AB  - The aim of this work was to synthesize semiconducting oxide nanoparticles using a simple method with low production cost to be applied in natural sunlight for photocatalytic degradation of pollutants in waste water. Iron titanate (Fe2TiO5) nanoparticles with an orthorhombic structure were successfully synthesized using a modified sol–gel method and calcination at 750°C. The as-prepared Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles exhibited a moderate specific surface area. The mesoporous Fe2TiO5 nanoparticles possessed strong absorption in the visible-light region and the band gap was estimated to be around 2.16 eV. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue under natural sunlight. The effect of parameters such as the amount of catalyst, initial concentration of the dye and pH of the dye solution on the removal efficiency of methylene blue was investigated. Fe2TiO5 showed high degradation efficiency in a strong alkaline medium that can be the result of the facilitated formation of OH radicals due to an increased concentration of hydroxyl ions.

Synthesis and antibacterial activity of iron manganite (FeMnO3) particles against the environmental bacterium Bacillus subtilis

AB  - Nanocrystalline iron manganite powder was synthesized using the sol–gel combustion process, with glycine as fuel. It was further calcined at 900 °C for 8 h, resulting in the formation of a loose cubic FeMnO3 powder with a small specific surface area, net-like structure and plate-like particles as confirmed by XRD, N2 physisorption, FESEM and TEM analyses. The metal ion release was studied by ICP-OES and showed that less than 10 ppb of Fe or Mn ions were released by leaching in water, but 0.36 ppm Fe and 3.69 ppm Mn was found in LB (Luria–Bertani) bacterial medium. The generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) was monitored in distilled water and bacterial medium and showed that FeMnO3 particles do not generate O2˙− ions with or without UV irradiation, but synthesize H2O2 and show an antioxidative effect. Besides the higher stability of FeMnO3 particles in aqueous solution they showed an inhibitory effect on Bacillus subtilis growth in LB medium even at low concentrations (0.01 mg ml−1), but not in BHI medium even at 1 mg ml−1. This study points out that the mechanism of antibacterial action of engineered metal oxides needs continued investigation and specific experimental controls.

AB  - Starting hematite (Fe2O3), zinc oxide (ZnO) and manganese carbonate (MnCO3) powders were homogenized in a planetary ball mill in stainless steel bowls with stainless steel balls for 15 min, calcined in air at 1000 C for 2 h, milled in a planetary ball mill for 30 minutes, followed by 4 h in an aghate mill, sieved through a 325 mesh to form four starting powders: MnFe2O4, ZnFe2O4, Mn0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 and a two-phase mixture of zinc and manganese ferrite. Structural properties of the obtained powders were analyzed using XRD, SEM and EDS. Electrical properties of disk shaped samples were measured at room temperature on an impedance analyzer in the frequency range 100 to 40 MHz, enabling determination and comparison of dielectric permittivity and complex impedance. Complex relative permeability of toroid shaped samples was measured on an impedance analyzer in the frequency range from 1 MHz to 500 MHz.

Same compacts were heated with two-step sintering schedule with maximal 912oC and isothermal holding at 896oC, for approximately the same holding times as with isothermal. Shrinkage during heating was monitored with dilatometric device, while microstructure was determined with atomic force microscopy. XRD patterns were collected for the most prominent samples. Sintered specimens microstructure showed differences introduced during last sintering stage by two heating schedules.

Particle size distribution was analyzed on a laser particle size analyzer and correlated with XRD and SEM analysis. The band gap was determined using UV/Vis spectroscopy. Green samples were sintered in a dilatometer and at 1000oC for 2h in air. Thermal diffusivity was determined from photoacoustic measurements. Electrical conductivity measurements were performed. The aim was to obtain pseudobrookite with properties suitable for polymer paste for thick films to be applied as gas sensors.

AB  - Commercial Mn-Zn ferrite powder was milled in a planetary ball mill for 30-240 minutes. Particle size distribution in the milled powders was analyzed using a laser particle size analyzer and correlated with XRD and SEM analysis of the milled powders. Green disc and torroid samples were sintered in air in the temperature interval 800 -1300oC for 2 hours. SEM/EDS, AFM/MFM analysis of the sintered samples and measurements of their electrical properties such as DC resistance up to 500 MHz enabled establishment of a correlation between the microstructure and properties in the high-frequency range.

