AB - In this paper we present the phase and morphological characteristics of urinary stones from Serbian patients. The study included for the first time the determination of the phase composition and a statistical analysis of the presence of different types of urinary stones in both men and women in Serbia. The main goal of study was representation of collected data for the first time. For past three years, more than 600 samples were collected from Serbian patients. The phase composition of all samples of urinary stones was investigated using XRD analysis. Morphology and chemical composition of phases in some characteristic samples was determinate by the SEM-EDS analysis. Results indicate that there are several different types of urinary stones that vary in mineral composition, chemistry and morphology. It was found that 312 (52%) of the 600 stones were composed of calcium oxalate minerals (CaOx): 17.3% of which were pure calcium oxalate monohydrate COM, 4% were pure calcium oxalate dihydrate COD; 200 (33.3%) were a mixture of CaOx and Hydroxyapatite HA, 19 (3.1%) were uric acid (uricite) UA and uric acid dihydrate UAD, 17 (2.8%) were a combination of UA and CaOx minerals, 41 (6.8%) were combination of CaP minerals and CaOx, 11 (1.9%) were cystine (Cy) stones. The obtained data shows the diversity of types of urinary stones. Morphological, chemical and XRPD analysis give us statistical data which shows that the most common urinary stones from Serbian patients are from CaOx group and in most of cases are associated with CaP. © 2019 Elsevier B.V.

AB - The main goal of this study was the evaluation of physical–chemical, as well as radiological properties of residual materials used for geopolymer synthesis and those final products as a possible application as new materials in a civil engineering industry. Concentration of K and radionuclides from the U and Th decay series in waste precursors, their metaphases and geopolymer samples synthetized by alkali activation were determined together with corresponding absorbed dose rate (D˙) and the annual effective dose rate. Natural activity concentrations in the alkali-activated material (geopolymer) were found to be lower than that of both residual materials and calcined ones.

AB - Goal of this work is to establish technical feasibility and fundamentals of producing activated carbon from plane tree seeds biomass for porous materials derivation. Bio-chars produced via carbonization from plane tree seeds precursor were activated in CO2 at 750 and 850?C, during various residence times. Their surface area and porosity were characterized by N2 adsorption at 77 K. Surface areas of activated carbons can be correlated with kinetics mechanism and activation energy magnitudes of oxidation reaction by CO2, which are closely related to applied activation temperature. Result showed that high temperature activated carbon had higher gas adsorption as compared to activated carbon obtained from lower temperature during two-hour residence time. Breakthrough behavior was detected at 850?C where surface reactions dominate, and it is characterized by autocatalytic kinetic model under designed conditions. Both, temperature and CO2 concentration in vicinity of solid surface effect on breakthrough time of adsorbent. Derived bio-chars are converted into high quality activated carbons, with surface area of 776.55 m2/g, where micro-pores with pore diameters less than 2 nm prevail. Produced activated carbons have properties comparable with commercially available activated carbons, which can be successfully used for removal of harmful gaseous pollutants toward air purification.

AB - As a material for application in the life sciences, a new composite material, geopolymer/CeO2 (GP_CeO2), was synthesized as a potential low-cost solid electrolyte for application in solid oxide fuel cells operating in intermediate temperature (IT-SOFC). The new materials were obtained from alkali-activated metakaolin (calcined clay) in the presence of CeO2 powders (x = 10%). Besides the commercial CeO2 powder, as a source of ceria, two differently synthesized CeO2 powders also were used: CeO2 synthesized by modified glycine nitrate procedure (MGNP) and self-propagating reaction at room temperature (SPRT). The structural, morphological, and electrical properties of pure and GP_CeO2-type samples were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), BET, differential thermal and thermogravimetric analysis (DTA/TGA), scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), and method complex impedance (EIS). XRPD and matrix-assisted laser desorption and ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) analysis confirmed the formation of solid phase CeO2. The BET, DTA/TGA, FE-SEM, and EDS results indicated that particles of CeO2 were stabile interconnected and form a continuous conductive path, which was confirmed by the EIS method. The highest conductivity of 1.86 × 10−2 Ω−1 cm−1 was obtained for the sample GP_CeO2_MGNP at 700 °C. The corresponding value of activation energy for conductivity was 0.26 eV in the temperature range 500–700 °C.

