AB - To enhance endodontics, the search for new antibacterials that can improve infected tooth root canal treatment is ongoing. As potent antibacterial and antibiofilm agents, essential oils (EOs) have been suggested as novel endodontic materials. Several studies indicate that EO-based irrigants and medicaments show promising reductive potential against the most important intracanal pathogen, Enterococcus faecalis, and notably contribute to intracanal biofilm eradication. In terms of additional benefits that EO-based endodontic materials can provide, their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential are also important, but they have only scarcely been explored in research. Investigations into the benefits of EO-based endodontic materials together with their biocompatibility are needed. The results presented in this review strongly encourage further research on this topic.

AB - The presented study is a continuation of the research with the aim of finding a useful
value of hazardous waste slag generated by the combustion of lignite in heating plants and its
application in the construction industry. The different amounts of cement (10%, 15%, 20% and
25%) were replaced with waste slag and silica fumes in mortars and concrete production. Detailed
physical–mechanical characterization was performed on the mortar and concrete samples according
to standard procedures. Test results indicated that the replacement of cement with slag and silica
fumes reduces the physical and mechanical properties of mortar and concrete, but cement composites
retained the required structural properties. If 15–20% is considered an acceptable level of compressive
strength decrease, then it can be concluded that waste slag can be implemented in practice and be
used as a construction material, with cement replacement in the maximal amount of 20% (17.8%
of slag and 2.2% of silica fumes). On hardened mortar samples with maximal possible cement
replacement (20%), physical–chemical characterizations were performed and included X-ray and
infrared spectrophotometry, scanning electron microscopy, and thermal analysis. Results showed the
absence of new phases and the presence of only those which were characteristic for starting samples,
predominantly portlandite, quartz, calcite and calcium silicate-oxide

AB - In this paper influence of alginate encapsulation on point of zero charge (pH pzc ) and thermodynamic properties of the natural and Fe(III)- modified zeolite were investigated. The pH pzc was determined by using 0.1000 g of the samples and 50 cm 3 of the solution containing KNO 3 in concentrations of 0.0001-0.01 mol/dm 3 for initial pH (pH i ) in range between 2 and 12. The obtained pH pzc were 6.2 for natural (NZA) and 6.5 for modified zeolite encapsulated with alginate (FeA). Influence of the temperature on the adsorption of lead was investigated for different initial lead ions concentrations (180-3200 mgPb 2+ /dm 3 ) and temperatures of 30, 40 and 60 o C. For both adsorbents, adsorption of lead ions increased with increasing its initial concentration as well as with increasing of the temperature. Also, the best fits of the experimental data were obtained by Freundlich isotherm. The temperature had positive influence adsorption and removal of lead ions increased with increasing its initial concentration as well as with increasing of the temperature. The thermodynamic parameters (the standard free energy of adsorption, standard enthalpy and standard entropy) were also determined. The results showed that lead ions removal from aqueous solutions is much favourable for FeA then NZA. © 2019 The Authors.

AB - The aim of this study was to investigate the biocompatibility of nanostructured materials based on highly active calcium silicates mixed with different radiocontrast agents in comparison to MTA+ using in vitro and in vivo model. Morphology of materials’ samples was analyzed using SEM while the phase compositions were identified by XRD. pH values of materials’ suspensions were conducted by pH-meter. The cytotoxicity of materials’ solutions was tested by MTT test (100, 50, 25 and 12.5 mg/ml). LDH and 3H-thymidine assay were utilized for biocompatibility investigations of materials’ eluates (24 h, 7 day and 21 day). Eighteen Guinea pigs were used for intramuscular implantation, as teflon tubes with freshly prepared materials were placed into intramuscular pockets. All samples were composed of round and needle-like particles equally distributed with Ca/Si ratio ~2.7 at%, with the presence of hydrated calcium silicate phases. The pH values of ALBO-MPCA1 and ALBO-MPCA2 were high alkaline, while in case of MTA+ they were lower and continuously declined (p < 0.05). Investigated materials didn’t exhibit dose-dependent effect on metabolic activity of L929 cells (p > 0.05). Significant differences in the percentage of cytotoxicity between diluted and undiluted extracts between all tested materials after 24 h and 7 day were noticed (p < 0.05). Increase in L929 cells proliferation was noticed in case of undiluted eluates of ALBO-MPCA1 and ALBO-MPCA2 after 7 day (p < 0.05). There were no statistically significant differences in the intensity of inflammatory response between investigated materials and control group after 60 day (p > 0.05). Evaluation of biocompatibility of both ALBO-MPCA1 and ALBO-MPCA2 indicate their potential clinical use. AB - In present paper, the influence of the initial pH and concentration of Pb2+ on its adsorption by the natural (NZA) and Fe(III)-modified zeolite-alginate beads (FeA) was studied. Results showed that modification of the starting materials have a positive effect on their adsorption capacities (102 and 136 mg/g for the NZA and FeA, respectively). After encapsulation, the mechanism of lead adsorption by both adsorbents was changed and ion exchange dominates. The best adsorption was achieved for initial pH GT 3.8. Cation exchange capacity, structural properties, and hydrophobicity of samples were also determined, and the presence of the alginate has no significant influence on investigated properties of samples. Experiments on wastewater from tailings of lead and zinc mine Grot, Serbia, showed that after treatment with both adsorbents, the content of the most abundant heavy metals (Pb, Zn, Hg, and Mn) significantly decreased.

