AB - This research presented, for the first time, the results of the successful application of the waste press sludges, WSLP (plant for lacquer and paint) and WSEP (powdery enamel plant), from a wastewater treatment plant generated during heating device production in the construction industry. The results of WSEP characterization and its influence on cement paste, mortar, and concrete properties showed that this material could be used as a cement replacement (with a maximum replacement amount of 20%) in producing mortar and concrete. Although waste WSLP sludge does not possess pozzolanic properties and does not meet the criteria prescribed by the standards for application in mortar and concrete due to its chemical inertness and fineness, as well as its extended setting time, it can be used as a replacement for stone filler or other powdered mineral admixture in the production of self-compacting concrete (SCC) in amounts up to 100%, with a maximum quantity of up to 100 kg/m3. The obtained results indicate that with the appropriate conversion, waste sludges, despite representing hazardous waste, can be used as safe products in the construction industry; i.e., the waste material can become a useful and valuable raw material by applying (respecting) all of the principles of the green economy.

AB - The possibility of using waste tailings produced by flotation in the lead and zinc mine of Grot, Serbia as a potential source of secondary mineral raw materials was examined. The aim of the research was primarily to carry out a detailed characterization in order to determine the dominant minerals, and, for the first time, to trace the changes occurring in the unit cells of the minerals present in that deposit. There was also a need to determine the exact proportions of the present mineral phases for their further application and utilization as natural resources in environmental protection. Samples were taken from three different sections of tailings: the crest of dam (JKB), outlet pipe of the flotation facility (JOF) and hydrocyclone overflow (JHC). Granulometric separation was performed to facilitate the extraction of certain minerals from waste. The results showed that all samples mainly contained quartz, clinochlore, calcite, albite, pyrite and biotite, but their ratios in each sample varied significantly. After characterization, samples were separated into different fractions and their mineralogical compositions were determined. Depending on the fraction, the mineralogical compositions also changed. Mineralogy and geochemical analysis indicate that waste tailings can be used as a secondary mineral raw materials source applicable in various industries.

AB - This study presents the characterization of waste vitreous enamel generated during the production process of heating devices in a factory in Southeast Europe. The sample was analyzed for chemical composition and concentrations of heavy metals using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), while the mineralogical composition was determined using X-ray diffraction (XRD). The functional groups were recorded using DRIFT spectroscopy, and the morphological and microstructural properties were investigated using FESEM measurements. The results showed that the sample waste vitreous enamel contains high levels of heavy metals and must be classified as hazardous waste. Quartz was found to be the most represented mineral in the sample, while oxides of metals Sb, Fe, Ti, and Cu appeared in the form of supporting minerals. The DRIFT spectra showed the presence of silicates, organic materials, and OH groups in Ti(IV)-OH crystal structure. The FESEM analysis revealed different sizes of particles mainly with polygonal forms and pronounced edges corresponding mostly to the silica and the alumina. These findings can contribute to the development of strategies for the safe and sustainable management of waste vitreous enamel.

AB - Due to the low CO2 emission of geopolymers compared to Portland cement, interest in their use as binding cement has increased in recent years. The main goal of this research is to relate the green and sustainable characteristics to the good mechanical and chemical properties of fly ashbased geopolymers. For those purposes, samples of different ratios of fly ash (FA) and metakaolin (MK) were prepared. Mineralogical characterization of the geopolymer samples conducted using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) showed that in the geopolymer synthesis reaction new amorphous phase was formed. Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFT) confirmed characteristic bands of Si-O and O-Si-O groups at 1045 cm–1 . Compressive strength analysis revealed that the optimal ratio of FA and MK is 50:50 and exhibits the highest value, while X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis revealed the total reduction of carbon content in the alkali activated geopolymer with optimal stoichiometry 50:50. The results of this research indicates the possibility to obtain a geopolymer material with almost complete absence of carbon, which implies further application as a material with very high environmental potential and zero carbon emission.

Produced powder was then subjected to sintering at 1550 ºC for 2 h in air. By SEM analysis, highly ordered microstructure of sintered sample was verified, while EDS method revealed that the sintered sample have chemical composition very similar to a nominal one. Afterwards, the ionic conductivity of the sintered sample was measured by EIS method. The highest value was obtained at 700 ºC, amounting to 1.92×10-1 Ω-1 cm-1 .",

AB - In the present paper, possible application of novel ceramic adhesives with implementation of waste sludge for bonding of heating devices constructions was studied. For a comparison, five different samples with increasing waste addition percentage were prepared and their performance as heat-resistant adhesives were evaluated in terms of chemical and thermostability as well as ecological safety. Based on ICP-OES analysis it was observed that only sample GC20 is not ecologically-safe due to high level of Cu+ concentration. By withstanding thermal treatment in the range of 200-800˚C for over 100h, all adhesive samples showed satisfactory thermostability. This research confirms the great potential of the studied materials for application as uncostly and eco-friendly adhesives for industrial purpose.