AB - Geopolymers are an emerging class of materials that offer an alternative to the Portland cement as the binder of structural concrete. One of the advantages is that the primary source of their production is waste alumosilicate materials from different industries. One of the key issues in geopolymer synthesis is the low level of mechanical properties due to porosity as well as the high activity of conductivity carriers. It can often lead to limited application possibilities, so the objective is to obtain an enhanced strength as well as decreased cracking tendency through microstructure modification. The introduction of Ca(OH)2, under certain pH conditions could lead to the filling-the-pores process and improving the mechanical properties. The aim was to understand the role that calcium plays in the geopolymer synthesis, and to define which reaction prevails under the synthesis conditions: formation of geopolymer gel or calcium silicate hydrate that contains aluminum substitution (CASH). The synthesis was performed with different raw materials (with or without red mud) and different alkalinity conditions. Ca(OH)2 was the obligatory supplement to both of the mixtures. Different techniques were performed for the testing of reaction products, as well as to define the microstructural changes as the generator of improved mechanical properties and changed electrical conductivity. The characteristics of the geopolymer's macrostructure were defined by means of an SEM analysis. Compressive strength and electrical conductivity are among the investigated product's properties. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR) were used for the identification of various crystalline phases and an amorphous phase. ©, Institute of Metals and Technology, Ljubljana, Slovenia.

AB - Following the guiding 3R principle of sustainable development (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle), the potential applicability concerning various components of construction and demolition waste (C and DW) was investigated for radionuclide sorption (Sr, Co, Ni). Collected samples of waste concrete, facade, bricks and asphalt were characterized in respect to mineralogical and surface composition, pH and radioactivity, while their sorption capacities were determined in batch conditions. Selectivity of potential sorbents differed in respect to Co2+ and Ni2+ ions, whereas sorption of Sr2+ was generally low. Concrete and facade have demonstrated both: the highest sorption capacities and the strongest interaction with the investigated cations, as revealed by sequential extraction analysis of loaded sorbents. Taking into account chemical compatibility with mixtures, commonly used for the solidification of radioactive waste, and expressed high affinity for studied cations, waste cement materials and debris are promising matrices for radionuclide immobilization. AB - Modified solution precipitation method was used to prepare pure and doped Mg, Sr and Na hydroxyapatite type materials (CaP, CaMgP and CaSrNaP). Modification consisted of partial substitution of nitrates by acetate solution in order to achieve a more soluble and cost effective synthesis. The obtained samples were calcined at 400 degrees C (CaP400, CaMgP400 and CaSrNaP400). All powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Calcined samples were densified at 1000 degrees C in an air for 3 h (CaP1000, CaMgP1000 and CaSrNaP1000). Sintered samples were characterized by XRPD, FTIR, SEM, EDS and complex impedance methods. The highest conductivity was found for the multi-doped phosphate sample (CaSrNaP1000) at 700 degrees C (1.90x10(-3)Omega(-1)cm(-1)). The corresponding activation energies of conductivity amounted to 0.31 eV in the temperature range 500-700 degrees C.

AB - There is potential use of red mud for synthesis of inorganic polymeric materials through a geopolymerization process as an alternative in the sectors of construction and building materials. By introducing of inorganic and organic modificators of microstructure (calcium hydroxide, bifunctional epoxy resins, or various types of alkoxylanes) during the geopolymer synthesis the enhanced values of ductility and strength can be obtained. Research was performed on alumosilicate material (red mud and metakaolin) and alkali activator raw mixture with defined quantity of modificator. The best sinthesys conditions were identified. Post-synthesis curing also play important role in obtaining of good-performing geopolymers. Characteristics of geopolymers were defined by measuring of compressive strength, N2-physisorption, as well as by SEM analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). In addition the lower value of zeta potential was identified as the assisting factor for the specific structure domains formation (within the certain range of pH) accompanied by the high compressive strength.

