AB - This study proposes a simple and controlled method for producing TiO2 with phase junction, oxygen vacancies, and Ti3+ by combining picosecond pulsed laser irradiation and electrochemical anodization. Ti mesh was pretreated by irradiating with a picosecond pulsed laser technique using an Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm) at two fluencies, 15 J/cm2 and 30 J/cm2 . The samples were then subjected to electrochemical anodization to form TiO2 nanotube arrays on the previously laser-treated surface. This study will investigate the possibility of forming TiO2 nanotube arrays on a pre-laser-treated Ti substrate and determine their physicochemical and photocatalytic properties. The samples were characterized by FESEM, XRD, Raman, XPS, and UV-Vis DRS. UV-Vis spectroscopy was used to observe the progress of photocatalytic degradation for all samples, and degradation products were determined using GC-MS. With the synergistic effects of phase junction, oxygen vacancies, and Ti3+, the laser-treated TiO2 with 30 J/cm2 showed a higher photocatalytic degradation rate (85.1%) of the pesticide carbofuran compared to non-laser-treated TiO2 (54.8%), remaining stable during successive degradation cycles, which has promising practical applications.

AB - Toxic elements, lead, and copper are often found in wastewater discharged from industries such as mining. The discharge of untreated effluent poses severe environmental challenges and sorption methods using agricultural waste materials are proposed as an efficient and cost-effective solution. For this research, activated sunflower material (ASM) was prepared from abundantly available agricultural sunflower waste residues and utilised to remove Pb2+ and Cu2+ ions from an aqueous medium. To begin, we examine variables that may have an impact on the adsorption process, such as pH, contact time, adsorbent dose, and initial concentration using Box-Behnken Design (BBD) to find optimal conditions. Maximum removal efficiency was found at a pH of 5, contact time of 180 min, and initial concentration of 50 mg/L for Pb2+ and 150 mg/L for Cu2+. Additionally, adsorbent dose differed by element, for Cu2+ it was 200 mg, whilst for Pb2+ it was 124 mg. Features of activated carbon such as morphology, elemental composition, textural properties, and surface functionalities were characterised using SEM-EDS, BET, FTIR, and XPS. The adsorption equilibrium data were analysed by Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm models. It was found that the obtained results for Pb2+ adsorption were better described with the Freundlich isotherm model. Maximum adsorption capacities for Pb2+ and Cu2+ were 91.8 mg/g and 20.5 mg/g, respectively. Furthermore, kinetic studies confirmed that the adsorption process followed a pseudo-first-order kinetic model for Pb2+, but for Cu2+ all applied kinetic models fitted experimental data with the same values of the correlation coefficient (R2 = 0.99). After comprehensive analysis using the methods mentioned above, ASM was tested for the removal of Cu2+ from mining wastewater sample, and the obtained removal efficiency was 98.6% ± 2.0%. The results of desorption experiments conducted, confirm that ASM has good potential to be reused for the purpose of removing Cu2+ from wastewater.

AB - The heavy metals content (HMs) was investigated in 14 different medicinal plants collected
from the three regions in Central Serbia, Zlatar, Sokobanja, and Kopaonik. The concentrations
of Cd, Cr, Ni, Hg and Pb were determined: Cd (<0.03–2.72 mg/kg); Cr (<0.08–12.1 mg/kg); Ni
(<0.08–12.2 mg/kg); Pb (0.6–49.0 mg/kg); the Hg concentration was below the detection limit of
0.06 mg/kg in all samples. The daily intake of HMs due to ingestion of 200 mL of herbal infusion
was in all cases below the recommended limit prescribed by the World Health Organization. The
estimated daily intake values were below the values for the oral reference dose regulated by the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (USA EPA). The target hazard quotient and hazard index for Cd,
Cr Ni, and Pb were below 1. Nevertheless, due to the tendency of heavy metals to accumulate in
the organism, attention should be paid to the daily intake of herbal infusion during long-term usage.
Specifically, it is recommended to consume not more than one cup (200 mL) of infusion per day made
from thyme (Mt. Zlatar) and blueberry (Mt. Kopaonik), and not more than two cups per day for
other herbs.

