AB - High quality bismuth germanium oxide single crystals were irradiated by a femtosecond pulsed laser beam of increasing power. Analyses performed on irradiated and unirradiated samples showed significant changes in transmittance, transmission spectra, sample color, Raman spectra, X-ray diffraction (XRD) pattern, Verdet constant, magneto-optical property, and absorption coefficient. After irradiation, the transmission spectra values increased whereas anisotropy detected in the transmission spectra of unirradiated samples disappeared. The change of color caused by irradiation was noticeable to the naked eye. The XRD measurements confirmed structural changes induced by laser irradiation, i.e., the laser-beam-incident side of the sample became almost amorphous, whereas the side opposite to the incident can be indexed to the Bi12GeO20 compound. Irradiation caused increase of Raman spectra peaks with the exception of crystal peaks of type E, which disappeared. The femtosecond pulsed laser irradiation can be used to improve bismuth germanium oxide single crystal optical properties. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - The solution combustion synthesis was used to prepare nanopowders of yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) and YAG doped with dysprosium ions, Dy3+, (YAG:Dy). The morphology, specific surface area, texture, and optical properties of the prepared materials were studied by the means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), nitrogen adsorption method, and far-infrared spectroscopy at room temperature in the spectral region between 80 and 600 cm(-1). It was established that all the examined samples were microporous. The Maxwell-Garnet formula was used to model dielectric function of YAG and YAG:Dy nanopowders as mixtures of homogenous spherical inclusions in air. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - A quadrupole with equally charged electrodes could be used to focus as well as to accelerate ion beams. The equality of electrode charges causes the driving electric field of this device to be qualitatively different from that of other devices with a similar structure composed of four rod-like electrodes. For the same reason, the area of strong field influence on the beam is shifted towards the entrance and exit of the device. Consequently, it is expected that the devices performance depends on the shapes of its entrance and exit regions. The device parameters whose influence is studied are aperture radius, gap size, and rod length. Performance of the device is quantified with accelerating and focusing potentials, which are obtained as integrals of axial and radial electric fields. These variables are further used to choose optimal values of the device parameters for desired operation of the device.

AB - The electrostatic quadrupole lens, quadrupole accelerator and square rainbow lens as well as radio frequency quadrupole accelerator all have similar structure with four rod-like electrodes. Unlike the last one, which is powered by the alternating voltage, the first three are electrostatic devices. Each two adjacent electrodes of a common electrostatic lens have equal magnitude and opposite signs of their electric potentials, whereas, electric potentials of rainbow lenss electrodes are all equal in magnitude as well as in sign. If powered by the appropriate radio frequency instead of a DC voltage, the rainbow lens transforms into an ion beam accelerator which could cost-effectively broaden the available energy range of low energy ion beam facilities.

AB - Dynamics of an ensemble of particles is often studied by tracking a large number of test particles from a chosen initial state to an adequately defined final state. Random distributions of particles over considered parameters are frequently used to describe an initial state of studied ensemble. Randomness of input data insures that there is no overlapping in test particles visualization; however, it hides the dependencies between various input and output parameters. If non-random, uniformly distributed input data is used, relationships between the input and output variables are revealed. Further, mapping of such an input into its output together with an appropriate interpolation scheme contains description of an output corresponding to any desired distribution of input data. A mapping of non-random uniformly distributed input into its output is combined with n-dimensional linear interpolation into a method for studying dynamics of an ensemble of particles. Advantages and efficiency of the method are illustrated using an ion beam interaction with two devices: the four parallel, equally spaced finite wires and the spiral inflector. The method is applicable if interactions between particles within an ensemble are negligible compared to other forces involved.

AB - A novel method for efficient analysis of ion beam acceleration in an isochronous cyclotron is proposed. Numerical simulation is used to perform multiple beam dynamics analyses on the conveniently chosen subsets of data; consequently, the total quantity of studied data is significantly reduced. The obtained results provide direct insight into beam behavior and quality of acceleration. Therefore, the analysis is not only efficient, but detailed and systematic as well. It is used to assess the impact of the accelerated orbit optimization to the enhancement of acceleration efficiency when study is extended from a single test ion to the complete ion beam consideration.