AB  - Thick films using starting nanopowders of TiO2 (anatase 99.7%) and alpha-Fe2O3 (hematite) mixed in the weight ratios 60:40 and 40:60 for thick film paste were fabricated by screen printing technology on an alumina substrate. Samples were sintered at temperatures of 800-950 degrees C for 60 min. Structural and electronic properties were analyzed by XRD and SEM analysis, UV/vis spectroscopy and current voltage analysis in view of potential application as gas sensors and anodes in photoelectrochemical cells for hydrogen generation and water splitting. XRD analysis showed that at 800 degrees C monoclinic pseudobrookite formed and anatase had transformed into rutile. Increase in sintering temperature lead to a gradual transformation of monoclinic pseudobrookite into the orthorhombic phase. SEM analysis showed that a homogenous small grain structure was obtained especially in the case of thick film samples with the 40:60 ratio of starting anatase and hematite sintered at 850 degrees C. AB  - The structure and lattice dynamics of mechanically activated BaTiO3 was investigated in this study. Phonon behavior and crystal structure stability of the obtained nanocrystalline BaTiO3 were discussed from the view point of crystallite size effects and microstrains induced by mechanical activation. A systematic study of Raman responses indicates that mechanical activation has a distinct influence on BaTiO3 lattice spectra affecting the intensity, width, and position of Raman modes. The measured Raman spectra were deconvoluted and phonon parameters were estimated. It has been established that applied mechanical activation leads to a significant decrease in the mean crystallites size, but nevertheless enables formation of tetragonal nanocrystalline BaTiO3.

AB  - A simple ball milling/thermal treatment procedure was applied to obtain fine thermistor powders. Three different powder compositions were analyzed-Cu0.2Ni0.5Zn1.0Mn1.3O4, Cu0.25Ni0.5Zn1.0Mn1.25O4 and Cu0.4Ni0.5Mn2.1O4. XRD analysis showed that all three powder compositions had a cubic spinel structure. Correlation between the sintering temperature, structure and resulting electrical properties was analyzed on bulk samples. Thick film pastes were composed and segmented thick film thermistors were screen printed on alumina, dried and fired. SEM analysis revealed a typical dendrite structure with small grains and a developed surface area. Thick film sheet resistance was measured on a test matrix and the resistance decreased with increasing Cu content. The temperature dependence of sample resistance was measured in a climatic chamber enabling calculation of the material constant and activation energy. Aging of the obtained segmented thermistors was analyzed and the resistivity drift was 0.23% for the Cu0.2Ni0.5Zn1.0Mn1.3O4 NTC thick film thermistor confirming greater stability of thermistors containing Zn and Cu that in combination with the determined good thermistor characteristics make them good candidates for temperature and heat loss sensor applications. AB  - The effects of Zn-doping on the dielectric behavior and electrical properties of bulk alpha-Fe2O3 have been studied. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the presence of two phases in all samples: hematite and spinel ZnFe2O4, with the amount of spinel phase increasing with increasing Zn content. Scanning electron microscopy analysis combined with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy showed that the Zn-bearing phase occurred in the form of individual spinel ZnFe2O4 grains in a hematite matrix. DC conductivity was measured in the temperature range 25-225°C (298-498 K). Impedance spectroscopy measurements in the same temperature range were carried out in the frequency range 100Hz to 10 MHz. Increase in the Zn content resulted in increased electrical conductivity and higher values of the dielectric constant. The resistance and capacitance of grains and grain boundaries were analyzed by modeling the experimental results using an equivalent circuit.

AB  - Due to its outstanding electrical characteristics, such as the low temperature expansion coefficient, low dielectric constant and good mechanical properties, cordierite, 2MgO center dot 2Al(2)O(3)center dot 5SiO(2), is a very attractive high-temperature ceramic material. In order to accelerate the process of sintering, 2.50 mass% Bi2O3 has been added to the starting mixtures. Liquid phase sintering caused by the presence of bismuth-oxide lowers the temperature of cordierite formation. The mechanical activation of the starting mixtures (0-56 min in vibro-mill) additionally lowers sintering temperatures. The sintering process was performed at 1200, 1300, 1350 and 1400 degrees C, for 2 h. The particle size analysis (PSA) was employed in order to determine the changes in the particle size of the mechanically treated powders. The phase composition of the starting powders and sintered materials was analyzed by the X-ray diffraction method. AB  - Mixtures of BaCO3, ZnO and TiO2 powders, with molar ratio of 1:2:4, were mechanically activated for 20, 40 and minutes in a planetary ball mill. The resulting powders were compacted into pellets and isothermally sintered at 1250 degrees C for 2h with a heating rate of 10 degrees C/min. X-ray diffraction analysis of obtained powders and sintered samples was performed in order to investigate changes of the phase composition. The microstructure of sintered samples was examined by scanning electron microscopy. The photoacoustic phase and amplitude spectra of sintered samples were measured as a function of the laser beam modulating frequency using a transmission detection configuration. Fitting of experimental data enabled determination of photoacoustic properties including thermal diffusivity. Based on the results obtained correlation between thermal diffusivity and experimental conditions, as well the samples microstructure characteristics, was discussed.