AB - Xanthates are considered to be the most widely used reagents in the flotation processing of sulphide ores, and therefore are largely present in flotation tailings as residuals. Since xanthates posses a certain toxicity and numerous negative effects from an ecological point of view, it is very important to find a suitable solution for their removal from aqueous solutions. In this study, the removal of xanthate from aqueous solutions was investigated using modified waste slag as promising adsorbent. For that purpose, two different starting concentrations of xanthates were selected, -20, and 90 mg/l. The obtained results showed that over 90% of residual xanthate from the aqueous solution can be removed in a period of 24 hours by using modified waste slag when its initial concentration is 20 mg/dm3 .

AB - Because of their widespread use as reagents in the flotation processing of sulphide ores, xanthates are largely found in tailings as residues. Regrettably, it is known that xanthates are not stable compounds and their decomposition generates carbon disulfide (CS2), a substance that is considered toxic. In this study, the chemical stability of xanthate was evaluated by UV/Vis spectroscopy, as a function of pH and time. The zero charge point of modified waste slag was also determined. The obtained results showed that the lowest degree of xanthate degradation is for the pH=10 and was 24.72%. For different concentrations of the KNO3 (0.1, 0.01, and 0.001 mol/dm3 ) the point of zero charge of the modified waste slag was 7.28, respectively

AB - In recent years, the interest of the scientific community has become focused on the integration of circular economy principles by eliminating end-of-life concepts and forming zero-waste strategies. The present paper suggests the possible application of innovative, eco-friendly, cost-effective, and highly efficient ceramic materials with the partial implementation of aluminosilicate-based waste in the form of wastewater sludge in advanced technology solutions. The specific objective was to demonstrate the effective utilization of the investigated waste in the production of refractory adhesives and/or sealants for Intermediate-Temperature Solid-Oxide Fuel Cells (IT-SOFCs). Different physical–mechanical and chemical properties were determined along with the performance of leaching tests, the thermal cycling procedure, and leakage tests in a single cell. Based on the maintenance of mechanical integrity after thermal cycling and satisfying crystal and microstructural stability after high-temperature treatment, it was concluded that the investigated materials may be considered promising candidates for application as heat-resistant adhesives for connecting components in heating systems. However, they were not found to be applicable as sealants for IT-SOFCs in raw form according to the failure of testing in a single cell. Still, requirements for this purpose could be met after certain modifications of the composition and synthesis methodology, which presents the major initiative for our further research in this field. © 2023 by the authors.

AB - This scientific study investigated the use of activated carbon obtained from black alder cone-like flowers for the adsorption of cyanobacteria cells and cyanotoxins from raw water collected from Aleksandrovac Lake. The material was prepared by carbonization and activation, and the water sample was analysed for microcystin and cylindrospermopsin using LC-MS. The results showed that the lake had a high level of Cyanobacteria, making it unsafe for recreational activities. After treatment with the activated carbon, the removal efficiency was 99,8 %, and with no cyanotoxins remaining. The dominant cyanobacteria species was Raphidiopsis raciborskii, which is a producer of cylindrospermopsin. The study demonstrated the potential of activated carbon for removing harmful cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins from water sources.

AB - We have used theoretical and experimental methods to investigate the octahedral tilting and related effects of Ca1-xGdxMnO3 (x=0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2) compound. Both methods have shown that orthorhombic-perovskite structure (space group Pnma) is the most stable form and according to Glazer's classification belongs to ab+ a - tilt system. Our bond valence calculations (BVC) have shown ten additional perovskite-related modifications of the equilibrium Ca1-xGdxMnO3 structure, and their stability has been investigated as function of Gd doping. We have further studied the influence of gadolinium amount on Mn-О bond angles and distances, tilting of MnO6 octahedra around all three axes and deformation due to the presence of Jahn-Teller distortion around Mn3+ cation, and calculated the amount of Mn3+ in the system. The infrared reflection spectra of Ca1-xGdxMnO3 samples confirmed XRD results that Ca1-xGdxMnO3 nanopowders are of Pnma-1 structure and that the tilting of octahedra are increased with Gd doping. The EPR spectra are in accordance with the assumption that EPR linewidth is Mn-O-Mn angle dependent. The studied samples showed that small octahedra tilting in these samples brought only a small change of the EPR linewidth.

