AB - Environmental pollution is increasing day by day due to industrial activities. Heavy metals are pollutants of special concern due to their toxicity, persistence, and bioaccumulation in nature. Nickel is a heavy metal that is mostly used in industries because of its anticorrosion behavior. As a consequence, nickel ions are present in the wastewater from mining, electroplating, battery manufacturing and metal finishing industries. Nickel ions are nonbiodegradable, and as such, they are present in surface water. Their high concentrations can have a dangerous impact on human health and aquatic life. In this work, a promising method for the removal of Ni ions from wastewater and their incorporation into a stable crystal structure was described. Ni-exchanged form of LTA zeolite was prepared by the standard procedure of ion exchange. After the ion exchange, powder samples were heated at temperatures of 900 to 1300 ºC in order to obtain a stable crystal structure of Ni-spinel, NiAl2O4. XRF analysis was used to study ion exchange efficiency. Characterization of raw as well as thermally treated powder samples of Ni-exchanged LTA zeolite was conducted by XRPD, DTA/TG, FT-IR and SEM analysis

AB - Presented research aimed to develop an alternative approach for the estimation of biosorption capability of sunflower husk. The acid-pretreated sunflower biomass was characterized by scanning electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX) analysis and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Biosorption efficiency has been evaluated using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). The adsorption capacity of the adsorbent was determined as the function of the pH of the solution, the initial concentration of heavy metal solutions, and contact time. The optimal conditions were achieved after 15 min of contact at pH 6, while the percentage of the removal was from 80.0–98.7 %, depending on the element. The results obtained from the kinetic and isotherm studies show that maximum adsorption of ions was quickly reached and followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Real samples were tested and obtained Ni values by LIBS method were 3100±200 and 1240±100 mg kg-1, while estimated values by the ICP-OES were 2995±20 and 1130±10 mg kg-1, respectively. The obtained results prove that LIBS method can be used as a “green alternative” for the evaluation of biosorption efficiency.

AB - In this work, the sunflower husk was used to evaluate the removal efficiency of heavy metals from an aqueous solution. Firstly, the condition for maximum adsorption of heavy metals is optimized as a function of pH and contact time. Тhereafter, the removal efficiency of Ni from the industrial wastewater by the usage of the sunflower husk as a biosorbent was evaluated by laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), and by the standard spectrochemical ICP-OES method. The values obtained by these two methods were compared and the results are within the uncertainty of the LIBS method.

AB - As soil cadmium (Cd) contamination becomes a serious concern and one of the significant environmental pollution issues all over the world, knowledge of the basic chemistry, origin, inputs, sources, quantity, chemical forms, reactions, as well as the fate and transport of Cd in different types of soil is crucial for better understanding Cd bioavailability, health risks and remedial options. This study aimed to increase the current knowledge on the complex interdependence between the factors affecting behavior, transport and fate of Cd in the soil and to test and compare the performance of the stabilization agents in different soil types. Soils demonstrated various sorption affinity and capacity for Cd accumulation, which proved to be positively correlated with soil pH and the cation exchange capacity (CEC). With increasing levels of contamination, sequential extraction analysis showed the highest increase of relative Cd amounts in the exchangeable fraction regardless of the soil properties, suggesting that added Cd is principally associated with the easily accessible and mobile fraction. For different initial Cd concentrations and soil types, Cd sorption reached the quasi-equilibrium within 24 h of contact. Prolonged aging (two months) influenced the natural stabilization of Cd in all types of soil, but only at low contamination level. The application of both, conventional (slaked lime Ca(OH) 2 ) and alternative phosphate-rich (annealed bovine bones B 400 ) amendments, resulted in Cd relocation and reduction of exchangeable Cd content. Although the effect was smaller when apatite amendment was utilized, observed re-distribution of Cd to more stable soil fractions is preferable for achieving long-term stabilization. Cd concentrations extracted in exchangeable and acid soluble fractions after the treatments of contaminated soil samples suggest that the practical applicability of in situ immobilization depends on the soil properties and the level of contamination, as well as that effect, should be monitored for the possible re-mobilization of Cd. © 2019 Elsevier Inc.