AB - Pulsed laser ablation in liquids (PLAL) is an approach for the direct synthesis of nanoparticles from the bulk material. In the present work, silver and gold nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized using the PLAL technique, and obtained water colloid suspensions were characterized by TEM–EDX, ICP-OES, UV–VIS, and DLS methods. On the other hand, Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) is a well-recognized and versatile analytical technique for the element analysis of solid samples. However, obtaining improved spectral intensity and detection sensitivity are still great challenging tasks, especially for an alternative and cost-effective LIBS setup based on TEA CO2 laser. Considering these demands, this work aimed to investigate a promising approach to signal enhancement based on the deposition of noble NPs on the plastic sample. The effect of NPS on the enhancement of the LIBS signal has been investigated. LIBS experiments were carried out in air at atmospheric pressure and obtained spectra with a high signal-to-background (SBR) ratio. This study shows that signal enhancement can be achieved followed by the lower limits of detection by increasing the ablation amount rate.

AB - The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of using the originally developed Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) laboratory setup for the qualitative analysis of human tooth tissues and tooth restorations. Plasma was induced by the infrared TEA (Transversally Excited Atmospheric) CO2 laser in the air under atmospheric pressure. Optical emission spectra with sharp and well-resolved spectral lines and a negligibly low background were obtained. The results of the qualitative analysis showed the presence of various elements in the tooth tissues (P, Ca, and Mg), as well as trace elements within restorations such as Zn, Sn, Cu, Ag, and Hg. The estimated temperatures of plasma for composite, dentin, and amalgam were 21,000 K, 16,200 K, and 13,300 K respectively. The electron density deduced from the Stark-broadening line profiles varies from 8.5 × 1017 cm− 3 for amalgam, 2 × 1018 cm− 3 for composite, and 1.9 × 1018 cm− 3 for dentin. The surface of the tooth tissue was imaged with a scanning electron microscope (SEM), showing that dentin contains pores, cavities and bubbles. The results indicated that the alternative and cost-effective LIBS system can be used as a useful tool for further research on laser-induced plasma in dentistry. These insights are useful in the field of laser dentistry, where lasers are commonly utilized to treat teeth. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature.

AB - Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) have been recognized for widespread biological applications due to their antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effect, especially in dentistry and for wound healing. Many features determine their beneficial or toxic potential, such as their synthesis type, size, morphology, coating, and concentration. Most synthesis types rely on the use of synthetic chemicals, which contributes to their toxicity. We present an environmentally friendly method for “green” synthesis of AgNPs from the silver target by pulsed laser ablation in liquid (PLAL) using citrate as the stabilizing agent. Since AgNPs already have many dental applications, we examined their antibacterial effect against supragingival biofilm-forming bacteria and bacterial strains known to cause resistant dental infections. Their impact on human fibroblast cells’ cytotoxicity, proliferation (measured by XTT and Ki-67 immunofluorescence), pro/antioxidant balance, and lipid peroxidation (measured by PAB and LPP) was evaluated. AgNPs1 (21 nm) and AgNPs2 (15 nm) spherical nanoparticles with good overall stability were obtained. The highest tested dose of smaller nanoparticles (AgNPs2) displays not only an effective antibacterial effect against the tested oral bacteria strains but also a pro-oxidant and cytotoxic effect on fibroblast cells. Lower doses do not affect bacterial survival but increase the cell proliferation and metabolic activity and show an antioxidative effect, suggesting that different concentrations display a substantially opposite effect. Compared to larger AgNPs1, smaller AgNPs2 possess more potent biological effects, indicating that size plays a pivotal role in their activity. Such opposite outcomes could be important for their medical application, and high concentrations could be used for the inhibition of dental biofilm formation and resistant dental infections as well as proliferative conditions, while low doses could be beneficial in the treatment of atrophic and inflammatory disorders. Finally, we showed that silver-targeted PLAL, using citrate as a stabilizing agent, produces biologically potent nanoparticles that could have many applications depending on their size and concentration.

