AB - The present work deals with the investigation of ion-beam assisted annealing/mixing effects on compositional and structural changes in Al-Cu-Co multilayers. 800 nm thick Al64Cu20Co16 multilayers prepared by magnetron sputtering deposition, consisting of 28 successive single-metal Al-, Cu-, and Co-nanolayers were treated by thermal annealing at 300 °C, 400 °C, or 500 °C as well as ion irradiation by 30 MeV Cu5+ ions at fluences of 1x1013 to 5x1014 with an average flux of 2.38 × 1010 at.cm−2s−1. The samples were characterized with SEM, EDX, XRD, and TEM including HAADF. In contrast to the original multilayer, the treated samples were found to consist of two types of alternating nanolayers. A wider coarse-grained structurally and chemically homogeneous single-phase nanolayer formed by Al2Cu, and a narrow fine-grained two-phase nanolayer, which has a heterogeneous composite structure in which the central Co sublayer (being a residue of the original single-metal Co nanolayer) is surrounded from both sides with Al-Co sublayers, consisting of Al9Co2. This Co sublayer is considered to be a diffusion blocker for Al and Cu as well as hindering the movement of borders between particular nanolayers. The formation of a ternary phase in the investigated samples was not confirmed in any of the samples.

AB - Titanium nitride (TiN) is an attractive alternative for modern and future photonic applications, as its optical properties can be engineered over a wide spectral range. In this study, we have used sequential implantation of gold and silver ions with varying ion fluence, as well as subsequent annealing, in order to modify the optical and plasmonic properties of TiN thin films and correlated this to their structural properties. Our investigations show that the columnar structure of the TiN films is partially destroyed upon implantation, but metallic Au and Ag nanoparticles are formed. The irradiation further induces a reduction of the lattice constant as well as changes the TiN stoichiometry and grain size. From the optical point of view, the implanted films possess less metallicity with increasing Ag fluence and losses several times lower than the as-deposited film, which can be correlated with the deficiency of nitrogen and additional defects. Subsequent annealing partially recovered the destroyed columnar structure, and the films become more metallic where the optical losses are much smaller in comparison to the as-implanted situation, being comparable to those of pure Au and Ag. In this way, by varying the implantation fluence of silver ions properly while keeping the gold fluence constant, we were able to optimize experimental parameters in such a way to ensure the formation of TiN with desirable optical performances.

AB - The effect of Cu concentration on the order/disorder behaviour of the AlCoCuxFeNi (x = 0.6 to 3.0) multi-principal element alloys was investigated. BCC and/or FCC phases were observed in the microstructures of the alloys after casting and annealing at 1050 ◦C followed by slow cooling. Interesting is that the alloys form ordered structures after casting and disordered structures after annealing and slow cooling, while the opposite would be expected. The ordering in the as-cast state is explained by the strong affinity of Al to transition metals, which results in the formation of supercell structures having sublattices occupied by certain elements only. Disordering after annealing has two reasons. Either the phase is composed of nearly pure element (Cu) and is disordered by default or it is composed of randomly distributed nano-segregated regions within a single phase resulting in a uniform distribution of all elements in the sublattices and therefore appearing to be macroscopically disordered. The reason for the formation of such nano-segregated areas might reside in the reduction of Gibbs free energy due to the annealing by the interplay between enthalpy and entropy.

