Dispersive properties of self–induced transparency in two–level media

AB  - We focus on self-induced transparency (SIT) in the propagation of a pulse in a dispersive medium. The latter can be an ordinary optical medium or, more interestingly, a quantum metamaterial. In both cases we consider a sequence of two level atoms each with a characteristic resonant frequency ω0. The propagation features are controlled by the ratio of the pulse frequency ω over the dipole resonant frequency, i.e. on the quantity X=ω/ω0. We consider analytically two pulse limits, viz. the sharp line limit as well as the inhomogeneouly broadened case. In the first case we find that for pulse frequencies larger than ω0, i.e. for X>1 the SIT pulse may be fully stopped through absorption by the medium provided its time width exceeds a certain critical value. In the latter case of inhomogeneously broadened medium we find no such frequency restrictions provided the pulse is wide enough. As a result an SIT pulse can be arbitrarily arrested by the absorbing medium. This dispersion-induced pulse stopping is a manifestation of the quantum nature of the medium and of possible use in metamaterial applications. © 2020 Elsevier Ltd

Stationary solitary and kink solutions in the helicoidal Peyrard-Bishop model of DNA molecule

AB  - We study nonlinear dynamics of the DNA molecule relying on a helicoidal Peyrard-Bishop model. We look for traveling wave solutions and show that a continuum approximation brings about kink solitons moving along the chain. This statement is supported by the numerical solution of a relevant dynamical equation of motion. Finally, we argue that an existence of both kinks and localized modulated solitons (breathers) could be a useful tool to describe DNA-RNA transcription. © 2019 Author(s).

Towards a theory of flow stress in multimodal polycrystalline aggregates. Effects of dispersion hardening

AB  - We elaborate the recently introduced theory of flow stress, including yield strength, in polycrystalline materials under quasi-static plastic deformations, thereby extending the case of single-mode aggregates to multimodal ones in the framework of a two-phase model which is characterized by the presence of crystalline and grain-boundary phases. Both analytic and graphic forms of the generalized Hall-Petch relations are obtained for multimodal samples with BCC (α-phase Fe), FCC (Cu, Al, Ni) and HCP (α-Ti, Zr) crystalline lattices at T=300K with different values of the grain-boundary (second) phase. The case of dispersion hardening due to a natural incorporation into the model of a third phase including additional particles of doping materials is considered. The maximum of yield strength and the respective extremal grain size of samples are shifted by changing both the input from different grain modes and the values at the second and third phases. We study the influence of multimodality and dispersion hardening on the temperature-dimensional effect for yield strength within the range of 100-350K. © 2019 Author(s).

AB  - The properties of the intramolecular vibrational excitation (vibron) in a quasi 1D macromolecular structure are studied. It is supposed that due to the vibron interaction with optical phonon modes, a vibron might form partially dressed small polaron states. The properties of these states are investigated in dependence on the basic system parameters and temperature of a thermal bath. We also investigate the process of damping of the polaron amplitude as a function of temperature and vibron-phonon coupling strength. Two different regimes of the polaron damping are found and discussed.

Self-induced transparency of the optical phonons

AB  - We show that the self-induced transparency of optical phonons may appear in a systems consisting of a two level atoms interacting with elastic waves. The presence of the gap in phonon spectrum substantially enhances the pulse delay in respect to the acoustic self induced transparency phenomena. One of the main characteristics of the predicted phenomenon is the appearance of the critical velocity of the self-induced transparency pulse which, in the absorbing media, represents the upper limit which pulse may reach. Its magnitude is determined by the ratio of the phonon gap and the energy difference of the two level system. This feature opens a new way for the control of the speed of elastic waves. We believe that, in the view of the emerging new quantum technologies relying on creation and trapping of the coherent phonons interacting with artificial atoms, some practical implementations of interest for the storage and manipulation of quantum information may be realised on the basis of our work. On the vibron nature in the system of two parallel macromolecular chains: The influence of interchain coupling

