AB - In the 1999 bombing of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, NATO forces used ammunition containing depleted uranium. The cleaning of depleted uranium that followed was performed in southern Serbia by the Vinca Institute of Nuclear Sciences between 2002 and 2007 at the locations of Pljackovica, Borovac, Bratoselce, and Reljan. This paper presents detailed results of radioactivity monitoring four years after cleaning (2011), which included the determination of gamma emitters in soil, water, and plant samples, as well as gross alpha and beta activities in water samples. The gamma spectrometry results showed the presence of natural radionuclides Ra-226, Th-232, K-40, U-235, U-238, and the produced radionuclide Cs-137 (from the Chernobyl accident). In order to evaluate the radiological hazard from soil, the radium equivalent activity, the gamma dose rate, the external hazard index, and the annual effective dose were calculated. Considering that a significant number of people inhabit the studied locations, the periodical monitoring of radionuclide content is vital.

AB - As optical fibres are used ever more extensively in space applications, nuclear industry, medicine and high-energy physics experiments, it has become essential to investigate the influence of ionizing radiation on their characteristics. In this work, the radiation-induced attenuation at 530 nm is investigated experimentally in step-index multimode polymethyl-methacrylate plastic optical fibres exposed to low dose-rate gamma radiation. Cumulative doses ranged from 50 Gy to 500 Gy. The radiation induced attenuation has been empirically found to obey the power law RIA = aD(b), where D is the total radiation dose and a and b are the constants determined by fitting.

AB - In this work, we present the experimental study of the radiation-induced attenuation in step-index polymethyl-methacrylate based plastic optical fibre by exposure to low dose rate ionizing radiation. The low dose exposure has been found to induce significant permanent attenuation in plastic optical fibres. Based on the experimental results, the formula between radiation-induced attenuation and radiation dose is obtained accordingly. The recovery properties of plastic optical fibre also were investigated. The fibre begins to recover immediately after irradiation, but it does not fully recover, i.e. the irradiation leads to permanent damage of polymer. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - Investigation of Al-gate p-channel MOSFETs sensitivity following irradiation using 200 and 280 kV X-ray beams as well as gamma-ray irradiation of Co-60 in the dose range from 1 to 5 Gy was performed in this paper. The response followed on the basis of threshold voltage shift and was studied as a function of absorbed dose. It was shown that the most significant change in threshold voltage was in the case of MOSFET irradiation in X-ray fields of 200 kV and when the gate voltage was +5V. For practical applications in dosimetry, the sensitivity of the investigated MOSFETs was also satisfactory for X-ray tube voltage of 280 kV and for gamma rays. Possible processes in gate oxide caused by radiation and its impact on the response of MOSFETs were also analyzed in this paper.

AB - N-type thin film transistors (TFTs) fabricated with fluorinated and hydrogenated polysilicon were exposed to gamma radiation to a cumulative dose up to 1200 Gy(Si). During irradiation, the gate electrode was biased with a positive voltage up to 4.8 V. The effect of irradiation on the electrical characteristics of the devices was monitored after the irradiation steps and in a prolonged period after irradiation. The main monitoring parameter was the threshold voltage which was found to have linear dependence on irradiation dose. This, together with obtained low fading, suggests that thin transistors have potential as radiation dosimeters.

AB - The paper presents major sources of population exposure to ionizing radiation and the magnitude and distribution among various sources. Natural radiation sources are part of human environment. Due to external exposure from space radiation, external exposure from terrestrial radiation, internal exposure from inhalation of radon and thoron and their progeny and due to internal exposure from radionuclides in the body, as a global average, the natural background radiation is 2.4 mSv per year. Apart from natural radiation, nuclear and isotopic techniques represent a wide range of human activities, and for more than a century have very important applications in various areas of life. A brief overview of these methods used in agriculture, industry, science and research, archaeology, history and medicine and their radiation impact will be provided. Parallel to expansion of radiation application, the concerns related to health effects of ionizing radiation have been raised. The scientific discipline called radiation protection has an aim to protect people and environment form excessive and unnecessary exposure to ionizing radiation. There are three basic principles in radiation protection: justification, optimisation of protection and individual dose limitations, and overview of these will be given in the paper.