AB - The main goal of this study was to examine the efficiency of a newly isolated fungus from quince, Aspergillus tubingensis FAT43, to produce the pectinolytic complex using agricultural and industrial waste as the substrate for solid state fermentation. Sugar beet pulp was the most effective substrate inducer of pectinolytic complex synthesis out of all the waste residues examined. For endo-pectinolytic and total pectinolytic activity, respectively, statistical optimization using Placked-Burman Design and Optimal (Custom) Design increased production by 2.22 and 2.15-fold, respectively. Liquification, clarification, and an increase in the amount of reducing sugar in fruit juices (apple, banana, apricot, orange, and quince) processed with pectinolytic complex were identified. Enzymatic pre-treatment considerably increases yield (14%–22%) and clarification (90%). After enzymatic treatment, the best liquefaction was observed in orange juice, whereas the best clarification was obtained in apricot juice. Additionally, the pectinolytic treatment of apricot juice resulted in the highest increase in reducing sugar concentration (11%) compared to all other enzymatically treated juices. Optimizing the production of a highly active pectinolytic complex and its efficient utilization in the processing of fruit juices, including the generation of an increasing amount of waste, are the significant outcomes of this research.

AB - (1) Background: An increasing use of pharmaceutics imposes a need for the permanent development of efficient strategies, including the tailoring of highly specific new materials for their removal from the environment. Photocatalytic degradation has been the subject of increasing interest of the researchers in the field. (2) Methods: This paper is focused on the investigation of the possibility to deposit a thin metal layer on a TiO2 surface and study its photocatalytic performance for the degradation of ciprofloxacin using a combination of theoretical and experimental methods. (3) Results: Based on the extensive DFT screening of 24 d-metals’ adhesion on TiO2, Cu was selected for further work, due to the satisfactory expected stability and good availability. The (Cu)TiO2 was successfully synthesized and characterized with XRD, SEM+EDS and UV-Vis spectrophotometry. The uniformly distributed copper on the TiO2 surface corresponds to the binding on high-affinity oxygen-rich sites, as proposed with DFT calculations. The photocatalytic degradation rate of ciprofloxacin was improved by about a factor of 1.5 compared to the bare non-modified TiO2. (4) Conclusions: The observed result was ascribed to the ability of adsorbed Cu to impede the agglomeration of TiO2 and increase the active catalytic area, and bandgap narrowing predicted with DFT calculations.

AB - This study investigates the application of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for analyzing the elemental composition of teeth and dental fillings. Using a CO2 laser as the excitation source, emission spectra with sharp spectral lines and low background were obtained, allowing for the identification of the elemental composition of tooth and filling tissue. Plasma parameters, including electron temperature and density, were also examined, which is important for understanding the process during LIBS analysis. The results show that the LIBS technique with a CO2 laser can provide useful information on the elemental composition of teeth and fillings, which is significant for dentistry, archaeology, and forensics [1].

AB - In this work, the screening of Aspergillus spp which produce pectinases by fermentation in a liquid medium was performed, as pectinases are effective in clarifying strawberry juice. Endo-pectinases were detected by the diffusion assay, and total pectinase activity was determined by the DNS method. The clarification of juice after pectinase treatment was determined by measuring the transmission at 660 nm, and an increase in juice yield was measured by centrifugation. The results obtained showed that these pectinases are very effective for the treatment of strawberry juice in comparison with the commercial pectinase preparation Lafase Fruit.