AB - The ion implantation technique has a number of advantages over conventional methods for the improvement of thin films that offer the various possibilities of their use in different industrial and technological fields. Herein, we present the effects of metal ion implantation on the structural and optical properties of TiN thin films. TiN films of 170 nm thickness were grown by d.c. reactive sputtering on Si (100) wafers and then irradiated at 5×1016 ions/cm2 with either Au, Ag, or Cu ions by using two different energies per each implanted metal. The results showed that as deposited TiN crystallizes in form of fcc cubic structure, with the crystallites preferentially oriented along the (111) plane. For all implanted layers the cubic crystallographic structure was preserved, but compared to as deposited TiN the crystallites were smaller and the lattice was contracted. Besides, the surface compositional analysis of as deposited sample showed the coexistence of TiN, TiO2 and TiOxNy phases and this was related to the surface oxidation of the films due to the exposure to air. After implantation, the results were almost similar for all metals, showing an increase in TiO2 contribution and the formation of pure metallic Au and Ag phases, while copper is in the Cu2+ state, which is attributed to Cu(II)-oxide and Cu(OH)2. The microstructural characteristics including defect formation, changes in the crystallite size and lattice contraction, and also growth of different metallic phases during implantations were correlated with the findings of the optical characterization of the implanted films. For as deposited film we found energy gap of 2.91 eV, which was lower than the value typical for TiN. After implantation the gap was shifted to higher energies, while at the visible part of the region, additional energy levels, at photon energies below 2.9 eV were observed. Further, all implanted films showed degraded photocatalytic activity compared to as deposited TiN, among which Cu-implanted samples exhibited the best photocatalytic performances. The lower photocatalytic activity of Au and Ag-implanted films compared to Cu implantations was ascribed to larger structural defects and formation of less favorable electronic states.

AB - Titanium-nitride (TiN) is known as a very promising plasmonic material, which offers many advantages compared to conventional metals commonly used in practical devices. Despite many improvements, TiN still suffers from high losses in the near-infrared (NIR) spectral region, making it less suitable for real-life applications. In this study, we have investigated the effects of pure silver implanted as well as silver/gold co-implanted TiN thin films on their optical properties, which we analyzed by spectroscopic ellipsometry. We demonstrate that the presence of silver and gold drastically changes both the real and imaginary part of the dielectric function. The implanted films exhibit optical losses several times lower compared to as-deposited TiN. The changes are in particular more pronounced for the samples with Au/Ag co-implantations, reaching nearly the same optical values as those of pure gold and being only slightly larger than that of silver. Thus, such an optical tuning of TiN opens new horizons and provide high potential for its implementation into plasmonic applications.

AB - Au-Ag alloy nanoparticles were formed into amorphous silicon by sequential ion implantation of Au and Ag. Monocrystalline Si was amorphized at the initial moment of implantation with 1 × 1016 ions/cm2 gold ions, and then different silver fluences were applied in the range of 1 × 1016–1 × 1017 ions/cm2. After implantations the samples were investigated by means of Rutherford backscattering spectrometry and transmission electron microscopy. The nanoparticles were found to be formed at surface and sub-surface regions of the Si substrate, at depths corresponding to the maximum distribution of Au and Ag ions. The particles are crystalline in nature with sizes from 2 nm to 30 nm in diameter, increasing with silver ion fluence. Although the lattice constants of gold and silver are too close to be distinguished by measuring the characteristic interplanar spacings, imaging in scanning transmission mode confirms the formation of Au-Ag bimetallic nanoparticles, presenting a solid-solution alloy of gold and silver.

AB - Formation of Au-Ag alloy nanoparticles in TiN thin films is demonstrated through sequential implantation of Au and Ag ions. The irradiations were done with 200 keV Au ions at fluence of 1.0 × 1016 ions/cm2 and 150 keV Ag ions to the fluences in the range of 0.7–1.3 × 1017 ions/cm2. It was found that irradiations introduce around 1.5 at.% of gold and up to ~20 at.% of silver species causing also the significant sputtering of the surface. TiN surface besides the topographic undergoes chemical changes. The presence of silver and gold is confirmed by photoemission spectroscopy showing that the implanted ions did not form any kind of compound with the surrounding matrix. Electron microscopy evidenced the formation of crystalline and quasi-spherical particles with dimensions below 10 nm. Elemental analysis revealed that the obtained nanoparticles present Au-Ag alloys, with two elements mixed over the whole volume of the particles in different Au:Ag ratios. © 2020 Elsevier B.V.