AB  - We studied the properties of the intramolecular vibrational excitation (vibron) at finite temperature in a system which consists of two parallel macromolecular chains. It was assumed that vibron interacts exclusively with dispersionless optical phonons and the whole system is considered to be in thermal equilibrium. Particular attention has been paid to the examination of the impact of the temperature and strength of the interchain coupling on the small polaron crossover. For that purpose we employed partial dressing method which enables the study of the degree of the phonon dressing of the vibron excitations in a wide area of system parameter space. We found that in the non-adiabatic regime the degree of dressing as a function of coupling constant continuously increases reflecting the smooth transition of the slightly dressed, practically free vibron, to a heavily dressed one: small polaron. As adiabaticity rises this transition becomes increasingly steeper, and finally, in the adiabatic limit, a discontinuous jump of the degree of dressing is observed. The interchain coupling manifests itself through the increase of the effective adiabatic parameter of the system. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB  - We study the hopping mechanism of the vibron excitation transport in the system of two parallel unshifted 1D macromolecuar chains in the framework of non-adiabatic polaron theory. We suppose that the vibron interaction with thermal oscillations of the macromolecular structural elements will result in vibron self-trapping and the formation of the partial dressed vibron state. We also suppose that quasiparticle motion takes place via a sequence of random sitejumps, in each of which the quasiparticle can migrate either to the first neighbor site of the macromolecular chain. With use of the modified Holstein polaron model, we calculate the vibron effective mass in dependence of the basic system parameters and temperature. Special attention is paid to the influence of interchain coupling on vibron dressing. We find that for certain values of the system parameters the quasiparticle mass abruptly changes.

abstract = "We study the hopping mechanism of the vibron excitation transport in the system of two parallel unshifted 1D macromolecuar chains in the framework of non-adiabatic polaron theory. We suppose that the vibron interaction with thermal oscillations of the macromolecular structural elements will result in vibron self-trapping and the formation of the partial dressed vibron state. We also suppose that quasiparticle motion takes place via a sequence of random sitejumps, in each of which the quasiparticle can migrate either to the first neighbor site of the macromolecular chain. With use of the modified Holstein polaron model, we calculate the vibron effective mass in dependence of the basic system parameters and temperature. Special attention is paid to the influence of interchain coupling on vibron dressing. We find that for certain values of the system parameters the quasiparticle mass abruptly changes.",

AB  - In the paper, we consider the quantum effects in reflection of the electromagnetic field from an absorbing Bragg mirror. The special emphasis is placed on the study of the influence of thermal noises of the mirror environment on the fidelity of reflection. Taking the incident light field in coherent and Fock states, we show that the fidelity of reflection turns out to be strongly dependent on the quantum state, and on the level of thermal noise and absorption of the mirror.

The existence of the truly three-dimensional large polarons has been demonstrated. Their appearance demands the complex interference of the effects of the reduced dimensionality, the nature and strength of the interchain coupling and particular geometrical arrangement of molecular chains. The Influence of Interchain Coupling on Intramolecular Oscillation Mobility in Coupled Macromolecular Chains: The case of Coplanar Parallel Chains

AB  - We enlarge our results from the study of the hopping mechanism of the oscillation excitation transport in 1D model of one biologica-likel macromolecular chain to the case of a system composed from two 1D parallel macromolecular chains with consideration of the properties of intramolecular oscillation excitations. We suppose, that due to the exciton interaction with thermal oscillation (generated by mechanical phonon subsystem) of structural elements (consisting of the peptide group) of the chains, the exciton becomes by self trapped and forms the polaron state. We suggest a model which generalizes the modified Holstein polaron model to the case of two macromolecular chains and find that because of the interchain coupling, the exciton energy band is splitted into two subbands. The hopping process of exciton migration along the macromolecular chains is studied in dependence of system parameters and temperature. We pay an special attention to the temperature range (near T = 300 K) in which living cells operate. It is found that for the certain values of the system parameters there exists the abrupt change of the exciton migration nature from practically free (light) exciton motion to an immobile (heavy, dressed by phonon cloud) quasiparticle We discuss an application of the obtained results to the exciton transport both within deoxyribonucleic acid molecule and in the 2D polymer films organized from such macromolecular chains.

AB  - We study the properties of the single large adiabatic polaron in the substances composed of three parallel equally separated coplanar molecular chains. Particular attention has been devoted to the influence of the interchain coupling strength on polaron stability in order to elucidate the origin of the large polaron existence, which, contrary to the predictions of continuum adiabatic theories may persist in realistic conditions. Our results indicate the existence of the effectively two-dimensional stationary polarons with comparably large longitudinal radius while the transverse one ranges from zero, in the absence of interchain coupling, to approximately twice of the interchain separation when coupling strength tends towards the infinity. These two-dimensional polarons are both energetically and dynamically stable. This is quite the opposite to the expectations based on the traditional adiabatic large polaron theories which, in the case of short ranged electron phonon interaction, predict that the stable large polaron may exist only in 1D systems. Stability of these 2D polarons increases with the increase of the interchain coupling strength so that they may be comparably more stable than the pure 1D polarons. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. We discuss an application of these results to study of vibron transport to 3D bundles of such macromolecules chains considering it as polymer nanorods and to 2D polymer films organized from such macromolecules.

