/micro-TiO2 after gamma-irradiation shows less change in the thermal behavior than nano-TiO2. In other words, UF/micro-TiO2 shows better radiation stability. Gamma irradiation causes a minor effect on the ATR-IR spectra, specifically the decrease of the intensities of some bands.
