AB - Electrodeposition of selected d-metals by in-situ electrodeposition as a method for improvement of electrocatalytic activity of conventional electrodes for alkaline hydrogen evolution has been attracting the attention of researchers for about two decades. The modification of metal electrodes by ionic activators as a combination of two (binary systems) or three (ternary systems) d-metal complexes added in electrolytic solution were represented in many studies. Better catalytic performances and higher energy efficiency compared to the common electrodes is provided by a number of affordable and inexpensive solutions resulting from this research. Based on the combinations of selected d-metal complexes added in-situ to the electrolyte during electrolysis, this work provides a systematic overview of the binary and ternary systems of ionic activators, that contribute to energy savings in alkaline electrolysers, with the particular attention paid to the discussion of similarities and universal principles. Theoretical background and the fundamental properties that lay beyond the observed improvements of electrode performance upon activation by ionic activators is also represented.

AB - Material SBA-15 with all of its particles in the form of regular spheres was synthesised by template method using
Pluronic P123 (non-ionic triblock copolymer) as a surfactant and tetraethoxysilane (TEOS, 98%) as a source of silica.
The synthesis of spherical SBA-15 was carried out in acidic conditions according to method proposed by Zhao et al.
Instead of expensive commercial cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as a co-surfactant, a spent HCl solution obtained
after the chemical treatment of clay in an aqueous solution of HCl was used. The mixture was aged at a higher
temperature. After that, the spherical SBA-15 was made by drying at room temperature after washing with distilled
water and then calcining in flowing air to decompose the triblock copolymer. The continual presence of spheres
of diameters around 2 μm in the entire SBA-15 was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. The Energy-dispersive
X-ray spectroscopy confirmed that the spheres consisted only of SiO2 in composition. In addition, X-ray diffraction and
Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy methods were used to characterise SBA-15 material. To assess the cytotoxic
effects of newly synthesised SBA-15 material, HEK 293 cells were treated with particles and extracts obtained from
particles incubated 24 hours at 37 °C in serum-free DMEM medium and DMEM with 10% serum. Cells were treated
with concentrations of 100, 250, and 500 µg/mL for 72 hours. All treatments reduced cell viability in a concentrationdependent manner (p<0.001). Cytotoxicity was more pronounced in particle treatment, indicating that mechanical
damage was induced in cells, whereas the extraction process influences the level of toxicity since the sera-free medium
had the mildest effect. To acquire safe particles for human use, additional synthesis optimisation is required.

AB - In this paper, the effects of the addition of silicon nitride seeds on the phase composition, particle size, and shape of silicon nitride powders obtained by carbothermal reduction-nitridation were studied. Environmentally friendly natural raw material, diatomaceous earth, was used as a Si precursor. Three different carbon sources were used: activated carbon, carbonized sucrose, and carbon cryogel as reducing agents in the molar ratio C/SiO2 = 5. To obtain better-quality Si3N4 powder, the commercial α-Si3N4 powder was added into starting mixtures as seeds in four different quantities. The X-ray diffraction, specific surface area, infrared spectroscopy with Fourier transform, and scanning electron microscopy were employed to characterize the obtained powders. Sucrose as a carbon source enables a major reduction of SiO2 and the onset of β-Si3N4 crystallization at a lower temperature (1350 °C) as well as the complete absence of diatomaceous earth relics. It indicates that the carbothermal reduction-nitridation takes place faster in contrast to the other two carbon sources.

AB - Effect of methyl methacrylate (MMA) as a binder and heating treatment were investigated to improve green alumina compacts machinability. Properties of green compacts and their corresponding sintered samples prepared with and without MMA were compared. Investigation of green and sintered properties was performed on samples compacted at applied pressures up to 150 MPa. After pressing, samples with MMA were thermally treated at 115oC. The intention was to enhance the polymerization of MMA at a temperature a little higher than the glass transition temperature (Tg = 103oC) of poly (methyl methacrylate). Green compacts with MMA had higher green density values than those without MMA. Sintered samples with MMA had lower values of sintered density and higher values of total porosity; after sintering, relative linear shrinkage was around 15 % for the whole range of applied pressures. The possibility of easily machining the green compacts with MMA produces great possibilities for application in many fields