AB - The objective of the present study was to determine the impact of cadmium (Cd) concentration in the soil on its uptake by tobacco plants, and to compare the ability of diverse extraction procedures for determining Cd bioavailability and predicting soil-to-plant transfer and Cd plant concentrations. The pseudo-total digestion procedure, modified Tessier sequential extraction and six standard single-extraction tests for estimation of metal mobility and bioavailability were used for the leaching of Cd from a native soil, as well as samples artificially contaminated over a wide range of Cd concentrations. The results of various leaching tests were compared between each other, as well as with the amounts of Cd taken up by tobacco plants in pot experiments. In the native soil sample, most of the Cd was found in fractions not readily available under natural conditions, but with increasing pollution level, Cd amounts in readily available forms increased. With increasing concentrations of Cd in the soil, the quantity of pollutant taken up in tobacco also increased, while the transfer factor (TF) decreased. Linear and non-linear empirical models were developed for predicting the uptake of Cd by tobacco plants based on the results of selected leaching tests. The non-linear equations for ISO 14870 (diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid extraction - DTPA), ISO/TS 21268-2 (CaCl2 leaching procedure), US EPA 1311 (toxicity characteristic leaching procedure - TCLP) single step extractions, and the sum of the first two fractions of the sequential extraction, exhibited the best correlation with the experimentally determined concentrations of Cd in plants over the entire range of pollutant concentrations. This approach can improve and facilitate the assessment of human exposure to Cd by tobacco smoking, but may also have wider applicability in predicting soil-to-plant transfer.

AB - For the preparation of fully biobased unsaturated polyester resins (UPRs), the replacement of styrene with alternate nonpetroleum-based monomers turned out to be one of the most challenging tasks. Its complexity lies in the fact that reactive diluents (RD) have to have low viscosity and volatility, good compatibility with prepolymer, and capability to homopolymerize and copolymerize with its unsaturations. In this context, we directed our efforts to develop fully biobased UPRs using the dialkyl itaconates as an alternative to styrene. Therefore, a series of 100% biobased UPRs were prepared from itaconic acid and 1,2-propandiol and diluted by dialkyl itaconates. The resins were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, NMR, volatility, and viscosity measurements, while the cured samples were characterized by dynamic mechanical properties, thermomechanical analysis, thermogravimetric analysis data, and tensile tests. The influence of RD structure on the properties of cured samples was discussed in detail. It was shown that the prepared resins had evaporation rates of dialkyl itaconates of several orders of magnitude less compared to styrene. The cured resins with dimethyl itaconate showed comparable or even better thermal and mechanical properties compared to the one with styrene. This investigation showed that itaconic acid and dialkyl itaconates are promising bioresources for the preparation of fully biobased UPRs for mass consumption.

AB - The distribution of elements in soil fractions affects their mobility and availability and thus their potential beneficial or harmful impact on ecosystems, biota and humans. Different mineralogical and chemical characteristics of soil influence elemental distribution. In the present study, chemical speciation of macro and micro elements (Al, Fe, Mn, K, Cd, Cr, Cu, Li, Ba, Ni, Pb and Zn) in unpolluted soils of different types, collected from the territory of the Republic of Serbia, were analysed by sequential extraction procedure. The impact of the physicochemical soil properties on the content, distribution, mobility and availability of elements was investigated. Principal component analysis was employed for the evaluation and characterization of the experimental data, understanding of the relationships between soil properties and the distribution, affiliation and connection of the elements. Finally, an artificial neural network (ANN) model was developed to explore the applicability of this approach for the prediction of the elemental distribution based on soil properties. Good agreement between the model and the experimental results implied that the ANN could be considered as a useful tool for control and prediction purposes. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. AB - In this paper, macroporous glycidyl methacrylate and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate copolymer functionalized with diethylene triamine (PGME-deta), was evaluated as Reactive Black 5 (RB5) sorbent. Batch RB5 removal from aqueous solution by PGME-deta was investigated by varying pH, contact time, sorbent dosage, initial dye concentration and temperature. The sorption is pH sensitive having maximum at pH 2 (dye removal of 85%), decreasing with the increase of pH (dye removal of 24% at pH 11) after 60 min. Sorption kinetics was fitted to chemical-reaction and particle-diffusion models (pseudo-first-, pseudo-second-order, intraparticle diffusion and Mckay models). The pseudo-second-order kinetic model accurately predicted the RB5 amount sorbed under all investigated operating conditions, while the intraparticle diffusion was the dominant rate-limiting mechanism. The diffusion mechanism was more prevalent with the decrease in temperature and the increase in concentration. The isotherm data was best fitted with the Langmuir model, indicating homogeneous distribution of active sites on PGME-deta and monolayer sorption, with the maximum sorption capacity of 353 mg g(-1). The calculated sorption rates improved with increasing temperature and an activation energy close to 40 kj mol(-1) was determined, suggesting that chemisorption was also rate-controlling.