abstract = "The paper presents major sources of population exposure to ionizing radiation and the magnitude and distribution among various sources. There are three basic principles in radiation protection: justification, optimisation of protection and individual dose limitations, and overview of these will be given in the paper.",

AB - The fiber optics technology is constantly being developed, and is becoming an essential component of contemporary communications, medicine and industry. Fibers, their connections and system components play a major role in optical signal transmission, telecommunications, power transmission, and sensing processes using fiber technology. The two main light propagation characteristics of an optical fiber are attenuation and dispersion. The possibility of controling these parameters is of utmost importance for obtaining the requested transmission quality. This paper reports on an investigation to determine the influence of gamma radiation of Co-60 on the variation of optical fiber propagation parameters, such as polarization mode dispersion. In addition, it also considers chosen topics in the field of fiber optics technology.

AB - When high-energy photon beams are used for irradiation in radiotherapy, neutrons that are the result of photonuclear reactions create activation products that affect the occupational dose of radiotherapy staff. For the assessment of activation products in situ gamma spectroscopy was performed parallel to dose-rate measurements following irradiation, by using a high-energy photon beam from a linear accelerator Elekta Precise (Elekta, Stockholm, Sweden) used in radiotherapy. The major identified activation products were the following radioisotopes: (28)Al, (24)Na, (56)Mn, (54)Mn, (187)W, (64)Cu and (62)Cu. Based on the typical workload and dose-rate measurement, the assessed additional annual occupational dose ranged from 1.7 to 0.25 mSv. As the measured dose rate arising from the activation products rapidly decreases as a function of time, the assessed additional dose is negligible after 10 min following irradiation. To keep the occupational dose as low as reasonably achievable, it is recommended to delay entrance to the therapy room at least 2-4 min, when high-energy photons are used. This would reduce the effective dose by 30 %.

AB - The influence of nuclear radiation and particles has been the object of investigation for a long time. For new materials and systems the research should be continued. Human activities in various environments, including space, call for more detailed research. The role of fibers in contemporary communications, medicine, and industry increases. Fibers, their connections and fused optics components have one type of tasks - the transmission of information and power. The other type of tasks is reserved for fiber lasers: quantum generators and amplifiers. The third type of tasks is for fiber sensors, including high energy nuclear physics. In this paper we present some chosen topics in the mentioned areas as well as our experiments with nuclear radiation and laser beams to fiber and bulk materials of various nature (glass, polymer, metallic, etc.).