AB - Redirecting waste biomass back into the economy can reduce their burden on the environment. The use of waste biomass for the production of fuels, value-added materials or natural fillers has significant economic and environmental benefits. Physico-chemical characterization of waste biomass (plum pomace and fig pomace) was done by proximate, elemental, biochemical analysis, FTIR and SEM analysis. The calorific value of both biomasses can be compared with the calorific value of lignite, which rises their potential use as a solid biofuel. The combustion behavior of biomass was investigated by thermal analysis techniques. Based on thermal degradation experiments performed at four heating rates a kinetic analysis of the biomass decomposition process was accomplished. The kinetic study was done using Kissinger method, Ozawa method, Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) method, Starink method, and Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose (KAS) method. The value of activation energy obtained by different kinetic methods was ∼210 kJ/mol for plum pomace and ∼162 kJ/mol for fig pomace. Estimated activation energy values were used to calculate thermodynamic parameters. In addition to the fact that the obtained results can serve as a useful reference for the design of pyrolysis reactors, this research has ecological significance because it solves the problem of solid waste disposal.

AB - In present study FEAL-LDH@SIO2 were Used for removing phosphate from aqueous solutions. FeAl-LDH with molar ratio Fe/Al = 3/1 was synthesized by co- precipitation from aqueous solutions in the present of SIO2 PARTICLES. Silica obtained from rice husks were used as a substrate for the deposition of LDH particles. The prepared material was characterized by scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms (BET method) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). XRD analysis showed that Fe-Al had formed LDH structure. SEM analysis revealed deposition of LDH particles on SIO2 SUBSTRATE. The adsorption characteristics for phosphate uptake of the obtained material were performed. Adsorption experiments were carried out as a function of LDHs dosage with three different mass ratios of LDH/silica = 1/1, 2/1, and 3/1 and different phosphate concentration AT INITIAL PH 4. Phosphate concentrations were determined using spectrophotometer. The results showed that the maximum sorption capacities of phosphates calculated based on Langmuir equation was 52.68 mg g-1.

The results showed that the maximum sorption capacities of phosphates calculated based on Langmuir equation was 52.68 mg g-1.",

AB - Diatomite (diatomaceous earth) and clay minerals deposits from the mining basin Kolubara, Serbia, are natural materials with high economic potential in many fields. As received and treated materials, diatomite and clay were characterized using X-ray diffraction, mercury intrusion porosimetry, particle size distribution, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. Activity concentrations for natural radionuclides 40K, 226Ra and 232Th and anthropogenic radionuclide 137Cs in diatomite and clay were determined by gamma spectrometry with HPGe detector. For diatomite and clay, the mean activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K were found to be 9, 26 and 173 Bq kg-1 and 19, 26 and 470 Bq kg-1, respectively. In the present study was to show that these materials are environmentally safe for further use in many fields.

AB - Organophosphate pesticides are primarily used in agriculture despite their high
neurotoxicity to humans and the environment. Malathion is used in agriculture as a means
of controlling the development of pests, but also in the protection of public health, to
control mosquitoes and lice. However, this organophosphate compound is hazardous to
human health. We used wood-waste-derived activated porous carbon material as an
adsorbent for malathion removal from water. The kinetics of the malathion adsorption
process on investigated carbon material at different temperatures was studied. The results
showed that the experimental data are a good fit with the pseudo-second-order model.
The calculated rate constants were 0.009 and 0.007 g mg−1 min−1
at 20 and 40 °C,
respectively. The equilibrium was reached after 60 minutes at both investigated
temperatures. It was shown that 1 g of the studied material could adsorb up to 186.22 mg
of malathion at 20 °C.

AB - In the synthesis of silicon nitride (Si3N4) based powders by carbothermal reduction-nitridation of diatomaceous earth, the effects of addition of silicon nitride powder on the phase composition, particle size and shape were investigated in this paper. Activated carbon was used as carbon sources. In order to obtain better quality Si3N4 powder in a faster and more efficient way, α-Si3N4 powder was introduced into starting mixtures as seeds. The starting mixtures of diatomaceous earth, carbon source and commercial α-Si3N4 powder (5,10,15 and 20 wt.%) were thermally treated at 1350 °C and 1450. X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy with Fourier transform (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were employed to characterize the phases, functional groups, microstructure of the obtained powders. The major reduction of diatomaceous earth took place at 1450 °C. At 1350 °C particles retained the morphological characteristics of the starting diatomaceous earth. At 1450 °C, observed particles possess a polygonal habitus, which is characteristic for silicon nitride crystals.