AB  - The effects of Zn-doping on the dielectric behavior and electrical properties of bulk alpha-Fe2O3 have been studied. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the presence of two phases in all samples: hematite and spinel ZnFe2O4, with the amount of spinel phase increasing with increasing Zn content. Scanning electron microscopy analysis combined with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy showed that the Zn-bearing phase occurred in the form of individual spinel ZnFe2O4 grains in a hematite matrix. DC conductivity was measured in the temperature range 25-225 degrees C (298-498 K). Impedance spectroscopy measurements in the same temperature range were carried out in the frequency range 100Hz to 10 MHz. Increase in the Zn content resulted in increased electrical conductivity and higher values of the dielectric constant. The resistance and capacitance of grains and grain boundaries were analyzed by modeling the experimental results using an equivalent circuit.

AB  - Our aim was to assess clinical utility of Tc-99m-EDDA/HYNIC-TOC scintigraphy for evaluation of lung lesions in patients with neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). Single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) of the thorax and whole body scintigraphy were performed in 34 patients using Tc-99m-EDDA/HYNIC-TOC. Visual assessment was complemented by semiquantitative evaluation based on tumor to non-tumor (TINT) ratio. Clinical, laboratory, and histological findings served as the standard for comparison. Enhanced tracer uptake was observed on both SPECT and whole body scintigraphy in 29 of 34 patients (88% sensitivity). TINT ratios were significantly higher on SPECT than whole body images (2.96 +/- 1.07 vs. 1.70 +/- 0.43, p LT 0.01) and did not correlate with NET proliferation index Ki-67 (r= - 0.36, p=0.27). Conclusion: Tc-99m-EDDA/HYNIC-TOC scintigraphy is useful for evaluation of NET tissue in the lungs. SPECT provides better visualization of lung lesions than whole body scintigraphy. The intensity of tracer uptake, however, does not relate to the proliferation rate of NETs. Tc-99m-EDDA/HYNIC-TOC scintigraphy may be helpful for selecting and monitoring treatment options, particularly when radiolabeled somatostatin analogue therapy becomes available.

The powders obtained were sintered non-isothermally to temperatures between 800 and 1100 degrees C and then held at those temperatures for 120 min. Analysis of the influence of MgO addition on the synthesis of zinc-titanate ceramics showed that its addition increased slightly the temperature at which the reaction process started, accelerated the reaction and resulted in higher sample densities. These results were correlated with the results of structural characterization using X-ray powder diffraction method and SEM analysis. AB  - The aim of this work was analysis of isothermal sintering of zinc titanate ceramics doped with MgO obtained by mechanical activation. Mixtures of ZnO, Ti02 and MgO (0, 1.25 and 2.5%) were mechanically activated 15 minutes in a planetary ball mill. The powders obtained were pressed under different pressures and the results were fitted with a phenomenological compacting equation. Isothermal sintering was performed in air for 120 minutes at four different temperatures. Structural characterization of ZnO-TiOrMgb system' after milling and sintering was performed at room temperature using XRPD measurements. DTA measurements showed different activation energies for pure and doped ZnO-Ti02 systems. The main conclusions are that doped zinc titanate samples achieve higher densities after sintering and that addition of MgO stabilizes the crystal structure of zinc titanate.

AB  - In this paper the influence of tribophysical activation on non-isothermal sintering of barium titanate has been investigated. BaTiO3 Powders were tribophysically activated in a planetary ball mill for 0, 60 and 120 min., pressed and non-isothermally sintered up to 1380 degrees C. Dilatometric analysis was performed in air in the temperature range from room temperature to 1380 degrees C with heating rates of 10, 20 and 30 degrees C/min. The samples were analyzed by the X-ray powder diffraction method. Investigation of the morphology of microstructure constituents was performed using the scanning electron microsocopy method. With the purpose of optimizing technological parameters the results obtained by microstructure analysis were correlated with the results of quantitative dilatometric analysis.