AB - A part of the Raša Bay (western Croatia) is an estuary that is fed by the sediment load from the Raša River. The local area
had been affected by the former Raša coal industry. The aim of this study was to determine levels of hazardous trace elements (HTEs) in bottom estuarine sediments, fish and mussels collected from two sites downstream of the Raša River
mouth, and a wild boar’s kidney donated by hunters. The pseudo-total concentrations of 21 HTEs in sediments were
obtained by the X-ray fluorescence (XRF) technique. The results showed that sediment collected closest to the former
Raša coal separation unit Štalije was enriched in V, Sr, Ni, Cu, and Pb. Concentrations of HTEs in flathead grey mullet,
wild blue mussels, and wild boar were obtained by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The results
showed that Pb, Cd and Hg in fish and wild mussels were not elevated compared to the Regulation levels of contaminants
in food. Lead and Cd in the kidney of a wild boar exceeded the prescribed maximum values for food. This study warrants
further geochemical investigations of the Raša Bay environment.

AB - Presented research aimed to develop an alternative approach for the estimation of biosorption capability of sunflower husk. The acid-pretreated sunflower biomass was characterized by scanning electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) analysis and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Biosorption efficiency has been evaluated using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). The adsorption capacity of the adsorbent was determined as the function of the pH of the solution, the initial concentration of heavy metal solutions, and contact time. The optimal conditions were achieved after 15 min of contact at pH 6, while the percentage of the removal was from 80.0–98.7 %, depending on the element. The results obtained from the kinetic and isotherm studies show that maximum adsorption of ions was quickly reached and followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Real samples were tested and obtained Ni values by LIBS method were 3100±200 and 1240±100 mg kg-1, while estimated values by the ICP-OES were 2995±20 and 1130±10 mg kg-1, respectively. The obtained results prove that LIBS method can be used as a “green alternative” for the evaluation of biosorption efficiency.

AB - Hard-tissue replacements are most commonly made from the Ti-based materials, such ascommercially pure titanium (CP-Ti) and Ti-6Al-4V (mass%) alloy, because of their exceptionalbiocompatible properties combined with the excellent corrosive and mechanical characteristics [1].More recently, efforts have been made to additionally enhance the properties of the metallicimplants through the careful selection of the alloy composition and surface modification technics[2,3]. As a result, second-generation β-type Ti alloys, containing non-toxic elements, have beendeveloped. One of the promising β-type implant alloys is Ti-13Nb-13Zr (mass%). Even though thecorrosion resistance and mechanical properties of this alloy are improved in comparison to thecommonly used metallic implant materials, its biocompatible and osseointegration properties canand must be additionally enhanced. For that purpose several surface modification technics can beused, however, laser irradiation stands out as the most promising one. Because of that scope of thepresent research was to investigate the possibility of successful surface modification of the mostcommonly used implant material, i.e. CP-Ti, and the second-generation Ti-13Nb-13Zr alloy byutilizing the easy-to-apply laser irradiation method in order to obtain improved implant tribocorrosiveproperties and enhanced biointegration and bioactivity.Laser surface modifications were conducted using the Nd:YAG system in the air and argonatmosphere under different laser output energies. Implant materials surface morphologies after thelaser irradiation treatment were investigated using the field-emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM) and optical profilometry, while the impact of the laser irradiation on the implantmaterials surface characteristics were examined using the energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS)and microhardness measurements.Conducted research showed that utilization of the Nd:YAG laser irradiation resulted in significantalterations of the CP-Ti and Ti-13Nb-13Zr alloy surface chemistry, morphology and microhardness.Laser irradiation of both investigated materials led to the formation of visible microcracks andhydrodynamic effects in the central part of the irradiated area, while traces of melted and solidifiedmaterial were observed at its periphery. More pronounced morphological changes were inducedduring the laser irradiation in an argon atmosphere, while a higher degree of texturing was recordedat the surface of the Ti-13Nb-13Zr alloy. At the irradiated surfaces, the formation of the oxide layer, predominantly composed of Ti-oxide particles, was detected. Surface oxides are desirable sincetheir presence can improve the implant material bioactivity with a simultaneous increase of thetribo-corrosive properties through the formation of the hard corrosion resistance surface film. Laserinducedchemical and morphological alterations were more distinctive in the case of the Ti-13Nb-13Zr alloy.