AB - The main goal of the presented research was the preliminary investigation of possibility of red mud - Hungarian dump sites Almasfuzito (sample A) and Ajka (sample B) - application as a pigment or as a raw material for use in the construction materials industry. Also, the aim of this work was the characterization of red mud as industrial waste generated by the Bayer process in the aluminum industry - which may cause environmental problems if appropriate treatment is not carried out. The main mineral phases of both red mud are hematite (Fe2O3), calcite (CaCO3), gibbsite (Al(OH)(3)) and they consists of particles of median particle size 2.1 mu m (sample A) and 2.5 mu m (sample B) and have a characteristic red color, which was the reason for its testing for use in the industry of building materials as a pigment for standard concrete mixtures. The radionuclides content in the samples was determined by gamma spectrometry, and the radiological hazards originating from U-238, Th-232, K-40 in the samples, were assessed through the radium equivalent activity, and the external radiation hazard index. The absorbed dose rate and the annual effective dose were calculated in accordance with the UNSCEAR 2010 report and the results are presented in this paper.

AB - In this doctoral dissertation the main goal was to examine the possibilities for obtaining monetite (CaHPO4) and nanospheric strontium carbonate hydroxyapatite [Sr10(PO4)6(OH)(2-2x)(CO3)x ] materials by using faster, easier and cost-effective methods for synthesis.Monetite (CaHPO4) material was obtained by milling previously synthesized brushite (CaHPO4∙2H2O), in a vibratory mill resulting in its phase transformation occures. The effect of the different time periods of milling treatment on the phase composition and microstructural parameters of the treated material was also examined. The mechanism of phase transformation brushite-monetite during short time milling (12.5 minutes in total) was also shown. It was found that after 5.0 minutes of milling monetite phase starts to form, after brushite-monetite phase transition. The X-Ray powder diffraction (XRPD) method was used to investigate microstructural and phase properties of synthesized and milled calcium phosphate (CaP) samples. Raman spectroscopy, as a complementary method to XRPD analysis was used to confirm the purity of synthesized initial brushite material. Fourier transformation infra red spectroscopy (FTIR) was used for investigation and monitoring of the phase composition changes during milling treatment. The adsorption-desorption method (BET) was used to determine the porosity of the material milled for 5,0 min., whereas the morphological characteristics and semiquantitative analysis of obtained materials was observed using the method of scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive analysis (SEM-EDS). Monetite material with mesoporous properties was obtained after 5,0 minutes of milling in a vibratory mill. This material was further applied as adsorbent for adsorption of phosphate-pesticides i.e. malathion from aqueous solution...

This material was further applied as adsorbent for adsorption of phosphate-pesticides i.e. malathion from aqueous solution...",

AB - The possibility to use natural zeolite - clinoptilolite as a host material for radioactive Cs immobilization has been investigated. Cs-exchanged form of clinoptilolite which was prepared by treatment of clinoptilolite powder with 0.25 M CsCl solution was compacted. Both, powder and powder compact of exchanged clinoptilolite were thermally treated at 1200 C-0. The XRPD analysis showed that Cs was successfully immobilized after heat treatment by formation of stable cesium dodecaoxo-alumopentasilicate in both, powder sample and compact. The newly formed compound showed satisfactory Cs ions retention during leaching test. The sintered compact showed somewhat better resistance to Cs leaching than the thermally treated powder. The compressive strength of sintered compact was close to 200 MPa which is more than enough for easy handling and safe storage.

AB - Amorphous hafnia (HfO2) powders were synthesized through a novel reduction oxidation route, in which, metal hafnium was reduced from hafnium tetrachloride (HfCl4) by sodium borohydride (NaBH4), and then oxidized in ambient atmosphere. Upon calcinations, the powder crystallized to nanometric size HfO2 powder with monoclinic structure. Powder properties such as lattice parameters, crystallite and particle size were studied. X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) was used to characterize structure and phase evolution in synthesized samples. Calculation of the average crystallite size (D) was performed on the basis of the full width at half maximum intensity (FWHM) of the XRD peaks. Williamson-Hall plots were used to separate the effect of the size and strain in the nanocrystals. The morphologies of powders calcinated at higher temperatures were followed by Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