Theory of photoacoustic effect in media with thermal memory

AB  - This paper presents a model for indirect photoacoustic response that includes thermal memory effects. At low frequencies, the model reduces to the well-known thermal piston model of photoacoustic response given by Rosencweig and Gersho. However, at high frequencies, the presented model predicts resonant behavior of amplitudes and phases of photoacoustic response and determines the respective resonant frequencies. The results of the presented model enable experimental determination of standard thermal properties of solids (thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity), as well as thermal memory properties, thermal relaxation time, and heat propagation speed. AB  - We present a study of the physical properties of the vibrational excitation in alpha-helicoidal macromolecular chains, caused by the interaction with acoustical and optical phonon modes. The influence of the temperature and the basic system parameters on the vibron dressing have been analyzed by employing the simple mean-field approach based on the variational extension of the Lang-Firsov unitary transformation. The applied approach predicts a region in system parameter space where one has an abrupt transition from a partially dressed (light and mobile) to a fully dressed (immobile) vibron state. We found that the boundary of this region depends on system temperature and the type of bond among structural elements in the macromolecular chain.

Interchain coupling effects on large acoustic polaron in two parallel molecular chains

AB  - We examine the effects of the interchain coupling on the properties of the large adiabatic polaron in the two chain model. In dependence of the strength of the interchain coupling (gamma) two different types of polaron solutions were found. In the weak coupling regime (gamma LT 1/2), polaron is confined to a single chain. As coupling increases continual transition towards the delocalization takes place - polaron amplitudes on both chains gradually become equalized, in the same time, its binding energy vanishes. Finally, above the critical coupling strength, polaron is fully delocalized - equally distributed over the both chains while its energy lies within the band of free states. Our the most specific prediction is the substantial impact of the polaron motion on its character. This implies the emergence of the two different regimes in charge transfer processes which may be experimentally verified. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB  - We present a study of the applicability of the variational treatments based on using of the modified Lang-Firsov unitary transformation (MLF method) in the investigation of the vibron self-trapped states in biological macromolecular chains. Here we compare the values of the ground state energy predicted by MLF methods with the values of the ground state energy predicted by the standard small-polaron theory, for various values of the basic energy parameters of the system. We obtain regions in system parameter space where MLF approach gives better description of the vibron states.

AB  - If the model of the photoacoustic (PA) response of an investigated system contains many unknown parameters, as is the case with multilayered samples, then the inverse procedure for the calculation of the parameters is highly sensitive to experimental noise. The problem cannot be solved by developing the experimental setup or by data acquisition methods, but only by an improvement of the theoretical approach. This paper presents an analysis of the applicability of the effective medium approximation to the PA response of multilayered samples. It has been shown that the theory is not applicable to the general case, and explicit expressions for the effective values of thermal diffusivity and heat propagation speed have been derived for some special cases.

AB  - We study the influence of temperature and the values of basic energy parameters on the character of vibron self-trapped states in quasi-one-dimensional hydrogen-bonded molecular chains. Investigations have been carried out within the one-dimensional Holstein molecular crystal model employing the variational extension of the Lang-Firsov unitary transformation. It was found that, in the low-temperature regime, only partially dressed small-polaron states may exist. With the rise of temperature, the system enters the metastability region, where partially dressed (light and mobile) and fully dressed (heavy and practically immobile) small-polaron states may exist simultaneously.

The influence of polaron-phonon interaction on absorption spectra in molecular crystals

AB  - We investigate theoretically the possible manifestation of the small-polaron effect in the IR absorption spectrum of the one-dimensional molecular crystals. Phonon-induced relaxation of small-polarons is taken into account explicitly on the microscopic level. It was found that it may have substantial influence on optical properties of molecular crystals. Consequently, the accounting of the polaron relaxation effects on the microscopic level is necessary for proper understanding of the optical spectra of molecular crystals. Their hitherto interpretation in terms of polaron model, based on the phenomenological treatment of the polaron damping, has been critically assessed on the basis of our results. AB  - The calculation of photothermal response detected by a photothermal microscope is presented. By using a technique based on Greens functions and integral transforms, a model for laser-induced temperature distribution functions has been derived. The mathematical method for solution of inverse problem is proposed. It suggests that photothermal microscopy, besides imaging subsurface of solids, has the potential for quantitative thermal analysis of varioussamples.

Infrared absorption spectra of molecular crystals: Possible evidence for small-polaron formation?

AB  - The temperature dependence of the position of the so-called anomalous band peaked at 1650 cm(-1) in the IR-absorption spectrum of crystalline acetanilide (ACN) is theoretically investigated within the small-polaron theory. Its pronounced shift towards the position of the normal band is predicted with the rise of temperature. Interpretation of the IR-absorption spectra in terms of small-polaron model has been critically assessed on the basis of these results. (c) 2008 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.
