AB - Titanium dioxide is a photocatalyst, known not only for its ability to oxidize organic contaminants, but also for its antimicrobial properties. In this article, significant enhancement of the antimicrobial activity of TiO2 (up to 32 times) was demonstrated after its activation by ball milling. The antimicrobial activity was analyzed for one fungal and 13 bacterial ATCC strains using the microdilution method and recording the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values. In order to further investigate the correlation between the mechanical activation of TiO2 and its antimicrobial activity, the structure, morphology and phase composition of the material were studied by means of Electron Microscopy, X-ray diffraction and nitrogen adsorption-desorption measurements. UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra were recorded and the Kubelka-Munk function was applied to convert reflectance into the equivalent band gap energy (Eg) and, consequently, to investigate changes in the Eg value. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to analyze the influence of mechanical activation on the Ti 2p and O 1s spectra. The presented results are expected to enable the development of more sustainable and effective advanced TiO2-based materials with antimicrobial properties that could be used in numerous green technology applications.

AB - Cordierite 2MgO+2Al2O3+5SiO2 is frequently used ceramic material, that is commonly used as a carrier of electrical components due to its low dielectric constant (~ 5), and low temperature thermal expansion coefficient (20•10-7 ºC-1). In order to accelerate the process of sintering, 5.00 mass% TeO2 was added to the starting mixtures. System was tested in two parallel mixtures, one with no added additives, and the other one with TeO2. The mechanical activation of the both mixtures was performed in a high-energy ball mill in time intervals from 0 to 40 min with ball to powder mass ratio 1:40. The particle size analysis (PSA) was employed in order to determine the changes in the particle size of the mechanically treated powders. The phase composition of the starting powders as well as microstructures was analyzed by the means of X-ray diffraction method and SEM.

The mechanical activation of the starting mixtures was performed in a high energy ball mill in time intervals from 0 to 160 minutes. In following, starting mixtures were sintered at 1300 °C for 2h. In order to determine the changes in the particle size distribution, the mechanically treated powders were characterized by a laser light-scattering particle size analyzer. The phase composition of the starting mixtures and sintered samples was analyzed by the X-ray diffraction method. Differential thermal analyses (DTA) and thermo-gravimetric (TG) analysis were used in order to determine characteristic temperatures. Kissinger's equation was employed to calculate apparent activation energies of various processes that occur within the system while heating. Based on the obtained DTA results, it was established that mechanical activation along with MoO3 additive, has influence on sintering temperature which was decreased for about 150 °C.

Differential thermal (DTA) and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis were used in order to determine characteristic temperatures within the system during heating. Based on the obtained DTA results, it was established that mechanical activation with additive MoO3, has influence on decreasing sintering temperatures for about 150°C.

abstract = "Cordierite, 2MgO•2Al2O3•5SiO2 (MAS), is high-temperature ceramic material. Cordierite is commonly used material because of outstanding electrical properties, low temperature expansion coefficient and low dielectric constant. In order to accelerate the process of sintering, 5.00 mass% MoO3 has been added to the starting mixtures. The mechanical activation of the starting mixtures was performed in a high energy ball mill during 0-160 minutes. All starting mixtures were sintered at 1100°C, 1200°C and 1300°C for 2h. The particle size analysis (PSA) was employed in order to determine the changes in the particle size of the mechanically treated powders. The phase composition of the starting powders was analyzed by the X-ray diffraction method. Differential thermal (DTA) and thermogravimetric (TG) analysis were used in order to determine characteristic temperatures within the system during heating. Based on the obtained DTA results, it was established that mechanical activation with additive MoO3, has influence on decreasing sintering temperatures for about 150°C.",

AB - The aim of this paper was investigation of structural and electrical properties of magnesium titanate ceramic obtained mechanochemically and subjected to two stage sintering process. Mixtures of MgO and TiO2 were treated in a planetary ball mill for several time intervals ranging from 0 to 160 minutes. Powders prepared in this way were two stage sintered, at 1400 °C in air in the first stage, and then post-sintered by pressure assisted technique Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) at 1280 °C in argon atmosphere with a pressure of 200 MPa. X-ray diffraction was performed in order to established phase composition of obtained ceramics. Densities of sintered samples were measured by Archimedes method. The values of density were over 96 % of theoretical one and pure MgTiO3 phase was observed. Morphology of sintered bodies was investigated by SEM, and micrographs indicate the final sintering stage and very dense ceramics. Electrical measurements were performed in the microwave field of frequency.

