AB - It is well known that optical properties of Mg-Ni-H films can be tuned by hydrogen uptake from Mg-Ni-H and upload into Mg-Ni systems. In this work we show that modulation of optical properties of Mg-Ni-H can take place as a result of thermal processing in air as well. When reactively sputter deposited semiconducting Mg-Ni-H films are annealed at temperatures of 200 degrees C-300 degrees C in air, gradual band gap change from 1.6 to 2.04 eV occurs followed by change in optical appearance, from brown, to orange and, subsequently, to yellow. We investigate this phenomenon using optical and structural characterization tools, and link the changes to an atomic rearrangement and a structure reordering of the [NiH4]4-complex. The films are x-ray amorphous up to 280 degrees C, where above this temperature an increase in crystallite size and establishing of long-range order lead to a formation of the cubic crystalline phase of Mg2NiH4. Also, the results suggest that even though annealing was conducted in air, no oxidation or other changes in chemical composition of the bulk of the film occurred. Therefore, the band gap of this semiconductor can be tuned permanently by heat treatment, in the range from 1.6 to 2 eV.

AB - Processes taking place during hydrogen desorption from MgH2 thin films were investigated in as-prepared samples and samples modified by argon ion irradiation. Irradiation was used to produce well-defined defects with depth distribution. It was shown that the size, shape, and concentration of Mg nuclei formed during hydrogen desorption from MgH2 thin films depend on the characteristics and distribution of the induced defects. In as-prepared samples the shape of Mg nuclei is spherical, while in irradiated samples, it is highly irregular. Variations in sample colour were observed during hydrogen desorption and before the creation of Mg nuclei. DFT calculations showed that the observed variations in the optical properties of samples can be explained by changes in MgH2 electronic structure -the appearance of an H-vacancy band within the MgH2 energy gap. AB - Mg-Ni-H thin films were deposited by reactive magnetron sputtering. As-deposited samples were Mg-rich and annealed in air by two steps at T=220 and 290 degrees C in order to increase crystallinity. A reversible, thermochromic effect was detected when the crystalline yellow colour sample underwent a colour transition and changed its colour from yellow to red. The change in transmission spectra of the prepared thin films in visible range of spectra was induced by in situ heating setup. The continuous shifts of the transmission spectra at T=200 degrees C towards lower band gap was observed. Additionally, a photochromic effect was detected and confirmed by exposing the sample to visible light, as grey-coloured area appeared on the sample. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - The hydrogen desorption properties and kinetics of MgH2-VO2 composite prepared by mechanical milling of MgH2 and VO2 have been investigated. Structural characterization of produced nanocomposite was done by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), particle size analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The structure and morphology of the composite have been correlated with hydrogen desorption properties investigated by differential thermal analysis (DTA). It has been shown that short mechanical milling of nanostructured VO2 and MgH2 leads to decrease of hydrogen desorption temperature of MgH2 by 80 K. The mechanism of desorption has been changed from phase boundary reaction, spherical symmetry for untreated MgH2 to phase boundary reaction, cylindrical symmetry for the composite material. The activation energy for desorption has been reduced by adding VO2 ceramics as a catalyst. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd and, Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

AB - The influence of TiB2 and SiC ceramics on H-desorption kinetics from MgH2 based composites was investigated and correlated with the microstructure and morphology of the composites. The mechanism of desorption and the activation energy for desorption was investigated by applying non-isothermal kinetic analysis of thermodesorption spectra. It has been shown that TiB2 addition leads to significant decrease of the activation energy for desorption, while SiC addition has effect on the interface reaction between hydride and hydroxide. The mechanism of desorption change from Avrami-Erofeev n=3 for pure MgH2 to Avrami Erofeev n=4 for composite materials. The change from 3 to 4 can be due to the modification of the nucleation process or a change in the dimensionality of the growth. Those high values of n discard a diffusion control as a rate limiting step. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

abstract = "The influence of TiB2 and SiC ceramics on H-desorption kinetics from MgH2 based composites was investigated and correlated with the microstructure and morphology of the composites. All rights reserved.",

AB - The influence of structural changes caused by irradiation with different ions, their energies and fluences on sorption properties has been investigated. The irradiation has been done using B3+ and N3+ ions at 45 keV with ion fluence of 10(16) ion/cm(2) at the FAMA ion source at Vinca Institute of Nuclear Sciences in Belgrade. Morphology and microstructure of samples were analysed using XRD and particle size analysis, while estimation of penetration depth and deposition of defects were done by SRIM calculations. Hydrogen desorption properties and kinetics were evaluated from TPD measurements and numerical non-isothermal procedure. Results suggest that there are several mechanisms of desorption depending on defect concentration, their interaction and ordering. It has been also demonstrated that the changes in near-surface area play the crucial role in hydrogen desorption kinetics. It is confirmed that there is possibility to control the thermodynamic parameters of these systems by controlling vacancies depth profile and concentration.

