Influence of anharmonic convex interparticle potential and Shapiro steps in the opposite direction of driving force

AB  - The response function and largest Lyapunov exponent analysis were applied to the driven overdamped Frenkel-Kontorova model with two types of anharmonic convex interparticle potentials. In both cases model reduces to a single particle model for integer values of winding number. It is shown that the mirror image of the amplitude dependence of critical depinning force and largest Lyapunov exponent observed recently in the standard Frenkel-Kontorova model (Odavić et al 2017 Commun. Nonlinear Sci. Numer. Simul. 47, 100) is not retained generally. Behaviour of systems with relatively strong interparticle force was examined and evidence for the appearance of mode-locking phenomenon in both directions of particles’ motion is presented. © 2021 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Hysteresis in the underdamped three-layer model

AB  - The hysteretic phenomena were investigated in the three-layer model consisting of a chain of harmonically interacting atoms confined between two rigid periodical substrate potentials, where the top substrate was driven by a external force. The pinning to running and the running-to pinning transitions were examined as the driving force was varied and the influence of the equilibrium spacing and strength of the interaction of the particles in the middle layer on the static and kinetic friction force analyzed in detail. The parameter space in which the friction forces could reach their maxima or minima was determined. These results could be interesting for the selection of lubricant materials and minimization of energy loss in tribology.

Complexity of Shapiro steps

AB  - We demonstrate, using the example of the dc+ac driven overdamped Frenkel-Kontorova model, that an easily calculable measure of complexity can be used for the examination of Shapiro steps in the presence of thermal noise. In real systems, thermal noise causes melting or even disappearance of Shapiro steps, which makes their analysis in the standard way from the response function difficult. Unlike in the conventional approach, here, by calculating the Kolmogorov complexity of certain areas in the response function, we were able to detect Shapiro steps, measure their size with the desired precision, and examine their temperature dependence. The aim of this work is to provide scientists, particularly experimentalists, with an unconventional, but practical and easy tool for examination of Shapiro steps in real systems.

Kinetic friction force in a three-layer model with commensurate substrates

AB  - A chain of harmonically interacting particles confined between two sinusoidal substrate potentials has been analysed. When the top substrate is driven through an attached spring with a constant velocity, the influence of the system parameters on the kinetic friction force was examined in the system with commensurate substrates. It was shown that the friction reached its maximum value when the equilibrium distance of the intermediate particles was an integer multiple of the space period of the upper and lower substrate potentials, which led to the maximum energy loss. This loss can be reduced by the increase of interparticle interaction of the middle layer.

Ac-driven annular Josephson junctions: The missing Shapiro steps

AB  - Examination of an annular system of underdamped Josephson junctions in the presence of external radiation showed that the ability of the system to lock with some external radiation was determined not only by the number but also by the type of rotating excitations (fluxons or antifluxons). Shapiro steps can be observed in the current-voltage characteristic only in the system with trapped fluxons or in the system with fluxon-antifluxon pairs. If the trapped fluxons circulate simultaneously with fluxon-antifluxon pairs, there are no Shapiro steps regardless of the amplitude or frequency of the applied external radiation. © 2020 American Physical Society.

AB  - The effects of inertial terms on the dynamics of the dc+ac driven Frenkel-Kontorova model were examined. As the mass of particles was varied, the response of the system to the driving forces and appearance of the Shapiro steps were analyzed in detail. Unlike in the overdamped case, the increase of mass led to the appearance of the whole series of subharmonic steps in the staircase of the average velocity as a function of average driving force in any commensurate structure. At certain values of parameters, the subharmonic steps became separated by chaotic windows while the whole structure retained scaling similar to the original staircase. The mass of the particles also determined their sensitivity to the forces governing their dynamics. Depending on their mass, they were found to exhibit three types of dynamics, from dynamical mode-locking with chaotic windows, through to a typical dc response, to essentially a free-particle response. Examination of this dynamics in both the upforce and downforce directions showed that the system may not only exhibit hysteresis, but also that large Shapiro steps may appear in the downforce direction, even in cases for which no dynamical mode-locking occurred in the upforce direction. © 2019 American Physical Society.