AB - Cordierite (MAS) is difficult to sinter because of the very narrow sintering temperature range (1300-1400ºC). Because a low temperature process is desirable, it is necessary to find functional ads which can allow easier sintering process at lower temperature. The influence of MoO3 on the preparation process of cordierite ceramics was investigated. 2MgO-2Al2O3-5SiO2 was researched by sintering followed binary systems: MgO/MoO3, Al2O3/MoO3 and SiO2/MoO3 (all sintered at 850ºC and 1100ºC, sintering time 2h). Composition of these systems was 80% of oxide and 20% MoO3. The effects of sintering, the composition and morphology were followed by X-ray diffraction, SEM microscopy and EDS analysis. It has been found that MoO3, beside liquid phase, forms intermediary unstable compounds with MgO and Al2O3, which is the significance information for further research. MAS ceramics were sintered with 20% MoO3 at 1100ºC, 1200ºC and 1300ºC, during 2h.

AB - Strontium-titanate powder was mechanically activated in a planetary ball mill for 0, 5, 10, 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes. Non-isothermal sintering of non-activated and activated SrTiO3 powder samples in the temperature interval from 50 to 1300 0C with three different heating rates (10, 15 and 20 0C/min) was investigated on a dilatometer. X-ray powder diffraction and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to determine the phase composition, lattice microstrains and microstructure morphology of the samples. XRD results showed the presence of new phases: SrCO3 (strontuim-carbonate) and TiO2 (anatase) after 30 minutes of mechanical activation.

AB - In this article the influence of mechanical activation on sintering process of barium-strontiumtitanate ceramics has been investigated. Both non-activated and mixtures treated in planetary ball mill for 5, 10, 20, 40, 80 and 120 minutes were sintered at 1100-1400 °C for 2 hours in air atmosphere. The influence of mechanical activation on phase composition and crystal structure has been analyzed by XRD, while the effect of activation and sintering process on microstructure was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. It has been established that temperature of 1100 °C was to low to induce final sintering stage for the system. Electrical measurements have been conducted for the densest ceramics sintered at 1400 °C for 2 hours.

AB - Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3 was prepared from the starting materials BaCO3, SrCO3 and TiO2 through solid state reaction. Mixture of these oxides was mechanically activated using a high-energy ball mill at different time intervals from 0 to 120 minutes. The crystal structure was determined by X-ray diffraction to obtain information about the composition of phase variation. It was observed that after 40 minutes occurred early synthesis Ba0.8Sr0.2TiO3. Particle size distribution along with scanning electron microscopy gave very useful information about powder morphology.

AB - According to its exceptional electrical characteristics, such as low temperature expansion coefficient, low dielectric constant and good mechanical properties, cordierite, 2MgO⋅2Al2O3⋅5SiO2, represents very attractive ceramic material in the field of high temperatures. In order to accelerate the process of sintering, 1 mass% Bi2O3 has been added to starting mixtures. Liquid phase sintering caused by presence of bismuth-oxide leads to lowering temperature of cordierite formation. Mechanical activation of starting mixtures (0-56 minutes in vibro-mill) additionally leads to lowering sintering temperatures. Process of sintering was performed at 1200, 1300 and 1400 oC, for 2h. BET and PSA were employed in order to follow the changes in specific surface area and particle size of mechanically treated powders. Phase composition of starting powders and sintered materials was analyzed by X-ray diffraction method. Moreover, SEM analysis was used for analysis of powders morphology and sintered pallets microstructure.

AB - The aim of this paper was to analyse the sintering kinetics and microstructure evolution of ZnO. Powder was isothermally sintered (15, 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes) in the temperature range from 800 to 1200oC. The values of Lenel parameter were used to analyze both densification and mass transport processes. Scanning electron microscopy was performed in order to determine the microstructure evolution and dependence of average grain size on temperature and time of sintering. These results will enable development of new phenomenological equations that can be applied in analyses of sintering kinetics.