AB - Alumina/YAG composites (AYX_t) with high relative density (99.2 %TD) were successfully obtained by mixing commercial alumina powder with different volume fractions of yttrium aluminium garnet (Y3Al5O12-YAG; 7, 14, 21 and 28). YAG was synthetized by nitrate glycine reaction in the form of precursor powder. Polycrystalline YAG powder was obtained by calcination at 950 degrees C for 2 h. Additionally, obtained compositions were characterized by XRD, SEM, EDX and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. By XRPD analysis was found that the particle size of YAG powders lies in the nanometric range (being lower than 35 nm). By SEM microphotographs of composites were confirmed the formation of a conductive path consisting from mutually interconnected YAG particles. This was confirmed by the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The highest electrical conductivity of grain (K-g) and grain boundary (K-gb) at 700 degrees C amounted to 2.22x10(-2) ohm(-1)cm(-1) and 9.44x10(-3) ohm(-1) cm(-1), respectively, was measured in the composite containing 21 vol% of YAG.

abstract = "Alumina/YAG composites (AYX_t) with high relative density (99.2 %TD) were successfully obtained by mixing commercial alumina powder with different volume fractions of yttrium aluminium garnet (Y3Al5O12-YAG; 7, 14, 21 and 28). The highest electrical conductivity of grain (K-g) and grain boundary (K-gb) at 700 degrees C amounted to 2.22x10(-2) ohm(-1)cm(-1) and 9.44x10(-3) ohm(-1) cm(-1), respectively, was measured in the composite containing 21 vol% of YAG.",

AB - In this work, plane tree seed-based activated carbons (AC) were used for possible application in carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) technology. After carbonization process at 850 degrees C, resulting preliminary ACs were activated at various temperatures. The high levels of the growth in basal planes of graphite structure in carbonized sample were detected. Also, it was found that the samples activated at 750 and 850 degrees C have a lower graphitization degree and contained substantially disordered sections and defects, which are characteristic of typical amorphous porous carbons. Process modeling has shown that the CO2 sorption can be described by multi-parametric continuous distributed reactivity model. Analysis showed the occurrence of gas reduction process, involving gibberellic acid and coenzymes which can produce the methane gas. The highly ordered arrangement of the gas molecules on the carbons was assumed. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - Calcium hydroxyapatite (CHA), as one of the most important ceramic materials in bone tissue engineering, was used as a delivery system for tigecycline, a potential antibiotic in treatment of osteomyelitis. Tigecycline, in a solid state, was mixed with CHA powder and the obtained mixture was compressed into tablets. The release of tigecycline from these tablets in a pH 7.4 phosphate-buffered saline solution was measured by a UV-vis spectrophotometer at 37 degrees C. The total dose of tigecycline was released for 5 to 30 days, depending on the applied pressure and drug concentration. A new drug release mechanism that determines the relationship between pore sizes and drug release rate is proposed. It explains and quantifies the drug release kinetics based on pore sizes and pore size distribution. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

AB - The Pb-ceramic was syntheses by process of thermally induced phase transformation of Pb-exchange LTA and FAU zeolites. Both frameworks collapse into amorphous intermediate products after heating between 600 and 650 o C. Prolonged heating of the intermediate product over 1100o C results directly in formation of a disorder Pb feldsparLTA [a =8.4171(4) Å, b=13.0532(4) Å, c=7.1722(4) Å, β=115.35(3)°] and Pb-feldsparFAU [a=8.426(4) Å, b=13.0608(4) Å, c=7.1773(4) Å, β=115.36(3)°] phase. The phase conversions in the temperature range investigated were followed by thermal (DTA/TGA), XRPD, and SEM/EDS analyses. The results showed that the Pbceramic could be obtained by process of thermally induced phase transformation of Pbexchange zeolites.

AB - In this paper, the kinetics and sintering mechanism of hydro-thermally synthesized hydroxyapatite in the temperature range 900-1100 degrees C are presented. It was found that at 900 degrees C, the sintering process is very slow, whereas at 1000, 1050, and 1100 degrees C is much faster, caused by activated sintering with liquid phase/phase of solution on spots with concentrated material impurity and the formation of reaction/polyeutectic mixtures dominates. The activation energies of sintering were also determined. At all the investigated sintering temperatures, an approximate value of 90 kJ mol(-1) was found. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - A new approach to the two-level design and self-assembling of Me(x)SiO(y) (Me = Gd, Y and Ca or their mixtures) nano-powders from SiO(2) sols is described. The nanostructure design of various optical active materials based on different compounds of Me(x)Sio(y) is discussed. These particles were formed by the combination of hydrothermal synthesis and ultrasound spray pyrolysis. The morphology and structural design of the particles and sub-particles are defined by their synthesis procedure and processing parameters. The mean particle size and size distribution of all the Me(x)SiO(y) based compounds were determined by SEM analysis. These results were compared with the particle diameter evaluated from the theoretical model of the breaking-up of capillary waves. For all the synthesized powders, the obtained results indicate the possibility of a rigorous design of the structure of the particles throughout their entire hierarchy. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V.