AB - Static magnetic fields (SMFs) are time independent fields whose intensity can be spatially dependent. This study investigates influence of subchronic continuous exposure to upward and downward directed SMF on hematological parameters and spleen cellularity in mice. The experiment is performed on the Northern hemisphere; consequently, the vertical component of geomagnetic field is directed downward. Male, Swiss-Webster, 6 weeks old mice were exposed to the vertically declining SMF. Mice were divided in three groups and continuously exposed or not exposed for 28 days to the SMF characterized by the averaged field of 16 mT and averaged field gradient of 10 mT/cm. Differently oriented SMF did not alter hemoglobin and hematocrit content among the groups. However, the groups exposed to the upward and downward fields had statistically significant higher levels of serum transferrin compared to the control. Moreover, spleen cellularity in animals in the downward group was significantly higher compared to the upward and control group. In addition, spleen lymphocytes in both of the exposed groups were significantly higher than in the control group. In contrast, spleen granulocytes in the exposed groups were significantly lower than in the control group. Significant decrease was also observed in brain and liver iron content with concomitant increase of iron in serum and spleen in exposed animals. Subchronic continuous exposure to 16 mT SMF caused lymphocyte and granulocyte redistribution between spleen and blood. This distribution is typical for stress induced hematological changes. These results suggest that observed changes were not due to an unspecific stress response, but that they were rather caused by specific adaptation to subchronic SMF exposure. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. AB - Accelerated ion beams are often extracted from a cyclotron by stripping some of ions electrons at the end of the acceleration process. Stripping extraction system is commonly designed and optimized using computer simulations of beam dynamics at a later stage of a cyclotron project. However, minor changes in the distance between the magnet poles are proven to cause large displacements of the optimal position of high-energy transport line. It is shown that simple analytical formulas give good prediction of the position and direction of beam exit after stripping extraction and are useful tool for preliminary facility layout planning.

AB - The stripping extraction system of a cyclotron is prized by the range and quality of beams it delivers. The gap size of a cyclotron magnet is one of the parameters which significantly influence the design as well as the output characteristics of the stripping extraction system. The vertical dimension of the beam as well as of the extraction system elements placed inside a vacuum chamber is limited by the magnet gap size. Beside this direct influence, the indirect effect of the magnet gap size on stripping extraction occurs through the magnetic field and its impact on the beam dynamics in the extraction region. The performance of the extraction system is optimized by the proper placement of the point of beam exit from the cyclotron. It is shown that the optimal position of the exit point strongly depends on the magnet gap size. The performance of the optimized stripping extraction system for a smaller gap size is found to be somewhat better.

AB - During the design of a cyclotron the time and attention dedicated to the injection and extraction of a beam usually overcome those devoted to the acceleration. However, the efficiency of the accelerating process largely contributes to the overall efficiency of the machine because the beam spends the most time in the accelerating region. A thorough and systematic study of the influence of beam parameters on the overall quality of acceleration is performed. The conditions for the optimal acceleration are determined and the method for defining the complete continuous sets of input parameters providing such acceleration is proposed.

AB - The fine shaping of a cyclotron magnet is usually conducted through an iterative procedure by matching the obtained and the required pre-calculated magnetic field. The quality of the obtained magnetic field is then evaluated by the closeness of the resulting ion gyration frequency to its required value. The method we propose is based directly on the gyration frequency adjustment; therefore, the pre-calculated magnetic field criterion and the empirical weight factors often needed for the corresponding shape estimate are avoided. The method is applicable to the angular width as well as the thickness of the magnet elements used in title shaping.

