AB - The current study focuses on creating an initial highly alkaline simulated body fluid whose pH can be decreased to a physiological range by adding CO2 (protein-free simulated body fluid) or a combination of CO2 and human proteins (protein-containing simulated body fluid). The effects of dissolved human proteins, Ca2+ ions, and immersed plasma-sprayed hydroxyapatite coatings on the pH and chemical instability of prepared simulated body fluids were investigated. The physiological concentration of dissolved human proteins decreased the pH instability in prepared simulated body fluids by 60% and the physiological concentration of dissolved Ca2+ ions by 15%. The effect of immersing the hydroxyapatite coatings was negligible. In terms of chemical instability, the dissolution of Ca2+ ions caused the blurring of protein-free simulated body fluids after 0.6-1.0 h. In protein-containing simulated body fluids, this phenomenon was undetectable due to their opacity. The effects of human protein presence on the carbonated-apatite-forming ability on the surfaces of immersed hydroxyapatite coatings in the prepared simulated body fluids were also assessed. The experiments validated the bioactivity of plasma-sprayed hydroxyapatite coatings in the prepared simulated body fluids, regardless of protein presence. On the other hand, under the different experimental conditions (unregulated or regulated pH), the human protein presence had an inhibitory (unregulated pH) or indifferent/promoting (regulated pH) influence on the carbonated-apatite-forming ability. The results of the present study are discussed, as well as the strengths and shortcomings of the prepared simulated body fluids, and are compared to those of previous relevant investigations.

AB - The present study estimated the cracking phenomenon in as-plasma-sprayed hydroxylapatite coatings (HACs) after they were being subjected to the severe cutting conditions in the direction perpendicular to the coating/substrate interface. In order to evaluate the effects of substrate preheating on the occurrence of micro-cracks, the HACs were deposited at different initial substrate temperatures (T-S = 20, 100 and 200 degrees C). The changes in phase composition and HA splat morphology with T-S were observed and were correlated with the cracking occurrence. The results showed that severe cutting conditions introduced a localized cracking in the regions of HACs dominantly attributed to the brittle hydroxyl- deficient amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) phase. This effect was particularly observable in the HACs deposited without preheating of substrate. On the other hand, the preheating of substrate reduced the presence of micro-cracks and caused insignificant changes in the average local phase composition. In HACs deposited with preheating of substrate, the HA splats (of which HACs are composed) were thinner and recrystallized HA regions seemed smaller in size and more evenly distributed. These results implied potentially important roles of the HA splat formation mechanism on the distribution of ACP and recrystallized HA regions in the as-plasma-sprayed HACs and the cracking resistance of HACs.

AB - The present work demonstrates a procedure for synthesis of stainless steel powder by gravity sintering method. As an additive to the basic powder, NiB powder was added in the amount of 0.2 - 1.0 wt.%. Gravity sintering was done in vacuum, at the temperatures of 1100 degrees C - 1250 degrees C, in the course of 3 - 60 min, using ceramic mould. Structural characterization was conducted by XRD, and microstructural analysis by optical and scanning electron microscope (SEM). Mechanical properties were investigated by tensile tests with steel rings. Density and permeability were determined by standard techniques for porous samples. Gravity sintered stainless steel with NiB addition had more superior mechanical and physico-chemical properties compared to stainless steel obtained by standard powder metallurgy procedures - pressing and sintering.

