AB  - Effect of methyl methacrylate (MMA) as a binder and heating treatment were investigated to improve green alumina compacts machinability. Properties of green compacts and their corresponding sintered samples prepared with and without MMA were compared. Investigation of green and sintered properties was performed on samples compacted at applied pressures up to 150 MPa. After pressing, samples with MMA were thermally treated at 115oC. The intention was to enhance the polymerization of MMA at a temperature a little higher than the glass transition temperature (Tg = 103oC) of poly (methyl methacrylate). Green compacts with MMA had higher green density values than those without MMA. Sintered samples with MMA had lower values of sintered density and higher values of total porosity; after sintering, relative linear shrinkage was around 15 % for the whole range of applied pressures. The possibility of easily machining the green compacts with MMA produces great possibilities for application in many fields

AB  - Ispitana je mogućnost primene metil metakrilata, MMA, kao akrilnog veziva u pripremi keramičkog praha alumine za presovanje sa namerom da se poboljša mašinska obradljivost ispresaka od alumine. Poređene su osobine ispresaka i osobine njima odgovarajućih sinterovanih uzoraka koji su pripremljeni sa i bez akrilnog veziva. Visoka gustina ispresaka sa MMA (2,35 g/cm3) u odnosu na ispreske samo od alumine (2,11 g/cm3) formiranih pod optimalnim pritiskom presovanja od 60 MPa, ukazuje na uticaj akrilata na poboljšano pakovanje praha alumine i njihovu odličnu mašinsku obradljivost; kod sinterovanih uzoraka povećana je poroznost, a smanjene su gustina i procenat linearnog skupljanja. Pokazano je da se mašinskom obradom ispresaka alumine sa MMA, mogu napraviti složene forme poput keramičkog zavrtnja ili keramički delovi sklopova, sa velikim mogućnostima komercijalne primene.
AB  - Investigated the possibility of using methyl methacrylate (MMA) as an acrylic binder in the preparation of ceramic powder of alumina for pressing with the intention of improving machinability of alumina flakes. Compared the properties of the green bodies and the properties of their corresponding sintered samples that are prepared with and without acrylic binder. The achieved higher density of green bodies with MMA (2.35 g/cm3) compared to green bodies without MMA (2.11 g/cm3) were formed under the optimal pressure of 60 MPa, indicating the improved packing of alumina powder with addition of acrylate. In the case of sintered samples, the porosities were increased, and the density and percentage of linear shrinkage were reduced. It has been shown that machining of green bodies, prepared with MMA, can be produced in the form of complex ceramic products of alumina like a screw with a nut and with great possibilities of commercial application.

U ovom radu opisane su metode za merenje i kontrolisanje četiri teška metala u različitim vrstama ambalažnog materijala, razvijene u Laboratoriji za fizičku hemiju Instituau za nuklearne nauke "Vinča"
AB  - According to EU Directive 94/62/EC, the sum of concentration levels of lead, cadmium, mercury and hexavalent chromium in packaging and packaging components should not exceed 100 ppm by weight after 30 June 2001. In this paper procedures for measuring and verifying the four heavy metals in various packaging materials, developed in Laboratory for physical chemistry in "Vinča" Institute of nuclear sciences, are described.

The effects of the applied voltage, deposition time, suspension temperature and the solid content of the aqueous suspension on the porosity of the obtained alumina films have been determined using optical microscopy coupled with image analysis. It was shown that the lowest film porosity was obtained from a suspension containing 20 wt.% alumina powder at the lowest applied voltage (30 V), for a longer deposition time (10 min) using a suspension temperature of 30 degreesC. This behavior can be explained by the smaller amount of hydrogen evolved on the cathode during the electrophoretic deposition process.

The type and quantity of deflocculant have been determined using zeta potential and viscosimetric measurements. AB  - A successful colloidal processing of ultrafine powders to produce high quality ceramic materials gives demand for stable, high degree particle dispersions. The stability of ceramic suspensions on the basis of SiC, Si3N4 and SiCN nanopowders in water and organic solvents (octane, benzene, toluene, benzyl alcohol and 1-octanole) was examined within 24 hours by means of screen sedimentation tests. Experimental results of the settling velocities were related to the calculated values of the total interaction potential energy between the particles interacting over the solvent molecules-the dispersion (van der Waals) attraction in case of organic liquids in the absence of dispersants, and a combination of dispersion attraction acid electrostatic forces in case of water, and finally to the physical properties of the used solvents.

AB  - Metal-ceramic-intermetallic multilayered, laminar composites present an attractive group of materials offering a variety of combinations of constituent component properties. Processing of these composites is possible due to a considerable processing flexibility afforded by the powder metallurgy route. In the present paper, the possibility of obtaining laminar composite structures consisting of metal (Ni), ceramic (Al2O3) and intermetallic compound (Ni3Al) layers, has been described. Individual layers were prepared by different techniques. Laminar composites were obtained by hot pressing and standard sintering process.

A statistical analysis of the influence of processing conditions on the properties of fused silica

AB  - In this work the quantitative relations between the properties of sintered fused silica (density, mechanical propel-ties, cristobalite content) and slip preparation parameters as well as sintering conditions (milling balls material, temperature and rime of sintering) were established Multifactorial experimental design ,cas used in ol der to obtain rite respective mathematical al models. The response surfaces of these models were analyzed, together with correlations between the compressive and tensile strength and cristobalite content. it was established that the maximum values of mechanical properties for a given material were obtained with 6-8 vol.% of cristobalite in sintered samples.