AB - t present, heavy ion beams from the electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) ion source in the Laboratory of Physics of the Vinca Institute of Nuclear Sciences, Belgrade, Serbia, are employed in a channel for surface modification of materials. The source and channel were commissioned in 1998, and have been used since that time by a number of user groups from the Vinca Institute and other scientific and educational institutions in Serbia. However, since the maximum extraction voltage of the source is +25 kV, sometimes the extracted beams do not have sufficiently high energies for such applications. Therefore, in order to solve this problem, we have decided to construct a new channel, to be used for deeper modification of materials. The beams obtained from the source will be post-accelerated by biasing the target to be irradiated to the negative potentials of down to - 100 W For example, we shall be able to bombard the target with the (132)Xe(24+) beam of the energy of up to 3 MeV, instead of up to 600 keV, in the case without the biasing system. An additional possibility will be to bias the target to the positive potentials of up to +25 kV and thus decelerate the beams extracted from the source down to the energies of about 1 keV. Consequently, one will be able to modify materials with the beams in a wide energy range, from similar to 1 to similar to 3 MeV, which is rarely met at similar experimental set-ups. It must be noted that changing the post-accelerated or decelerated beam energy in the new channel will be performed simply by adjusting the power supply of the biasing system, without any adjustments of the source and of the transport elements between the source and the interaction chamber. AB - Accurate magnetic fields are needed for defining the operation of a multipurpose cyclotron as well as for designing other parts of the machine, as an input parameter. The quality of an isochronous magnetic field is evaluated by the closeness of the obtained ion gyration frequency to its required value. The commonly used method of isochronous field calculation for sector focused cyclotrons was Gordons procedure. The incorporation of the gyration frequency criterion in isochronous field calculation has grown with the increase of the computer speed. We suggest a highly accurate method for the isochronous magnetic field calculation based on the gyration frequency adjustment.

The incorporation of the gyration frequency criterion in isochronous field calculation has grown with the increase of the computer speed. We suggest a highly accurate method for the isochronous magnetic field calculation based on the gyration frequency adjustment.",

AB - The VINCY Cyclotron is the main part of the TESLA Accelerator Installation. The diameter of the pole of this machine is 2000 mm. Its bending constant is 145 MeV while its focusing constant is 75 MeV. The radiofrequency system of the machine consists of two lambda/4-resonators with the eigenfrequency in the range from 17 to 31 MHz. Ions coming from a heavy ion source or a light ion source will be injected into the machine axially. They will be introduced into its median plane by a spiral inflector. Heavy ions accelerated in the machine will be extracted from it by a foil stripping system or by an electrostatic deflection system. Light ions will be extracted from it by the foil stripping system. The first programs of use of the VINCY Cyclotron are related to routine and experimental production of radioisotopes and radiopharmaceuticals, and to biomedical research with ion beams. The first beam extracted from the machine will be the proton beam of the energy of 22 MeV obtained from the H-2(+) beam extracted from the light ion source. This beam will be used first for production of radioisotope F-18 and radiopharmaceutical (18)FDG, to be employed for positron emission tomography.

AB - The VINCY Cyclotron is under construction at the Vinca Institute of Nuclear Sciences, Laboratory of Physics, Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro. One of the most difficult problems to solve is the magnetic field shaping in the central region of the machine in a wide range of field levels. The latest measurements showed a very large magnetic field depression in the central region. The following shimming elements are used for the field shaping in the central region: a central plug and a spacer ring between the sectors and the median pole plate. These elements should both release enough vertical space for the inflector and the RF electrodes and produce a field bump in the very center of the machine. Concerning this region, one has to mention the following facts: sectors are absent or very reduced, and the small gap between the sectors restricts remarkably the possibilities of producing a field bump. Therefore, the design of these elements is the most critical one. Optimization of the central plug gap affects both the vertical sparking probability and the beam dynamics at higher harmonic modes. The redesign of the magnetic structure of the central region relied solely on the detailed 3-dimensional calculations to speed up the experimental shimming procedure. The desired calculated magnetic field shapes, which include the influence of the plug, have been produced and confirmed by the particle tracing for the 3-field levels. The final tailoring of the field map will be performed by the measurements at the full-size magnet.

AB - The VINCY Cyclotron (VINca CYclotron) is a multipurpose machine intended to accelerate light as well as heavy ions. To extract heavy ions with low energy and light ions an extraction system with stripping foil is used. Heavy ions with high energy will be extracted by means of an electrostatic deflector. The former extraction system will be manufactured and used first. The proposed unidirectional stripping extraction system is the optimal balance between the placement of the extraction line and the required diversity and quality of the extracted beam. The available range of extraction directions is set by geometry limitations.