AB - The aim of the present study was to investigate the influence of substrate preheating on the structural properties of hydroxyapatite coatings (HACs) deposited by using the high power (52 kW) laminar plasma jet. The deposition experiments were performed within the 20-200 degrees C temperature range at different stand-off distances. The structural properties in the thickness direction and at the surface of the HACs were investigated by using the micro-Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectrometry, and X-ray powder diffractometry. The deposition without the preheating of the substrate produced HACs with crystallinity gradient in the thickness direction. At the stand-off distance of 80 mm, the preheating of the substrate at 200 degrees C practically eliminated the crystallinity gradient. At distances from the coating/substrate interface shorter than similar to 100 mu m, the increase of crystallinity with the preheating of the substrate was dominantly attributed to the recrystallization of hydroxyl-rich ACP into HA. At longer distances and higher initial substrate temperatures ( GT 100 degrees C), the crystallinity changes were negligible, whereas the recrystallization of hydroxyl-deficient ACP into oxyapatite (OA) was also possible. The X-ray diffractometry indicated the deposition conditions under which a minimum residual stress was achieved. The results of the present study strongly suggested the relation between the ACP - GT HA remystallization process and the bonding strength of the HACs. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. AB - The aim of this work was to examine the dependence of the local surface structure (surface structural heterogeneity) on the local thickness (thickness uniformity) and structure properties along the thickness of hydroxyapatite coatings (HACs) deposited by using the high power (52 kW) laminar plasma jet. For the deposition process, a relatively small size of the feedstock hydroxyapatite powder (HAP) (33 mu m) was used. The HACs were deposited at different stand-off distances (SODs) (80, 100, and 150 mm) without preheating of substrates. The thickness measurements were performed by using the calibrated micrometer and light microscopy (LM). The surface micro-structure was analyzed by using the micro-Raman spectroscopy (MRS), whereas the micro-structure along the thickness of HACs was studied by using the MRS, X-ray powder diffractometry (XRPD), and LM (combined with chemical etching). The results showed a heterogeneous phase distribution on the surface of each HAC analyzed as well as the non-uniform thickness of HACs. Apparently, a correlation existed between the local surface structure and the local thickness of HACs. However, the MRS, XRPD, and LM analyses of micro-structure along the thickness of HACs indicated that the differences in the local surface structure could be related to the different recrystallization established during the plasma deposition process in the different parts along the thickness of each HAC analyzed. AB - Hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings were deposited on high purity titanium substrate by atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) with high electric energy input. Previously, the surface of the titanium was prepared by alkali etching with NaOH and subsequent diverse thermal treatments. The phase composition, structure and morphology of the nano-structured HA coatings were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). The XRD pattern showed that the coatings deposited by APS consisted mainly of HA with crystallite sizes between 15.5 and 31 nm and small quantities of the amorphous HA phase. The SEM observation showed that the as-deposited coatings had very different morphology with typical features of micro-structural patterns, which are desirable for improving the biological performances of HA coatings. AES analysis of various spots of the titanium substrate-coating interface showed the presence of an oxide layer with implanted Ca ions owing to the high kinetic energy of the plasma jet. This layer caused a significant increase in the measured adhesive strength, showing values in the range of 51.8-62.5 MPa. The sintering mechanism was studied using several approaches that show that the dominant sintering mechanism was volume diffusion.

AB - In this research, the structure changes along the depth gradient layers of titanium substrate, after etching with NaOH and subsequent thermal treatment at various temperatures between 300 and 800 degrees C, were investigated by XRD, FTIR and AES. Particularly, the changes of Ti substrate after etching with NaOH, subsequent ionic exchange of Na+ with Ca2+ ions and thermal treatment at 700 degrees C were analysed. Due to this approach, it was possible to get insight into the chemical changes and changes of Ti oxidation states and consequent phase analysis, along the depth of the titanium oxide coatings. In addition, Secondary Electron Imaging (SEI) showed very interesting nanotopology of all samples. Particularly interesting topology, consisting of very thin nano-designed walls between mutually interconnected pores, was observed for the sample in which Na+ were replaced with Ca2+ ions. This structure might be suitable for deposition of hydroxyapatite by biomimetic or plasma methods and as an appropriate scaffold for cell adhesion and proliferation. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. AB - Characteristics of the hydroxyapatite (HA) plasma coatings are directly related to the performances of the plasma jet used in the deposition process. Previous research within a plasma spray technique, based on the application of the conventional plasma gun (PG), suggested the use of lower power level of the PG, about 25kW, in order to avoid significant chemical decomposition of HA occurring at higher powers. However, coatings obtained at this power level have a poor microstructure, resulting in their unsatisfactory cohesion/adhesion properties. In contrast to that, this study shows that good quality HA coatings can be produced in plasma obtained by plasma jet operated at high power level (52 kW) and in laminar flow mode. For two HA powders types, containing particles differing in mass by a factor of 20, a set of optimum deposition parameters has been defined leading to the coatings with high crystallinity (80-90%), excellent microstructure (porosity 1-2%) and high adhesion strength (60 and 40 MPa for the coating thicknesses of 120 and 350 mu m, respectively). It has been shown that higher plasma power does not necessarily lead to a higher HA decomposition.

AB - Multiple hardening mechanisms of a copper matrix have been presented and discussed. The gas atomized Cu-0.6 wt.%Ti-2.5 wt.%TiB2 (Cu-Ti-TiB2) powders were used as starting materials. Dispersoid particles TiB2 were formed in situ in the copper matrix during gas atomization. The powders have been consolidated by hot isostatic pressing (HIP). Optical microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis were performed for microstructural characterization of powders and composite compacts. High hardening of the Cu-Ti-TiB2 composite achieved by aging is a consequence of the simultaneous influence of the following factors: the development of modulated structure with metastable Cu4Ti(m) particles and in situ formed TiB2 dispersoid particles. AB - The multiple hardening mechanisms of a copper matrix have been presented and discussed. The pre-alloyed ball milled Cu-3 wt.%Al and the atomized Cu-0.6 wt.%Ti-2.5 wt.%TiB(2) powders have been used as starting materials. Dispersoid particles Al(2)O(3) and TiB(2) were formed in situ. The powders have been hot consolidated. Optical microscopy, SEM, TEM, and X-ray diffraction analysis were performed for microstructural characterization. Increase in microhardness of Cu-3 wt.%Al compacts is a consequence of the crystallite size refinement and the presence of Al(2)O(3) particles. High hardening of Cu-0.6 wt.%Ti-2.5 wt.%TiB(2) is a consequence of the presence of modular structure, Cu(4)Ti((m)), and TiB(2) particles.