AB - If the model of the photoacoustic (PA) response of an investigated system contains many unknown parameters, as is the case with multilayered samples, then the inverse procedure for the calculation of the parameters is highly sensitive to experimental noise. The problem cannot be solved by developing the experimental setup or by data acquisition methods, but only by an improvement of the theoretical approach. This paper presents an analysis of the applicability of the effective medium approximation to the PA response of multilayered samples. It has been shown that the theory is not applicable to the general case, and explicit expressions for the effective values of thermal diffusivity and heat propagation speed have been derived for some special cases.

AB - An interpretative strategy (factorial design experimentation + total resolution analysis + chromatogram simulation) was employed to optimize the separation of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) (naphthalene, acenaphthylene, acenaphthene, fluorene, phenanthrene, anthracene, fluoranthene, pyrene, chrysene, benzo(a)anthracene, benzo(k)fluoranthene, benzo(b)fluoranthene, benzo(a)pyrene, indeno(1,2,3-c,d)pyrene, dibenzo(a,h)anthracene, benzo(g,h,i)perylene) in temperature-programmed gas chromatography (GC). Also, the retention behavior of PAHs in the same GC system was studied by a feed-forward artificial neural network (ANN). GC separation was investigated as a function of one (linear temperature ramp) or two (linear temperature ramp+the final hold temperature) variables. The applied interpretative approach resulted in rather good agreement between the measured and the predicted retention times for PAHs in both one and two variable modeling. The ANN model, strongly affected by the number of input experiments, was shown to be less effective for one variable used, but quite successful when two input variables were used. All PAHs, including difficult to separate peak pairs (benzo(k)fluoranthene/benzo(b)fluoranthene and indeno(1,2,3-c,d)pyrene/dibenzo(a,h)anthracene), were separated in a standard (5% phenyl-95% climethylpolysiloxane) capillary column at an optimum temperature ramp of 8.0 degrees C/min and final hold temperature in the range of 260-320 degrees C. AB - The concentrations of Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, K, Ca, Mg, Al, Ba and B in 26 herbal drugs of special importance in phytopharmacywere studied. Flame atomic absorption and emission spectrometry (FAAS, FAES), as well as inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), were applied in this work. The whole procedure, from sample preparation, via dissolution, to measurements, was validated by using CRM (NIST 1573a-tomato leaves), and the obtained recovery values are in the range from 91 to 102%. Drug samples originated from medicinal plants cultivated in Serbia contained Cu (4.47-14.08 mg kg(-1)), Zn (8.4-54.5 mg kg(-1)), Mn (9-155 mg kg(-1)), Fe (47-546 mg kg(-1)), K (0.20-6.24%), Ca (0.18-1.84%), Mg (0.13-1.09%), Al (16-416 mg kg(-1)), Ba (11.70-84.83 mg kg(-1)) and B (5.1-118.7 mg kg(-1)). In order to get a better insight into the elemental patterns, a common chemometric approach to data evaluation was used. Four significant factors identified by principal component analysis (PCA) were attributed partly to the significant influential sources and high mobility of some elements thus referring to potential anthropogenic contamination as well. AB - Elemental profiles of the total analyte content of major, minor and trace elements (Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe, K, Ca, Mg, Al, Ba and 13) in 8 herbal drugs, originating from medicinal plants of the family Lamiacae, were determined. Flame atomic absorption/emission spectroscopy (FAAS/FAES), inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) and energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) were applied, and the advantages and limitations of these techniques are also discussed. The whole procedure, from sample preparation via dissolution to the actual measurements, was validated byusing CRM (NIST 1573a-Tomato leaves). The recovery values obtained were in the range 90.64 - 101.58%. A high degree of similarity in their elemental profiles was noticed from the results of qualitative analysis, while quantitative analysis shows significant diversity due to the variety of the influencing sources. The medicinal plants investigated in this work contained Cu (5.92 - 14.79 mg kg(-1)), Zn (15.0 - 43.0 mg kg(-1)), Mn (25 - 111 mg kg(-1)), Fe (74 - 546 mg kg(-1)), K (1.80 - 6.24 %), Ca (0.90 - 1.43 %), Mg (0. 17 - 0.67 %), Al (49 - 378 mg kg(-1)), Ba (15.53 - 69.84 mg kg(-1)) and B (34.7 - 56.5 mg kg(-1)).

AB - This paper describes the application of artificial neural networks (ANNs) method to the modeling of 13 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)retentionsin temperature - programmed gas chromatography. The ANN method used resulted in relatively good agreement (RMStesting = 0.018) between the measured and the predicted retention times for 13 PAHs. Somewhat higher discrepancy in prediction was observed for the late – eluted PAHs at lower temperature ramps.