abstract = "Hard-tissue replacements are most commonly made from the Ti-based materials, such ascommercially pure titanium (CP-Ti) and Ti-6Al-4V (mass%) alloy, because of their exceptionalbiocompatible properties combined with the excellent corrosive and mechanical characteristics [1].More recently, efforts have been made to additionally enhance the properties of the metallicimplants through the careful selection of the alloy composition and surface modification technics[2,3]. AB - Titanium alloys are finding increasing use as biomaterials due to their low elastic modulus and high damage tolerance. However, the somewhat inadequate alloy surface performance can impede their biomedical application. Surface modification methods have been therefore developed to improve the alloys' surface bioactivity and osseointegration. Laser treatment allows the alloy surface to be modified, providing it with new functionalized surface chemistry and morphology, without compromising the rest of the material properties. Thus, the aim of the study was to examine the laser-induced alterations generated on the Ti-45Nb alloy surface by an ultrashort pulsed laser. The obtained results reveal that laser beam interaction with the target material led to the formation of significant alterations in surface morphology. Surface craters, microcracks, and surface features in the form of periodic and rippled structures and solidified droplets can be observed in the irradiated area. Also, it was found that the higher damage degree along with the material depth and the higher surface roughness were achieved during the irradiation in the argon atmosphere due to the formation of the more pronounced morphological changes on the alloy surface that are induced by higher laser ablation. Furthermore, obtained results showed that alloy surface modification in air, argon, and nitrogen atmosphere additionally caused changes in the surface chemical composition. Namely, after irradiation, the presence of oxygen was observed in the central irradiated area indicating the formation of bioactive Ti-oxide surface film with content that varies with the irradiation parameters variation. Therefore, laser beam irradiation can be singled out as the surface modification method for efficient inducement of the specific surface characteristics that can provide titanium alloys with enhanced osseointegration properties.

AB - Laser ablation synthesis in liquid solution (PLAL) is a green technique that allows for the physical formation of ultrapure nanomaterials. In this work, Ag and Au nanoparticles are synthesized by PLAL using two different neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser systems. A pure silver/gold target (99.998% purity) was immersed in Milli-Q water and the sample surface of approximately 1 cm2 in size was continually scanned by a pulsed laser beam to achieve a homogenous ablation. Obtained suspensions were analyzed by ICP-OES, UV-Vis, TEM, and DLS. UV-Vis spectra showed characteristic peaks at 428 nm and 525 nm, which correlate with silver and gold nanoparticles' surface plasmon absorbance. ICP-OES analysis confirmed that these suspensions are free from impurities. Since no stabilizer is added, these nanoparticles tend to agglomerate in time, as TEM and DLS analysis confirmed (Figure 1). Nevertheless, these nanoparticles can be easily functionalized with a variety of ligands such as small molecules, surfactants, dendrimers, polymers, and biomolecules to get desirable functionalities for various applications.

AB - The interaction of lasers with metals has been studied for decades, and has been especially intensified lately, due to the development of new, efficient pulsed lasers. Titanium has a number of excellent properties, making it applicable in various modern technologies. Treatment and processing of titanium is possible with various techniques, and the application of lasers gives a special quality, such as high precision machining or obtaining specific structures on the surface which cannot be generated by other methods. During our research, surface processing of titanium was conducted by various pulsed lasers: nanosecond CO2 laser, picosecond Nd:YAG laser and femtosecond Ti: sapphire laser. In order to find the optimal conditions for surface modification of titanium, the influence of different laser parameters (wavelength, pulse duration, pulse energy, etc.), as well as the influence of the ambient, was examined. The titanium samples were irradiated in different environments, ie. in air, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, helium and in vacuum, which affected the chemical composition and morphology of the target surface.