AB - The paper deals with the results of the investigations of indoor radon measurements in more than 300 rural and urban dwellings in Kosovo and Metohija. All measurements were carried out using CR-39 solid State nuclear track detectors by similar protocols and within two series in 1990-s and in 2000-s, in 34 settlements divided by 9 regions, thus covering significant part of Kosovo. For most of measured points the adjustment for seasonal variation was necessary and had been conducted. Highest average values of indoor radon concentrations were found in rural settlements of Lipljan and Vitina regions, 512 and 452 Bq/m(3), respectively. Combined analysis allows indoor radon concentration of 220 Bq/m(3) to be suggested as representative estimate for Kosovo, while additional data appear. Observed pattern of indoor radon seasonal variation and difference of radon levels between ground and upper floors suggest soil radon as primary source of indoor radon and significance of convection type radon entry. AB - The RADFETs (pMOS dosimeters) were irradiated by ionizing radiation from Co-60 gamma-ray source to dose of 230 Gy(Si) without gate bias, and their reproducibility and sensitivity to radiation were investigated. The completely automatic system containing switching matrix have been used, enabling very reliable measurements of RADFET electrical characteristics. Two sample types from each RADFET chip, with the same gate oxide thickness, but different geometry (channel width and length), were investigated. The samples have shown good reproducibility of the threshold voltage shift during irradiation, i.e., the radiation sensitivity was similar for all samples. Using MG and CP techniques, it has been shown that the slow switching (border) trap density is negligible, but the fixed trap density saturates and the fast switching trap density is linear. AB - The primary objective of this study is to investigate the actual mammography dose levels in Serbia and establish a baseline dose database for the future screening programme. The mean glandular dose (MGD) was assessed for standard size breast substituted by 45 mm polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) phantom and imaged under typical clinical conditions at 30 screen-film mammography facilities. Average MGD was (1.9 +/- 1.0) mGy, with a range of 0.12-5.2 mGy. These results were used for the calculation of the initial diagnostic reference levels in mammography in Serbia, which was set to 2.1 mGy for a standard breast. At some facilities, high doses were observed and the assessed MGD was supplemented by a patient dose survey. MGD was measured for 53 women having a diagnostic mammography in cranio-caudal (CC) and mediolateral oblique (MLO) projections at the largest mammography facilities in Serbia. The parameters recorded were: age, compressed breast thickness, tube potential (in kV), tube loading (in mAs) and the MLO projection angle. The average MGD per image was 2.8 mGy for the CC projection and 4.3 mGy for the MW projection. Dose to breast was compared with dose for PMMA phantoms of various sizes, assessed at the same facilities. The results have indicated that phantom dose values can assist in setting optimisation activities in mammography. Both phantom and patient dose values indicated unnecessary high doses in facilities with an extremely high mammography workload. For these facilities, urgent dose-reduction measures and follow-up actions were recommended.

AB - An overview of radiological incident involving radiation source from a lightning rod ((152)Eu/(154)Eu), together with dose estimation for individuals exposed to ionising radiation is given in the paper. The cause of the incident was an orphaned source from a lightning rod. The dose received by individuals was assessed using a retrospective dosimetry technique, based on the information on behaviour of individuals and results of dose rate measurements in the vicinity of the source. Several people have been exposed to relatively high dose rates for an extended period of time. The conservatively estimated cumulative dose values for two categories of individuals were 50 and 40 mSv, respectively, which are significantly higher than annual dose limit for public exposure of 1 mSv. The need to identify radioactive sources incorporated in radioactive lightning rods, to maintain control and accountability and to remove and dispose of them properly along with appropriate record keeping in Serbia was highlighted. These activities would reduce the probability of occurrence of radiation incidents in Serbia.

AB - Titanium alloys have found numerous applications in space research, and nuclear industry and research. Since X-rays constitute an important part of the space radiation environment, numerical simulations of radiation absorption characteristics of titanium alloys were studied in this paper. The photon transport Monte Carlo software was used for determining the energy deposited in titanium samples. The numerical results show the pronounced dependence of radiation absorption properties of different combinations of components in alloy. The results obtained are encouraging in respect of optimization of structure of alloys regarding their required features in radiation shielding.

AB - Radiation sensing MOSFETs (RADFETs) have found numerous applications in space research, as well as in nuclear technology and research, and radiotherapy. Since proton irradiation is an essential part of the space radiation environment, it is important to know RADFET proton response precisely. In this work a numerical simulation of RADFET proton response is performed. To this end the proton transport Monte Carlo software SRNA-2K5, developed by one of the authors, has been adapted to obtain the energy deposited in the RADFET structure and dose distribution within the microscopic dimensions of the dosimeter sensitive volume. Our results show that RADFET response to proton irradiation depends significantly of packaging configurations with kovar lid.

AB - It is well known that medical linear accelerators generate activation products when operated above certain electron (photon) energies. The aim of the present work is to assess the activation behavior of a medium-energy radiotherapy linear accelerator by applying in situ gamma-ray spectrometry and dose measurements, and to estimate the additional dose to radiotherapy staff on the basis of these results. Spectral analysis was performed parallel to dose rate measurements in the isocenter of the linear accelerator, immediately after the termination of irradiation. The following radioisotopes were detected by spectral analysis: (28)Al, (62)Cu, (56)Mn, (64)Cu, (187)W, and (57)Ni. The short-lived isotopes such as (28)Al and (62)Cu are the most important factors of the clinical routine, while the contribution to the radiation dose of medium-lived isotopes such as (56)Mn, (57)Ni, (64)Cu, and (187)W increases during the working day. Measured dose rates at the isocenter ranged from 2.2 mu Sv/h to 10 mu Sv/h in various measuring points of interest for the members of the radiotherapy staff. Within the period of 10 minutes, the dose rate decreased to values of 0.8 mu Sv/h. According to actual workloads in radiotherapy departments, a realistic exposure scenario was set, resulting in a maximal additional annual whole body dose to the radiotherapy staff of about 3.5 mSv.