The results show that the dynamical mode-locking appears not only in the upper layer but also in the middle one. The behavior of the middle layer is strongly determined by the amplitude and frequency of the ac force, and the phase diagram which presents pinned, dynamical mode-locking and sliding regimes as a function of system parameters are given. Contrary to the standard case, critical depinning force and steps exhibit anomalous behavior. Particles trajectories have been analyzed which showed very different motion of particles from the one which usually appears in systems under (Formula presented.) forces.

Application of largest Lyapunov exponent analysis on the studies of dynamics under external forces

AB  - Dynamics of driven dissipative Frenkel-Kontorova model is examined by using largest Lyapunov exponent computational technique. Obtained results show that besides the usual way where behavior of the system in the presence of external forces is studied by analyzing its dynamical response function, the largest Lyapunov exponent analysis can represent a very convenient tool to examine system dynamics. In the dc driven systems, the critical depinning force for particular structure could be estimated by computing the largest Lyapunov exponent. In the dc+ac driven systems, if the substrate potential is the standard sinusoidal one, calculation of the largest Lyapunov exponent offers a more sensitive way to detect the presence of Shapiro steps. When the amplitude of the ac force is varied the behavior of the largest Lyapunov exponent in the pinned regime completely reflects the behavior of Shapiro steps and the critical depinning force, in particular, it represents the mirror image of the amplitude dependence of critical depinning force. This points out an advantage of this technique since by calculating the largest Lyapunov exponent in the pinned regime we can get an insight into the dynamics of the system when driving forces are applied. Additionally, the system is shown to be not chaotic even in the case of incommensurate structures and large amplitudes of external force, which is a consequence of overdampness of the model and the Middletons no passing rule. AB  - The devils staircase structure arising from the complete mode locking of an entirely nonchaotic system, the overdamped dc+ac driven Frenkel-Kontorova model with deformable substrate potential, was observed. Even though no chaos was found, a hierarchical ordering of the Shapiro steps was made possible through the use of a previously introduced continued fraction formula. The absence of chaos, deduced here from Lyapunov exponent analyses, can be attributed to the overdamped character and the Middleton no-passing rule. A comparative analysis of a one-dimensional stack of Josephson junctions confirmed the disappearance of chaos with increasing dissipation. Other common dynamic features were also identified through this comparison. A detailed analysis of the amplitude dependence of the Shapiro steps revealed that only for the case of a purely sinusoidal substrate potential did the relative sizes of the steps follow a Farey sequence. For nonsinusoidal (deformed) potentials, the symmetry of the Stern-Brocot tree, depicting all members of particular Farey sequence, was seen to be increasingly broken, with certain steps being more prominent and their relative sizes not following the Farey rule.

AB  - The largest Lyapunov exponent has been examined in the dynamical-mode locking phenomena of the ac+dc driven dissipative Frenkel-Kontorova model with deformable substrate potential. Due to deformation, large fractional and higher order subharmonic steps appear in the response function of the system. Computation of the largest Lyapunov exponent as a way to verify their presence led to the observation of the Farey sequence. In the standard regime, the appearance of half-integer and other subharmonic steps between the large harmonic steps, and their relative sizes follow the Farey construction. In the nonstandard regime, however, the half-integer steps are larger than harmonic ones, and Farey construction is only present in the appearance of higher order subharmonic steps. The examination of Lyapunov exponents has also shown that regardless of the substrate potential or deformation, there was no chaos in the system.

