AB - Crosslinking of polyamide 6 (PA) and filled one with glass fibres (PA/GF) was initiated via macroradical formation by gamma irradiation either in air or in inert argon atmosphere. The crosslinked portion was found to start at absorbed dose around 300 kGy and achieved about 60 and 40 wt% for PA and PA/GF, respectively, if irradiation proceeded in inert, while in air molecular weight increase was only observed without crosslinked gel formation. DSC indicated that irradiation leads to a decrease in crystallinity as well as lamellae thickness. Besides crosslinking, scission of polymer chains also occurs. Modest increase of impact strength was found for PA while small decrease for PA/GF was observed. The dependence of Youngs modulus values on the irradiation dose indicates a minimum around gel point being more pronounced for PA compared to the composite. Irradiation resulted in minor changes in tensile strength and elongation at break while a substantial increase in the elongation at yield was found for PA if irradiated in inert atmosphere. Generally, the application of an optimal dose of gamma irradiation in air results in an increase of toughness of PA without changing other mechanical properties.

AB - Scientific productivity data (number of publications and h-indices), collected from the Web of Science (WoS) database for the period 2005-2010 for 13 countries of Southeast Europe (including Austria as the reference country) and for the 251 WoS categories were grouped, during extraction of data, into 41 fields of science (FoS) according to Frascati manual classification (OECD in Revised field of science and technology (FoS) classification in the Frascati manual, pp. 1-12, 2007). The Scientific Performance QuaLity (SPQL) level has been defined and calculated for the 13 studied countries and for all FoS based on the established best fit of the linear dependence between P (1/alpha) and h-index. From these data the SPQL levels of the six major fields and overall country levels have been generated in a way which makes them dependent not on the quantity of scientific publications output, but on its quality thus making them suitable for constructing conceivable science policies. Nevertheless, general observed trend shows growth of the quality of scientific performance (SPQL) with scientific production output, but there are evident exceptions from such a tendency in both positive and negative directions. The highest quality levels of the reached scientific performance have been identified for the 41 FoSs (subfields) and 6 major FoS by the countries concerned.

AB - Nano-sized powders of iron oxides have been synthesized electrochemically at temperatures in the range of 295-361 K, and current densities in the range of 200-1000 mA dm(-2). The structure and morphology of the powders were investigated by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy techniques. Their infrared absorption spectra, specific heat C(p)(T) and magnetic susceptibility chi(T) temperature dependences are also determined. The obtained powders consist of two phases, each possessing distinguished characteristics: the one formed of large plates and the other of whiskers. By appropriate adjustment of the synthesis conditions, it is possible to change features and relative abundances of the two phases, and that way to control morphology and other powder properties. Relaxation and transformation of the phases under external influences was also investigated, and the optimal procedure for preparation and stabilization of iron oxide nano-sized powders with desired characteristics was established.

AB - AIM: To investigate the significance of p16 and O-6- methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) genes promoter hypermethylation and K-ras mutations on colorectal tumorigenesis and progression. METHODS: p16 and MGMT methylation status was examined on 47 tumor samples, and K-ras mutational status was examined on 85 tumor samples. For methylation analysis, a methylation specific PCR (MS-PCR) method was used. RESULTS: p16 and MGMT promoter methylation was found in 51% (24/47) and 43% (20/47) of CRCS, respectively, and the K-ras mutation was found in 44% (37/85) of CRCs. Comethylation of p16 and MGMT genes was significantly associated with lower aggressiveness of the disease within a two-year period of observation. Only 27% of patients with simultaneous p16 and MGMT methylation showed the detectible occurrence of metastasis and/or death, compared to 67% of patients without double methylation or with no methylation (3/11 vs 22/33, P LT 0.05, chi(2)-test). In addition, p16 and MGMT comethylation showed a trend toward an association with longer survival in patients with CRCs (35.5 +/- 6.0 mo vs 23.1 +/- 3.2 mo, P = 0.072, Log-rank test). Progression of the disease within a two-year period was observed in 66% of patients carrying the K-ras mutation, compared to only 19% of patients with wild type K-ras (29/44 vs 7/37, P LT 0.001, chi(2)-test). The presence of the K-ras mutation significantly correlated to shortened overall survival (20.0 +/- 1.9 mo vs 37.0 +/- 1.8 mo, P LT 0.001, Log-rank test). The comethylation of p16 and MGMT genes was significantly associated with lower aggressiveness of the disease even when K-ras mutations were included in the analysis as an independent variable. CONCLUSION: Our data suggest that comethylation of promoters of p16 and MGMT genes could have a prognostic value in patients with CRC. Specifically, concurrent methylation of both genes correlates with better prognosis. (C) 2007 The WJG Press. All rights reserved.

