AB - An efficient encapsulation of the fullerene into two hydrophobized and one native polysaccharide provided water soluble supramolecular hybrids. After covalent modification of polysaccharides by cholesterol, noncovalent hybrids were prepared by a three-step procedure, including mixing of individual aqueous solutions of hydrophobized, as well as native sugar with solution of the fullerene in pyridine, dialysis and lyophilization. Although the degree of the fullerene incorporation into hydrophobized substrates, cholesterol-levan and cholesterol-pullulan, was lower in comparison to the native polysaccharide levan, hydrophobization provided nanoparticles with improved properties. The particle size distribution, studied by dynamic light scattering and scanning electron microscopy revealed formation of moderately polydisperse aggregates, with the diameter contraction in comparison to the corresponding free polysaccharide, especially in the case of hydrophobized substrates. The morphological examination, done by scanning electron microscopy indicated the self-organization of the fullerene-native polysaccharide to round individual structures, while fullerene-hydrophobized polysaccharide hybrids tend to form networks. The antioxidant activity of the synthesized polysaccharide-C60 noncovalent hybrids versus starting polysaccharides was investigated by the DPPH radical scavenging and the β-carotene-linoleic acid bleaching methods. In all three complexes, the radical scavenging ability of the fullerene remained preserved, and a positive effect of levan hydrophobization was observed.

AB - Cerium oxide (CeO2) nanoparticles (CONPs) are interesting biomaterials with various applications in biomedicine, cosmetics and the pharmaceutical industry, but with limited practical application because of their low stability in aqueous media. The aim of this study was to obtain CONPs with increased stability by coating the particles. Microbial exopolysaccharides (levan, pullulan) and glucose were used to prepare CONPs under different synthesis conditions. Coating was attempted by adding the carbohydrates during (direct coating) or after (subsequent coating) the synthesis of CONPs. The obtained nanoparticles were characterized by X-Ray diffraction analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The suspension stability of the uncoated and coated CONPs in aqueous media was evaluated by measuring the hydrodynamic size, zeta potential and turbidity. The FT-IR spectra revealed the differences between coated CONPs and showed the success of subsequent coating with carbohydrates. Coating with carbohydrates improved the stability the CONP suspension by decreasing the size of aggregated particles. The suspensions of levan- and glucose-coated CONPs had the best stability. In this study, CONPs were prepared using non-toxic materials, which were completely environmentally friendly. The obtained results open new horizons for CONP synthesis, improving their biological applications.

AB - Two samples of macroporous crosslinked poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate), poly(GMA-co-EGDMA), with different porosity parameters were synthesized by suspension copolymerization and functionalized with ethylene diamine and diethylene triamine. The kinetics of Cr(VI) sorption by amino-functionalized poly(GMA-co-EGDMA) was investigated under non-competitive conditions. Competitive kinetics was studied from following multicomponent solutions: Cu(II) and Cr(VI); Cu(II), Co(II), Cd(II) and Ni(II): Cr(VI), Cu(II), Co(II) and Cd(II) solutions. Two kinetic models (the pseudo-first and pseudo-second-order) were used to determine the best-fit equation for the metals sorption by poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)-en and poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)-deta. AB - Macroporous crosslinked poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate). p(GME), was synthesized by suspension copolymerization and modified by reaction of the pendant epoxy groups with ethylenediamine. The sorption rate and capacity of the modified copolymer, p(GME)-en Rh(III), Au(III) and Pt(IV) ions were determined in batch experiments under non-competitive conditions. The uptake of Rh(III) was faster than those of Au(III) and Pt(IV). The sorption capacity for Pt(IV) was determined in the pH range 0.9-6.0. The maximum Pt(IV) uptake capacity onto p(GME)-en at pH 5.5 was 1.30 mmol/g.

AB - Two samples of macroporous crosslinked poly(glycidyl methacrylate-co-ethylene glycol dimethacrylate), poly(GMA-co-EGDMA), with different porosity parameters were synthesized by suspension copolymerization and modified by ring-opening reaction of the pendant epoxy groups with ethylene diamine (EDA). The samples were characterized by mercury porosimetry, FT-IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The sorption rate of the modified copolymer, poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)-en for Cu(II) ions determined under non-competitive conditions was relatively rapid, i.e. the maximum capacity was reached within 30 min. Batch sorption capacities for Cu(II), Fe(II), Mn(II), Cd(II), Zn(II), Pb(II), Cr(III) and Pt(IV) ions were determined under non-competitive conditions in the pH range 1.25-5.5 at room temperature. The maximum sorption capacities of poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)-en under non-competitive conditions were 1.30 mmol/g for Pt(IV) at pH 5.5, 1.10 mmol/g for Cu(II) at pH 5.5, 1.06 mmol/g for Pb(II) at pH 1.25 and 0.67 mmol/g for Cd(II) ions at pH 5.5. The selectivity of poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)-en towards Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Pb(II) and Pt(IV) ions was investigated under competitive conditions. Poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)-en showed high selectivity for Pt(IV) over Cu(II), Co(II), Ni(II) and Pb(II) ions at pH 2.1. At pH 5.5, the metal sorption capacities of poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)-en decreased in the order: Cu(II) GT Co(II) GT Pt(IV) approximate to Ni(II) GT Pb(II). Regeneration of the Cu(II), Ni(H) and Pb(II) loaded poly(GMA-co-EGDMA)-en with 2 M HIS04 showed that the polymer can be reused in several sorption/desorption cycles. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V.