AB - X-rays are by far most significant contributor to total population dose from man-made sources of radiation. Diagnostic reference levels provide frameworks to reduce variability. The aim of this study is to establish, for the first time, a baseline for national diagnostic reference levels in Serbia for the most common X-ray examination types. Dose estimates are based on measurements of kerma-area product and Entrance surface air kerma for at least ten patients for each examination type, in each of 16 randomly selected hospitals in Serbia. Mean, median and third quartile values of patient doses are reported. Results have shown wide variation of mean hospital doses. Entrance surface doses were compared with previously published diagnostic reference levels. Doses for all studied examination types except chest radiography were within European DRL. The reasons for dose variation are discussed. The findings emphasize the importance of regular patient dose measurement to ensure that patient doses are kept as low as reasonable achievable.

AB - CdZnTe detectors have been employed in diagnostic X-ray spectroscopy. This paper presents the Monte Carlo calculation of X-ray deposited energy in a CdZnTe detector for different energies of photon beam. In incident photon direction, the distribution of absorbed dose as deposited energy in detector is determined, Based on the dependence of the detector response on the thickness and different Zn fractions, some conclusions about changes of the material characteristics could be drawn. Results of numerical simulation suggest that the CdZnTe detector could be suitable for X-ray low energy.

AB - The adequate choice of different target materials for X-ray generators is a very important subject of engineers practice and research. In the present work we analyze theoretically the transport of electrons through the anode material and the production of the corresponding bremsstrahlung radiation. In our analysis we simulate the particle transport with the help of the FOTELP code, which is based on the Monte Carlo simulation. Our main aim is to develop an efficient and handy method, which could be helpful in improving the design of the X-ray tube components and in reducing of the patient dose, while keeping the image quality. The obtained results are encouraging.

AB - Diagnostic reference levels provide framework to reduce variability. The aim of this study is to establish, for the first time, a baseline for national diagnostic reference levels in Serbia and Montenegro for the most common X-ray examination types. Measurements of patient dose using kerma-area product meter and entrance surface air kerma assessment were performed on at least ten patients for each examination type, in each of 16 randomly selected hospitals in Serbia and Montenegro, so that a total of 3,026 procedures for nine different examination categories were included in the survey. Exposure settings and individual data were recorded for each patient. Mean, median and third quartile values of patient doses are reported. Results have shown wide variation of mean hospital doses, with a factor of four for barium enema to 23 for thoracic spine radiography. Entrance surface air kerma were compared with previously published diagnostic reference levels (DRL) proposed by Commission of European Communities (CEC). Doses for all studied examination types except chest radiography were within European DRL. The reasons for dose variation are discussed. Survey data are aimed to help in development of an on-going national quality assurance and quality control programme in diagnostic radiology. The findings emphasize the importance of regular patient dose measurement to ensure that patient doses are kept as low as reasonable achievable.

AB - Cape Arza was contaminated with depleted uranium (DU) in the air strikes of NATO aeroplanes on May 30,1999. The cleanup and decontamination of the site started in 2001. Here the results of air monitoring performed during the cleanup operations in Spring 2002. are presented. The collected air samples were analyzed by high-resolution alpha spectrometry. The obtained concentrations of airborne uranium are about ten times higher than the average value usually reported for air. The ratio of the U-234/U-238 activities indicates the presence of depleted uranium in the air during the cleanup action, due to resuspension and soil disturbance in the contaminated teritory.