AB - Polyimide resins were obtained from the reaction between N-[4-benzoyl-2-(2,5-dioxo-2,5-dihydro-pyrrol-1-yl)-phenyl]-acetamide and the following compounds with terminal amino groups: urea, 4-[(4-aminophenyl)sulfonyl] aniline, thiourea, 2-aminoethylamine, and 4.4-diaminodiphenylmethane. The thermal and thermooxidative behaviour of the polyimide resins was studied by thermogravimetric measurements (TG) in oxygen and nitrogen. Polyimide resins have been irradiated (500 kGy) and their radiation stability evaluated on the basis of thermal and thermooxidative behaviour of irradiated samples. The thermal and oxidative degradation of the examined polyimides is complex and occurs in two phases. The first step occurs in both nitrogen and oxygen but it is somewhat less pronounced in oxygen due to oxidation and formation of more stable products. All samples showed very good radiation stability and there is almost no change in the first degradation step while the span of the peaks in the second step is narrowed and temperatures are slightly lower. AB - Urethane acrylate resins based on partially modified aliphatic hyperbranched polyesters (HBP) have been synthesized. HBP of the second and the third generation were synthesized from 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid and di-trimethylol propane. The modification of certain amount of OH end-groups was carried out with soybean fatty acids. The urethane acrylates with different degrees of acrylation have been obtained by reaction of partially modified HBP and different amounts of NCO adduct which had been previously obtained by reaction of equimolar amounts of isophorone diisocyanate and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate. The synthesized samples were characterized by FT-IR,H-1 and C-13 NMR and GPC. The theological properties of uncured samples and mechanical and thermal properties of UV cured urethane acrylates diluted with 20 wt.% hexanediol diacrylate were examined. The modification of OH end-groups with soybean fatty acids causes a rapid decrease in viscosity of HBP. The examined properties of urethane acrylates depend on the degree of acrylation. After irradiating, the additional cross-linking, which is caused by reaction of double bonds from unsaturated fatty acids, has also important effect on the properties of cured samples. AB - In this work the synthesis of a crosslinked macroporous copolymer was effected from methyl methacrylate and acrylamide. The synthesis process began with emulsion prepolymerization, followed by sol-gel copolymerization until a hard block was obtained. Determination of the properties of the obtained material was carried out by FTIR, mercury porosimetry, and SEM microscopy. The material was characterized by a porous structure with open pores. The macroporous copolymer obtained can be used for polymer-analog reactions and the transformation of amide and ester groups into acyl azide groups. It can be used as a hard inert support for the immobilization of enzymes, or other proteins, by condensation of acyl azide group on poly-mer with the free amino group from the base amino acid of enzyme/protein. For the immobilization of microorganisms it can be used by vacuum diffusion of microorganism suspension into the porous structure, without active group transformation reactions. With microorganisms in the polymer pores, microorganism colonies form within the copolymer by microbial fermentation. (C) 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 91: 387-395, 2004.

