AB - Carbonaceous solid-phase extraction (SPE) sorbent, efficient in isolation and enrichment of multiclass pesticides and pharmaceuticals from water, was synthesized starting from cheap waste beech sawdust and using KOH as the activated agent. The first step in carbon material preparation was hydrothermal carbonization of the waste beech sawdust. Following hydrothermal treatment, the obtained material was activated, using different amounts of KOH. It was found that applied activation leads to changes in material structure, an increase in specific surface area, and a decrease in the number of surface oxygen groups compared to carbonized sample. SPE procedure of multiclass pesticides and pharmaceuticals from water using activated carbonized beech sawdust (AcSD) was optimized by selecting the appropriate elution solvents, the sample pH, and the sample volume to obtain the highest enrichment efficiency. The optimized SPE procedure was applied for water analysis using different AcSD samples as a sorbent for analyte preconcentration. Activated carbon sorbent, obtained with the highest amount of KOH, showed the highest recoveries regarding the most analytes, which were comparable with the recoveries obtained by commercial cartridges. © 2022 Serbian Chemical Society.
AB - In this study, carbon cryogel was used as solid-phase extraction sorbent for the extraction of estrogenic hormones (estrone, 17β-estradiol, and 17α-ethinylestradiol) from water solution.
The solid-phase extraction (SPE) method was optimized by choosing an appropriate mass of the sorbent, volume, and initial pH of estrogenic hormone water solution, as well as by choosing an appropriate organic solvent. The concentration of tested hormones after extraction was measured by liquid
chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. Based on the obtained hormone recoveries, the following optimal conditions of the SPE procedure were chosen: 100 cm3
of hormone water
solution at initial pH adjusted to 7, 20 mg of the sorbent, the methanol-dichloromethane mixture was
used for hormone elution. Recoveries obtained under the optimal conditions ranged from 77 % for
estrone, to 86 % for 17β-estradiol, with relative standard deviation from 7,4 to 18 %.

AB - This paper explores the applicability of unmodified and chemically modified activated carbon cloths (ACCs) for the removal of estrone, 17 beta-estradiol, and 17 alpha-ethinylestradiol from water. In order to examine the influence of surface properties on hormone adsorption, chemical modification of ACCs with HNO3, HCl, or KOH was employed. Applied treatments increased the specific surface area and changed the content of oxygen functional groups. Increased content of acidic surface oxygen functionalities enhanced adsorption efficiency up to 30 % and had a more dominant influence on adsorption capacity than specific surface area. Adsorption of estrone, 17 beta-estradiol, and 17 alpha-ethinylestradiol followed pseudo-second-order kinetic model, while the equilibrium adsorption data fitted well with the Freundlich isotherm model. Calculated mean sorption energy values of 1.4475, 1.3387, and 1.0541 kJ/mol, for E1, E2, and EE2 respectively, indicated that removal of selected hormones was dominated by physisorption mechanism. Obtained Langmuir adsorption capacities, 12.34, 12.66, and 11.11 mg/g for estrone, 17 beta-estradiol, and 17 alpha-ethinylestradiol, respectively, as well as convenience of manipulation, recommend activated carbon cloth modified with HNO3 as an efficient adsorbent for removing estrogen hormones from the water.

materije, mogu izazivati niz opasnih i često neizlečivih bolesti. Iz tog razloga, istraživači
godinama u nazad razvijaju nove i usavršavaju postojeće tehnike za prečišćavanje otpadnih
voda od ovih zagađujućih materija [1]. Za prečišćavanje vode zagađene teškim metalima
mogu se koristiti različite metode: hemijska precipitacija, elektrohemijski tretmani, filtracija,
reverzna osmoza, jonska izmena, membranski procesi, adsorpcija.
desorpcionim procesom, predstavlja veoma efektivnu i ekonomičnu metodu.
vode. Karbon kriogel (CC) predstavlja ugljenični materijal razvijene mezoporoznosti čije
se adsorpcione karakteristike mogu poboljšati optimizacijom i kontrolisanjem parametara
dobijanja.
promena u specifičnoj površini i poroznosti materijala. S druge strane, ovim postupkom
dolazi do izmene površinske hemije materijala, uvođenjem novih, i povećanjem broja
Izmene u hemiji površine dovode i do
izmena adsorpcionih karakteristika karbon kriogela.
modifikovanog karbon kriogela dovodi do višestrukog povećanja adsorpcionog kapaciteta.

AB - TiO2/carbon composite (TiO2/HTC), synthesized by hydrothermal carbonization, was characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, nitrogen adsorption–desorption isotherms and X-ray diffraction. The possibility of using TiO2/HTC as photocatalysts for UV and visible light assisted degradation of methylene blue inaqueous solution was examined. It was found that carbon presence in TiO2/HTC leads to the higher porosity and increase in the share of photocatalytically active anatase phase. Compared to the hydrothermally synthesized TiO2, TiO2/HTC showed the superior photocatalytic activity under UV irradiation. In addition, TiO2/HTC show high recycling ability with degradation ratio of methylene blue higher than 81% after five cycles. Also, TiO2/HTC is expected to be a promising candidate for photocatalytic processes using visible light.

AB - The new and simple approach for deposition of catalytically active TiO2 coating on carbon monolith (CM) carrier was presented. CM photocatalysts were impregnated with TiO2 using titanium solution and thermal treatment, and their photocatalytic activity was investigated in the process of methylene blue (MB) photodegradation. For the purpose of comparison, CM composite photocatalysts were prepared by dip-coating method, which implies binder usage. The presence of TiO2 on CM carrier was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The sorption characteristics of CM and the role of adsorption in the overall process of MB removal were evaluated through amount of surface oxygen groups obtained by temperature-programmed desorption and specific surface area determined by BET method. CM has shown good adsorption properties toward MB due to high amount of surface oxygen groups and relatively high specific surface area. It was concluded that photocatalytic activity increases with CM disc thickness due to increase of MB adsorption and amount of deposited TiO2. Good photocatalytic activity achieved for samples obtained by thermal treatment is the result of better accessibility of MB solution to the TiO2 particles induced by binder absence.

AB - Structural and surface characterization of pristine and boron doped
carbonized hydrothermal carbons (CHTC) is reported. Boron was
introduced into glucose precursor solution with concentration of 0.2% and
1%. Following hydrothermal treatment, samples were carbonized to 1000oC
and examined by Raman spectroscopy and temperature programmed
desorption. Characterization of obtained samples as material for carbon
paste electrode was performed by cyclic voltammetry measurements of the
Fe (CN)6
3-/4- redox couple. Structural analysis showed that lower boron
content in precursor solution induced structure ordering, while higher
amount of boron caused structural disorder of CHTC sample. Boron
presence in CHTC samples reduced number of surface active sites for
oxygen adsorption and consequently improved their electrochemical
response as electrode material for carbon paste electrode.