AB  - Rectification phenomena and the phase locking in a two-dimensional overdamped Frenkel-Kontorova model with a graphite periodic substrate were studied. The presence of dc and ac forces in the longitudinal direction causes the appearance of dynamicalmode locking and the steps in the response function of the system. On the other hand, the presence of an ac force in the transverse direction causes the appearance of rectification, even though there is no net dc force in the transverse direction. It is found that whereas the longitudinal velocity increases in a series of steps, rectification in the transverse direction can occur only between two neighbor steps. The amplitude and phase of the external ac driving force affect the depinning force, rectification of the system and particles trajectories.

AB  - The propagation of kink or edge dislocations in the underdamped generalized two-dimensional Frenkel-Kontorova model with harmonic interaction is studied with numerical simulations. The obtained results show that exactly one line of atoms can be inserted into the lattice, which remains at standstill. However, if more than one line of atoms are inserted into the lattice, then they will split into several lines with alpha = 1, where alpha presents the atoms inserted. In other words, only the kink with alpha = 1 is stable, while the other kinks are unstable, and will split into alpha = 1 kinks, which remain at standstill.

AB  - An overdamped three-layer model consisting of two harmonic chains of interacting particles, representing the upper and the middle layers, which move over the substrate potential, is studied in the present paper. A dc+ac force is applied only on the upper harmonic chain, and dynamics of both layers are investigated. The results show that the dynamical mode locking and Shapiro steps appear not only in the upper layer but also in the middle one. It is noted that the motion of particles in the upper layer corresponds to the standard Frenkel-Kontorova model. The dependence of the Shapiro steps of the middle layer on the system parameters are determined. It is shown that the height of the first Shapiro step of the upper layer is unrelated to the interaction parameters of the particles of both the upper and the middle layers, while the height of the first Shapiro step of the middle layer depend only on the interaction parameters of the particles of the middle layers. Two critical forces which transfer from locked state to the sliding one of both the upper and the middle layers are also studied. They depend on the amplitude and the frequency of the external ac driving force.

AB  - Properties of the Shapiro steps in different commensurate structures of the ac + dc driven Frenkel-Kontorova model with asymmetric deformable substrate potential have been examined. Deviation from the sinusoidal potential produces appearance of large subharmonic steps. In general, different commensurate structures respond differently to the applied force and have different velocities. The results have shown that after shape parameter gets some critical value, there is no difference in the behavior of Shapiro steps for different commensurate structures. The step size and the critical depinning force for different commensurate structures saturate to the same values, due to reduction of degrees of freedom with the large deformation of potential. AB  - We examine the effects of the interchain coupling on the properties of the large adiabatic polaron in the two chain model. In dependence of the strength of the interchain coupling (gamma) two different types of polaron solutions were found. In the weak coupling regime (gamma LT 1/2), polaron is confined to a single chain. As coupling increases continual transition towards the delocalization takes place - polaron amplitudes on both chains gradually become equalized, in the same time, its binding energy vanishes. Finally, above the critical coupling strength, polaron is fully delocalized - equally distributed over the both chains while its energy lies within the band of free states. Our the most specific prediction is the substantial impact of the polaron motion on its character. This implies the emergence of the two different regimes in charge transfer processes which may be experimentally verified. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