AB - The main goal of this research is to obtain carbon material (by pyrolysis of biomass in the presence of inert gas N2) and then physical activation with CO2 obtained active carbon material and finally chemical treatment (using TEOS - tetraethyl orthosilicate) enabled the creation of highly porous bio-SiO2 ceramics. The results of experiments of pyrolysis at several high operating temperatures, activation of carbon material and with multicycle action using TEOS clearly showed the possibility of obtaining SiO2 nanostructures, after carbothermal reduction to 600 °C. Increasing the activation temperature and the duration of the activation process initiates the development of SiO2 particles within the porous structure. The final SiO2 powder product was analyzed by several different test methods. Structure and morphology were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Surface chemistry and functional surface groups were determined by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The obtained results are guidelines for further study and understanding of the properties of SiO2 and for the possibility of its application

AB - The aim of this research is to convert biowaste into carbon material and later into active carbon material. With that, we got two things in one go. We have received new material that is ready for various applications in various spheres of life and on the other hand we have removed waste and thus we have prevented additional pollution and preserved the environment. In our work, we used hydrothermal carbonization to obtain active carbon material from biowaste, exactly plane tree fruit. Various acids in different ratios were used as activators. The effects of the chemical agent on the structure of the obtained material were investigated. It was noticed that the process parameter pH value of the initial solution affects the structure, morphology and properties of the obtained final product, active carbon material. The values of specific surfaces of the treated sample increase by lowering the pH value. Characterization of the obtained activated carbon material was performed by nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Functional surface groups were determined by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR).

AB - Activated carbons were successfully prepared using biowaste as a cheap and renewable raw material. Carbonization was performed on biomass first under nitrogen N2 atmosphere at 850ºC, and then were physical activated at different temperatures and different times of activation in atmosphere of carbon dioxide CO2. The influence of temperature and time of activation on physical, structural and morphological properties was studied by XRD, Raman spectroscopy, FTIR, BET, SEM analysis. The increase of temperature and activation time leads to the increase of specific surface area of carbon material. The charge storage ability was evaluated and systematically studied by means of Cyclic Voltammetry and Impedance method. The specific discharge capacitance of activate carbon materials in different pH–aqueous electrolytes (KOH, Na2SO4 and H2SO4), increases with the surface area, indicating that the double layer charging is controlled primarily by the development of surface porosity. The active carbon material with the most developed porosity maintained a high capacitance of 110.06 Fg-1 in KOH, 80.62 Fg-1 in Na2SO4 and 126.9 Fg-1 in H2SO4, at a very high scan rate of 300 mVs-1 . The micro/mesoporosity, depending on the type of aqueous electrolyte, was found to control not only the specific capacitance of materials, but also the hydrogen storage, C–H bonding and the relaxation time of adsorption.

AB - Nanocrystalline powders of Ca1-xGdxMnO3 (x=0.05, 0.1, 0.15, and 0.2) have been synthesized by the modified glycine nitrate procedure and pressed into pellets that served as green bodies for a systematic investigation on their structural and microstructural properties [1]. Dilatometric measurements were performed in order to confirm the optimal sintering temperature. Dilatometric curves, besides sintering, are recording superimposed phase transition and linear expansion. Using a dilatometric curve, three temperatures were determined at which the examined sample shows significant changes. At 1055 °C–1194 °C certain second order phase transition is evident, at 1365 °C–1409 °C intensive nitrogen oxide extrusion, and in duration of 86 min at 877 °C heating ramp thorough isothermal holding at 1410 °C until 158 min cooling schedule at 1331 °C sintering is performed. Vickers hardness values were obtained based on the change in the surface area of the diamond pyramid. The results indicate that the hardness of the Ca1-xGdxMnO3 system (x = 0.05; 0.1; 0.15; 0.2) is not conditioned by the amount of doped gadolinium.

AB - The impact of urbanization and modern agricultural practice has led to accelerated eutrophication of aquatic ecosystems, which has resulted in the massive development of cyanobacteria. Very often, in response to various environmental influences, cyanobacteria produce potentially car-cinogenic cyanotoxins. Long-term human exposure to cyanotoxins, through drinking water as well as recreational water (i.e., rivers or lakes), can cause serious health consequences. In order to overcome this problem, this paper presents the synthesis of completely new activated carbons and their potential application in contaminated water treatment. The synthesis and characterization of new active carbon materials obtained from waste biomass, date-palm leaf stalks (P_AC) and black alder cone-like flowers (A_AC) of reliable physical and chemical characteristics were presented in this article. The commercial activated carbon (C_AC) was also examined for the purpose of comparisons with the obtained materials. The detailed characterization of materials was carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), low-temperature N2 physisorption, and Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). Preliminary analyzes of the adsorption capacities of all activated carbon materials were conducted on water samples from Aleksandrovac Lake (Southern part of Serbia), as a eutrophic lake, in order to remove Cyanobacteria from water. The results after 24 h of filtration showed removal efficiencies for P_AC, A_AC, and C_AC of 99.99%, 99.99% and 89.79%, respectively.