AB - Nanoemulsion technique was applied for synthesis of carbonated strontium hydroxyapatite (CSrHAp) at room temperature. X-ray powder diffraction analysis accompanied with Rietveld refinement reviled that synthesized powder were single-phase hydroxyapatite. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy showed that the CSrHAp was A-type substitution. The carbonate amount substituting the hydroxide group in the synthesized apatite was estimated, from the corresponding CO2 weight loss in the range 600-1100 degrees C. According to this empirical formula of as synthesized CHAp is S-10(PO4)(6)(OH)(0.60)(CO3)(0.70). These results were confirmed by the Rietveld refinement analysis. Using scanning electron microscopy analysis it was found that the synthesized CSrHAp particles were spherical in shape and that their sizes were in the nanometer range. Nanoemulsion strategy procedure provides a simple pathway to obtain single-phase CSrHAp. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - The microstructural characterization and adsorption properties of metakaolin (MK) and alkali-activated metakaolin, known as geopolymer materials (GP) were investigated. The structure and properties of the metakaolin and obtained geopolymer were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Furthermore, based on the analysis of adsorption efficiency, microstructure and mineral structure, the difference between geopolymer and metakaolin on the performance of immobilizing heavy metals have been discussed. The kinetics of adsorption can be represented by pseudo-second order equation. The results of lead ions adsorption experiments were best fitted by Freundlich adsorption isotherm for both investigated adsorbents. The highest removal efficiencies of alkali-activated material based on metakaolin was found 97.5% at pH 4 and metakaolin removal efficiencies was found 92% at pH 5.5.

AB - Mesoporous monetite (CaHPO4), obtained by mechanochemical treatment of previously synthesized brushite (CaHPO4 center dot 2H(2)O), was used as efficient adsorbent for the organic pesticide malathion. The structure of brushite was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. The phase transformation process was investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transformation infra-red spectroscopy (FTIR). The microstructure and morphology were determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the nitrogen adsorption-desorption method. It was found that five minutes of milling induces brushite-monetite phase transformation. Adsorption of malathion from aqueous solutions showed that this pesticide can be successfully adsorbed on surface of this material.

AB - In the present work, remediation of lead-containing solution using raw and modified kaolinite has been presented. The micro and nanostructure of samples has been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Laser diffraction and scattering (LDS), was analyzed by particle size analyzer based on laser diffraction and particle size distribution (PSD) was done. The degree of metal adsorption was evaluated analyzing the Pb(II) contaminated samples by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (micro- and nanostructure on immobilization efficiency correlCP AES). The results show the impact of immobilization efficiency and ation between micro- and nanostructure. The thermodynamic data (Delta HA degrees, Delta SA degrees, Delta GA degrees) are calculated from the temperature-dependent sorption isotherms. The results suggest sorption process of Pb(II) on kaolinite as spontaneous and endothermic.

AB - The kinetics of hydrogen absorption in Zr alloys containing Nb and Ta admixtures (10 wt% Nb, 12 wt%Ta and 10 wt%Nb and 12 wt%Ta) is addressed. Hydrogen absorption is measured in the temperature range 400-700 degrees C at hydrogen pressure 1 bar using the volumetric method, and a kinetic analysis is performed to determine the mechanisms and rates of hydrogen absorption. To get further insight into hydrogen diffusivity in zirconium hydride, H-1 NMR spectroscopy is used to provide the activation energies for proton jumping in the studied samples. The tantalum is found to dominantly influence the surface reactivity, while niobium influences large decrease of the activation energy for hydrogen diffusion in the bulk of zirconium hydride. This behavior is linked to the information on the structure of the alloys obtained by XRD. Copyright.(C) 2015, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - Cesium aluminosilicate phases are of the great interest as possible host for Cs immobilization in radioactive waste management. The possibility to use zeolite as a host material for radioactive Cs immobilization was investigated. Cs-exchanged forms of clinoptilolite and 13X which were prepared by ion-exchange treatment were compacted. The powders compacts of exchanged zeolites were thermally treated at 1200 °C. The XRD analysis showed that Cs was successfully immobilized after heat treatment by formation of stable cesium-aluminosilicate ceramic forms. Thermal and mechanical properties of the sintered samples were investigated. From the perspective of these characteristics, Cs-exchanged zeolite (clinoptilolite and 13 X) can be considered as a potential material for safe waste disposal.
