AB - The effect of laser (532 nm line of Verdi G) heating during the Raman measurements, on partial decomposition of Bi12SiO20 single crystal, was addressed in this study. The degree of decomposition directly depends on the power density and duration of the laser treatment, which are registered by the phonon Raman spectra. After laser treatment, AFM measurements register additional small spherical islands on the surface. Analysis performed on irradiated and unirradiated samples showed significant changes in transmission spectra, X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern, Verdet constant, magneto-optical property, and absorption coefficient. The material obtained after laser irradiation can be described as specific nanocomposite consisting of bismuth oxide and silicon oxide-based nano-objects (dimensions below 15 nm in diameter), which are arranged in a matrix of Bi12SiO20.

AB - In the present work experimental study of the ZnO@ZnS core-shell nanostructure with an active layer obtained by conversion of zinc oxide powders with H2S is reported. Тhe prepared structures were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and far-infrared spectroscopy. Top surface optical phonon (TSO) in ZnO, characteristic for the cylindrical nano-objects, the surface optical phonon (SOP) mode of ZnS, and SOP modes in ZnO@ZnS core-shell nanostructure are registered. Local mode of oxygen in ZnS and gap mode of sulfur in ZnO are also registered. This result is due to the existence of an active layer in the space between ZnO core and ZnS shell, which is very important for the application of these materials as thermoelectrics. © 2020 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

AB - The polymer nanocomposite ZnS/Poly (methylmethacrylate) was prepared by the solution casting method and its structural and optical properties were investigated using XRD, SEM, TEM, HRTEM, and Raman spectroscopy. The basic material, ZnS, has the cubic structure and its crystallite size was estimated to be 2.3 nm, which implies that a strong confinement regime is in effect. Analysis of Raman spectra was performed using the fitting procedure based on effective medium theory. As a result, the surface optical phonon (SOP) mode was detected. It was found that the shape and position of the SOP mode depend on the type of the composite. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

AB - The phase changes of MnO nanoparticles under laser-induced heating have been studied. Previous confirmation of the existence of MnO phase was based on the X-ray diffraction measurements. Here, we report the experimental spectra of nonresonant Raman scattering in the range between 100 and 1,600cm(-1), for a sample irradiated with 8 different laser powers. The laser-induced heating has produced change in existing phases in sample, destruction of MnO phase, and creation of MnO2, Mn3O4, and MnOOH phases along with formation of Mn2+ on the sample surface. These phase changes have been confirmed by X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy measurements.

AB - In this paper we describe the synthesis and characterization of the YVO4:Eu3+ nanopowder. The material was prepared using simple solution combustion synthesis. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Raman and photoluminescence (PL) techniques were used to confirm and characterize the prepared material. The time resolved analysis of emission spectra was achieved by using the streak camera system. Beside luminescence lifetime of slow decayed transitions we also measured their rise time and lifetime of fast decayed transitions. We also determitied the excitation spectra of this nano material. Results of our analysis prove that YVO4:Eu3(+) nanopowder is appropriate material for various optoelectronic devices. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - High quality bismuth germanium oxide single crystals were irradiated by a femtosecond pulsed laser beam of increasing power. Analyses performed on irradiated and unirradiated samples showed significant changes in transmittance, transmission spectra, sample color, Raman spectra, X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern, Verdet constant, magneto-optical property, and absorption coefficient. After irradiation, the transmission spectra values increased whereas anisotropy detected in the transmission spectra of unirradiated samples disappeared. The change of color caused by irradiation was noticeable to the naked eye. The XRD measurements confirmed structural changes induced by laser irradiation, i.e., the laser-beam-incident side of the sample became almost amorphous, whereas the side opposite to the incident can be indexed to the Bi12GeO20 compound. Irradiation caused increase of Raman spectra peaks with the exception of crystal peaks of type E, which disappeared. The femtosecond pulsed laser irradiation can be used to improve bismuth germanium oxide single crystal optical properties. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

For this purpose, Cu-Al alloy with 0.4wt.% of Al was used. IO of sample serves in the first step of the processing as a means for attaining a fine dispersion of nanosized oxide particles in the metal matrix. Production technology continues with repeated application of severe plastic deformation (SPD) of the resulting metal-matrix composite to produce the bulk nanoscaled structural material. SPD was carried out with equal channel angular pressing (ECAP), which allowed that the material could be subjected to an intense plastic strain through simple shear. Microstructural characteristics of one phase and multiphase material was studied on internally oxidized Cu with 0.4wt.% of Al sample composed of one phase copper-aluminum solid solution in the core and fine dispersed oxide particles in the same matrix in the mantle region. In this manner AFM, X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy were used. Local structures in plastically deformed samples reflect presence of Cu, CuO, Cu2O, Cu4O3 or Al2O3 structural characteristics, depending on type of sample.

AB - The effect of Sn for Ti substitution on the crystal structure of a perovskite, barium titanate stannate (BTS), BaTi1-xSnxO3 for x = 0, 0.025, 0.05, 0.07, 0.10, 0.12, 0.15 and 0.20, was investigated. The powders were prepared by the conventional solid-state reaction technique. The structural investigations of the BTS powders were done at room temperature by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), selected-area electron diffraction (SAED) and Raman spectroscopy analyses. Rietveld refinement of XRD data indicates that gradual replacement of titanium by tin in BaTiO3 provokes a phase transition from tetragonal for 0 LT = x LT = 0.07 to cubic for x = 0.12, 0.15 and 0.20. The coexistence of tetragonal (P4mm) and cubic (Pm (3) over barm) crystal phases was established in powder with nominal composition BaTi0.9Sn0.1O3. The crystal phases determined by Rietveld refinement were confirmed by HRTEM and SAED analyses. The crystal structures of the BTS powders at short-range scale were studied by Raman spectroscopy, which shows tetragonal (P4mm) and a small fraction of orthorhombic (Pmm2) crystal phases for all the examined BTS powders, implying a lower local ordering when compared to the average symmetry.

AB - The effects induced by alpha-particles and laser beam irradiation in air atmosphere in uncured and cured bisbenzocyclobutene (BCB) 2 mu m thick films, spin-coated on glass/ITO surface have been investigated. alpha-Particle irradiation was done by means of a thin film Am-241 source (E-alpha = 5.486 MeV), up to the total fluence of about 5 x 10(10) particles/cm(2). Laser irradiation was performed by a Nd3+:YAG (lambda = 1.06 mu m) laser in the free generation and the Q-switch regime, using both focused and unfocused beams. Irradiation induced changes were investigated using Light and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), infrared (IR), Ultraviolet/visible (UV/vis) and Raman spectroscopy by inspecting several uncured and cured BCB films before and after irradiation. It has been found that both types of irradiation under investigated conditions have produced a novel phase in the material, which is not present either in the uncured or the cured BCB films. Possible implications of the observed effects on curing and degradation of BCB films have been discussed. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - The main challenge in the large-scale commercial applications of benzocyclobutene (BCB) dielectrics is to perform their curing rapidly and efficiently at low temperatures, and in the same time, to obtain large area, high quality, pinhole free dielectric thin films. For that purpose, we investigated numerous uncured and cured BCB films, approximately 2 mu m thick, spin-coated on glass/ITO surface, using optical and AFM microscopy, infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopy, and complete these results with appropriate Linear Combination of Atomic Orbitals (LCAO) calculations. That way we relate microscopic characteristics of the involved molecules, and macroscopic properties of the cured and uncured polymers, which is important for their practical applications.