AB - Solving problems with hazardous waste materials is of crucial importance today. In the presented study, the application of waste vitreous enamel as a cement replacement up to 30% in mortar and concrete production was investigated. The chemical and physical-chemical characterization of the starting material was performed, as well as a leaching test and physical-mechanical characterization of mortar and concrete mixes. Obtained results showed that, due to its chemical composition, the vitreous enamel used must be classified as hazardous waste. At the same time, it possesses pozzolanic properties and satisfies minimal criteria for use as a cement replacement. Testing mortars and concrete mixes indicate that waste vitreous enamel can be applied as a construction material for cement replacement in the maximal amount of 20%. The leaching test was performed in accordance with international standard EN 12457-2 on hardened mortar with a maximal cement replacement of 20%. The results showed that there was no significant release of toxic elements, i.e., that the practical application of hazardous waste vitreous enamel in the construction industry may be fully in line with environmental standards.

AB - In recent years geopolymers have shown increased interest as binders with low CO2 emission compared to Portland cement. The main goal of this research is focused on connecting green and sustainable characteristics with the mechanical and chemical properties of fly ash-based geopolymer. The samples of different ratios of fly ash (FA) and metakaolin (MK) were prepared. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) showed that in the geopolymer synthesis reaction a new amorphous phase was formed. Diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFT) confirmed characteristic bands of the Si-O and O-Si-O groups at 1045 cm−1. Compressive strength analysis revealed that the optimal ratio of FA and MK is 50:50 and exhibits the highest value. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis revealed the total reduction of carbon content in the alkali-activated geopolymer with the optimal stoichiometry of 50:50. This indicates the possibility of obtaining a geopolymer material with an almost complete absence of carbon, which implies further application as a material with a very high environmental potential and of zero carbon emissions.

AB - Adsorption is one of the well-known methods in the removal of various pollutants from water bodies. The activated carbon material has great potential in water purification as an adsorbent. In process of adsorption various pollutants from water, such as different type of pathogens and toxins that can be potential risk for human health, can be effectively removed by activated carbon. The aim of this study is detail characterization of newly synthesized activated carbon materials from biowaste. Dried date palm leaf stalk (Phoenix dactylifera L.) and black alder cone-like flowers (Alnus glutinosa L.) have been chosen as bio-waste precursors. The activated carbon materials were firstly carbonized in atmosphere of N2 and then activated in atmosphere of CO2. Both processes are performed at 750 °C during 1 h. The yields of materials were 36.5 % and 24.7 % made of datepalm leaf stalk (P_AC) and black alder cone-like (A_AC) flowers, respectively. The commercial activated carbon has been characterized in order to compare with synthesized materials. For structural and chemical properties of materials was characterized in detail by: X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), low temperature N2 physisorption and Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). According to those results, materials obtained from date palm leaf stalk and black alder fruits show that newly synthesized materials have properties of an adsorbent with good potential for usage in water purification from different types of pollutants.

AB - In order to avoid environmental issues considering disposal of great volumes of waste generated from the mining industry processes there is a tendency among researchers to find potential use of these harmful by-products. Waste slag is one such waste product since the content of different undesirable elements like cadmium, arsenic, zinc and other heavy metals may be at a level that can potentially endanger the environment and cause public health issues. On the other hand, tailings generated in the flotation facilities are also considered to be environmentally harmful because of different residual organic reagents that are applied in the process. As it is well-known, xanthates are the most widely used reagents in flotation processing of the sulfide ores, and, therefore largely present in tailings. Besides, xanthates are reported to pose toxicity and numerous negative impacts from the ecological point of view. That explains why it is of great importance to find efficient and low-cost routes for minimizing their remaining levels in tailings, therefore exposure to environment. In this study, xanthate absorption by using of the waste slag as adsorbent was investigated. For that purpose, three different starting concentrations of xanthates were selected, -20, 50 and 90 mg/l. The mass of the absorbent i.e. waste slag put into 50 ml of xanthate solution amounted to 0.01 g. Experiment was conducted on room temperature while pH value was set to be 10. The percentage of the total xanthates content absorbed was evaluated after the period of 24 h. Obtained results indicated that potential reuse of the waste slag for the removal of xanthates, may be justified and after 24 h, 98 %, 58 % and 62 % of the xanthates were adsorbed, respectively. However, further examination is needed in terms of better understanding of xanthate absorption mechanisms and improvement of waste slag absorption efficiency.