AB - In attempt to improve desorption behaviour of MgH2, the influence of well-defined structural changes induced within a thin surface layer of MgH2 have been investigated. The defects were induced by 30 key C2+ ions irradiation using different fluencies ranging from 10(12)-10(16) ions/cm(2). The hydrogen desorption properties were investigated by thermal desorption spectroscopy analysis (TDS), while kinetics parameters were deduced using non-isothermal kinetic approach. The existence of multiple TDS peaks and different curve shapes indicate difference in desorption mechanism. To understand changes in the rate limiting step, shapes of all desorption peaks have been analyzed using different kinetic models. Regarding the irradiated sample, the function based on Avrami-Erofeev model with n = 4 gives the best fit over theta range from 0.3 to 0.8 while for untreated sample the best fit is obtained for Avrami-Erofeev model with n = 3. The change in mechanism can be attributed to the different way of nuclei growth. Copyright (C) 2013, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - The paper deals with the possibility to control aging of MgH2 by controlling the deposited energy, number and type of defects and their distribution in the near surface region using Ar8+, Xe8+, and B3+ ion irradiation. The evolution of the obtained phases was monitored using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy, laser scattering particle size distribution measurements and surface area analyses. Obtained results give the possibility to resolve between the material related (impurities, defects, strains) and the ambient induced component of aging.

AB - The hydrogen desorption (HD) properties of MgH2-CeO2 composite prepared by mechanically milling of MgH2 and cubic CeO2nano have been examined. Morphology and microstructure of composites have been studied by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), laser scattering analysis and correlated with desorption properties obtained by means of temperature programmed desorption (TPD). It has been shown that decrease of crystallite and particle size of the samples lead to significant lowering of desorption temperature. Further, the activation energy for desorption (E-A(des)) has been calculated using Kissinger equation. Obtained value of 60 +/- 10 kJ/mol indicates that the activation energy of hydrogen desorption is sufficiently decreased by the catalytic effect of vacant CeO2 structure. Consequently the surface activation of sample plays a major role in HD reaction. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

AB - This paper deals with non-isothermal kinetics models of hydrogen desorption from MgH2 altered by ion bombardment and stresses the importance of the MgH2 surface during its decomposition. In the case of argon-irradiated samples, where defects are induced in the near-surface region, the Avrami Erofeev mechanism with parameter n = 2 can be adopted while in the case of boron-irradiated samples, where defects are created deeper in the bulk, the desorption mechanism is the same with n = 3. The difference is possibly related to the concentration and good dispersion of defects in near-surface region in the samples. Copyright (C) 2012, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. AB - The influence of structural changes caused by irradiation with different ions, their energies and fluences on sorption properties has been investigated. Results suggest that there are several mechanisms of desorption depending on defect concentration, their interaction and ordering. It has been also demonstrated that the changes in near-surface area play the crucial role in hydrogen desorption kinetics. It is confirmed that there is a possibility to control the thermodynamic parameters by controlling vacancies concentration in the systems.

AB - To understand the influence of various crystallographic phases on hydrogen storage properties, ball milling of MgH2 with hexagonal (alpha) and cubic (beta) SiC have been performed. Structural characterization of all samples has been done by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, particle size analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Investigation of hydrogen desorption properties of prepared nanocomposites has been done using temperature programmed desorption (TPD) technique. Despite the results of structural and morphological characterization of obtained nanocomposites are very similar, TPD spectra show significant differences regarding existence of intermediate temperature peak. In the sample milled with hexagonal SiC this peak originates both from H-2 and H2O, while in the sample milled with cubic phase it only comes from H2O. Both samples exhibit low temperature H-2 peak at 385 K. (C) 2010 Professor T. Nejat Veziroglu. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