AB - The industrial wastewater produced from various industries contains a significant amount of pollutants among which are heavy metals and represents one of the leading environmental problems facing public health. Conventional wastewater treatment technologies unsuccessfully remove heavy metals completely. As an alternative to various conventional treatment technologies such as ion exchange, chemical precipitation, and electrochemical treatment which have a lot of drawbacks, biosorption is a process characterized by the use of low-cost and abundant agricultural materials with no significant costs and high sorption potentials of biosorbent due to the presence of carboxylic and phenolic groups in lignocellulose matrix. In Serbia, sunflower is the most common oil plant and grows on about 180 000 ha. After industrial processing between 325, 000 and 360, 000 t of sunflower waste ends up in landfills or is used as a source of energy (1). In this work, the sunflower husk was used to remove Ni from aqueous solutions and wastewater sample. The sunflower husk treated with 1% hydrochloric acid was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX). In addition, under optimal conditions, the concentration of Ni in wastewater samplewas obtained and compared by two techniques, induced coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) as a standard reference method and laser-induced plasma spectroscopy (LIBS) as a non-standard analytical method. The results of these two methods were compared, to investigate the possibility of using laser-induced plasma spectroscopy as a green alternative for the evaluation of biosorption efficiency.

AB - In this paper, the possible use of ZnO nanoparticles for photocatalytic degradation of dyes, in particular bromocresol green and commercial textile dyes, was examined. А water suspension of ZnO nanoparticles was prepared by laser ablation. Concentration of nanoparticles was measured by ICP-OES technique. Dyes solutions with different amounts of nanoparticles were exposed to UVC irradiation at 5 minute intervals for a total period of 1 hour. Degradation of dyes during irradiation was determined by UV-VIS spectroscopy by measuring solution absorbance before, during, and after exposition. Preliminary results confirmed the initial assumption that laser synthesized nanoparticles could be used for dye degradation.

AB - In this work, the sunflower husk was used to evaluate the removal efficiency of heavy metals from an aqueous solution. Firstly, the condition for maximum adsorption of heavy metals is optimized as a function of pH and contact time. Тhereafter, the removal efficiency of Ni from the industrial wastewater by the usage of the sunflower husk as a biosorbent was evaluated by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), and by the standard spectrochemical ICP-OES method. The values obtained by these two methods were compared and the results are within the uncertainty of the LIBS method.

AB - In the past two decades, with recent advances in laser technology, Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) has become a more and more popular analytical method for the analysis of any type of samples. Some exclusive properties such as rapid, multi-element analysis of any kind of material, non-contact and almost non-destructive, independent of sample conductivity, geometry and size make this method superior to the other standard optical emission techniques. In this work, we will demonstrate the possibility of using a cost-effective alternative to commercial LIBS systems, the TEA CO2 laser-based LIBS setup for analysis of environmental-related samples: for direct analysis of solid samples and indirect analysis of liquid samples. Finally, our developed method doesn’t use any hazardous reagents and solvents and maximizes safety for operators and the environment, which creates it in full accordance with the principles of green analytical chemistry.

AB - This paper evaluates the possibilities of the original LIBS (Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopes) laboratory setup for the elementary analysis of human tooth tissues and tooth restorations. For that reason, samples of the teeth restored with amalgam and composite fillings were analyzed. In addition, the possibility of heavy metal diffusion from restoring materials into healthy tooth tissues was also examined. Plasma was induced by the TEA CO2 laser in the air under atmospheric pressure. Optical emission spectra with sharp and well-decomposed spectral lines and a negligibly low background were obtained. The results of the elemental analysis showed the presence of various trace elements in the tooth tissues (P, Ca, Mg) as well as within restorations such as Zn, Cu, Ag, Hg. The analysis also showed that cement successfully blocked diffusion from restoring materials (amalgam and composite) into the dentine below. Obtained preliminary results led to the conclusion that this alternative and cost-effective LIBS system can find application as a useful tool for further research on laser-induced plasma in dentistry
