AB - The main aim of this paper is to investigate the effects of gamma-irradiation on dielectric properties of barium salt of 12-tungstophosphoric acid (WPA) hydrate BaHPW12O40-7H(2)O (BaHWPA(.)7). Irradiation was carried out with two doses. Permittivity measurements have been performed in microwave X-band, at room temperature. After the irradiation (the absorbed dose 940 kGy) visible effect is the slight yellow color of the specimen and both real part epsilon and imaginary p I art epsilon of permittivity curves are shifted along the frequency axis. By measuring permittivity several days in succession gradual recovery of the specimen was observed. After five days epsilon and epsilon curves returned to their initial values on the frequency axis, and the color also disappeared. The second irradiation of the same specimen (1880 kGy) resulted in somewhat larger shift of epsilon and epsilon towards lower frequencies. This time, with larger absorbed dose there was no recovery effect and no-coloration. IR spectra of unirradiated and irradiated specimens were recorded and obtained data used for explanation of the observed phenomena.

AB - The surface properties of Ni and Cu hexacyanoferrates were investigated by the inverse gas chromatography method. Retentions of 10 organic compounds were measured at zero surface coverage in the temperature range 80 to 95 C. The gas/solid partition coefficients and the related thermodynamic data of adsorption (standard free energy change, standard state enthalpies, and entropy changes) also at zero surface coverage were determined. The dispersive component of free surface energy of both hexacyanoferrates, at investigated temperatures, was calculated. The surface acid/base properties were also evaluated using polar adsorbates and the results obtained indicate that nickel hexacyanoferrate is more acidic than copper hexacyanoferrate. AB - In this paper local processes and structural phase transformations of the copper salt of 12-tungstophosphoric acid are investigated. The structural phase transformations were followed through bands, characteristic for the host lattice, in the IR and Raman spectra. The results of these investigations, as well as those of XRPD analysis and impedance measurements as a function of temperature show that some local processes provoke the change in the secondary structure of the Keggin anions.

AB - This paper describes a comparative study of the hardness characteristics, mechanical properties, microstructures, and fracture mechanisms of the thermite welded rail steel joints before and after heat treatment. It has been found that heat treatment of the welded joint improves the mechanical properties (UTS and elongation), and changes the fracture mechanism from brittle to ductile. Improved strength and elongation are attributed to the finer ferrite-pearlite microstructure and the different fracture mechanism. Microporosity and numerous inclusions were seen on the fracture surface of the welded joint. The chemical composition of the inclusions indicated that the molten thermite mixture had reacted with the magnesite lining of the ladle and the feeder. (C) Elsevier Science Inc., 1999. AB - The effect of ethanol addition on the spectral line intensities of aluminium and excitation conditions in an argon stabilized d.c. are was investigated. In order to find optimal conditions for trace elements determination, some experimental parameters, important for analytical capabilities of this plasma source, such as current intensity, spectroscopic buffer concentration and concentration of ethanol in aqueous-ethanol mixtures, were determined. The influence of ethanol addition on the nebulization efficiency and physical properties of the mixtures analyzed was examined too. The increase in intensity of Al atomic line in the presence of ethanol in concentration up to 20 %, can be partly explained by higher nebulization efficiency. The other reason lies in the changes in the excitation and ionization processes, which was confirmed by the measurements of excitation temperature and electron number density.

A simple and fast production of titanium carbide (TiC) from carbon and titanium powders by self-propagating high temperature synthesis have been explained. Effects of added amounts of TiC to the aluminothermic mixture of constant initial composition on increased hardness and tensile strength of steel castings has been investigated. AB - Adsorption of various organics on Ni- and Cu-hexacyanoferrates was investigated by gas-solid chromatography (inverse gas chromatography). Adsorption was studied in the temperature region from 80 to 95 degrees C at zero surface coverage. Thermodynamic data of adsorption (standard free energy change, standard state enthalpies, and the entropy changes) were calculated using the surface partition coefficients. Thermodynamic parameters are discussed in terms of surface properties of used adsorbents and physicochemical properties of organic compounds.

abstract = "Adsorption of various organics on Ni- and Cu-hexacyanoferrates was investigated by gas-solid chromatography (inverse gas chromatography). Adsorption was studied in the temperature region from 80 to 95 degrees C at zero surface coverage. Thermodynamic data of adsorption (standard free energy change, standard state enthalpies, and the entropy changes) were calculated using the surface partition coefficients. Thermodynamic parameters are discussed in terms of surface properties of used adsorbents and physicochemical properties of organic compounds.",

AB - The effect of the addition of ethanol to aqueous solutions of various trace elements (Ca, Cd, Mg, Cu and Ni) on their spectral line intensities in inductively coupled argon plasma (ICAP) was investigated. Using a relatively low ethanol content (up to 10%, v/v) an enhancement of both atomic and ionic lines was found but to a different extent. By optimization of experimental parameters, an improvement of the sensitivity of the multielemental analysis was obtained.