AB - A new plasma jet (PJ-100) plasma spraying torch with a fixed minimal arc length was tested and the basic working parameters were measured and evaluated. The velocity of the plasma exiting both the cylindrical and the conical anode nozzles was assessed by measuring the thrust generated by the plasma jet and by photographing the translation of plasma clouds (parts with different brightnesses) in the last third of the length of the plasma plume. The basic characteristics of the argon/hydrogen plasma jets (enthalpy, mean temperature, mean plasma velocity and effective exhaust thrust velocity) were determined for different working regimes, for both the cylindrical and the conical nozzles. The thermal efficiency of the new plasma torch is between 70% and 74% for the plasma generation power up to 90kW. The plasma plume generated in the cylindrical nozzle has a homogeneous radial temperature (and velocity) distribution with a full laminar flow.

AB - It is a well known fact that behavior of materials during consolidation at high temperatures is a very complex issue. Each mechanism that promotes densification, depends on a large number of parameters in many different ways, making the development of the densification process very difficult to plan. For that reason, any kind of model which could encompass large number of the influencing parameters would be a great contribution for easier planning and handling of the densification process. Modeling of densification process based on the papers of well-known authors, including a new appropriate modifications is presented in this work. Importance of this model is that it can be applicable to composite materials. This new model was tested on a real Al-SiC composite systems (Al-10 vol.% SiC, Al-30 vol.% SiC and Al-50 vol.% SiC). Predicted behavior of composites obtained by model calculations and the one defined through the experiments concur in the 7-30% range. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB - Diamond coatings were deposited onto Mo and WC-Co Substrates using a low pressure premixed acetylene-oxygen flat flame by means of a special apparatus operating at 50 mbar. Uniform diamond coatings containing significant amounts of non-diamond carbon were deposited over areas of approximate to 7 cm(2) onto Mo substrates, the coating thickness after 1 h deposition amounted to approximate to 1 mu m. Upon machining an Al-12 % Si alloy under identical conditions, the diamond coated WC-Co cutting tool inserts showed 30 % less wear than the as-receivcd inserts.

AB - The influence of hot-pressing (HP-ing) parameters on the microstructure, tensile properties and impact toughness of Ti6Al4V alloy produced by the powder metallurgy (PM) technique was evaluated. The experimental results show that variations in the microstructural morphology and residual porosity play an important role in affecting the mechanical properties of this alloy. The lamellar microstructure with a higher density, obtained by HP-ing above the beta-transition temperature (T-beta), was found to exibit a higher tensile strenght and toughness than the globular microstructure produced below T-beta. Although both types of microstructure show a mixed fracture, the ductile mode was more pronounced in the case of the fully lamellar microstructure. By controlling the HP-ing pressure and duration time, the globular microstructure, with lower porosity, improved tensile strength and ductility in combination with a better resistance to crack initation and propagation, can be obtained.

AB - The structural and compression mechanical properties of Ti3Al-based intermetallics produced by powder metallurgy techniques have been studied. The as-milled powders were compacted by hot pressing to non-porous homogenous compacts. Prior to compression tests, all compacts were homogenized by a solution treatment at 1050 degrees C (alpha+beta region) for 1h, followed by water quenching. The compression tests were performed from room temperature to 500 degrees C in vacuum at a strain rate of 2.4 x 10(-3) s(-1). Detailed microstructural characterization was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), followed by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction analysis.

AB - The compressive characteristics and fracture behavior of CW67 aluminum alloy and of a composite based on CW67 alloy were studied under unaxial compressive loading in the temperature range 25-400 degrees C, at a constant strain rate of 2.4 x 10(3)s(-1). The yield strength values of the composite were higher than those of the monolithic alloy at all temperatures. The ultimate strength values of the composite were lower at room temperature, but higher at elevated temperatures when compared with those of the monolithic alloy. The composite exhibited lower ductility than the monolithic alloy in the entire temperature range. High concentration of SiC particles in the structure of CW67 composite affected its compressive properties. At higher temperatures, it behaved like a typical precipitation hardened alloy, in other words, with temperature increase the main influence on the mechanical properties occurred in its matrix. When temperature rises, the fracture process changes from particle cracking and particle agglomerate decohesion (at room temperature) to particle matrix debonding (at high temperature).