AB - Fe/Polyethylene nanocomposite was synthesized by ion beam implantation of 56Fe+ into bulk high-density polyethylene. Nanoscale surface morphology along with magnetic and optical behavior was investigated. The aim of the research was to investigate changes of polyethylene's surface layer morphology with the change of Fe implantation fluence in the high fluence range and to find correlations with the magnetic and optical behavior. Four implantation fluences were applied: 5 × 1016, 1 × 1017, 2 × 1017 and 5 × 1017 cm−2, while the implantation energy was 95 keV. Concentration profiles of implanted Fe were analyzed by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry, showing Fe concentration profile maxima closer to the surface with increasing implantation fluence. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy showed the formation of metallic nanoparticles with sizes in a range from below 1 nm up to few tens of nanometers, depending on the fluence, and for the highest implantation fluence, a continuous layer was formed. Magneto-optic Kerr effect magnetometry demonstrates weak ferromagnetic behavior for the 2 higher fluences, and superparamagnetic for the 2 lower fluences. The UV-VIS remission function spectra show the peak in the UV region, which we attribute to iron nanoparticles.

AB - In the presented paper, changes of high-density polyethylene's (HDPE) surface properties along with the changes of chemical composition, as a consequence of Fe ion implantation with different fluences, were investigated. Applied implantation fluences were as follows: 5 × 1016, 1 × 1017, 2 × 1017 and 5 × 1017 ions cm−2, while the implantation energy was 95 keV. The samples were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), Four point contact probe, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and contact angle measurements. Significant changes in the chemical composition were found by XPS and FTIR, which were followed by changes in surface morphology, increase of roughness, and decrease of sheet resistance that has a percolation threshold that starts for the fluence of 1 × 1017 ions cm−2. Surface free energy increases as a consequence of implantation, up to the fluence of 1 × 1017 ions cm−2, and then decreases for the 2 higher fluences. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

AB - In this study, we demonstrated the formation of a new type of AuAg@Ag nanostructure in titanium nitride (TiN) thin films using sequential implantation of Au and Ag ions. The TiN films deposited by DC reactive sputtering were sequentially implanted with 200 keV gold ions at fluences of 0.5 × 10 16 and 1 × 10 16 ions/cm 2 and 150 keV silver ions at fluences of 1 × 10 16 , 2 × 10 16 , 3 × 10 16 , and 4 × 10 16 ions/cm 2 . Formation of spherical-like particles with dimensions below 10 nm, homogeneously distributed along the ion track of implanted ions is verified by high resolution transmission electron microscopy. Specific nanostructure containing Au–Ag alloy in the center of the particle and only silver on the periphery was found in the TiN sample sequentially implanted with 1.0 × 10 16 ions/cm 2 of Au and 4 × 10 16 ions/cm 2 of Ag using high angle annular dark field scanning electron microscopy together with elemental mapping analysis. On the other hand, for the sample implanted with 0.5 × 10 16 ions/cm 2 of Au and 4 × 10 16 ions/cm 2 of Ag only formation of Au–Ag alloy was observed. A mechanism for the formation of a new type core/shell nanostructure in ion implanted TiN thin films is proposed. By varying the implantation fluence of the gold and silver ions properly, the optimized experimental parameters for creation of a specific AuAg@Ag core/shell nanoparticles were achieved. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

© 2019 Elsevier B.V.",

AB - We have studied processes of gold ion implantation in polyethylene (PE) by theoretical chemistry methods. Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics (CPMD) simulations of collisions and following chemical kinetics considerations lead to the conclusion that chemical bonds between gold atoms and PE chains are formed. We have identified and characterized by a DFT method various stable structures with C-Au, C-Au-C, C-Au-H and C-Au center dot center dot center dot H-2 types of chemical bonds. The binding energies (BE) of C-Au bonds are as high as 227 kJ mol(-1) and the bond analysis reveals a covalent bonding character. For the experimental detection of these structures in gold implanted PE, we predicted characteristic infra-red (IR) frequencies. The C-Au stretching vibrational modes lie around 500 cm(-1). Other characteristic frequencies lie in a band between 730 cm(-1) and 1500 cm(-1).