AB - Stripping extraction is broadly used for negative ion beam extraction from a cyclotron. During extraction, negative ions travel only through the pole edge magnetic field gradient. In addition to the pole edge region, positive ions, after stripping, can also pass more than once through regions of large sector edge magnetic field gradients. The ions are specified as positive or negative according to their sign during acceleration. Influence of the magnetic field gradients on the trajectory and envelopes of a stripped positive ion beam is shown. The consequences on the design of the stripping extraction system of a cyclotron are discussed.

AB - In a multipurpose cyclotron, it is convenient to use stripping extraction to extract selected positive ions in addition to the usual extraction by stripping of negative ions. The ions are specified as positive or negative according to the sign of their charge during acceleration. After stripping, positive ions travel not only through the pole edge magnetic field gradient, as is the case with negative ions, but can also pass more than once through regions of large sector edge magnetic field gradients. Influence of the magnetic field gradients on the trajectory of a stripped positive ion and on the extracted beam emittance is studied. It is shown that extraction efficiency depends on the position of the point of beam extraction from a cyclotron and on the ratio between ion charge after and before stripping. The position of the point of extraction also strongly affects the design parameters of the stripping extraction system. Extraction quality and design parameters cannot all be simultaneously optimized. The method of extraction system optimization is suggested and applied to the special case of the VINCY cyclotron.

AB - The spiral inflector (Root, M.S. Thesis, Ph.D. Thesis, University of British Columbia), as a part of the axial injection system of a cyclotron, is designed to inflect the ion beam with the introduction of a negligible energy spread. However, how close its real performance is to the analytical prediction depends on how close the operating conditions are to the assumed analytical stand-alone configuration. If the space in the central region of the cyclotron is limited, the electric field of the inflector and that of the electrodes of the radiofrequency (RF) system overlap, and the relevant zero-potential surface is quite complex. The dependence of the beam energy and time spreads after the inflector exit on the distance from the inflector exit was studied. The beam simulation results show that the beam energy spread decays with the distance from the inflector exit as expected, but that at 8 mm from the inflector exit it can still have the significant value of 0.67 keV (3% of the input energy). The beam time spread is of no interest if a continuous beam is to be produced. However, in the case of a bunched beam, even the smallest obtained value for the output time spread of 3.5 ns (10% of the period of the RF system) may have an important influence on the total efficiency of the machine. Our results demonstrate that both of these spreads need to be taken into account in the further beam simulations between the RF electrodes. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - We use a test particle simulation model based on gyro-averaged equations of motion to study the influence of oblique magnetospherically reflected (MR) whistlers on the near-loss-cone distribution function of radiation belt electrons. We find that MR whistlers originating in lightning can resonantly interact with radiation belt electrons over a broad range of L shells and precipitate higher energy electrons from lower L Shells. Electrons in the energy-range of 1 to 2.6 MeV are precipitated from L = 2, whereas from L = 4 the precipitated electron energy range is 150-220 keV. The precipitated differential electron flux, due to this interaction, is higher for higher L shells, and the maximum value ranges from Phi E-prec(1.11 MeV) 5.2 x 10(-4) electrons cm(-2) s(-1) keV(-1) at L = 2 to Phi E-prec(173 keV) = 4.6 x 10(-1) electrons cm(-2) s(-1) keV(-1) at L = 4. The lifetimes of radiation belt electrons in a given magnetic flux tube around the L shell on which the interaction takes place are found to be of the order of several days, comparable to lifetimes corresponding to electron loss induced by hiss, which was heretofore assumed to be the dominant loss mechanism [Lyons et al., 1972]. The minimum electron lifetimes vary from 2.4 days for 1.11 MeV electrons at L = 2 to 4.6 days for 173 keV electrons at L = 4.

abstract = "We use a test particle simulation model based on gyro-averaged equations of motion to study the influence of oblique magnetospherically reflected (MR) whistlers on the near-loss-cone distribution function of radiation belt electrons. The minimum electron lifetimes vary from 2.4 days for 1.11 MeV electrons at L = 2 to 4.6 days for 173 keV electrons at L = 4.",