AB - A series of acrylate functionalized samples based on hyperbranched hydroxy-terminated polyesters with different molecular weights and different degrees of acrylation were synthesized. The obtained urethane acrylates were slightly yellow viscose liquids. Their composition characterized by FTIR and H-1-NMR spectroscopy and their molecular weights were measured by GPC. All the synthesized samples were diluted with 25 wt.% 1.4-butanediol dimethacrylate (BDDM). The rheological properties of the uncured samples and the dynamic mechanical properties of the UV cured samples were examined. All the samples exhibit Newtonian behavior, which indicates the absence of physical entanglements in these polymers. The viscosity increases with increasing number of acrylic groups per molecule. The glass transition temperature of the UV cured samples increases with increasing the number of acrylic groups per molecule. The value of the storage modulus in the rubber-elastic plateau and the cross-link density increase with increasing number of acrylic groups per molecule. The formed networks are inhomogeneous and the residual unsaturation is the highest in the samples with the largest number of acrylic groups per molecule.

AB - X-ray fluorescence and DTA-specific heat measurements were performed on several samples of the Hf-Fe phase system, at 50:50%, and 33:67% concentrations. In the first concentration range the possibility of an ordered compound formation has still been unresolved. In the second, a strong dependence of structure and magnetic properties on various external parameters has been found. The presented investigations provide some additional data about the concentration and temperature dependence of structural and magnetic stability in these two particularly interesting domains of concentration of the system.

The changes in the supermolecular structure are evaluated and correlated to the heterogeneous distribution of crosslinks in polymer structure caused by the specific early excitation process. The nonlinear change in enthalpy of fusion, peak melting temperature, activation energy of ordering transition, number of defects, and maximal specific heat capacity with absorbed dose is explained in terms of separated crosslinking processes, fast on the lamellae surfaces and slow in the crystal core at double bond site that is evident for absorbed dose greater than 1000 kGy. AB - Different polyimide resins were synthesized using 1,6-bis-maleimidohexane and the following compounds with terminal amino groups: 4,4-diaminodiphenylmethane, 4,4-diaminodiphenylsulphone, 1,4-bis-(3-aminopropyl)-piperazine and 4,4NN-bismaleimidodiphenylsulphone and 1,2-diaminoehtane and 1,4-bis-(3-aminopropyl)-piperazine. The thermal and thermooxidative behaviour of the polyimide resins was studied by thermogravimetric measurements (TG) in oxygen and nitrogen. Polyimide resins have been irradiated and their radiation stability evaluated on the basis of thermal and thermooxidative behaviour of irradiated samples. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - Specific conductivity of molten mixtures of acetamide with following acetate salts was measured at 83 +/- 0.1degreesC : a) acetamide - anhydrous sodium acetate (up to 0.051 mole fraction), b) acetainide sodium acetate trihydrate (entire concentration range) and c) acetamide - zinc acetate dihydrate ( up to 0.24 mole fraction). Selected composition of all three mixtures, with low melting points were chosen for the studies of the changes of conductance with temperature. The mixtures: with sodium acetate both anhydrous and hydrated showed fairly high specific conductivity (approximate to10(-2) S/cm), nearly two orders of magnitude higher than the mixture with hydrated zinc acetate. Molar conductivity was also calculated. The results were discussed in terms of acetamide-salt-water interactions. Attempts were made to calculate the degree of dissociation of the salts in molten acetamide. The results were compared with the data obtained from earlier thermochemical studies of the same melt systems.

AB - The syntheses of 1,2-ethane-bis-maleamidoacid, N,N-1,2-bis-maleimidoethane (BME), and polyimide resins based on BME and four different diamines are given. The thermal and thermooxidative stability of the resins was studied by thermogravimetry (TG) following parameters such as temperatures for defined weight loss and initial decomposition rate, i.e. shape of TG and first derivative TG curves. Samples have been irradiated and their radiation stability evaluated on the basis of the thermal and thermooxidative behavior of the irradiated samples. The thermal behaviors have been analyzed and the resin based on the diamine with the benzene ring showed the best thermal stability. Radiation in the applied dose range showed an increase of thermal stability. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