AB  - Size effect of the subharmonic Shapiro steps on the behavior of harmonic ones is studied in the ac driven overdamped Frenkel-Kontorova model with different types of physically important realistic substrate potentials. The properties of harmonic Shapiro steps are directly correlated with the size of halfinteger steps; and according to that in their amplitude dependence, three distinctive types of behavior have been classified. Our results on other realistic systems show that these classifications are not universal, and that not only the size of halfinteger steps but also the type of the substrate potential determines the properties and correlation between the Shapiro steps. While for some potentials such as variable and double-barrier potential, system evolves through different types of amplitude dependence as the size of halfinteger steps changes, in the case of double-well potential, the system maintains the standard behavior (the behavior for small halfinteger steps) even in the presence of large halfinteger steps. AB  - We demonstrate the ratchet and phase locking effects in a two-dimensional overdamped Frenkel-Kontorova model with a square symmetric periodic substrate when both a longitudinal dc drive and a circular ac drive are applied. Besides the harmonic steps, the large half integer steps can also clearly be seen in the longitudinal (x) direction. These half integer steps are directly correlated to the appearance of positive and negative ratchet effects in the transverse (y) direction due to the symmetry breaking in the combination of the dc and ac drives. The angle between the net displacement and the longitudinal direction is analytically obtained in a single period of the ac drive. In the examination of the amplitude dependence of the ac drive, the maxima decrease monotonically with the amplitude, while the anomalies occur for the critical depinning force and the harmonic steps due to the spatial symmetry breaking of orbits in the presence of the ac drive. AB  - Large adiabatic polarons in anisotropic crystals in the presence of constant magnetic field have been studied within the Holstein molecular crystal model in the continuum approximation. It was shown that magnetic field directed along the symmetry axis induces transverse confinement which may stabilize large polarons. They represent localized (soliton-like) nonlinear structure uniformly propagating along the symmetry axis and rotating around it in the same time. Such objects exist in 3D lattice provided that coupling constant and magnetic field do not exceed certain critical values. In contrast with pure 1D systems existence of large polarons is possible in a quite wider region of the values of coupling constant which may attain considerably higher values than in the pure 1D media. Furthermore, polaron effective mass, depending on the intensity of the applied magnetic field, may be considerably lighter than that of the the pure 1D polarons for the same values of coupling constant. This is the most significant difference with respect to pure 1D systems in the absence of magnetic field and may have substantial impact on polaron transport properties.

As temperature increases, in the amplitude dependence of the step width, deviation from the well-known Bessel-like oscillations has been observed, and three different types of behavior have been classified. AB  - Dynamical mode-locking phenomena in the incommensurate structures of the dc- and ac-driven overdamped Frenkel-Kontorova model are studied by molecular-dynamics simulations. The obtained results have shown that Shapiro steps exhibit significantly different amplitude and frequency dependence from the one observed in the commensurate structures. Due to the incommensurability of the system the special symmetry of the motion of particles is broken, and in the amplitude dependence of Shapiro steps, this will result in the appearance of anomalies and deviation from the well-known Bessel-like behavior. In the frequency or period dependence, oscillations have been observed in the high-amplitude limit; however, they exhibit strong anomalies compared with those in the commensurate structures. The oscillatory behavior and the anomalies have been also be revealed in the (F(ac), (F) over bar) and the (nu(0), (F) over bar) phase diagrams where several phases are defined.

AB  - Frequency dependence of the subharmonic Shapiro steps has been studied in the ac driven overdamped Frenkel-Kontorova model with deformable substrate potential. As potential gets deformed, in addition to the harmonic steps, subharmonic steps appear in the number and size that increase as the frequency of the external force increases. It was found that size of both harmonic and subharmonic steps strongly depend on the frequency where in the high-amplitude limit oscillatory dependence appears. When expressed as a function of period these oscillations of the step size with frequency have the same form as the oscillations of the step size with amplitude. Deformation of the potential has strong influence on these oscillations, and as in the case of amplitude dependence, with the increase of deformation, the same three distinctive types of behavior have been classified.

AB  - Locked-to-sliding phase transition has been studied in the driven two-dimensional Frenkel-Kontorova model with the square symmetric substrate potential. It is found that as the driving force increases, the system transfers from the locked state to the sliding state where the motion of particles is in the direction different from that of driving force. With the further increase in driving force, at some critical value, the particles start to move in the direction of driving force. These two critical forces, the static friction or depinning force, and the kinetic friction force for which particles move in the direction of driving force have been analyzed for different system parameters. Different scenarios of phase transitions have been examined and dynamical phases are classified. In the case of zero misfit angle, the analytical expressions for static and kinetic friction force have been obtained.