AB - In the present paper, possible application of novel concept synthesis method of ceramic composite sealants (CCS) with implementation of alumosilicate-based waste material in intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFC) was investigated. Besides two different basic variants of alumina matrix nanocomposites stabilized by rare earths and carbon materials (CCS-RE and CCS-C), for this purpose two additional sealant compositions with 5 wt.% addition of waste material (CCS-RE5 and CCS-C5) were designated for a comparative study. The aim of this research was to characterize the waste material, as well as the starting components used for developing ceramic composites through various characterization techniques. Analytical procedures for determining chemical composition with focus on heavy metal content in waste was performed in order to ensure the waste is ecologically acceptable to be used as an additive. Besides, the crystalline phase composition of the raw materials as well as of the sealant compositions was determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Finally, obtained results revealed that this research may provide the possible solution of forming a cost-effective, environmentally-friendly and high-efficient ceramic sealants for application in IT-SOFC by incorporating waste materials in its composition, without significant negative effects on its performance and main properties.

AB - The presented study is a continuation of the research with the aim of finding a useful
value of hazardous waste slag generated by the combustion of lignite in heating plants and its
application in the construction industry. The different amounts of cement (10%, 15%, 20% and
25%) were replaced with waste slag and silica fumes in mortars and concrete production. Detailed
physical–mechanical characterization was performed on the mortar and concrete samples according
to standard procedures. Test results indicated that the replacement of cement with slag and silica
fumes reduces the physical and mechanical properties of mortar and concrete, but cement composites
retained the required structural properties. If 15–20% is considered an acceptable level of compressive
strength decrease, then it can be concluded that waste slag can be implemented in practice and be
used as a construction material, with cement replacement in the maximal amount of 20% (17.8%
of slag and 2.2% of silica fumes). On hardened mortar samples with maximal possible cement
replacement (20%), physical–chemical characterizations were performed and included X-ray and
infrared spectrophotometry, scanning electron microscopy, and thermal analysis. Results showed the
absence of new phases and the presence of only those which were characteristic for starting samples,
predominantly portlandite, quartz, calcite and calcium silicate-oxide

application in the construction industry.
Results showed the
absence of new phases and the presence of only those which were characteristic for starting samples,
predominantly portlandite, quartz, calcite and calcium silicate-oxide",

AB - In the present paper, possible application of novel concept synthesis method of glass-ceramic sealant with implementation of alumosilicate-based waste material in intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFC) was investigated. Besides basic components for glass-ceramic sealant (sample GC0), for this purpose four additional sealant compositions with certain waste content, designated as GC1, GC2, GC3, GC4, were prepared for a comparative study. Waste was added in the basic sealant composition in such a way that certain percent of alumosilicate clay was substituted with alumosilicate-based waste material, with proper amount of water as a solvent. Waste share in compositions was 5, 10, 15 and 20% of total amout of alumosilicate clay as a replacement, respectively.A total of five different joint specimens were assembled by placing a sealant paste of 10mm thickness between two bricks to form brick/glass–ceramic/brick sandwich specimens appropriate for further heat treatments. Such formed ‘green’ joints were initially air-dried for 24h at room temperature, which was required for solvent to evaporate and cause initial bonding. Heating cycle in the period of four weeks was carried out in a chamber furnace. First day samples were heated to 200 ̊C for 2 h. Each day heating temperature was raised for 100 °C while dwelling time was prolonged for one hour, so by the end of the first week samples were heated to 600 °C for 6 hours. Next three weeks annealing of the samples was performed at 600 °C for 6 hours, 700 °C for 7 hours and 800 °C for 8 h, respectively, after what the thermal cycle was completed. The heating rate of the furnace at each heating step in the given joining process was 5 °C/min,while cooling was at natural speed. Mentioned firing temperatures were selected in accordance to common operating temperature range of IT-SOFC so as to simulate real working conditions. After the completion of the cycle, it was observed that all variants of the sealant withstood high temperatures without significant cracks or damage. Moreover, after detailed chemical, physical, mechanical and optical properties examination it was determined that compositions remained unaltered, which clearly indicates to their stability and reliability that is required for their application as sealants for IT-SOFC components. In addition, this research shows the possibility of forming a cost-effective, environmentally-friendly and high- efficient sealant for application in IT-SOFC by incorporating waste materials in its composition, without significant negative effects on its performance and main properties.