AB - The addition of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in the amount of 2 mas% in the alumina mixture improved the pressing of alumina and achieved excellent quality of machining of green compacts. The compressibility test determined the optimal pressing pressure of alumina with MMA of 60 MPa. The value of green densities was analyzed depending on applied pressure up to 150 MPa. The exceptionally smooth and shiny surface of green compact indicates good pressing of alumina with MMA. After pressing, the samples were thermally treated at 115 o C to activate the side groups of MMA polymer chains at a temperature slightly higher than the glass transition temperature (103 o C) of PMMA. This way was to improve the strength of the green compact. Compacts prepared with MMA had higher values of green density and lower values of sintered density, total and open porosity than compacts without MMA. After sintering at 1620 o C, the relative linear shrinkage was about 15% for the entire range of applied pressing pressures. The machining of the green compact enables the precise production of complicated forms of technical ceramics for the needs of many areas of the economy.

AB - Mesoporous silica renders chemical and mechanical stability under biological conditions, but due to its physicochemical properties, could be potentially harmful to exposed cells. The aim of the current study was to estimate SBA-15 (concentration of 50, 100 and 250 µg/mL) impact on human peripheral blood mononuclear cells to induce cyto- and genotoxicity in vitro after 72 h treatment, as well as lipid peroxidation in serum samples ex vivo. SBA-15 mesoporous silica treatment impact on cell viability was performed by XTT assay, lipid peroxidation was estimated by determining malondialdehyde and 4-hydroxyalkenals levels and genotoxicity by micronucleus assay. SBA-15 treatments displayed genotoxic potential at the lowest concentration, while highest tested concentration led to decrease of cell viability and increase of lipid peroxidation. Chemical modification of SBA-15 material that could influence its physicochemical properties could be useful way to lower its toxicity.

AB - Data on thermally induced transformations of Mn exchanged zeolites LTA and FAU topology are presented in this paper. Thermally induced phase transformation of Mn-exchange zeolites are followed in the range from 700 to 1300oC. Both frameworks collapse into amorphous intermediate products after heating between 600 and 650oC. Prolonged heating of the intermediate product above 1100 °C results directly in formation of a disorder Mn-anorthiteLTA and Mn-anorthiteFAU. The parameter of unit cell of Mn-anorthiteLTA and Mn-anorthiteFAU, in temperature range between 700 and 1300oC, was observed in space group C-1. The phase conversions in the temperature range investigated were followed by thermal, X-ray powder diffraction and FT-IR analyses.

AB - To obtain the titania (TiO2) nanoparticles, the conventional sol-gel method under acidic conditions, pH around 2, was employed. After synthesis, the obtained powder was calcinated at 500 and 700 °C. The X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that the heat-treated powder at 500 °C was anatase phase, while the heat-treated powder at 700 °C was the mixture of anatase and rutile phase. The crystallite size of the anatase phase at 500 °C was 15 nm whereas at 700 °C crystallite size of the anatase was 47 nm and 63 nm for the rutile phase. The characteristic FE–SEM images revealed well distributed spherical shaped nanoparticles. An average diameter of nanoparticles was in the range of 20 – 30 nm. The average size of nanoparticles in the sample treated at 500 °C was lower than the nanoparticles in the one treated at 700 °C. Therefore, the specific surface area of synthesized pure TiO2 after heat treatment at lower temperatures is higher, promising better absorption and photocatalytic activity.

AB - The synthesis of SBA-15 material with spherical particles is performed by the template method by using only a surfactant Pluronic P123 under acidic conditions. In the synthesis of SBA-15 with spherical particles, an HCl solution was used after specialised chemical treatment of clay purification. The dominant presence of the spheres with diameters up to around 2 μm was confirmed by the scanning electron microscopy(SEM) method. In contrast, the Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDS) confirmed that the spheres consisted only of SiO2 in composition. In addition to the methods mentioned above, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR) methods were used to characterise SBA- 15 materials. Application of HCl solution after chemical treatment of clay purification represents the application of technology in the synthesis of spherical SBA-15.

AB - The clay minerals deposit from the mining basin Kolubara, Serbia, is a natural sediment material with high economic potential in many fields. The chemical composition of starting clay determined by inductively coupled plasma spectrometry shows that its main composition of SiO2 is 88.00 wt.%. Organic impurities from clay have been removed by heat treatment at 600 °C for 2 h in air. After thermal treatment, an aqueous solution of HCl sedimentary mineral was chemically treated. Surface properties of starting clay and thermally and chemically treated clay (treated clay) were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and particle size distribution method. The XRD analyses of the starting and treated clay confirmed that quartz is a significant phase, followed by the appearance of feldspar and smectite clays. The SEM method showed impressively layered microstructure on various magnifications for both groups of investigated materials. The average particle diameter value for starting clay was about 23 μm and about 53 μm for treated clay. These methods showed that the starting clay changed the surface properties during thermal and chemical treatment, resulting in the merging of clay layers.
